Make new beds and borders - mark the shape with sand trickled from a bottle, remove the top layer of growing vegetation and dig the ground over, incorporating as much organic matter as possible. If you are making a bed in the lawn, remove the turf – if you dig it in the buried grass will regrow. Clean and repair your garden tools, book the lawn mower in for a service and check garden furniture for any rot. When it is warm enough, treat sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative; brushes and rollers are fine for most things, however a sprayer is well worth buying for tricky projects such as woven panels!

The General April Gardening Tasks A few more general year to year tasks that will bring you a step closer to loving your garden. Beware of late frosts and keep vulnerable plants and new shoots protected at night if frost is forecast. Don’t be tempted to put out tender bedding until much later on in the month, and even then be prepared to cover it if necessary. Deadhead daffodils and narcissi; give them a liquid feed or a sprinkling of bonemeal and then let them die down. Don’t cut off the leaves as they are necessary to replenish the bulb for next year. Keep deadheading spring bedding to keep it looking neat, and to encourage new flowers. Continue with the spring cleaning. Hoe your borders, getting rid of weeds before they take hold - annual weeds such as bitter cress and groundsel are enough of a nightmare without allowing them to go forth and multiply by seeding. If it’s dry, attack ground elder and the like with systemic weed killer painted onto the leaves. Mulch away while you can still see what you are doing and before the herbaceous growth really takes off. Use your own garden compost or leaf mould, well rotted manure, the contents of out-ofdate grow bags or ready-made soil conditioner. Now the soil is warming up and things are starting to grow, add general purpose fertiliser before covering with mulch especially in borders, the fruit and vegetable patch and containers. If you have already mulched, draw it back (if possible), tease the soil a little, add fertiliser and replace the mulch. Carry on removing moss and weeds from paths, terraces and drives.

Now is the time to wage war on slugs and snails. They love tulips and delicacies such as the delicious young shoots of delphiniums and the like, so use pet-friendly slug pellets, and drench the ground around hostas with liquid slug killer to exterminate slugs below the surface. Keep an eye out for snails and pick them off - what you do with them is up to you. Birds are your friends here - flat stones artfully located are useful accessories for birds to practise their snail catching techniques.

Chicken and Asparagus Risotto 500ml chicken stock,1 tbsp olive oil, 3 cloves garlic 2 skinless, boneless chicken breast fillets - cubed 2 tsp olive oil, 1/2 large onion, minced 1 cup Carnaroli or Arborio rice 125ml white wine, 250g asparagus, finely chopped 1/2 tsp dried oregano, 1/2 teaspoon dried basil salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 75g freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Bring chicken stock to the boil in a small saucepan, then keep warm over low heat. Heat 1 teaspoon olive oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir in the garlic and cook 30 seconds until fragrant. Add the cubed chicken, and continue cooking until firm and lightly browned; set aside. Heat remaining 2 teaspoons olive oil in the saucepan and cook onions until they soften and turn translucent, about 1 minute. Stir in the rice, and continue cooking until the rice turns opaque, and the onion begins to brown. Stir in the wine and asparagus; cook, stirring constantly, until the wine evaporates. Reduce heat to medium, and stir in 1/3 of the hot chicken stock. Cook, stirring constantly, until all of the liquid has been absorbed, 8 to 10 minutes. Stir in another 1/3 of the chicken stock and continue cooking and stirring until absorbed, 8 to 10 minutes. Season the risotto with oregano and basil. Pour in the remaining stock, and stir until absorbed again, 8 to 10 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper, then stir in the Parmesan cheese and chicken cubes.

Before reading this, check that your children aren’t looking over your shoulder because this article comes with a health warning: it can make you and your family fitter. I’ve been thinking about how families can be more active at home without resorting to some sort of health camp regime. I loved PE lessons at school but I know that not everyone has fond memories. If your recollection of school exercise is putting you off getting more active, then I’m pretty sure that your children will pick up on this. So take a fresh look. Exercise can mean a five-a- side on a Saturday morning but it can also mean disco dancing to an aerobics DVD in the privacy of your own home, it can mean a brisk hour’s walk around your local area or taking the kids swimming once a week and actually putting on your costume and getting in the water yourself. We’ve all read quick tips on introducing more exercise into our lives, such as taking the stairs instead of the lift, parking further away, walking instead of using the car, hiding the TV remote etc. But reading needs to be translated into doing. Children learn by example so you

