Hi there, Welcome to our March edition Thanks for reading yet another edition of the Essex Business and Leisure Local Magazines. SPRING / SUMMER 2019 TREND REPORT PART 1 Women are having a moment. This month we come together to mark International Women’s Day on the 8th March. This event is about tackling issues such as inequality, sexism and the gender pay gap and celebrating how far we have come, but equally the work still left to do. For me it’s about having a choice, not being dictated to by social pressures. We can “have it all” or choose not to… This freedom to live our own best life is mirrored in the new season fashion, which is both diverse and expressive. The catwalks seem to be putting two fingers up at the grim nature of current affairs and the international political climate and offering us a release. It is so important for us to be able to stand tall in clothes that make us feel confident and empowered. Nature is teasing us with new life – tiny green shots appear just above the soil and the sun gradually gives us more and more daytime. Homemade Pancakes 100g plain flour, 2 large eggs, 300ml milk 1 tbsp sunflower or vegetable oil, plus a little extra for frying lemon wedges, to serve (optional), caster sugar, to serve (optional) or maybe try nutella, jam or something savoury?
Method 1

Prep 10 mins › Cook 20 mins › 12 Pancakes
Put 100g plain flour, 2 large eggs, 300ml milk, 1 tbsp sunflower or vegetable oil and a pinch of salt into a bowl or large jug, then whisk to a smooth batter. Set aside for 30 mins to rest if you have time, or start cooking straight away. Set a medium frying pan or crêpe pan over a medium heat and carefully wipe it with some oiled kitchen paper.

When hot, cook your pancakes for 1 min on each side until golden, keeping them warm in a low oven as you go. Serve with lemon wedges and caster sugar, or your favourite filling. Once cold, you can layer the pancakes between baking parchment, then wrap in cling film and freeze for up to 2 months.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG Spring usually arrives by mid-March and the frequent sunny days provide the opportunity for an increasing range of gardening tasks. It’s time to get busy preparing seed beds, sowing seed, cutting back winter shrubs and generally tidying up around the garden. Here’s a list of the top 10 jobs to do this March. 1 Protect new spring shoots from slugs 2 Plant shallots, onion sets and early potatoes 3 Plant summer-flowering bulbs 4 Lift & divide overgrown clumps of perennials 5 Top dress containers with fresh compost 6 Mow the lawn on dry days (if needed) 7 Cut back Cornus (dogwood) and Salix (willow) grown for colourful winter stems 8 Hoe and mulch weeds to keep them under control early 9 Start feeding fish and using the pond fountain; remove pond heaters 10 Prune bush and climbing roses Lets have a closer look at number 4, dividing overgrown and clumping perennials. Plants can be divided successfully at almost any time if they are kept well-watered afterwards. However, division is most successful when the plants are not in active growth. Divide summer-flowering plants in spring (Mar-May). Spring is also better suited to plants that are a touch tender.

RUN A MILE IN 4 WEEKS This four-week training program is designed for total beginner run/walkers who want to build up to running a mile. This program is a run/walk to continuous running program. Each week, you’ll make a slight increase to your running distance and a decrease in your walking distance. By the end of four weeks, you’ll be able to run one mile without stopping.
