Hi there, Welcome to our August edition. This is our 10th edition of our Canvey Island magazine , Basildon Magazine has been running for over 3 years now. How to ‘Get Back on the Wagon’ Sometimes we all 'fall off the wagon'. We slip up on our diets or miss a work out. www.TheDannyGreenFund.org.uk The Danny Green Fund have been very busy for the last few months holding various events to raise funds which enables us to help fund research into brain tumours and helping children in Great Ormond Street hospital suffering from Posterior Fossa Syndrome as the result of a brain tumour. The Family Fun Day at Hockley Community Centre on Saturday 22nd June was a great success. The sun was shining and families enjoyed the bouncy castle, sumo suits, bouncy obstacle course and lots of fun fair stalls. Thank you to everyone who helped on the day and to everyone who came and supported the charity making the day such a great success. Three Canvey sisters participated in the Southend Colourthon on 6th July for The Danny Green Fund raising over £1000 for the charity.The sisters - Amy Vinnicombe, Katie Jeffryes and Faye Bailey said "We wanted to give something back to our community. We discussed taking part in the Moonlight Colourthon as a team and wanted to support a local charity that would have been possibly over-looked in this event otherwise.

We chose to support The Danny Green Fund, as we were so moved and inspired by Danny's brave fight and journey through his brain tumour, plus his family's ability to think of others when their own lives have been crushed with the loss of a loved one. We aim not only to raise money through walking the half marathon but to create awareness of the charity. We're just three sisters, trying to spread the word and help make a difference. " The girls completed 13.2 miles in 3hrs 45mins. Thank you to the three sisters and to a family friend Dawn Willmott who also took part in the Colourthon for supporting The Danny Green Fund. The Danny Green Fund is also going to attend the All Party Parliamentary Brain Tumour Group AGM next Tuesday at The Houses of Parliament to discuss research funding. Our patron Rebecca Harris MP will also be attending. Canvey Island FC is kindly hosting a pre season friendly against Concorde Rangers on 19th July at Prospects Stadium in aid of The Danny Green Fund and The Indee Rose Trust. Please come along and support two great local charities. Kickoff is at 7.45pm. Ticket prices are £10 adults, £6 concessions and £1 for accompanied children under the age of 12.

Danny‛s dad Chris and several family friends completed the London to Brighton Bike Ride on 16th June and will also be taking part in the London to Southend bike ride on 21st July. Thank you everyone who took part and to Phoenix karate club and The Woolfclub who are also taking part in the London to Southend bike ride next week to raise funds for The Danny Green Fund. Looking for the secret to a healthy garden this year? The magic ingredient that can make your plants look and perform their best, no matter what Mother Nature throws at them? A secret that works for edibles and ornamentals? I can sum it up in one word – SOIL. I know, it’s a little boring but it’s true. All the magic starts with your soil.

them into your lawn in the fall and use others for compost. And don’t be so quick to clean away all the small branches and twigs that fall down. As they decompose, they help feed the soil and help your plants to grow.

When you have healthy soil that is alive with all sorts of organic matter, your plants will thank you. Sure, some organic matter is dead but others, like bacteria, fungi, nematodes and earthworms, are most definitely alive. A mere handful of healthy soil can have over 6 billion organisms in it.

Start with a soil test. If you’re not sure where to send your soil for a soil test, check with your local garden centre as many will test a sample for free. A good soil test will help you understand what’s happening now and how to proceed. Interpreting the results of a soil test can be frustrating so check out these helpful resources.

Did you know that healthy plants put as much as 80% of their energy into growing their root systems? It’s natural to think about plant growth as only happening above the soil because, let’s face it, the ‘above-the-soil’ stuff is why we buy one plant and not another. But all the really important growth is happening in the soil, hidden away from us. Since it all starts with the soil, one of the most important things any gardener can do is feed the soil. In turn, the soil will feed the plants. If you think about it, it’s actually quite simple.

Once you know what your baseline in, begin to correct it as needed. Use organic amendments, compost and compost tea to start feeding your soil. Remember to test your soil every few years to make sure your cure is working.

OK, maybe simple is the wrong word.The intricacies of soil biology and chemistry and how they are inter-related is quite complex.Without getting too technical, it’s the bacteria and fungi in your soil that helps break down all the organic matter so your plants get nourished and grow.The goal of building a healthy soil is to have lots, like billions and billions, of bacteria, and loads of fungi living in your soil.The more the merrier when it comes to critters living in your soil.

Add different types of critters (bacteria and fungi), depending on what your soil and plants need. Generally speaking, trees, shrubs, vines and perennials prefer a soil with more fungi in it. Annuals and veggies prefer a soil with more bacteria in it and lawn grasses benefit from a soil with a balanced amount of fungi and bacteria (depending on the type of grass you’re growing, it might like a slightly more bacterial soil).

Fallen leaves, branches & twigs all feed the soil. Building healthy soil is easier than it sounds. But it can take time, and patience. Remember, some of the best ingredients for building healthy soil are probably already in your garden.

When it comes to compost and compost teas, just remember they are easily tweaked to make them more fungal or more bacterial.The food sources used to make them influence their final composition. Different ‘recipes’ call for different ingredients which results in a different finished products.The end result may look the same but your plants will react differently to the different ingredients. I know it sounds confusing, but just remember all compost is not created equally. If you’re buying finished compost, it’s OK to ask what ingredients went into the recipe.

Allowing the leaves from your deciduous trees to remain in your garden, if possible, is one of the best ways to build your soil. Mulch

Once you get to an optimally healthy soil, maintain the soil at that healthy level. It’s kind of like shampoo, rinse, repeat, just for your garden.

Canvey Island Town Council

News from Canvey Island Town Council Announcement of Sponsorship

Partnership working

Oikos is sponsoring a two-year wildlife and conservation programme in eight primary and junior schools on Canvey Island, starting in Winter/Spring 2013/14. A £14,000 fund will be spent on four bird feeding stations, three wildlife/butterfly gardens and one garden patch. There will be one project per school including educational visits, equipment and materials for the two years the project runs. Canvey Island Town Council’s Wildlife and Conservation Forum will run the programme along with local partners RSPB and Groundwork South Essex. Cllr Doreen Anderson, Chairman of Canvey Island Town Council commented: “This is great news that we will be able to move ahead with this very worthwhile programme thanks to Oikos who have made it possible.”

Canvey Island Town Council presented a certificate to the Castle Point Wildlife Group recently to recognise the two organisations agreement to work in partnership together on joint projects. Councillor Doreen Anderson, Chairman of the Town Council said: “We are pleased to officially acknowledge working in partnership with Castle Point Wildlife Group. The group does a lot of good work on the island to conserve and protect Canvey Island’s wildlife and green spaces which makes a real difference in the community. We look forward to working with them on joint projects in the future.”

Fun & Games at Seafront Canvey Island Town Council’s Community Warden is arranging for the Port of London Authority’s Riverside Trailer to visit Canvey Island seafront at Labworth car park on Saturday, 17th August from 10am to 2pm. The day will be aimed at young people and promote water safety including a giant snakes and ladders game. The Community Warden will have an information display and will be handing out free dog poo bags.

Free Dog Micro Chipping Canvey Island Town Council’s Community Warden is arranging for The Dogs Trust to visit the island on Saturday, 31st August. Free micro chipping will be available on the day at Canvey Lake’s Denham Road car park.
