Hi there, Welcome to our December edition I know it’s early for a lot of you reading this but Merry Christmas everyone! I always love Christmas but for some reason this year I’m in an even more festive mood than usual. I’m writing this mid-November and I’ve already got an urge to put on the Fairytale of New York. Sadly the rest of the office insist I wait till the 1st! As much as the majority of us love this time of year, we must not forget about the older people that are feeling more vulnerable and lonely at this time of year. As busy as we all are simply offering to pick up something whilst doing your shopping or just popping in for a 15 minute cup of tea could really make their Christmas. Every month, we have donated a half page to a local Charity to give them a bit of exposure. This month we have given it to the very hardworking and deserving Danny Green Fund. Start by finely chopping the nuts.

Work the ingredients until they form a dough.

Place the dough on the work surface and divide into 40 pieces.

Form round pastries, glaze with egg white and then dip in the chopped nuts. Make a well in the middle of each pastry. Place on parchment-lined baking sheets. Bake in the centre of the oven at 175 °C for approx. 15 minutes. Leave to cool on a wire rack.

Melt the ingredients for the topping together in a bowl over a bain-marie. Leave to cool and then whisk the mixture using an electric whisk. Click or pipe peaks onto the pastries. Store in a cool place.

MAKE A FROG &TOAD ABODE Create an underground den where frogs, toads and newts can find safe lodging through the winter’s chill.
Amphibians like to hibernate in a cool (but not cold), dark and damp shelter, safely away from predators. Some frogs use the mud at the bottom of ponds, but many amphibians spend the winter on land. They do like to get a little way underground if they can, so give them a helping hand by creating their very own mansion, full of cavities galore. 1. Choose your location. Basically you need somewhere where you can dig a hole in the ground about 30-45cm deep where you can part-bury your collection of logs and stones. A shady or semi-shady spot is ideal. It doesn’t necessarily have to be near a pond, but within a hop and a leap of one is no bad thing! If you’ve already dug a damp ditch for diversity, you could use part of the bank you created when doing that! 2. Dig a round hole with a flat bottom. Pile the soil to one side as you go. Once big enough, fill it with your assorted rubble and logs. The idea is that the bricks and rocks are stable enough that they won’t collapse and crush creatures within, but at the same time don’t pack it all down. Imagine that you are creating a higgledypiggledy underground maze. There has got to be a myriad of hidden winding corridors ranging from a few millimetres wide through to a few centimetres, all leading deep into the pile.

3. Continue to pile material up above ground level – it is really useful to continue to build the pile into a low mound. 4. To cap it off. If you’ve go some, put some builders ballast over the rubble and logs, followed by the soil back over the top. What you don’t want to do is close up all of the entrances - you still need to be able to see lots of gaps around the edges. You can pile the soil over the back half of the abode so that the front entrances are all clear of soil. 5. Finishing touches. If you like, sprinkle a little wildflower seed over the soil on top of and around the edges of your mansion – amphibians will love their garden path being damp and sheltered. Or you could just add some branches and twigs for camouflage. Over time, rain and gravity will push some of the soil back down into the holes, so after several years you may need to create another home. But this one should last for a few seasons.

Think sudoko, cleverly-marketed computer games and ‘brain exercises’ are the answer? Think again, regular exercise, such as a brisk walk three times a week, is the key to keeping, even growing, your cognitive powers as you age. Numerous animal and human studies have shown that regular exercise improves what is called our ‘executive functioning’. This is controlled by an area of the brain just behind your forehead and it is what allows us to choose appropriate behaviour, inhibit inappropriate behaviour and concentrate in the face of distractions. Executive function also influences basic cognitive functions such as processing speed, response speed and working memory. Executive function starts to decline when people reach their 70s. But elderly people who have been athletic all their lives have much better executive function than sedentary people of the same age. Studies have indicated that when inactive people get more exercise, even starting in their 70s, their executive function improves. So do you need to start training for the Olympics in order to remember your shopping list? No! Even just a regular programme of fast walking for 30 to 60 minutes three or more times a week will make a difference to your brain functioning. Plus you get the added benefits of improvements to your muscle tone, circulation and general health! A big worry for us all as we age is the risk of dementia but again, we should consider an active life as part of our protection against mental decline. People who exercise regularly in middle age are one-third as likely

to get Alzheimer’s disease in their 70s as those who did not exercise. Even people who begin exercising in their 60s have their risk reduced by half. We’re not really sure exactly how exercise helps brain function: theories being investigated are the increased production of the feel-good hormone serotonin, improved blood circulation to the brain and the increased production of a growth protein that may stimulate the generation of brain cells and the connections between them. What is known is that regular exercise slows the age related shrinkage of the part of the brain responsible for executive function. So put down that pencil, don’t bother investing in expensive computer games (which encourage you do spend more time on the sofa) and pull on some trainers. If it’s a while since you exercised regularly or you have some problems with backache, foot or knee pain then I’d recommend seeing your local chiropractically trained practitioner before you begin a new exercise programme. It’s better to start with a properly aligned and functioning body than to worsen niggling problems by ignoring them. Remember, it’s never too late or too early to begin an active life.
