Welcome to NOW !
It is a fabulous time to be in DC! Old man winter is on his way out, and we are all hoping Mother Nature will give us a drier spring than last. But if she doesn’t, NOW has got you covered with plenty of rainy-day activities. Check out our suggestions for some great independent coffee shops and cafes that you can step into while traipsing around the city; and if you’re looking for a fun family-friendly activity you should experience an escape room, as DC has some of the best in the nation. March 8th is also International Women’s Day, and you can learn all about its origin, and the significance behind it in this issue. As always, we highlight some of the best performances and exhibits you can find during these hopefully warmer months. Welcome to Springtime in Washington, we are so happy you’re here!

Located in the southern part of Arlington County, and adjacent to the Fairlington area, Shirlington gets its name by combining “Shirley” (from the Shirley Highway, 395) and “Arlington.” It was conceived in 1944 by auto dealer and banker Joseph Cherner and renovated to its current state in early 2000s. How to Get Around Town
Washington, D.C.'s Metro system is one of the safest, cleanest, and most convenient transportation systems in the world. But the Metro isn't your only option! Check out these alternative methods that will get you to where you need to go in no time. DC Circulator Providing public transportation to DC's biggest attractions and several neighborhoods, the Circulator is only $1 to ride. There are six routes across 136 stops going all over the District and into Rosslyn, VA. Buses arrive every ten minutes at each stop. Download RideDC app on iPhone or Android to get the most up-to-the-minute schedule.
The going rate for Mobike, Limebike, and Spin is around $1 for a 30-minute ride with characteristics of each differing only slightly. Jump DC, while not totally dockless as they do need to be locked to a bike rack, is the only option to offer an electric motor in the front wheel and a battery concealed in the frame making rides a breeze. Jump DC runs around $2 for a 20-minute ride.
Uber and Lyft These are the two most popular ride-share companies due to their dependability and relatively short wait times. Simply download these apps to your phone and sign up with a credit or debit card and begin requesting rides at the tap of a button. Uber Pool and Lyft Line are options that allow you to share a ride with another rider also headed near your destination. The Pool/Line options will provide the cheapest ride but may prolong your ride a bit. First time user? Use Promo Codes HITTHEROAD (UBER) and NEWUSER10 (LYFT).
Capital Bike Share (CBS) With over 350 stations and 3,000 bicycles across DC, Virginia, and Maryland, CBS is an easy way to get you to your destination, while allowing you to enjoy breathtaking views of the city. Download the app and sign up with a credit card and from there you can choose from either a Day Key, or commit to a year-long membership, giving you the opportunity for unlimited rides and duration, all year long.
Dockless Bikes You surely will notice brightly-colored bikes strewn around the city, seemingly ready for someone to run off on, but dockless bikes have built-in locks that are unlocked by a user pointing their phone at a bike’s QR code. The downloadable apps help you locate the bike and allows for payment.

Electric Scooters Following on the heels of dockless bikes comes the next big ‘it’ thing in DC transportation–electric scooters. Very similar to how the dockless bike services operate, users download an app and register a credit card and phone number to locate scooters. Rates run around $1 to start and .15 cents a minute thereafter. Companies currently include Lime, Spin, Bird, and Skip.

Escape Room
CAN YOU ESCAPE? Escape rooms may have once seemed like they were just another DC craze (we’re looking at you, cupcakes and frosÊ), but years later escape rooms are still seeing the same eagerness and excitement from customers as they did when they first opened. An escape room is a real-life teambased puzzle game, where you are locked in a room and must solve puzzles together to get out. Teams can range in number with as little as two or as many as 10+. The term Escape Room can take on new meaning as some places will have you discovering two to three new secret rooms during your playing time, which can be anywhere from 45-60 minutes. Escape rooms are all themed, and a gamemaster typically begins by delivering a background story explaining your mission and why you must try to get out. Rooms contain a series of puzzles ranging from ciphers, matching patterns, using random objects and figuring out how they connect with other aspects of the room, as well as 38
nowguides.com
other clues that force you to think outside the box and spark your creative senses. While plenty of rooms are designed so that one can get out without any help, escape rooms always offer help from the gamemaster (who is watching teams the whole time from a camera in another room) who can provide extra clues to steer people in the right direction if it seems they are having trouble moving along. Escape rooms are great for an afternoon with friends, birthdays, company team-building, and much more. As the cooler temps stay looming around the District, an escape room makes for a great indoor activity.

Meet Ginger Flesher Sonnier Owner, Escape Room Live DC / Alexandria While staying in Prague with her husband, it took a chance outing to an escape room (something she kept seeing all over Trip Advisor) to get her hooked. After touring several other escape rooms in Europe, Ginger realized what an opportunity there was to bring something like this home and do it so much better. While most of the escape rooms she visited overseas were dingy, cheap-looking and gross, her plan was to make over-the-top, visually appealing rooms that packed a major wow-factor. Ginger opened the doors to her first location in Glover Park in 2014 with an espionage themed room, and from there has opened locations in Georgetown and Old Town, Alexandria. In only five years Ginger’s company produces some of the highest-grossing escape rooms in the county. 2019 will be another banner year for Ginger as she plans to open Throw Social in Ivy City, where backyard-style games meet libations and fun! Games will include shuffleboard, “footbowl” where footballs are thrown at bowling pins, Axe throwing—another recent DC trend—Curling, and more!

