Skating Rinks are a great way to stay warm while outside in the colder months, and is also a great family activity. These skating rinks are typically open November-March and most have reasonable admission prices.

With creative cocktails and hot libations, over the top décor and seasonal music to match, this watering hole can really help you get into the holiday spirit.

Sculpture Garden Ice Rink 7th St and Constitution Skate while surrounded by extraordinary sculptures in a parklike setting on the mall.

The Pub and The People 1648 North Capitol St NW While not a pop-up bar exactly, this cozy, neighborhood Pub will be erecting a heated holiday tent for the winter season. If this tent is anything like last year's, it will be bursting at the seams with non-denominational holiday cheer. Twinkling lights, seasonal melodies, and cuddling blankets abound. Even deists and secular humanists can't help but see eye-to-eye over a mug of their delicious spiced hot bourbon cider.

Washington Harbour Ice Rink 3000 K Street NW With scenic views of the Potomac, the Georgetown Waterfront has several bars and restaurants surrounding the rink as well. Pentagon Row Ice Rink 1201 South Joyce St. Located in Arlington, this rink is in the middle of a large shopping center and right next to the huge Pentagon City Mall. 6

Tour Guide Q&A

Not everyone that lives in DC works for the government! Meet Shelby Thompson, better known as Tom, a tour guide with Big Bus Tours here in the District for over five years now. At 78 years young Tom grew up in the DC area but has roots all the way in Wyoming. Talk about l-i-v-i-n-g! After graduating from Yale and California University Law, he held a myriad of jobs ranging from being a steward for Riddle Airlines, working in Yellowstone National Park, acting as a Management Analyst for USAid during the Vietnam War, running his own bookstore, he was even a Mall Santa Claus! These days you can find him giving tours on Big Bus’s open-top busses to eager tourists in the city. Check out our Q&A with Tom and see what the person who has more positive reviews on Trip Advisor than any other DC Big Bus guide has to say about his latest line of work and some fun DC facts!

What memorial do most visitors seem to get the most excited about?

What's a common question you get from a guest on Big Bus Tours?

The Lincoln Memorial, and the White House.

The most common question we get about the Washington Monument is why it changes colors from the ground up. When the monument was under construction in 1854, the Washington National Monument Society, a private group seeking donations to construct the monument, ran out of money and the project ground to a halt. Twenty-five years later, the U.S. Government took over and completed the upper two-thirds of the structure by 1884 using marble from a different quarry. The two sections closely resembled each other at first, but time, wind, rain, and erosion have caused the marble sections to weather differently, thereby producing the difference in color. A third type of marble is also visible at the dividing line between the two main phases of construction.

What month do you find brings the most visitors? The least? May & June vs. Jan. & Feb. What do you love most about being a Big Bus guide? Introducing visitors from around the world to the capital and interacting with them in a fun way. What is your personal favorite spot to visit in DC and Why? The garden court and the galleries of the National Gallery of Art, and the lectures. Any memorable experiences while working on the Bus? Many! From prompting the mayor of DC when she gave a tour on top of the Big Bus, to the lovely play with youngsters who then simply say “Thank you!”

DID YOU KNOW? Big Bus Tours D.C. started to bring in all-electric, zero-emission vehicles to the District last year, and is now up to 10% of its local fleet. These battery-powered buses are designed to save on costs and can travel nearly 100 miles before needing to be recharged! nowguides.com

Best BBQ

What’s in a sauce? While the cooking technique and various cuts of meat typically classify the various regional barbecue styles, it’s the sauce that really defines them. Let NOW give you a breakdown so you can sound like a pro at your next barbecue.

Vinegar Sauce Origin: North Carolina Taste: This tomato-less sauce relies on a combination of vinegar and added spices like cayenne, black and red pepper, hot sauce and water.

Sweet Sauce Origin- Kansas City Taste- Thick, sweet and tangy. Ketchup and molasses give it a heaver consistency while adding liquid smoke can give it that barbecue flavor sans coals, fire or a smoker.

White Sauce Origin- Alabama Taste- This tangy sauce is a thick and creamy mixture of mayonnaise, vinegar and pepper, best for dipping or poured over smoked chicken or pork.

