Simple measures to keep your dog odor-free Bad odor is not an uncommon thing for dogs. Ranging from the stench of bacterial and fungal overgrowth under folds of skin, bad breath to flatulence, there are several reasons why your pet dog might be slightly malodorous. However, the menace of bad odor can be fought with some simple measures.

1. Regular Bathing Bathing at suitable intervals is necessary to keep your dog clean. It not only removes the dirt and stains caught on its furs but also keeps your pet safe from germs. A few things you need to remember while bathing your dog: i)

Always inspect every part of your dog’s body for any fungal growth before taking it for a bath. An affected part might require medication.

ii)

Your dog needs a shampoo and a conditioner which is suitable for its fur and skin coat. The choice of products depends on its breed and should be chosen after consulting with a veterinary doctor.

iii)

Always wet your dog’s body completely before applying shampoo.

iv)

Rinse your dog’s body with caution, so that its fur does not get matted.

v)

Dry your dog with a soft towel immediately as wet fur catches dirt easily. If you want to take your dog out in the open just after bathing, ensure that it wears a dog raincoat or coat, so that it doesn't get dirty.

2. Regular Grooming Three common sources of bad odor on a dog’s body are its ears, mouth and coat. i)

Ears require regular cleaning. Buy an ear cleaner for your dog and always use soft towels or cotton to wipe the cleaner from its ears.

ii)

A major cause of bad breath is dental infection. It is extremely important to brush your dog's teeth every few days with a suitable brush and toothpaste.

iii)

Brush your dog's coat on a regular basis. You could also consider chewable dog accessories that will help keep your dog's teeth healthy.

3. Maintaining a healthy diet Another reason your dog might not be smelling too great is flatulence. i)

Always keep a check on dog food as some of them might contain unhealthy additives.

ii)

Figure out if your dog allergic to anything and then avoid them.

iii)

Always prevent your dog from eating anything it shouldn't.

4. Clean your dog's accessories Along with personal care, you also need to maintain the cleanliness of all your dog’s accessories. i)

Clean your dog’s kennel and playpen regularly.

ii)

The bedding and clothes used by your dog need to be changed at appropriate intervals.

iii)

Keep all the accessories used by your dog, from toys to dog umbrellas clean and fresh.
