Happening NOW The Washington area can experience some cold temperatures during the fall and winter months, but lucky for us there are plenty of events, activities, festivals, sights to see, and food to eat to keep us going all season long!

A big element of the holiday season is, of course, shopping for items to give to our loved ones as gifts. DC makes shopping easy with a plethora of options. Chinatown’s Downtown Holiday Market is open daily from noon-8pm and features more than 150 regional vendors. Exhibitors do rotate and the selection of offerings will vary day-to-day, so make it a frequent stop during your holiday shopping outings. By visiting Mansion at Strathmore to shop for unique and meaningful presents, you can be sure that every purchase is part of a larger purpose. The wonderful finds at their Museum Shop Holiday Market make unique gifts, and they also support 18 museum and cultural organizations in our community. The Junior League of Washington will host the 59th annual Holiday Shops, November 17-19 at Dock5 at Union Market. Holiday Shops is more than a unique shopping experience; it is also one of the league’s major fundraisers as funds raised go towards annual grants for local nonprofits and improving the DC community.

In 2016, DC received the honor of Restaurant City of the Year from Bon Appetit magazine, and since then has only expanded its restaurant scene with new and welcoming places opening every week. Lupo Verde has added its third restaurant, Lupo Marino, in the much-anticipated renovation of the District Wharf. Sexy and exclusive Nobu also opened its doors in the West End this summer. For the sweet tooth in the family, make sure to check out Presidential Scoops for some ice cream after you visit White House Gifts for souvenirs to take home.

A much-anticipated joint reopening is happening this fall when The Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery opens its doors again after a period of renovation and reinstallation on October 14th at 5pm. The Freer and the Sackler are two Smithsonian museums connected by the exhibition, study, and love of Asian art. Newest exhibitions will include Resound: Bells of Ancient China, Encountering the Buddha: Art and Practice across Asia, Divine Felines: Cats of Ancient Egypt and Subodh Gupta: “Terminal. Holiday season is also a time to take in the magnificent holiday light displays throughout the Christmas season. ZooLights, one of the most popular and city centric ones, takes place at the National Zoo in Woodley Park. Admission is free for this huge display of holiday lights. See recreational boats light up the sky over the Potomac during the parade of lighted boats, happening in Washington Harbour and Old Town Alexandria. The Bull Run Festival of Lights happens through January 7th and features penguins, snowmen, deer, candy canes and Santa.

Happening over the first weekend of December, Heurich House Museum Christkindlmarkt is another market where you can shop locally made goods from over 40 vendors at the outdoor holiday market and tour the seasonally decorated home of German brewer Christian Heurich. This is Dupont Circle's only holiday market and includes gift items such as jewelry, ceramics, chocolate, housewares, clothing and more. nowguides.com

FAVORITE FALL THINGS

Skating Rinks are a great way to stay warm while outside in the colder months, and is also a great family activity. These skating rinks are typically open November-March and most have reasonable admission prices. DC Winter Fun

‘Pop-up bars' have been all the rage this past year and here are two that up the ante once the fall weather sets in. With creative cocktails and hot libations, over the top décor and seasonal music to match, these watering holes can really help you get into the holiday spirit. Miracle on 7th Street 1843 7th St NW Kicking off for the third year this November, this Christmas themed atmosphere takes over three different bars, each one decked out with a plethora of decorations including dreidel chandeliers, a dinosaur Nativity scene, and a tribute to the fan favorite “Stranger Things.” Get here early, lines have been known to creep around the block.

The Pub and The People 1648 North Capitol St NW While not a pop-up bar exactly, this cozy, neighborhood Pub will be erecting a heated holiday tent for the winter season. If this tent is anything like last year's, it will be bursting at the seams with non-denominational holiday cheer. Twinkling lights, seasonal melodies, and cuddling blankets abound. Even deists and secular humanists can't help but see eye-to-eye over a mug of their delicious spiced hot bourbon cider.

