Welcome to the March edition of the Essex Business and Leisure magazine. I know I always say this but I can not believe how quick this year is going. It truly does baffle me! Although I’m writing this in cold conditions I’m hoping for all you gardeners, March brightens up for you and you can all get back to the Garden you miss through the Winter. Hellebore leaf spot can be a problem on old foliage of hellebores. Cutting back the old leaves should control the problem.

Spring into your Garden this March Some tips on what you can do in this garden this month other than the general March tidy up!

Aphids can multiply rapidly during mild spells. Remove early infestations by hand to prevent the problem getting out of hand. Protect sweet pea plants in particular, as they can get sweet pea viruses, which are transmitted by aphids and other sap-sucking insects.

Watch out for downy mildew and black spot on winter pansies. Remove any infected leaves and destroy badly affected plants.

Turf can still be laid, provided the soil is not too wet or frozen. Work from planks, to avoid compacting the soil. Do not walk on newly laid turf, and leave it undisturbed for several weeks to allow the new roots to establish. Newly-turfed areas can be mown with the blades set to the highest setting, as soon as the grass reaches 5cm (2in) in height. Mow the established lawns if the weather is mild enough and the grass shows signs of growth. Ensure the first cut of the season is light, raising the blades 0.5cm (0.25in) higher than the usual cutting height.

Indeed, I’ve suffered from shin splints myself and have found that orthotics, and improved running technique plus a regular sports massage has kept the problem at bay.

Shin Splints

Stuart BSc(Hons) MSc(Chiro) DC Consultant Osteomyologist www.spinalcarecentre.co.uk Shin splints (or ‘medial and lateral tibial stress syndrome’ for those who like medical jargon) are very common in people who do vigorous exercise, particularly on hard surfaces. They can be incredibly painful but they are avoidable and they can be treated. If, in the middle of an exercise class or when running, you’ve experienced sudden shooting pains from the front of your ankle up to below your kneecap and it feels sore to touch either side of your shinbone, then you may have shin splints. If shin splints reoccur or persist it is important to see your GP for treatment. Over the years I’ve treated many patients with shin splints and a common theme is over rolling (pronation) of the foot when in motion. Over rolling of the foot causes weakness, muscle spasms and over stretching of the muscle in front of the shinbone. All of this contributes to the inflammation and pain in this muscle or ‘shin splints’. One successful way to treat shin splints is to wear custom made shoe inserts or orthotics in your everyday and your exercise shoes to stop you ‘over-rolling’ as you walk, run or exercise. Orthotics can improve your foot function,

As I initially mentioned, shin splints are avoidable if you take a few precautions. To reduce the impact of your exercise, choose to run, dance, aerobicise etc on surfaces that have give to them. Cement surfaces are particularly harsh so avoid these and choose surfaces such as grass, crushed gravel, tarmac or a dedicated running track. Running up or down hills can aggravate shin splints so to stick to flat surfaces. For exercise classes, a suspended wooden floor is ideal. Wearing properly cushioned exercise shoes will also help to avoid the misery of shin splints. When shopping for trainers, look for a good fit (with at least a thumb’s width room at the toe, and the heel held firmly), good cushioning (especially in the forefoot, for an aerobics shoe), and extra supportive material on the inside heeledge of the sole. Runners and walkers should replace their shoes approximately every 500 miles. Always warm up before exercising to get blood flowing to the tissues. Warm muscles are less likely than cold muscles to be injured. Warm up with a few minutes of easy walking or gentle stretching. If you do get shin splints, the most important message is that you should stop exercising. Continuing to exercise could cause minute stress fractures in your shinbone. Take it easy for a couple of days and seek the advice of your chiropractically trained health care provider or GP. Use an icepack or a pack of frozen peas wrapped in a towel to reduce the inflammation of the muscle. Be careful to only apply the ice for 20 minutes at a time and do not reapply until the skin has returned to its normal temperature. Listen to your body. When you exercise be conscious of how you are using your feet, focus on feeling how your muscles move. Pain and restricted movement in joints are warning signs that if ignored in the short term, you will regret at leisure later.

Lemon Coconut Loaf For the Cake 120g butter, 200g caster sugar, 2 eggs 2 tbsp lemon juice, 200g self-raising flour Pinch of salt,120ml milk, 2 tsp grated lemon peel 4 tbsp dessicated coconut For the Lemon Icing 3 tbsp icing sugar 2 or 3 tbsp lemon juice Optional dessicated coconut

Ingredients

Prep 15 min › Cook 60 min › Ready in 75 min

Preheat your oven to 180°C / Gas mark 4. Lightly grease a 900g loaf tin.

In a mixing bowl, cream butter, sugar and lemon juice. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

Sieve the flour and salt; add to creamed butter mixture alternately with the milk. Stir in the dessicated coconut and grated lemon.

Pour into the loaf tin and bake for 60-70 min or until a skewer comes out clean. Cool for 10 min in the tin, then remove from the tin onto a wire rack.

Stir the lemon juice into the icing sugar to make a slightly thick (but still runny) icing to and brush over the cake. Sprinkle more coconut over the top, if you like. Let it harden slightly before slicing.

Kayaking the Thames for the Danny Green Fund A Team of 15 friends including Danny’s dad will be supporting The Danny Green Fund by taking part in a Kayaking Event along The River Thames to raise much needed funds to support children who are suffering from brain tumours. This challenging event will be held over the weekend of 27th May 2016. The team will kayak for 12 hours a day, through 6 counties covering 151 miles down The River Thames over 4 days doing an average of 38 miles a day and camping over night on the bank of the River Thames. This will be a

real challenge for those taking part as they have no previous kayaking experience. The money raised will go towards supporting children who are suffering from disabilities as the result of a brain tumour. The Danny Green Fund are currently funding 53 therapy sessions a month at a cost of approximately £1,000 a month.

time to make this new habit just happen. 2. Get some comfortable workout gear You don’t need to go out and spend loads of money, but you do want to be comfortable. So make sure you have the gear to workout out it. Then every evening before you go to bed, put that workout gear out so it is super easy to put on first thing in the morning. That way you are half way there. 3. Get some great music Now that you have got your workout gear on, and you are up into your day. Turn up some great music to get you into the mood. Trigger the brain that its time to exercise. Then get into it!

Even just 5 minutes, is better than no exercise! We all wish we could run a marathon but even a 10 minute walk is a wonderful daily habit! You know that you want to start exercising but you just can’t seem to master up the strength to go from couch to working out or you hate exercising, even just the thought of it and you just keep putting it off. Here are some simple tips on how to start an exercise habit when you are really unfit to help you add exercise into your day and into your life. 1. Start Simple Just commit to a really simple routine, it could be a LITE workout in the online gym, some stretching or yoga. Or even just a walk to the shops. Don’t over think it. Think of bringing activity into your day and more movement. Then make that happen each and every day. There will be days when you do more and days when you only do 5 minutes. The key is to just do it. Make the

Then block out that time, make the workout happen at the time you have allocated. No excuses. Knowing that you are just doing 5 minutes means you cannot use no time as an excuse. 5. These little things are milestones and moments that are going to keep you going. Take a photo, use it as a tool to inspire you, take your waist measurements. There is nothing like facts to keep you on track. Be measurable and be accountable. Maybe even put it on facebook! 7. Met a friend for a walk at least once every 2 weeks There is nothing like accountability, met a friend for a walk, or to workout. Make appointments with people and instead of catching up over coffee, catch up for a walk instead.
