GOLRAN The company, a family history The history of Golran is first and foremost the story of a family from Mashad, a Persian city, that now stands near the border between Iran and Russia. This is where the adventure began for Hajizadeh Golran when, in 1898, he formed the company that today specializes in premium quality antique and contemporary oriental carpets. It is a story of true passion for the art of Persian carpets, which has endured across eras and distant countries. A family united by shared goals and values has ensured the survival of this tradition to the present day, underpinned and guided by these same principles. The teachings of the great master knotters of the past have become a precious cultural heritage of traditional handcrafting and remain the foundation of all Golran collections, despite technological developments and a shift toward design. From the ancient bazaars to the most modern European markets, from Mashhad to Milan (where the company moved in 1968) and across three generations, today Golran’s descendants continue to run the company with the same skill, reliability, and passion.
L’azienda, una storia di famiglia Quella di Golran è la storia di una famiglia, prima ancora che di un’azienda. Una famiglia originaria di Mashad, città persiana oggi al confine tra Iran e Russia. È da qui, che nel 1898, inizia l’avventura di Hajizadeh Golran, che fonda quella che è oggi un’azienda di tappeti orientali antichi e contemporanei di grande qualità. Una storia fatta di una passione autentica per l’arte dei tappeti persiani, che ha attraversato epoche e paesi molto lontani e che, grazie ad una famiglia unita negli intenti e nei valori fino ad oggi, sostenuta e guidata dagli stessi principi. Gli insegnamenti dei grandi maestri annodatori di allora sono diventati un prezioso background culturale e artigianale che, ancora oggi, nonostante l’evoluzione tecnologica e l’apertura verso il design, sono alla base della loro produzione. Dagli antichi Bazar ai più moderni mercati europei, da Mashad a Milano (dove l’azienda si trasferisce nel 1968), attraversando tre generazioni, i discendenti Golran continuano oggi l’attività dell’azienda con immutata competenza, affidabilità e passione.
LAKE LAKE COLLECTION, design Raw Edges The collection, conceived as second reading of the persian rug, takes its inspiration from the lenticular artist Yaacov Agam who, together with Victor Vasarely, revolutionised the world of optic perception in art. An iridescent collection, capable of moving from the vivid colours of daytime to the less bright shades of the evening, just like the mirror of water of a lake, “agam” in Hebrew, changes its reflection.
LAKE COLLECTION, design Raw Edges La collezione, pensata come rilettura del tappeto persiano, si ispira all’arte lenticolare dell’artista Yaacov Agam che, al pari di Victor Vasarely, ha rivoluzionato il mondo della percezione ottica nell’arte. Una collezione cangiante, capace di passare dai colori vividi del giorno ai dei toni serali più spenti, proprio come muta di riflesso lo specchio d’acqua di un lago, “agam” in ebraico.
“Imagine a rug that looks very vivid and colourful when you leave home, but the very same rug will appear more relaxing and calming when coming back from work. It is like having two approaches for one thing, two different ways to look at it but then when standing at the right place, you could actually see the whole picture. This may sound like illusion confusion but it is all based on existing op-art lenticular technique that thanks to Golran, and their craftsmen in Nepal, has been translated into marvellous rug making. The graphic of the first series is based on traditional kilim, but here in varying heights of pile technique”. Yael Mer & Shay Alkalay, Raw Edges.

È come avere due approcci diversi verso una cosa, due diversi modi di guardare. Eppure, se ci si mette nel posto giusto, è possibile avere una visione complessiva. Potrebbe sembrare un’illusione che crea confusione, ma effettivamente il tutto si basa su una tecnica ottica lenticolare che, grazie a Golran e ai suoi artigiani nepalesi, è stata trasferita nella meravigliosa arte della tessitura dei tappeti. The collection has been selected for major awards, incuding the Elle Deco International Design Awards 2015, The Architizer A+A Awards 2015, and the Dulux Let’s colour Award 201. It has been nominated for the Best British Patterns section of the Elle Decoration British Awards 2014. The Lake Collection won the Wallpaper Design Award 2015 for the Best Optical Illusion.
La collezione è stata selezionata per alcuni importanti riconoscimenti, tra cui l’Elle Decoration International Design Awards 2015, l’Architizer A+ Awards 2015 e il Delux Let’s Colour 2015. Inoltre è stata nominata nella categoria Best British Patterns degli Elle Decoration British Awards 2014. La collezione Lake ha vinto il Wallpaper Design Award 2015 nella categoria Best Optical Illusion.
Raw Edges This official collaboration between Yael Mer & Shay Alkalay started after many years of sharing life, thoughts and ideas. Yael’s main focus includes turning two-dimensional sheet materials into curvaceous functional forms, whereas Shay is fascinated by how things move, function and react. Since their graduation show at the Royal College of Art in 2006, they have received several highly respected awards including The British Council Talented Award, iF Gold Award, Dutch Design Award, Wallpaper* Design Award 2009 and the Elle Decoration International Design Award for best furniture of 2008_09 and awarded as the Designer of the Future for 2009 from Design Miami/ Basel. Their works have been exhibited internationally and can be found within the permanent collection of the MoMA NewYork and other museums. They work for clients including Cappellini, Established & Sons, Moroso, Kvadrat, Stella McCartney, Arco, Mutina, Lema and in addition, Yael & Shay produce from time to time unique and limitededition designs and installations within their own studio in London. Their work has been featured in many major design publications and newspapers worldwide.
La collaborazione ufficiale tra Yael Mer e Shay Alkalay ebbe inizio molti anni fa, con la condivisione di vita, pensieri e idee. Il principale obiettivo di Yael consiste nel trasformare materiali bidimensionali in funzionali forme curve, mentre Shay è affascinato dal modo in cui gli oggetti si muovono, funzionano e reagiscono. Fin dai tempi della laurea al Royal College of Art nel 2006, hanno ricevuto diversi riconoscimenti prestigiosi tra cui The British Council Talented Award, iF Gold Award, Dutch Demjsign Award, Wallpaper* Design Award 2009 e Elle Decoration International Design Award per il migliore articolo d’arredamento del 2008_09. Sono stati inoltre premiati come Designer of the Future per il 2009 da Design Miami/ Basel.