Fall for Virginia this autumn with an overnight trip to the gorgeous Shenandoah Valley. Leaf peeping is at its most colorful in Shenandoah National Park, which covers the crest of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains for over 75 miles. The Park boasts views from peaks and overlooks that include not only the Blue Ridge itself but also the patchwork of woods, farmlands and orchards on either side. The historic 105-mile Skyline Drive, a National Scenic Byway and one of the most popular drives in the country, meanders through the 200,000 acres of protected lands in the Park that are havens for wildlife, cascading waterfalls and spectacular vistas of quaint communities that lie in the foothills. Wildlife includes black bear, deer, wild turkey, and other woodland critters. With as many as 200 species of local and migratory birds, viewing opportunities from Skyline Drive are excellent. The Front Royal entrance at Routes 66 & 340 is the closest access point to Washington, DC. There you will find the Dickey Ridge Visitor Center that can help orient you to the fall foliage and more than 500 miles of hiking trails, including 100 miles of the formidable Appalachian Trail.

When the 35 miles-per-hour speed limit and hairpin turns get to be too much, you can jump off of the drive to take in a winery or delectable restaurant just down the mountain. The Commonwealth of Virginia has a Skyline Wine, Dine & Recline Trail map that features the location of hikes, waterfalls, scenic overlooks, picnic areas, dining, and lodging in the Park as well as the approximate location of vineyards and restaurants in the foothills below. Little Washington Winery with its Wine Immersion Bootcamps is especially popular in the fall. Stay the night in the Park at the Skyland Resort or Big Meadows Lodge. Both offer lovely views in rooms that range from rustic cabins to cozy suites. For the more intrepid outdoorsmen and women, there are several campgrounds accessible from Skyline Drive.

Information about Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive, and more sights to see can be found at Virginia.org, the best resource for planning a trip to Virginia.

How to Get Around Town Washington, D.C.'s Metro system is one of the safest, cleanest, and most convenient transportation systems in the world. However, rail construction, limited hours, and track outages sometimes leave you out of luck. Great news - the Metro isn't your only option! Check out these alternative methods that will get you to where you need to go in no time. DC Circulator Providing public transportation to DC's biggest attractions and several neighborhoods, the Circulator is only $1 to ride. There are six routes across 136 stops going all over the District and into Rosslyn, VA. Buses arrive every ten minutes at each stop. Download RideDC app on iPhone or Android to get the most up-to-the-minute schedule. Uber Quickly becoming one of the most popular ride share services due its dependability and relatively short wait times. Simply download the Uber app on your smart phone, sign up with a credit or debit card, and begin requesting rides at the tap of a button. Drivers do not accept cash or credit cards, and tip is handled in the ride fare. What's Uber Pool? This service allows you to share a ride with another rider also headed in the vicinity of your destination. This will provide you with the cheapest fare possible, but may prolong your ride by just a bit. Lyft Easily Uber's biggest competition, Lyft has made leaps and bounds in notoriety in the district. Using the same model as Uber, there are very minor discrepancies between the two. Lyft Line, similar to Uber's Pool option, gives riders a cheaper option by sharing a ride with other passengers. Drivers keep !00% of tips left by riders. 42

nowguides.com

Capital Bike Share (CBS) With over 350 stations and 3,000 bicycles across DC, Virginia, and Maryland, CBS is an easy way to get you to your destination, while allowing you to enjoy breathtaking views of the city. Download the app and sign up with a credit card and from there you can choose from either a Day Key, or commit to a year-long membership, giving you the opportunity for unlimited rides and duration, all year long. Via Founded on the same principles as Uber and Lyft, Via differs in that it uses their smartphone app and proprietary algorithms to determine if a group of riders in in the same area are requesting a ride in the same direction. A luxury van or Sprinter Van should arrive within five minutes after a ride is requested. Via is more environmentally friendly, charges only a $5 or $7 flat fee, and also gives you the chance to meet people.