Women's History
In honor of Women's History Month in March, NOW spotlights a well-kept secret in American history...
WONDER WOMEN: THE SUFFARAGISTS MOVEMENT & THE RIGHT TO VOTE FOR AMERICAN WOMEN
5 MILLION WOMEN
|
70 YEARS
|
1 CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT
The Road to Victory The formal origination of the suffrage movement began in 1848 in Seneca Falls, NY, at the first women’s rights convention that resulted in the Declaration of Sentiments, a document that sought voting rights for women. Activists such as Susan B. Anthony raised public awareness and lobbied the state and federal governments to grant voting rights to women. Three generations of women persisted until they emerged victorious with the passage of the 19th Amendment on August 26, 1920.*
Women march with banner "National Woman Suffrage" at the Woman Suffrage Parade in Washington, D.C., March 3, 1913. In background: northeast corner of Pennsylvania Ave. and 11th St.
On the road to securing the right to vote, thousands of women engaged in peaceful protests throughout the country to bring attention to the movement, scores of whom were illegally arrested, beaten, and worse. Over 25 million women won the right to vote and not a single shot was fired. And one of the greatest expansions of democracy in a single day that the world had ever seen. America’s original Wonder Women indeed! *Note that, while African American women fought for and gained the right to vote in 1920, the right was denied to them during Jim Crow laws, poll taxes, and other anti-voting rights schemes prevailed. That changed when the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed. Native American and Asian women also did not immediately gain voting rights. 40

Honoring the suffragists In August 2020, the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial will open to honor these virtually unknown women. Located outside of Washington, D.C. in Occoqoquan Regional Park on former DC prison grounds, the monument stands where scores of suffragists aged 19 to 73 were illegally imprisoned, humiliated, inhumane conditions, tortured for picketing the White House in 1917. When word leaked out about this unconscionable treatment, it became a turning point for President Wilson to address Congress and seek a Constitutional Amendment. Finally, a proper place in American history. Feeling inspired? Donation and educational information is available at www.suffragistmemorial.org.

MAY I RECOMMEND... ...talking to your concierge! The biggest challenge a concierge faces is getting guests to visit the concierge desk. There are many factors that might make a guest hesitant to approach the desk. Perhaps they had a bad experience with a snooty concierge. Perhaps they visited a “concierge desk” that was not actually staffed with professional concierge, but was instead staffed by third-party sales people pushing timeshare tours or tour bus tickets. I have even had guests apologize when they have come to the desk because they thought their question or request was too small for a concierge! No request is ever too small nor is any question too “out there.” The concierge is there to help! Every guest should know that when they come to the concierge they will be treated warmly and that we will do our best to ensure the best experience possible.
MAY I RECOMMEND... ...journeying beyond the National Mall While the National Mall naturally gets most of the attention, there are many exciting experiences available to those willing to venture a little further. For those who love the finer things in life, I would recommend a visit to the fantastic Hillwood Estate and Gardens. Experience the "lifestyles of the rich and famous" as you explore an incredible collection of Fabergé, paintings, jewelry, furniture, and fashion. Another one of my favorite off-the-beaten-track places is Kennilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens. This National Park is located in Northeast Washington, D.C. along the banks of the Anacostia River and features short trails exploring the wetlands of Washington, D.C. along with over 30 acres of aquatic gardens featuring lotus and exotic water lilies. It is an exceptionally tranquil space tucked away amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. 42

MAY I RECOMMEND... ...experiencing new cuisine Many visitors to Washington, D.C. may not know that we are home to one of the largest Ethiopian populations in the world. For those interested in experiencing Ethiopian cuisine, I recommend a visit to Das Ethiopian Cuisine in Georgetown. This wonderful restaurant presents incredible Ethiopian dishes in a charming white-tablecloth space. The knowledgeable staff can capably guide those new to the cuisine through the menu ensuring a great introduction to this D.C. specialty.
MAY I RECOMMEND... ...a unique tasting experience
A tent under which all come to feast is the very Amharic definition of DAS, and that is what you will
enjoy here. Enjoy the casual but refined atmosphere that serves up the freshest Ethiopian dishes The largest collection of Louis XIII cognac in North America may from local and sustainable food sources. Open daily 11am 11pm be found in the Experience Salon at Trump International Hotel Washington, D.C. This unique tasting experience is a private affair available by appointment only. Guests are guided by spirit experts who can custom tailor an experience to your interests. If cognac is not your drink of choice, opt instead for a tasting rare scotch, Japanese whisky, or Pappy Van Winkle bourbon.
MAY I RECOMMEND... ...fun for kids of all ages There are many wonderful, family-friendly activities here in Washington. Once of my favorites close to the hotel is the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. The museum features many hands-on exhibits including a terrific exhibit where you can walk with live butterflies. There are also extensive exhibits on science and the natural world. Another highlight is the world-famous Hope Diamond and the national gemstone collection. The extensive collection of exquisite gems will dazzle all ages.
About the Les Clefs d'Or and the Washington Area Consierge Association Many professional hotel concierges are members of an elite concierge organization called Les Clefs d'Or. Members of Les Clefs d'Or are easily recognizable by the set of golden crossed keys they wear on their lapel. This international organization imposes strict ethical and professional standards on its members, ensuring the highest level of service. Here in the Washington, D.C. area we have our own local association, the Washington Area Concierge Association (WACA). I am very proud to currently serve as the President where I work with out Executive Committee to strengthen the concierge community, promote tourism, and give back to the community through our charitable efforts. Members of this association wear a golden lapel pin with an image of the Capitol with the acronym WACA below. WACA members are also bound by ethical guidelines that ensure they are working in the guests' best interest.