Choose activities that are fun, not exhausting. Develop a repertoire of several activities that you can enjoy, for example walking the dog (or the neighbour’s dog), roller-blading, inviting friends over for a friendly football match or volleyball contest, ice skating, taking a picnic on a bike ride, table tennis or how about getting hold of a skipping rope and seeing who is the best skipper in your family. It needn’t be a costly activity: a frisbee and a walk to the local park will give you change from a fiver. If you look around there are often free local community activities. Where I live there is a local free saturday morning running club! Check out your local leisure centre. Some local exercise classes hold special sessions for families so you can all chill out with yoga, tai chi or pilates. At our South Woodham Clinic I care for several people that are involved with the South Woodham Club. It has a great variety of classes and equipment and the staff always seem to really happy and helpful irrespective of the question! Reward yourselves at special milestones. If your family manage a half an hour’s exercise three times a week for a month then let the children choose a special family treat. Having a fun goal to aim for is very motivational. Talk to each other! Find out what your child and your partner think about their fitness levels and how they’d like to increase their activity and fitness levels. Talk about the benefits of exercise (more energy, stronger, more supple, better health, looking better etc). Get ready. Learn how to warm up and cool down properly and always wear appropriate clothes (especially proper footwear) and any necessary safety gear (eg. a cycling helmet). If you don’t know how to warm up or cool down, ask your kids as their PE teacher will have taught them this or do a quick internet search. Be silly. Really, when was the last time you got mud on your clothes? Do you remember how much fun playing tag or kite-flying or playing catch is? Teach your kids your favourite playtime game when you were at school. Remember posture.

St. George the Patron Saint of England

aint George is the patron saint of England – and we celebrate Saint George’s Day every year on 23 April. Although Saint George is associated with England, bravery and honour, the real Saint George wasn’t English at all! He was, in fact, born in Turkey in the 3rd Century, but not very much is known about him. The most famous legend of Saint George is of him slaying a dragon. However, this story only became popular in the 12th Century – long after Saint George had died. In the Middle Ages, it was common to use dragons in stories to represent the Devil. There are many different versions of the story but the most common is the following. Saint George travelled to Libya. When he arrived there he found it had a large pond, almost as big as a lake, where a ferocious dragon lived. The dragon was terrorising the country and, every day, the people had been feeding the dragon a sheep to appease it. When the sheep had all gone, the dragon had demanded that the people sacrifice a young maiden to him each day. Saint George found that all the young

girls had now been killed and only the King of Egypt’s daughter was left. Unless a knight could be found to slay the dragon, the princess would be sacrificed the next day. Saint George was determined to save the princess, and the next day he rode out to the lake. When he arrived, he found the princess there, waiting to be fed to the dragon. Saint George sent her home to the palace and approached the dragon’s cave. When the dragon heard Saint George’s horse approaching, he came out of his cave and roared at him. The dragon was huge and its roar sounded like thunder, but Saint George was not afraid. He struck the monster with his spear, but the dragon’s scales were so hard that the spear simply broke into pieces. Saint George fell from his horse but did not give up. Instead, he rushed at the dragon and used his sword to slay it under its wing where there were no scales. The dragon fell dead at Saint George’s feet. Happy St. George’s Day Everyone

All the way from Lancashire Danny Green Fund

The Danny Green Fund have recently funded a 2 week intensive physiotherapy course at Benfleet Physiotherapy for a 17 year old girl who has travelled from Lancashire with her mum to use the fantastic equipment that is available at the physiotherapy centre, equipment that is not available locally. Since being diagnosed with a brain tumour and Posterior Fossa Syndrome Demi has struggled with her balance and is unable to walk unaided. Demi has been using the GIGER MD which is the piece of equipment that is really hoped will help Demi to walk independently once again. The GIGER MD® Locomotion

System is only one of two in the UK, the other being at The Stoke Mandeville Hospital. The Giger MD therapy device encourages all four limbs to move together in a synchronized pattern to stimulate the nervous system in a manner similar to walking. It is hoped that the intensive sessions will be a huge push towards Demi’s goal of walking independently once again. After just 2 days Demi’s mum could see a real improvement in Demi’s strength and confidence. We are thankful for the support of Nigel and the

staff of Benfleet Physiotherapy for helping to support Demi’s recovery from PFS, to help her to regain her independence and helping her dream of walking unaided to become a reality. Demi will be returning to Essex at Easter to build on the improvements that she has already made in such a short space of time.
