Apple & Blackberry Pie Recipe Ingredients: • • • • • • • •

2 1/2 pounds apples, peeled, cored, sliced 2 cups blackberries, fresh or frozen 1 cup granulated sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 2 tablespoons flour 1 tablespoon butter, cut in small pieces Pie shell for two-crust 9-inch pie

Preparation: Preheat oven to 375°. Mix the apples and blackberries together in a large bowl. In another bowl, combine the sugar, spices, and flour; gently mix into the fruit mixture. Line a 9-inch pie plate with bottom crust. Spoon the fruit filling into the prepared crust, then dot with butter. Top with the remaining pie crust, leaving a slight overhang. Crimp the edges of the top and bottom crusts together, sealing the fruit into the shell. Whisk the egg yolk and milk together, and brush this wash over the top crust. With a sharp knive, make several slits in the top crist to allow steam to escape. Bake at 375° for 1 to 1 1/4 hours, or until the apples are tender. If crust seems to be browning too quickly, reduce the heat to 325 degrees.

Does it keep us alert? A recent study compared the mood, health and reaction times of regular coffee drinkers. Half the drinkers were secretly given decaffinated coffee and their scores compared with a group drinking ordinary coffee. Initially the decaf group suffered, as their bodies craved the caffeine fix and their scores on hand steadiness, reaction time and alertness dropped. However, by the end of the week and after full withdrawal, not only had their scores returned to pre-test levels but they had reduced their blood pressure, lowered feelings of anxiety and improved their sleep. So caffeine doesn’t actually give you an edge, your performance and alertness is no better than if you never touched the stuff. Research reveals Harmful Consequences Whilst studies on the effects of caffeine are mixed, we do know that it has harmful consequences on different functions within our bodies. Research tells us that people with high blood pressure, heart disease or irregular heartbeat problems should avoid caffeine as it makes the heart beat faster and raises blood pressure. It has been a busy month for police in Basildon, as we have been pooling our resources to reassure residents in light of the recent national outbreaks of violent disorder. I am pleased to say that thus far, it has been relatively quiet in Basildon on that front. Police were actively patrolling the Basildon town centre on August 9, as a group of approximately 350 people gathered in the area. As part of this incident, a 22-year-old man was arrested. On the same night we were called by the fire service to assist them after they came under attack whilst putting out a fire in Gloucester Park by the old swimming pool. Although there were several reports of disorder and damage in Basildon, we had adequate police resources on the ground to deal with it effectively. Enquiries into all of the incidents are ongoing, and I would ask anyone that knows who was involved to do the right thing and call us. The incident at Gloucester Park involving the fire service is absolutely disgraceful; like all the emergency services, the fire service exist to protect the community, and being obstructive and violent towards them whilst they are doing their job is inexcusable. We will make sure that the full force of the justice system is brought against those involved. With several other protests lined up across the district in the near future, we are keeping a eye on things and will be present at each of them to facilitate peaceful protests and ensure there are no breaches of the peace. Although some disorder was experienced in August, this was still a minority of people from the district, and you can rest assured that we are assessing the situation regularly and there will be officers patrolling the area for your safety. During all of these incidents, we have received numerous calls from residents to give us information that has helped us plan and police effectively. Please keep this information coming, as we can only deal with what we know, and by working together we really can make a difference.
