by Mark Keevil from Green Thumb 1 Mow it correctly The best thing you can do for your lawn is to make sure you’re cutting it properly. Many problems are caused by not mowing often enough, then cutting it too short when you do. Here’s how to get it right: Cut your lawn at least once a week in the growing season and never shorter than 2.5cm (1”). If you do allow it to get a little long, mow it in a couple of stages – never take more than a third of its length in any one cut. If we have a hot dry Summer, consider raising the height on your lawn mower a notch. By allowing the grass to grow a little longer will ensure it keeps its green colour longer. 2 Treat it correctly Feeding your lawn at the right time, with the right product, is essential. Continue to have your lawn professionally treated – when the rain does come, the lawn will recover more quickly. 5 Control moss Moss is the most common of lawn complaints and is most prolific between autumn and spring. Some conditions make it more likely to thrive. Lawns that are compacted due to regular usage or that sit on clay soil, which is particularly common in Essex, can’t dissipate water from the surface - and moss loves these damp conditions. Gardens with a lot of thatch are also high risk. Made up of stems, roots and leaves, thatch forms a mat on the lawn’s surface, preventing moisture, oxygen and nutrients reaching the roots.

with Honey-Ginger Barbecue Sauce You need: • 1 1/4 cups warm Honey-Ginger Barbecue Sauce • 16 ears of corn, shucked • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil • 1 teaspoon salt

Prepare Honey-Ginger Barbecue Sauce and divide equally into two bowls. Prepare grill for direct-heat cooking over medium-hot charcoal (medium-high for gas.) Drizzle corn with oil on a large rimmed baking sheet, and sprinkle evenly with salt. Lightly rub oil and salt into corn. Oil grill rack, then grill corn (covered only if using gas), turning frequently, until lightly browned and tender, 6 to 8 minutes. Move corn to different positions on grill if hot spots are present. Brush corn with some of prepared sauce and grill, turning, until sauce is hot, 1 to 2 minutes. Serve with reserved sauce.
