Hi there, Welcome to our July edition It’s hot! Might even be too hot, for some of you. In my opinion bring on the 100 days of summer they promised us. Fingers crossed I can get a day or two to myself to relax in the garden and top up my tan. With the recent changes in the perception of the Buy to Let market regarding taxation and so on, many people are now forming Limited Companies to purchase their new rental property. The Danny Green Fund have had a busy few months supporting children with disabilities as the result of a brain tumour . The charity has recently started funding hippotherapy for a teenager from NottinghamHippotherapy literally means treatment with the horse. This type of therapy positions the children/ teenagers ideally to develop postural control, equilibrium reactions, balance, co-ordination and spatial orientation. There are also psychological, speech, language and cognitive beneďŹ ts. Hippotherapy is extremely enjoyable for the young people taking part and is proving to be beneďŹ cial for the children that the charity supports improving their strength and co ordination which will aid them to achieve their goal of walking independently once again. We are also delighted that we have also been able to provide a play tower for a lovely 5 year old little boy to help his recovery from PFS. The garden play tower will encourage his gross motor

SHED, FENCE, DECKING... Deciduous shrubs that flower in early summer need annual pruning to improve flowering and the roots.

Step 1. Prepare the wood before applying any paint or treatment. Use a stiff brush to get rid of any dirt. If the surface is covered in algae, dip the brush in diluted general purpose cleaner and scrub it clean. Allow the surface to dry before painting. Now is also the time to make any repairs and replace any decayed sections of wood with healthy timber. For small areas, use an exterior wood filler which can then be sanded flush with the surface prior to painting. Step 2. Cover any nearby surfaces with dust sheets in case of overspray or drips. Cover plants that might get splashed and trim back any unwanted foliage to give yourself plenty of space to work. Pin back any climbing plants that can’t be covered or you don’t want to cut back, using plant ties and canes. Step 3. Check you’re happy with the colour by finding a small hidden patch of wood and try it before you stain the whole fence or shed. Step 4. Start in an unpainted area (if you have one) and work your way to a painted area. If using a timber brush or roller. Use the timber brush or roller to apply a thick, even coating along the grain of the timber. Apply brush strokes in the same direction as the grain and be careful not to spread the paint too far.

Avoid runs or drips by not overloading the brush or roller with paint and work it in well. Pick up any wet edges before they begin to dry in a drip shape and don’t let the paint collect in crevices as it will create runs. If using a paint sprayer. Pressurise the sprayer and choose the most suitable spray option provided. For the best results when spraying, use long, sweeping, horizontal arm movements. Hold the nozzle about 15centimetres (cm) from the surface and move along its full width, then drop down and do the same again, overlapping each pass by 50%. This will make sure the whole area is covered with the correct amount of paint. Step 5. Allow the first coat to dry as recommended by the instructions and apply a second coat if required. When you’ve finished, scrape as much paint or treatment off your brush and clean with a paint brush cleaner. Pour any remaining paint in the sprayer back into the paint vessel. Clean the sprayer, nozzles and filters as recommended by the manufacturer.

MOVIE PREVIEW Release Date: 21/07/17 The Dunkirk movie poster above, teases the upcoming World War II epic directed by Christopher Nolan (Inception, The Dark Knight). Dunkirk, which Nolan is directing from his own original screenplay, has cast a crop of newcomers who include Fionn Whitehead (ITV‘s Him), Jack Lowden (’71), Aneurin Barnard (Citadel), and One Direction singer/ songwriter Harry Styles. Recent Academy Award winner Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies), Kenneth Branagh (Valkyrie), Cillian Murphy (Inception), James D’Arcy (Cloud Atlas) and Tom Hardy (The Revenant) will be the more experienced members of what is said will be a largely young/unknown ensemble cast. The Dunkirk movie opens as hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in. The large scale film will be shot on a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large format film photography for maximum image quality and high impact immersion. Shooting will utilize many of the real locations of true-life events, which form the background for the story. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner Emma Thomas.

Festival Essentials Despite the obvious of your tent, money and tickets, I would say these are my top 10 tips for gear you should consider taking.

FESTIVAL TOP TIPS

If you’re a festival virgin then we’re here to help with some advice on how to survive your festival experience for the first time, below you’ll find a range of advice on what should be in your festival essential kit, how to select your spot and staying safe. Choose a bigger tent then you need - This is probably the biggest mistake people make, a 2-man tent is for 2 people lying side by side in sleeping bags it does not account for the mountains of stuff you will be bringing along with you! Choose your spot carefully - Arrive early for the best choice of pitches. Try and choose a spot that is within site of landmarks you’ll remember and will be visible when you wake up to a field full of tents as far as the eye can see. Whatever you do stay clear of the toilets and anything down hill of the toilets unless you like the smell! Also steer clear of the security towers and lights unless you like the constant noise of a generator and bright light shinning through your tent all night. Make friends with you neighbours - Getting to know the people who have pitched their tents near yours it will add to your festival experience and also to the amount of eyes that will watch over your camp when your not there. Hide your valuables when asleep - Don’t make it easy for thieves by stuffing your wallet/money or valuables in your boots by the front of the tent put them inside you sleeping bag or by your head so they are the furthest away from the entrance.

Ear Plugs - Might sound silly but trust me when your trying to get to sleep with people snoring, talking and playing music you’ll be glad you’ve got them. Poncho - The good old British summer time always likes to throw in a shower or 2 so be prepared. Bin bags - You will need somewhere to put your dirty clothes and they are great for keeping your clean clothes dry should your tent leak. Wet Wipes - You don’t have the luxury of a shower so you’ll need something to freshen you up and these are the best solution. Antibactirial Hand Gel - If you do use the Toilets then the free Hand Gel in them will run out in hours so don’t forget to take your own. Folding Chair - Trust me you will want one to sit in first thing in the morning and last thing at night as you all sit around chatting about the day. Portable Phone Charger The only way of getting hold of your mates is you phone so ensure you have something to recharge your phone while your there.

RISKY BEHAVIOUR SESSIONS FOR PARENTS AND CARERS If they don’t know, do you know? Young people spend a lot of time on social media, the internet and socialising. Most of the time it is normal adolescent activity but sometimes it hides a risk to a child.

Love Your Borough For the second consecutive year, Community safety partners will have a presence at the Council’s Love Your Borough Event taking place on Saturday 16th September from 10am to 4pm in Basildon Town Centre.

Would you be able to tell the difference? Basildon Community Safety Partnership has organised information sessions for parents and carers that will provide you with important knowledge on how to safeguard your children from risks associated with online safety and gangs.

The event will include a community safety element to align with Basildon Council’s corporate promise to ‘endeavour to keep communities safe and healthy’ with presence confirmed from Essex Police, Basildon and Billericay Street Pastors, Basildon Neighbourhood Watch, Victim Support, Essex Youth Service and Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital.

Unlike normal presentations these will be hard hitting, impactive and give you a real insight into the very real risks our young people face in their everyday life and most importantly how you can recognise these risks and more effectively communicate with your children to keep them safe.

Resident are encouraged to attend the event which aims to instil pride within the community to highlight Basildon as a good place to live, work and visit, to celebrate the borough’s achievements and opportunities, and to provide information on local services.
