Ok, so maybe Darth Vader said it better to Luke, but George IS the Father of Our Country. You’ve traveled to the city that was named after the great man, now really get to know him while getting in touch with your inner patriot. Take a trip to Mount Vernon to celebrate Washington’s Birthday (now known as “Presidents Day”) and participate in the biggest party to our most important Founding Father.
On your way, make a stop in Old Town Alexandria, an 18th-century Virginia seaport filled with historic charm, quaint shops, and fine dining. On February 15, join your countrymen there in lining the streets for the biggest George Washington Birthday parade in the country. Get up close and personal with Washington and his 43 successors at Madame Tussauds’ Presidents Gallery, the only place in the world where all U.S. presidents can be seen in 3D. Accompanying these wax gentlemen are some of the most popular First Ladies.
Pops of pink abound in the District when the annual National Cherry Blossom Festival takes place, March 20 – April 17. Self-guided and guided tours of the nation’s most famous group of flowering trees are offered throughout the spring. Special events include the Opening Ceremony (March 26) and the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade (April 16), in addition to more than 150 cultural and musical performances and sports competitions. 6

Happening NOW
One of Washington’s newest residents was born in the fall and just made his public debut in January. Bei Bei is a baby panda cub who joins his parents and older sister as the most popular family at the National Zoo. Plan a visit on a warmer day, and consider going in April when the Kids’ Farm is celebrated daily with special activities and events.
More than 5,000 exotic animals from all over the world can be seen in Washington at the National Geographic Museum’s “Photo Ark” exhibit. Photographer Joel Sartore used studio lighting and plain black and white backgrounds in his stunning portraits with the goal of inspiring the world to save some of the planet’s most endangered species.
Butterflies are a harbinger of spring, but you don’t have to wait for the warm weather to bring them to the city. The Natural History Museum features a butterfly pavilion where visitors have a rare opportunity to walk among butterflies and exotic plants. The attraction reopened on February 1 after winter maintenance.
The National Cathedral features flowers for sale, floral displays, and garden tours at its annual National Cathedral Flower Mart. Musical performances, children’s entertainment – an antique carousel is a fan favorite – and the chance to climb the 333 steps to the Central Tower of the Cathedral are other highlights of this popular springtime event, held May 6-7.

NOW’s Favorite
Last Call for Ice As Old Man Winter gasps his last breath, take advantage of the District’s most artistic outdoor ice rink at the National Gallery of Art’s Sculpture Garden. Glide amongst large-scale sculptures by contemporary artists, through March 13.
Hooping it Up Head to the Verizon Center and check out our Washington Wizards, the local NBA team. If collegiate competition is more your speed, consider taking in a game at one of the “Georges”: Georgetown, George Washington, or George Mason University.
Waterfalls in DC Well not technically in the city itself, but just across the river in Great Falls, Virginia, are breathtaking views of the Potomac. Hike one of the trails, graded by skill level, and see one of the natural wonders of the region, a site particularly dramatic in late winter and early spring.
Cruising on the River Hop on a water taxi – indoor seating is recommended on chilly days – and motor across the river between Old Town Alexandria, Virginia and National Harbor, Maryland. Both locations have distinct attractions and restaurants that appeal to all ages.

Tidal Basin Pedal Power Prefer to power your own “water taxi”? Rent a paddle boat on the Tidal Basin with your most fit friend and pedal around the Jefferson Memorial. Sail through in March and April, and you’ll be rewarded with views of the iconic cherry blossoms.
A Monumental Scene The Mall and surrounding areas give way to great views in late winter and early spring. And the best vantage point is arguably the Washington Monument. Catch a leafless panorama or wait for the blossoms to burst to see the city bathed in pink!
Meet George Washington February 22 is George Washington’s birthday, a date that is taken seriously in these parts. Venture down to his home, Mount Vernon, to meet an actor whose authentic portrayal of Washington will make you feel like you’re in the company of the Father of Our Country.
Night Tour The days are slowly becoming longer, but while the sun is still in pre-summer, early-setting mode, hop on a bus for an evening photo tour of the monuments. Try the double decker buses for a three-hour jaunt around town.

CAPITOL CITY BREWING CO.
DUBLINER
Capitol City Brewing Co. opened its doors in 1992 as D.C’s first brew pub since prohibition. The brew-houses located in each restaurant enable brewers to bring you the freshest beer within hours of its completion. Capitol City’s chefs have developed an excellent menu with regional ingredients, developed specifically to pair with the original brews. Tours of the brewery are also available upon request.
Serving Capitol Hill for over 40 years, the authentic Dublin City Pub is America’s only purveyor of Auld Dubliner Amber Ale and Dubliner Irish Lager. Their famous libations are accompanied by hearty Irish fare, from their famous Fish n’ Chips to their Irish Beef Stew. Irish performers take the stage seven nights a week, making it the premier location for midweek entertainment.

