Volunteers needed to help train assistance dogs for Canine Partners
Volunteers are being sought by national charity Canine Partners to take puppies into their own homes and begin their early training to be assistance dogs for people with disabilities. Canine Partners is specifically looking for volunteers, known as puppy parents, in South Essex, who can take a pup into their home from the age of seven weeks until they are 12-14 months old. Essex Puppy Satellite Trainer Emily Lawrence said: “Puppy parents teach the assistance-dogs-in-training basic obedience, social skills and core tasks that are essential before they move on to advanced training, where their skills are refined specifically for a disabled person’s needs. “Volunteering as a puppy parent is a rewarding opportunity for people who live in and around the area. Puppy parents train puppies in the early stages of their development before they go on to advanced training and are matched with someone who has a disability. “Although previous experience with dogs is not required, a puppy parent will need to be home most of the day, have a secure dog-friendly garden and have the stamina to manage an active young puppy.” Canine Partners will provide food and equipment for the puppy and cover all veterinary costs for the duration of the puppy parent relationship. Baked Plums on Toast Approx 600-650g plums, 75g unsalted butter, 40ml brandy 8 slices of ciabatta cut at an angle, 2 vanilla pods 200g caster sugar, 1 thick skinned lemon, 150ml mascarpone Ingredients Serve Four People.
Method
Ingredients
Prep 35 min › Cook 25 min › Ready in 1 hr

Preheat oven to 200˚C Slice the vanilla pods in half lengthways and scrape out the seeds with a teaspoon then combine with the sugar in a bowl.

Slice the plums in half and remove the stones then place in a largish bowl. Add the vanilla sugar and the brandy. Toss together and leave to marinate for 30 minutes to an hour.

Spoon the mascarpone into a bowl & grate the zest of 1/4 lemon, & stir.

Butter the ciabatta then lay each slice buttered side up in an oven proof dish lightly dotted/greased with the remaining butter large enough so they don't overlap. Spoon the fruit onto the ciabatta and drizzle over some of the liquor. Bake in the oven for 20 - 25 minutes, then remove and place a spoonful of the mascarpone cream over the top of each slice. Return to the oven for a couple of minutes until the mascarpone starts to just melt and collapse. Serve hot.

LAWN CARE IN SEPTEMBER When you should sow grass seed. You can sow Lawn UK lawn seed mixtures at any time from late March to mid-October providing that in periods of unusually dry weather the seedbed is kept constantly moist until the grass is about 6cm (2.5 inches) high. Always water with a fine spray; to great a force of water will displace the seeds. It is also worth noting, that there needs to be adequate warmth in the soil, 6-8 degrees Celsius is required for germination, and this is usually when the air temperature is above 10 degrees Celsius. If during periods of drought, and there is no hosepipe ban, you may decide to water the area. You must ensure the ground is thoroughly soaked and watering must be done on a regular basis until the grass has become established. Occasional light watering won’t be beneficial, this will do more harm than good.

Rather than turning on the TV out of habit, it can be valuable to plan your own and your children’s programme viewing and to watch the programmes together and use them as point of discussion. If your child knows that they are limited to, say, one hour of TV on a school night, that they are going to be more discerning in their viewing choices as well as having more time for active play, reading, family time and homework.
