Hi there, Welcome to our October edition It’s October everyone! After an amazing Summer we can all start looking forward to some cooler weather and all the festivities that come with it Halloween, Bonfire Night and many birthdays. Of course I won’t mention the ‘C’ word yet. Our movie preview this month will please many Marvel fans as the long awaited Anti Hero film Venom is finally due to be released for a brief summary of the film check out this month’s movie preview. The fabric we adorn our bodies with has a duty particularly in winter to keep as warm and protected. Just as important is its function to make us feel confident and polished. Before you make your selection for the season, mixing old favourites with new, exciting garments, let me give you Dress Doctor’s rundown of the trends to be seen in NOW: Heritage Prints This expression of being British seems to appear every autumn, like the re-emergence of an old friend. Designers appreciate how convertible and somehow comforting this look is. Prince Charles checks and hounds tooth prints are firmly imbedded in our history and adorn our autumn wardrobe to perfection. My favourite way to wear the pattern is on a tailored blazer or splashed all over a butter soft knit that you never want to remove. The Statement Coat The winter coat is arguably the most important purchase you’ll make this year. This item of clothing will be the finishing touch to many an ensemble, so make sure you choose wisely. Seasonal Pumpkin Muffins 60ml vegetable oil, plus extra for greasing, 180g self-raising flour 130g wholemeal flour, 1 tsp baking powder, ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda pinch salt, 3 fresh rosemary sprigs, finely chopped, 2 eggs, lightly beaten 240g cooked pumpkin, cut into ½cm/¼in cubes, handful pumpkin seeds 100ml plain yoghurt, 275ml milk, 1 tbsp honey
Method
Prep 30 min › Cook 10-30 mins › Serves 12 People

Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Oil a 12-hole muffin tin and line with 12 squares of baking paper. Push the squares down into each hole so that the paper sticks up.

Sift the flours, baking powder, and bicarbonate of soda into a large bowl. Stir in the salt and rosemary. (Reserve any wholegrain left in the sieve.)

Meanwhile in another bowl, mix the eggs, yoghurt, milk, honey and vegetable oil until well combined.

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and fold the ingredients together, but be careful not to over-work the mixture. Stir in most of the pumpkin, reserving a little for the top of the muffins. Spoon the mixture into the muffin cases.

Sprinkle the reserved wholegrain, pumpkin and the pumpkin seeds over the muffins. Bake in the centre of the oven for 20–25 minutes, or until the muffins are well risen and a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean.

MAKING THE PERFECT LEAF MOULD Leaves are one thing we are not short of this time of year, instead of throwing or burning them why not make some leaf mould this year, it makes a great mulch for your borders and beds. Here how... Step 1 Collect the leaves Small quantities of leaves are best gathered by hand using a rake; however, if you have a large quantity of leaves, they can be collected with a special leaf blower vacuum, which shreds the material into smaller pieces helping to speed up the decaying process. Step 2 Add moisture If the leaves are dry, moisten them with a little water. Step 3 Bag it up Bag up the leaves in a large bin bag and punch holes in it to allow the air to circulate. Place in a secluded area of the garden. BRAIN EXERCISES Worried about holding on to your mental dexterity and memory as you age? Think sudoko, cleverly-marketed computer games and ‘brain exercises’ are the answer? Think again, regular exercise, such as a brisk walk three times a week, is the key to keeping, even growing, your cognitive powers as you age. Despite what the advertisers would like you to believe, there is scant evidence that directly links computer or paper brain exercises with an overall improvement in mental faculties. Instead, these games tend to produce an improvement in the specific task the game trains you in. So whilst these brain games and puzzles are fun and can improve specific skills, there are not a quick fix for mental decline associated with the aging process. A different sort of training, physical exercise, however, has been show to maintain and improve your part of the brain that controls your ‘higher level’ thinking. Numerous animal and human studies have shown that regular exercise improves what is called our ‘executive functioning’. This allows us to choose appropriate behaviour, inhibit inappropriate behaviour and concentrate in the face of distractions. Executive function also influences basic cognitive functions such as processing speed, response speed and working memory. Executive function starts to decline when people reach their 70s. But elderly people who have been athletic all their lives have much better executive function than sedentary people of the same age. Studies have indicated that when inactive people get more exercise, even starting in their 70s, their executive function improves. So do you need to start training for the Olympics in order to remember your shopping list? No! Even just a regular programme of fast walking for 30 to 60 minutes three or more times a week will make a difference to your brain functioning. Plus
you get the added benefits of improvements to your muscle tone, circulation and general health! A big worry for us all as we age is the risk of dementia but again, we should consider an active life as part of our protection against mental decline. We’re not really sure exactly how exercise helps brain function: theories being investigated are the increased production of the feelgood hormone serotonin and improved blood circulation to the brain. So put down that pencil, don’t bother investing in expensive computer games (which encourage you do spend more time on the sofa) and pull on some trainers. If it’s a while since you exercised regularly or you have some problems with backache, foot or knee pain then I’d recommend seeing your local chiropractically trained practitioner before you begin a new exercise programme.

LACEMENT At last year’s event, 33% of the blankets & THERMOSTATS checked were found to be faulty and CERTIFICATION destroyed for safety reasons. Many failures

Other reasons included broken power cables, insulation bonding and no overheat 70 problems, protection. Other owners were informed 74 about product safety recalls for their model of blanket that they had not previously been aware of, and they were advised to return the goods for a replacement.
