With more than 70 paintings and works on paper, this exhibition demonstrates how the Neo-Impressionists – painters such as Georges Seurat, Paul Signac and Theo van Rysselberghe – used stylization and color to create landscapes and figures that went well beyond observed nature. Their approach in 1890 was hailed as an alternative to Impressionism and a fresh opportunity to focus on light and contemporary life. September 27 – January 11, 2015

Style in Chinese Landscape Painting: The Yuan Legacy
Landscape painting is one of the most outstanding achievements of Chinese culture. Key styles in this genre emerged during the Yuan dynasty (1279–1368) and are still followed today. This exhibition presents six important styles of this art that were borne out of a rebellious region of China by a class of scholar-painters who created art not for rulers or leaders, but for themselves and each other. The Freer Gallery possesses one of the most important collections of Chinese painting outside Asia, with many of its works from the Song and Yuan dynasties holding near-iconic status. all for Virginia this autumn with an overnight trip to the gorgeous Shenandoah Valley. Leaf peeping is at its most colorful in Shenandoah National Park, which covers the crest of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains for over 75 miles. The Park boasts views from peaks and overlooks that include not only the Blue Ridge itself but also the patchwork of woods, farmlands and orchards on either side. The historic 105-mile Skyline Drive, a National Scenic Byway and one of the most popular drives in the country, meanders through the 200,000 acres of protected lands in the Park that are havens for wildlife, cascading waterfalls and spectacular vistas of quaint communities that lie in the foothills. Wildlife 22

includes black bear, deer, wild turkey, and other woodland critters. With as many as 200 species of local and migratory birds, viewing opportunities from Skyline Drive are excellent. The Front Royal entrance at Routes 66 & 340 is the closest access point to Washington, DC. There you will find the Dickey Ridge Visitor Center that can help orient you to the fall foliage and more than 500 miles of hiking trails, including 100 miles of the formidable Appalachian Trail. When the 35 miles-perhour speed limit and hairpin turns get to be too much, you can jump off of the drive to take in a winery or delectable restaurant just down the mountain.
The Commonwealth of Virginia has a Skyline Wine, Dine & Recline Trail map that features the location of hikes, waterfalls, scenic overlooks, picnic areas, dining, and lodging in the Park as well as the approximate location of vineyards and restaurants in the foothills below. Little Washington Winery with its Wine Immersion Bootcamps is especially popular in the fall. Stay the night in the Park at the Skyland Resort or Big Meadows Lodge. Both offer lovely views in rooms that range from rustic cabins to cozy suites. For the more intrepid outdoorsmen and women, there are several campgrounds accessible from Skyline Drive. Information about Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive, and more sights to see can be found at Virginia.org, the best resource for planning a trip to Virginia.

La Boheme
PERFORMING ARTS Driving Miss Daisy
La boheme
Ford’s Theatre, September 26 – October 26 In this beloved classic Daisy Werthan causes a car wreck and her son hires hard-working chauffeur Hoke Colburn to look after her. What begins as a hostile clashing of wills between a stubborn Jewish matriarch and a proud black man evolves into a decades-long friendship as the two navigate Civil Rightsera Atlanta. With humor and heartfelt emotion, Alfred Uhry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play explores the transformative power of true friendship.
The Kennedy Center, November 1 – 15 Deep in the heart of Paris’s Latin Quarter, Mimì, a lovely seamstress of delicate health, meets handsome poet Rodolfo. Eccentric singer Musetta flirts and feuds with painter Marcello. And Colline, a philosopher, and Schaunard, a musician, do their best to distract the landlord from the rent. Through jealous breakups and rekindled romances, rowdy celebrations and tender tears, these six friends fight to keep their passions burning bright, hoping spring cures a tragic illness looming in their midst.
Little Dancer The Kennedy Center, October 25 – November 30 Part fact, part fiction, and set in the harsh backstage world of the Paris Opera Ballet, this world premiere Kennedy Center musical is inspired by the story of Marie van Goethem, a young ballerina who posed for Edgar Degas and became, inadvertently, the most famous dancer in the world. Torn by her family’s poverty, her debt to the artist, and the lure of wealthy men, she’s girl on the verge of womanhood, caught between the conflicting demands of life and art. 30
