Happening NOW
No doubt about it, Washington is full of hot air! Capitol Hill notwithstanding, you can beat the heat by hitting the water. Take a water taxi on the Potomac and check out quaint Old Town Alexandria, Virginia and National Harbor, Maryland. Taxis depart from multiple locations in the District regularly and make this mode of transportation a cool way to see the sights. Washington’s baseball team, the Nationals, is hot, but everything is cool at the waterfront stadium, where breezes drift off the Potomac. Located on the river, Nats Stadium is also near Yards Park, a waterfront development with Friday night summer concerts and an 11-inches-deep canal designed for wading children.
The D.C. area goes back in time by offering up cultural festivals featuring casts of costumed re-enactors and celebrants at heritage events. History has never been so colorful! Want to see men in skirts throwing heavy objects? Then the Virginia Scottish Games and Festival is for you. Learn about Scottish culture from competitions involving tossing Braemar stones, weights, hammers, cabers, and sheaves. Pipe and drum contests, Highland dancing, and a British car and bike show will leave you longing for Bonnie Scotland.

There is no more patriotic party than the one D.C. throws for the birth of our nation. Celebrate Independence Day all day long with several events on or near the Mall. Birthday cake is optional! Stop by the National Archives to see the original Declaration of Independence. Lend your own “John Hancock” to a facsimile document from 8:00-9:30 a.m. Haven’t read it? Listen to a dramatic recitation of this important document by historical reenactors at 10:00 a.m.
At 11:45 make your way outside to Constitution Avenue to see America’s National Independence Day Parade with marching bands, floats, and all things red, white, and blue. The festivities start at 7th Street, NW. The traditional “A Capitol Fourth” concert by the National Symphony Orchestra, a 90-minute free musical extravaganza, entertains on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol at 8:00 p.m. Hear Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture with real canons while the major fireworks show on the Mall begins, usually around 9:10 p.m.
Join “King Henry VIII” and his court at the Maryland Renaissance Festival for combat jousting, feasting, and all the pageantry found in the year 1526. Try your hand at games of skill and sport for all ages, pick up a unique handmade craft, and indulge in Renaissance-inspired fare. Weekends in August and September starting August 26 in Crownsville, MD. Experience an authentic 18th-century fair at Mount Vernon with dozens of America’s finest craftspeople demonstrating and selling their wares. The Colonial Market & Fair also includes fire-eating, sword-swallowing, puppet and magic shows, music, and “General Washington” overseeing lively Revolutionary War military drills. WITH
OF THE FOUR SEASONS WASHINGTON, DC
“Meridian Hill Park, in Columbia Heights above U Street, is where people from all races, ages, sexualities, and cultures mingle together and celebrate freedom, diversity, nature, music, sports, love, and dance. Sundays are the best when thousands of people come and cover every free inch of green grass, hiding under the beautiful old trees, dancing around the famous "Drum Circle" - going strong for almost 40 years! The Park turns into a lively example of diversity and beauty on a summer afternoon, showing the heart, true essence, and spirit of the city the 'real' Washington."
“Washington, DC has stunning architecture. Lovely and elegant Dupont Circle, bohemian, artsy and colorful Adams Morgan, historic Capitol Hill, upscale and beautiful Kalorama, newly restored and booming Logan Circle, and diverse and lively U Street (DC’s an African American Broadway in a past life) all are visually inspiring. Although many times frustrating for drivers, DC’s compact nature is beloved by pedestrians, dog walkers, bicycle drivers and people needing a breath of fresh air." 34
nowguides.com
“One of the best ways to see Washington is on a bike tour! DC is one of the most biking friendly cities in the United States. Many of us living in central D.C. commute, run errands, or just enjoy the riding down some the city’s many bike trails. The Rock Creek trail begins in Maryland, goes through the National Zoo, down to Foggy Bottom and Georgetown, and ends at the Potomac River (with a beautiful view of Roosevelt Island, the Key Bridge, and Washington Harbor). Ask your Concierge to arrange one, we have one of the best Bicycle Concierges, Jeff.”
"As far as restaurants go, I personally love Beau Thai and Haydee's of Mount Pleasant. Downtown, my favorites are Kellari (see Rita for best Greek style seafood in DC with some excellent Greek Mezedes), Siroc (quiet, classic Italian just two blocks away from the White House), and Bobby Van's Steakhouse if you’re looking for an old-school American traditional steakhouse (see maitre'd Dave). Northwest DC is always changing and trendier than ever - Logan Circle/14th Street (the Chelsea of DC), boasts nearly 70 dining options, from the casual, ‘famous-foodie’ places. Some of the best new restaurants in DC are popping up on this corridor."

How to Get Around Town Washington, D.C.'s Metro system is one of the safest, cleanest, and most convenient transportation systems in the world. However, rail construction, limited hours, and track outages sometimes leave you out of luck. Great news - the Metro isn't your only option! Check out these alternative methods that will get you to where you need to go in no time. DC Circulator Providing public transportation to DC's biggest attractions and several neighborhoods, the Circulator is only $1 to ride. There are six routes across 136 stops going all over the District and into Rosslyn, VA. Buses arrive every ten minutes at each stop. Download RideDC app on iPhone or Android to get the most up-to-the-minute schedule. Uber Quickly becoming one of the most popular ride share services due its dependability and relatively short wait times. Simply download the Uber app on your smart phone, sign up with a credit or debit card, and begin requesting rides at the tap of a button. Drivers do not accept cash or credit cards, and tip is handled in the ride fare. What's Uber Pool? This service allows you to share a ride with another rider also headed in the vicinity of your destination. This will provide you with the cheapest fare possible, but may prolong your ride by just a bit. Lyft Easily Uber's biggest competition, Lyft has made leaps and bounds in notoriety in the district. Using the same model as Uber, there are very minor discrepancies between the two. Lyft Line, similar to Uber's Pool option, gives riders a cheaper option by sharing a ride with other passengers. Drivers keep !00% of tips left by riders. 42

Capital Bike Share (CBS) With over 350 stations and 3,000 bicycles across DC, Virginia, and Maryland, CBS is an easy way to get you to your destination, while allowing you to enjoy breathtaking views of the city. Download the app and sign up with a credit card and from there you can choose from either a Day Key, or commit to a year-long membership, giving you the opportunity for unlimited rides and duration, all year long. Via Founded on the same principles as Uber and Lyft, Via differs in that it uses their smartphone app and proprietary algorithms to determine if a group of riders in in the same area are requesting a ride in the same direction. A luxury van or Sprinter Van should arrive within five minutes after a ride is requested. Via is more environmentally friendly, charges only a $5 or $7 flat fee, and also gives you the chance to meet people.
