Happening NOW
No doubt about it, Washington is full of hot air! Capitol Hill notwithstanding, you can beat the heat by hitting the water. Take a water taxi on the Potomac and check out quaint Old Town Alexandria, Virginia and National Harbor, Maryland. Taxis depart from multiple locations in the District regularly and make this mode of transportation a cool way to see the sights.
Visit the National Building Museum to see huge chunks of “ice”. The summer exhibition ICEBERGS features construction materials fashioned into glaciers, including one over 50 feet tall that visitors can ascend. Or stay “underwater” and explore caves and grottos while enjoying shaved ice treats. Washington’s baseball team, the Nationals, is hot, but everything is cool at the waterfront stadium, where breezes drift off the Potomac. Located on the river, Nats Stadium is also near Yards Park, a waterfront development with Friday night summer concerts and an 11-inches-deep canal designed for wading children.
The D.C. area goes back in time by offering up cultural festivals featuring casts of costumed re-enactors and celebrants at heritage events. History has never been so colorful! Want to see men in skirts throwing heavy objects? Then the Virginia Scottish Games and Festival is for you. Learn about Scottish culture from competitions involving tossing Braemar stones, weights, hammers, cabers, and sheaves. Pipe and drum contests, Highland dancing, and a British car and bike show will leave you longing for Bonnie Scotland. September 3-4 at Great Meadow in The Plains, VA. 6

There is no more patriotic party than the one D.C. throws for the birth of our nation. Celebrate Independence Day all day long with several events on or near the Mall. Birthday cake is optional! Stop by the National Archives to see the original Declaration of Independence. Lend your own “John Hancock” to a facsimile document from 8:00-9:30 a.m. Haven’t read it? Listen to a dramatic recitation of this important document by historical reenactors at 10:00 a.m.
At 11:45 make your way outside to Constitution Avenue to see America’s National Independence Day Parade with marching bands, floats, and all things red, white, and blue. The festivities start at 7th Street, NW. The traditional “A Capitol Fourth” concert by the National Symphony Orchestra, a 90-minute free musical extravaganza, entertains on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol at 8:00 p.m. Hear Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture with real canons while the major fireworks show on the Mall begins, usually around 9:10 p.m.
Join “King Henry VIII” and his court at the Maryland Renaissance Festival for combat jousting, feasting, and all the pageantry found in the year 1526. Try your hand at games of skill and sport for all ages, pick up a unique handmade craft, and indulge in Renaissance-inspired fare. Weekends in August and September starting August 27 in Crownsville, MD. Experience an authentic 18th-century fair at Mount Vernon with dozens of America’s finest craftspeople demonstrating and selling their wares. The Colonial Market & Fair also includes fire-eating, sword-swallowing, puppet and magic shows, music, and “General Washington” overseeing lively Revolutionary War military drills. Pull up a chair or blanket, bring some popcorn, and catch a flick al fresco. National Harbor hosts outdoor movies every Sunday and Thursday evening on the waterfront.
3. Roll Down the Mall Hop on a Segway and take a guided tour – day or night – of the National Mall and neighboring memorials. Feel the winds of freedom as you sail past the White House on your cool two-wheeler!
4. I Scream, You Scream We all scream for…gelato? Washington has amazing gelatarias that feature organic, locally sourced ingredients. Dolcezza and Pitango are two of the most popular and include mutiple locations throughout the metropolitan area.
5. Go Team! Catch a Washington Nationals baseball game and cheer on the boys of summer. Make the trip to the stadium part of the experience with a water taxi that cruises you right to the door.
7. Rooftop Drinking Enjoy a drink at one of many outside rooftop bars or patios around town. El Centro DF Georgetown is a favorite with its famous margaritas and over 200 tequilas and mezcals.
6. Bike at Night Take the Sunset Bike Tour with Capital City Bike Tours and view the monuments and memorials at night. Or rent a bike and hop on the trail to Mount Vernon, if you’re feeling especially energetic.

This local chain touts its prime, dry-aged burgers grilled over an open flame. Their most popular is the Wellington, a burger topped with caramelized onions, roasted mushrooms, black truffles, and blue cheese crumbles.
Every Wednesday this restaurant features wild game on its menu. If Kangaroo Sliders are too adventurous, try the Showdown At The Border, a burger topped with beef chili, cheddar cheese, Pico de Gallo, and remoulade.
Known for its extensive menu of toppings, Plan B serves up burgers ordered “pink” or “no pink.” Based primarily in New England, this small chain counts among its most popular burgers the “New Englander”, a patty topped with lobster, smoked gouda, caramelized onion, lettuce, tomato, and corn spread.
The restaurant “Top Chef” contestant Spike Mendelsohn runs with his family includes his popular Sunnyside burger with cheese, applewood bacon, fried egg, and Good Stuff sauce on a brioche bun.
A quasi-hamburger, the Chivito boasts tenderloin, mozzarella, black forest ham, bacon, green olives, hard-boiled eggs, escabeche, lettuce, tomato, onion, and mayonnaise on a soft roll. This D.C. institution is part gas station!
An export from NYC, this rowdy restaurant is known for its shakes and burgers, including the SmokeShack, a cheeseburger with all-natural applewood smoked bacon, chopped cherry peppers and Shack Sauce.
The “Embassy of Rock-n-Roll” combines entertainment with dining. Try the Tango Burger, two patties layered with slow-cooked Sloppy-Joes, cheese, barbecue sauce, blue cheese, and horseradish mayonnaise.

NEW, NOTABLE, Kinship
Kyirisan
(1015 7th St, NW)
(1924 8th St, NW)
A new modern American restaurant by acclaimed chef Eric Ziebold, Kinship lists its dishes according to Craft (cooking technique), History (revisited classics), and Ingredients (a specific product), allowing diners to choose their a la carte experience. The category Indulgence is what you would expect— specialty items that lean toward extravagant. Its dishes, like lobster French toast, are creative and unexpected.
This new Chinese-French restaurant in the Shaw neighborhood lightheartedly organizes its menu into three categories: in the ground; on the ground; and under the water. But the chef doesn’t stop there. He lists dishes in order from lightest to richest. The cauliflower tortellini and hanger steak are early favorites, earning praise for

their distinct flavors.
The Dabney (122 Blagden Alley, NW)
Ashlar (116 S. Alfred St, Alexandria)
“An upscale tavern inspired by those that enlivened Alexandria 200 years ago,” is how the creators of Ashlar describe their new restaurant, located in Old Town’s Morrison House hotel. Contemporary tavern fare in the form of small plates, bar snacks, and steak—in addition to a handful of other entrees—are complemented by a wide-ranging drink menu that includes over 25 types of port, sherry, and Madeira. 38