Mustard Sauce Origin- South Carolina Taste- Tangy. The thinnest of the bunch, mustard is mixed with vinegar and added spices for a zang. Great for pulled pork. 34

HAN OAK PORTLAND, OREGON Janice – NOW Publisher “A born and raised Oregonian, I have always enjoyed my many trips back to my hometown of Eugene and its surrounding areas, and a dinner at the amazing Han Oak in Portland was no exception. My friend Duke and I parked in what looked like a neighborhood, walking up to small, single story buildings-none looked like restaurants! But, how surprised was I when we entered through a small, white door, to a garden-like atmosphere, with a grassy courtyard, picnic tables, and a large industrial garage door that opened up to a u-shaped bar and dining tables. What a hidden gem! Even though there was a two-hour wait for tables, the hostess was nice enough to squeeze us in at a small coffee table off the dining room, in a room with children’s toys!

40

nowguides.com

We took the waitresses suggestions: chive & pork dumplings, Korean fried chicken, chargrilled mackerel and kimchi dumplings. I love Korean cuisine, and this was the best I’ve eaten over the years! The service was great, and the staff could not have been nicer; they thought it was fun that we agreed to dine in the “living room” and I really enjoyed all the surroundings. The funny thing is…the Cho family (owners and chefs) live on premise with their young children, so the toys I saw in the “living room” space where we ate, are used, and not décor! The honor of being awarded Portland’s Best Restaurant of the Year in 2017 was well deserved. I loved it and highly recommend a visit your next time in Portland, Oregon!"

KITCHEN TAKUAN TOKYO, JAPAN

Matt – NOW Designer “Nestled in the trendy Tokyo neighborhood of Shimokitazawa among vintage clothing shops and hip cafes, Kitchen Takuan serves up great food and charming company. Upon receiving a Japanese-only menu (thanks, Google translate!), I threw caution to wind and ordered unique dishes, like grilled leek with olive oil drizzled on top. Simple but so very おいしい (delicious)!

As often is the case in Japan, curious locals got to talking with me. An older woman asked about our travels, and shared stories of her and her American husband traveling throughout the world. After our meal, she excitedly made her way over to my table, phone in hand. 'Excuse me...this is my cat,' she shared. I still have her phone number. I should text her sometime. A meal and connection I'll never forget."

How to Get Around Town

Washington, D.C.'s Metro system is one of the safest, cleanest, and most convenient transportation systems in the world. But the Metro isn't your only option! Check out these alternative methods that will get you to where you need to go in no time. DC Circulator Providing public transportation to DC's biggest attractions and several neighborhoods, the Circulator is only $1 to ride. Uber and Lyft These are the two most popular ride-share companies due to their dependability and relatively short wait times. Simply download these apps to your phone and sign up with a credit or debit card and begin requesting rides at the tap of a button. Uber Pool and Lyft Line are options that allow you to share a ride with another rider also headed near your destination. The Pool/Line options will provide the cheapest ride but may prolong your ride a bit. First time user? Use Promo Codes HITTHEROAD (UBER) and NEWUSER10 (LYFT).

Capital Bike Share (CBS) With over 350 stations and 3,000 bicycles across DC, Virginia, and Maryland, CBS is an easy way to get you to your destination, while allowing you to enjoy breathtaking views of the city. Download the app and sign up with a credit card and from there you can choose from either a Day Key, or commit to a year-long membership, giving you the opportunity for unlimited rides and duration, all year long.

Dockless Bikes - new to DC! You surely will notice brightly-colored bikes strewn around the city, seemingly ready for someone to run off on, but dockless bikes have built-in locks that are unlocked by a user pointing their phone at a bike’s QR code. The downloadable apps help you locate the bike and allows for payment.

42

nowguides.com

Electric Scooters - new to DC! Following on the heels of dockless bikes comes the next big ‘it’ thing in DC transportation–electric scooters. Very similar to how the dockless bike services operate, users download an app and register a credit card and phone number to locate scooters. Rates run around $1 to start and .15 cents a minute thereafter. Companies currently include Lime, Spin, Bird, and Skip.
