Well it’s finally here everyone! Christmas is coming and the goose is getting fat! Just like everyone I think, I love Christmas, it’s great seeing family and friends more than I usually would and exchanging gifts with the ones I love. I truly hope you all enjoy Christmas as much as possible. Try not to eat or drink too much and if the snow does finally come then drive safe! By adding a shallow ditch – (or what’s called a ‘rill’ on our nature reserves), you can create a wider variety of homes for nature. It will mimic natural undulations in our countryside, and give hedgehogs and reptiles a lush byway

1. CHOOSE WHERE TO DIG YOUR DITCH Make sure you’re not digging along the line of any services, like electricity, sewage or water pipes!It’s really up to you to decide where to put it. You could create it at the far end of your garden. Or be brave and put it alongside a lawn or flowerbed. Just be careful it’s not where someone could trip. 2. MARK OUT THE LINE of your ditch before you start digging. Make it as long as you can - a good minimum length is one metre. You can use tent pegs or piece of garden hose or small bag of sand to mark it out. 3. START DIGGING! It’s up to you how deep you go. About 30 cm (1 ft) is good, but make sure the sides are gently sloping (45 degrees is fine) so that creatures can get in and out and across your ditch.You can use the excavated earth as a bank on one side of your ditch - it uses your spoil and creates another microhabitat.

Some time ago I wrote an advice column offering tips on making health goals achievable and specific, on breaking them down into chunks and on how to keep your motivation up. This year, I’d like to add that it’s important to keep in mind why you want to make a change in your life.

What’s Your New Year’s Resolution? It’s time to start thinking about what you’d like to achieve in the new year.

E ven if you haven’t made specific New Year’s resolutions this month, I bet that “hmm, I’m going to try to live healthier/get fitter/lose weight/exercise more this year” has crossed your mind at least once. Similar thoughts probably occurred to you last year as you wallowed in the post holidays slump dealing with the remnants of a cold, hangovers and excess weight. I also bet that around 80 per cent of you didn’t stick to that resolution. So why bother this year if it’s so difficult to make a change?

Yes, you have to know what you want to change, and the more specific you can make it the better. For example, “I want to lose 10 lbs” is better than “I want to lose weight” but “I will lose 1 lb per week by eating smaller portions, drinking water with each meal and taking a 20 minute walk every day” is even better. But also consider why it is important to you that you achieve this goal. If you understand your reasons for wanting to achieve a health goal, and the real underlying reasons may not be the obvious ones, then you will be closer to maintaining your motivation. If you examine your ‘whys’ you may even find that you end up with different goals or different ways of fulfilling those aims. You will probably find that a worthwhile, achievable goal is one that is connected to your core values that give your life meaning. So perhaps “I want to lose weight so I can fit into nice clothes” is really “I want to be healthier so I have more active years with my children and grandchildren”. I know what would motivate me more.
