Tackling crime and antisocial behaviour at Festival Leisure Park has seen Pc Alex Plakhtienko named Police Officer of the Year at a recent awards ceremony. Neighbourhood Pc Plakhtienko has worked tirelessly to improve safety and security across the Basildon area, with a particular focus on the clubs and bars at the popular leisure park. “I started looking into the night time economy about eight years ago,” explains Plakhtienko. “There were a lot of issues on Festival Leisure around binge drinking and gang and drink related violence. We are in a far better position now though.

In last month’s article we gave you 5 steps to starting a garden at home, and as promised we have 5 more steps helping you to get your garden off to a flying start. 1. Pick your plants. Some people pore over catalogs for months; some people head to the garden center and buy what wows them. Either method works if you choose plants adapted to your climate, your soil, and the amount of sunlight in your garden. You can even surf the Internet for plants to purchase. Here are a few easy-to-grow plants for beginners. Annual: cosmos, marigolds, impatiens, geraniums, Calendula, sunflowers, and zinnias. Perennials: Russian sage, lamb’s-ears, black-eyed Susans, purple coneflowers, phlox, pansies, and daylilies. Vegetables: lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers. 2. Put them in the ground. Some plants, such as pansies and kale, tolerate cold, so you can plant them in autumn or late winter. Tomatoes and most annual flowers, on the other hand, are touchy about cold, so don’t plant them until the danger of frost has passed in your area. Midspring and midautumn are good times to plant perennial flowers. Check the county cooperative extension office or local garden center for a list of recommended planting dates. Some plants, such as lettuce and sunflowers, are easy to grow from seed. You can sow them directly in the garden. Be sure to read the seed packet for information about when to plant, how deep to plant, and how far apart to plant the seeds. If you’re an adventurous beginner, you can get a head start on the growing season by sowing seeds indoors before the last frost date. You can buy containers or flats designed especially for seedlings, as well as seedstarting soil mixes (available at garden centers). Follow seed-packet instructions, and place the containers on a sunny windowsill or under artificial lights if you don’t

Neither do I get stiff muscles, twinges or pins and needles in the car. Can you say the same? I’m not claiming to be the best driver in the world but I know how to drive without taxing my spine or my muscles. The secret to pain free driving is to set up your car seat correctly, develop a good driving posture and take regular breaks where you get out of the vehicle and stretch. It sounds simple but it’s also easy to make mistakes that could set you up for back and neck trouble so I’ve collated for you some of the best advice and practices on pain free driving.

Setting up your seat

First of all you need to set up the seat from scratch. Take the seat back to its default settings (seat at its lowest, the cushion tilted with the front edge as low as possible, the back rest about

Next consider the tilt of the seat cushion. Your knees should be the same height or slightly higher than your hips but you shouldn’t feel any pressure behind the knee. Adjust the lumbar support so that it fits snugly against your lower back and prevents your from forming a C shape. Place your hands together as if praying and then point them towards the steering wheel. You should be pointing at the exact centre of the wheel to avoid twisting your spine. Place your hands on the wheel in the ‘ten to two’ position: your elbows should be in a comfortable and relaxed position. Adjust the steering column as necessary. Although a chiropractic adjustment is very effective at treating the pain of whiplash injuries, it’s far better to minimise the risk by positioning your headrest correctly. Most people have them far too low down to protect you head and neck in an accident. The top of the head rest should be at least level with your eyes. Adjust your mirrors. Do you have good visibility of the road without excessively turning your upper body and head? You’ll probably find that you’ll need to fine tune the settings. If your car has a seat position memory function then use it to save your individual driving position.

Developing a good posture

Your driving posture should be alert but relaxed. Your shoulders, hips and knees should be aligned. Your ears should be vertically above your shoulders and your head should not be jutting forwards. Also consider your posture when exiting the car: place your thighs and feet together and swivel round until both feet are outside the car. Use your arms to help lift yourself up from this position. Take a break Sitting places a great deal of pressure on the spine and the vibration of the vehicle can increase the speed of fluid loss from the spongy discs in your spine. On long journeys schedule a 15 minute stop every two hours and once stopped actually get out of the car! Go for a brisk walk, rotate your shoulders and ankles and breathe deeply to revitalise your muscles. Even try a few gentle hamstring stretches. If you are stuck in traffic jam you could try a few exercises such as clenching your buttocks, shoulder shrugs, flexing your toes and clenching your calf and thigh muscles.

Rhubarb Streusel Muffins

Ingredients

310g plain flour, 1 teasp. bicarbonate of soda, 1 teasp. baking powder,1/2 teasp. salt,175g dark brown soft sugar, 125ml vegetable oil, 1 egg, 1 teasp vanilla extract, 225g buttermilk, 185g diced rhubarb, 60g chopped walnuts, 1 tbsp melted butter, 5 tbsp caster sugar, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Grease two 12-hole muffin tins or line with paper cases. In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, bicarbonate of soda, baking powder and salt. In a separate bowl, beat the dark brown soft sugar, oil, egg, vanilla and buttermilk with an electric mixer until smooth. Pour in the dry ingredients and mix by hand just until blended. Stir in the rhubarb and walnuts. Spoon the batter into the prepared muffin tins, filling almost to the top. In a small bowl, stir together the melted butter, caster sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle about 1 teaspoon of this mixture on top of each muffin. Bake in the preheated oven until the tops of the muffins spring back when lightly pressed, about 25 minutes. Cool in the tins for at least 10 minutes before removing.

We cannot emphasize enough that these mailshots for lotteries, today-only offers, vouchers, a promise of a holiday etc etc are scams. Victims, most often the elderly, are sucked in because they are lonely. It becomes a habit, obsession or addiction and it keeps them busy. Victims try to hide their post from family and friends. Of the people on the list that officers have visited so far, the majority have denied that these mailings are scams. One of them even asked Trading Standards not to take away his hope, even though he admitted he had never won a single prize. One person visited by officers had received 311 letters from 15 different countries in two months.
