Hi there, Welcome to our October edition I hope you are all well, and not missing Summer too much. Me personally, I love Winter and I’m glad its on its way. As always we have so much to look forward to, especially the fast approaching Halloween and Bonfire Night! I hope you and your family and friends have an amazing time trick or treating, or watching the fireworks but please just make sure you keep yourself safe and always be vigilant. We are trying something new this month, called the Headscratchers of the Month, this month we have four riddles ranging from easy to not so easy, so I hope they don’t trouble you too much. be sure to let us know what you think and we’ll step up the difficulty next month. Our gardening article this month is about the jobs to do in October, as all you keen gardeners know you can’t truly put your tools away for any lengthy part of the year, so be sure to get to work on these little tasks! The charity article this month has been donated to the Canine Partners for their assistance dogs it’s an amazing charity

For a twist on the original, hang doughnuts from string and have the kids eat them with no hands. They’ll love the goodies they’re fishing for, and will probably get a good giggle as well. PLAY PHOTO BOOTH Make use of your little ones’ cute costumes, and capture the Halloween memory. “Let kids live it up in costume with a few simple props. Arrange pumpkins, maybe some bats, or a moon and stars on the wall behind them. Take individual shots—family shots or kids together. Maybe even provide some extra, simple costume itevms, like funny glasses or hats for kids who really want to amp it up.

Prep 5 min › Cook 20 min › Ready in 25 mins

Grease a piece of baking paper and place on a tray/baking sheet.

Insert bamboo skewers in all the apples and set aside.

In a medium pot, combine the sugar, water, glucose/corn syrup and food colouring and stir over medium heat until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture feels smooth when you rub it between your fingers.

When the sugar has dissolved, turn the heat up and wash the sides of the pot down with a pastry brush dipped into clean water to prevent crystals from forming.

Allow the caramel to boil until it reaches the hard crack stage (150°c/310°F).

Carefully dip the apples into the hot candy mixture and place on the baking paper to set and cool for approximately an hour before serving.

LOCAL CHARITY NOW SUPPORTING 15 CHILDREN ACROSS THE UK The Danny Green Fund have had a busy year so far and are currently supporting an average of 15 children from around the UK to access physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, speech therapy, swimming therapy and horse riding therapy every week. In recent weeks one of the children we are supporting has taken part in a physiotherapy session using “robot legs” which is a relatively new technique to help his balance and core strength. MUST DO JOBS IN OCTOBER Don’t put away the gardening gloves just yet Tidy borders - Keep on weeding and have a gentle tidy up in your borders but do try to resist the temptation of a thorough spring clean. Leave seedheads for the birds if you don’t want to collect them and as much cover as you can bear for wildlife who will appreciate the winter shelter. Fallen leaves can be left to rot down (or collected for leaf mould), however diseased material is another matter; make it a priority to clear and burn it to prevent pests and diseases overwintering courtesy of your kind hospitality! Put the rest of your garden rubbish (apart from woody stems) in the compost. Start your compost - If you haven’t already done so, start your compost going by buying a bin or building a partially enclosed area for a heap. It is vital to replace the goodness in soil after a hefty growing season and autumn produces masses of garden waste that will put invaluable organic richness back into the ground for next spring. Add a variety of different materials; spent vegetable and bedding plants, herbaceous leftovers, thatch, moss and cuttings from the lawn, weeds (but not the roots unless they have been through a shredder), hedge clippings, kitchen peelings and tea bags are ideal. Turn once a week or so if you can and NEVER add diseased or pest-ridden material (such as diseased rose petals - heinous culprits) to your compost - it is a warm and welcoming nirvana for unwelcome guests who will reappear with a vengeance next year! Onto the bonfire with them without a qualm... Clean out the greenhouse - It really is worth cleaning out your greenhouse thoroughly now your greenhouse crops are over; it will prevent pests from hibernating and leaping into action next spring! Wash the windows inside and out to allow maximum light in over the winter and scrub all benches, fixtures and glazing bars with disinfectant, making sure you hose the whole place down really well, especially dark and dusty corners. For effective fumigation, move all plants outside, shut the windows, light a sulphur candle in the middle of the floor, (retreat at speed!), shut the door and wait until the smoke and fumes have completely dispersed several hours later. Your greenhouse should now be pest free!

BACK PAIN & PREGNANCY Stuart BSc(Hons) MSc(Chiro) DC Consultant Osteomyologist - www.spinalcarecentre.co.uk More years ago than I care to remember, I wrote my final year thesis on back pain in pregnant women. As well as meeting some delightful people, this study opened my eyes to the amazing changes that the human body copes with during pregnancy. Unfortunately, some of those changes involve a great deal of stress upon the spine, making low back pain a common feature of pregnancy. During pregnancy, a woman’s centre of gravity almost immediately begins to shift forward to the front of her pelvis. This displaced weight increases the stress on your joints. As the baby grows in size, her weight is projected even further forward, and the curvature of the woman’s lower back is increased, placing extra stress on the spinal discs. In compensation, the normal curve of her upper spine increases as well. While these changes sound dramatic, pregnancy hormones help loosen the ligaments attached to the pelvic bones. But even these natural changes designed to accommodate the growing baby can result in postural imbalances, making pregnant women more prone to awkward trips and falls. Each year chiropractically trained health care practitioners help many mums to be by relieving the aches and pains caused by the changes in the body during pregnancy. Chiropractic adjustments are safe for pregnant women and their babies and can be especially attractive if you are trying to avoid taking pills to treat the pain. At our clinic, we offer advice on how to lift and carry, how to improve your posture and how to exercise to improve your spinal health. All our Spinal health care practitioners train for a minimum of five years before qualifying The main chiropractic technique is to gently adjust, using our hands, the parts of the spine and joints which are not moving properly. The health care practitoners will use modified techniques to ensure your comfort and safety whilst you

are pregnant. These techniques can be used safely in the later stages of pregnancy and even during labour. One of our clients and mum of two had chiropractic adjustments throughout both her pregnancies in our clinic: “My practitioner was great and I had less back ache during the pregnancy and a hassle-free natural birth. I would definitely recommend it.” Of note her entire family including both her children regularly undergo Chiropractic adjustments in the clinic. In fact, chiropractic care during pregnancy has been shown to significantly reduce the length of the labour. First time mums averaged a 24 per cent shorter labour, while mothers who had already given birth experienced a 39 per cent reduction in the average labour length, compared to those not having chiropractic care (Fallon, 1991). A practitioner trained in Chiropractic aims to make the pregnancy more comfortable and healthy using natural techniques: chiropractic is a drug-free discipline. A US study showed that women who received chiropractic adjustments in their third trimester of pregnancy were able to carry and deliver children with more comfort (Hendryson, 1987). A further US study, showed that chiropractic care reduced the need for pain killers by 50 per cent. Chiropractic care can also help after childbirth. In the eight weeks following labour and delivery, the ligaments that loosened during pregnancy begin to tighten up again. Ideally, joint problems brought on during pregnancy from improper lifting or reaching should be treated before the ligaments return to their pre-pregnancy state to prevent muscle tension, headaches, rib discomfort, and shoulder problems.
