Amy broke her own British record in February 2014 in the 200m Free Style and 200m Back Stroke at the Essex Counties in Basildon. Well done Amy we are proud to have you as a Patron. On 5th July over 30 ladies will be taking part in the Southend Colourthon to raise funds for The Danny Green Fund. The ‘Moonlight Colourthon‛ is a sponsored walk with a difference. Walkers walk a half marathon (13.1 miles) at night and
dress as brightly as their imagination will allow them to! This year‛s event sets off from Chalkwell Park at 8pm on Saturday 5th July, 2014. Raspberry & Chocolate Nests You need: oil, for greasing, 25 g cocoa powder, 175 g margarine, 175 g caster sugar, 150 g self-raising flour, ½ tsp baking powder, 3 eggs, 300 ml double cream, 100 g white chocolate curl, 250 g raspberries

Preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas mark 4. Lightly brush the insides of a 12 section deep muffin tin with a little oil and line the base of each one with a circle of greaseproof or non-stick baking paper. Put the cocoa into a small bowl, mix in 3 tablespoons boiling water until a smooth paste then leave to cool. Put the margarine, sugar, flour and baking powder into a mixing bowl, add the cocoa paste and the eggs and beat until smooth. Divide the mixture evenly between the sections of the muffin tin, smooth the tops level then bake for 12-15 minutes until well risen and the tops spring back when lightly pressed with a fingertip. Leave for 5 minutes then loosen the edges with a knife, turn out on to a cooking rack and peel off the paper. Whip the cream in a mixing bowl until it forms soft swirls. Split the cakes in half then sandwich back together with the cream, spreading the remainder on top. Arrange the raspberries in the centre of each cake then sprinkle the chocolate curls around the edge to make a nest. Arrange on a plate to serve.

Don’t let your garden become rich pickings for criminals With the worst of the weather hopefully behind us, we can start to consider riding our bikes, mowing the lawn and attending to our gardens. What we often don’t appreciate is the value these items accumulate to; however, potential thieves are all too aware. Garages and sheds by the nature of their construction and position are always going to vulnerable. Quite often the supplied locks provide just the barest minimum security and are easily overcome, so please consider the following: • Never leave your shed door unlocked and ensure that you have a good quality lock on your doors and windows. Ensure that garden equipment is locked away
• Never leave spare keys in your garden, garage or shed • On garage door consider adding locking bolts to both sides of the “Up and Over” garage doors as they tend to be weak. Alternatively, consider using a garage door defender in the ground in front of the door. • With sheds, coach bolts and plate the padlock hasp sections to the frame and door. Use a good quality closed shackle padlock and ensure that the hinges cannot be unscrewed. • Avoid storing valuable items in your shed. If this is not an option, consider locking away more valuable items in a lockable secure box. • Consider using “Ground Anchors” or “Shed Shackles” to chain larger items to; keep chains tight so that it is not in contact with a surface it can be struck against • If it is safe to do so, consider screwing your shed windows shut or fitting window locks. Protect windows with a wire mesh and fit a curtain or white wash the windows to prevent prying eyes. Alternatively, hang curtains in your windows as this will make it difficult for a burglar to see inside • Visibly mark up your garden equipment such as lawnmowers, plant pots and bikes with your house number and postcode as this reduces the value to the thief; you can even register serial numbers free of charge at www.immobilise.com . • It is also worth fitting a shed alarm to the shed or garage, and adding security lighting these are relatively inexpensive and available from most DIY/hardware stores. If you have a house alarm consider extended this to cover the garage. • Garden lighting covering all areas of your garden such as Patio doors, Garage entrance, side paths etc. Whilst out in the garden do not neglect your home security: • Ensure that all windows are closed and that all doors are locked • That your car/home keys are not left to close to any door or window. • Ensure that no items are left on show in your car and that the sunroof and windows are shut.