As winter gives way to spring, our palates all seem to turn to the refreshing taste of a good brew. Options abound, from the traditional stout of Ireland to the local flavors made in DC’s backyard. The NOW team has compiled a list of our favorite pubs that serve our favorite brews. Cheers!

BIERGARTEN HAUS
THE PUB AND THE PEOPLE
It’s Oktoberfest year-round at Biergarten Haus! Inside you’ll find a 400+ capacity Biergarten with outdoor bars, and an additional roof-deck overseeing the garden. The authentic German bar pours only German imports, and offers a hearty selection of traditional dishes. Biergarten Hause is also home of D.C.’s #1 rated Trivia Night every Tuesday at 8pm. Das fun!
The cozy brick-and-steel interior lends this gastropub its rustic atmosphere, which is complimented by a tap loaded with local beers, stellar house-made cocktails, and over 150 spirits, including several in-house aged whiskeys and ryes. With a menu loaded with chef-created delicacies and a brunch worth getting out of bed for, the Pub has quickly earned a position as a favorite local hangout.

Located near the Verizon Center, the ChopHouse serves steakhouse classics, paired with handcrafted Ales brewed on site. The warm atmosphere, complete with pool tables, cozy lounges and white tablecloths will become your new favorite happy hour spot, with most beers (even craft and seasonal brews) under $4, wine and well drinks under $5, and seasonal cocktails under $6.
“Sauf” isn’t a German word you’d use to describe your weekend to your boss. The verb “saufen” means to drink, but in a way that implies you’re not just having a quiet drink with a friend. Sauf Haus, then, is a place to get sloshed. The roomy rooftop beer garden is lined with long, Oktoberfest-style benches, and a huge bar topped with 16 taps. Every draft, sold in half-liter or one-liter mugs, comes from Germany.
FADO
BLUE JACKET
With different themed rooms, Fado is basically four Irish pubs in one. The menu varies from classics like corned beef and cabbage to the international curry and chips or farmhouse brie. And, of course, all the Irish stouts, whiskies and lagers you care to sample. Fado is also the European sports headquarters, with a large flat screen TV making it easy to catch the latest soccer or rugby matches.
Located in the renovated historic Boilermaker Shops, Bluejacket is a three-story microbrewery, complete with a 200-seat restaurant & bar tucked underneath impressive chrome brewing equipment. The menu extends the classic fare of beer halls and public houses by featuring the best locally sourced products available and highlighting reinterpretations of hearty classics such as steamed mussels and artisanal sausages.

Bad Saint
(800 O St, N)
(3326 11th St, NW)
D.C. chef Cedric Maupillier (of acclaimed Mintwood Place) brings French flair to his American café that features “mid-size” plates. Two and a half plates are recommended, which give you multiple tastings of such popular fare as Fried Chicken “coq au vin”, pickled rockfish, and leeks dijonnaise. Open in the Shaw neighborhood since late fall of 2015, Convivial is steadily gaining a reputation as one of the top restaurants in the District.
Don’t let its bare bones website, small tables, and no reservations policy deter you from visiting Bad Saint, a hot new restaurant serving up Filipino fare. Washingtonians are raving about the shrimp fritters and the Ginisang Tulya (clams with Chinese sausage and Sichuan pepper) as well as the impeccable service at this Columbia Heights restaurant, the first in the city that is dedicated solely to Filipino food.
Chaia
Succotash
(3207 Grace St, NW)
“Seasonal plant-based tacos and sides” is how friends Suzannne Simon and Bettina Stern describe their new restaurant. After overwhelming popularity at farmers markets in the city, the vegetarian Chaia opened in Georgetown over the winter. Mushroom tacos with feta and the kale and potato taco featuring pickled onions and poblano crema are early standouts. Stop by for brunch on the weekends and ask for an egg – fried or scrambled – to be added to your handcrafted corn tortilla. 38

National Harbor, with its resort hotels and restaurants, is worth a trip, particularly for a meal at Succotash. Chef Edward Lee has created a traditional Southern restaurant with some Korean influences, which produces some unusual flavor combinations (collards and kim-chi, anyone?). The Dirty Fried Chicken with Korean spices is well regarded and is part of the popular Taste of the South family-style offering for parties of six or more.
