Treating Your Rose Bushes I thought this month I would give some advice about Pruning Roses. Cuts should be no more than 5mm (¼ in) above a bud and should slope away from it, so that water does not collect on the bud. This applies to all cuts, whether removing dead wood, deadheading or annual pruning. Cut to an outward-facing bud to encourage an open-centred shape. With roses of spreading habit prune some stems to inward-facing buds to encourage more upright growth. Cut to the appropriate height, if a dormant bud is not visible. Cuts must be clean, so keep your secateurs sharp. For larger stems, use loppers or a pruning saw. Prune dieback to healthy white pith. Cut out dead and diseased stems and spindly and crossing stems, aiming for well-spaced

Spend about £20 and get a good pair with a 10 year or even a ‘Lifetime’ guarantee, they will make pruning jobs so much easier. Garden Trail Canvey Island Town Council is organising its third annual charity Garden Trail on Saturday, 20th July from 10am to 6pm (most gardens) at 12 different garden locations across the island. This year the money raised will be donated to Canvey Community Archive. Programmes costing ÂŁ3.00 each for the Garden Trail are available for sale at the Town Council office, St Nicholas Church and the garden locations. Each programme is entry for one adult and children under 16 years. This year the Garden Trail is sponsored by Nisa Local, Jones Corner. Cllr Doreen Anderson, Chairman of Canvey Island Town Council commented: “We have a variety of gardens taking part. Everyone is invited to come along to visit the gardens. It’s an opportunity for people to get some ideas and advice for their own garden and help a great local cause.â€?
