by Sylene Argent At around 9 a.m. on August 22, staff and volunteers at the Kingsville Historical Park Museum noticed someone, or a few individuals, had attempted to break and enter into an outdoor building used to build displays and store office supplies for the Cadet Core the night before, Kevin Fox, Curator of the Kingsville Historical Park Museum, said. Fox said there was no sign the party gained entry into that

building, but it appeared a steal bar was used to create several impacts. He believes the party was stopped mid-break in attempt, possibly when a neighbour turned on a light. He said neighbours did not hear anything. Volunteers, he said, are looking at how to improve security. “We want to reassure the public and those who donated, everything is safe and secure,” Fox said, adding the Museum will

not stand by and be idol in the wake of this occurrence. He said there is an on-going investigation. He hopes anyone with any information would contact the OPP. “Our spirits are not broken,” Fox said of the volunteers, many of whom have been dedicated to the museum for over twenty years. “The volunteers have been here through thick and thin. They will stand by us.” The recent attempted break

and enter did remind those associated with the Museum of the devastating 1996 break in that caused much more damage and broke the heart of one of the founders, Charlie Campbell. Two weeks after the 1996 break in, Campbell passed away. He was a Tail Gunner with the RCAF during WW2. His father opened a Museum at Niagara Falls, so Fox believes that is why opening the Kingsville Museum was so important to Campbell. “A robbery can have a great affect,” he said. Despite the heavy feeling of sadness that comes with such an occurrence, the Museum volunteers are focusing on the positive, and so are members of the community as Fox said a few donations have been forwarded to help the museum repair the damage. Volunteers with the Museum and Fox, an employee, are also looking forward to September when the 30th anniversary of the Museum will be celebrated. “Even though this dark spot existed, we are looking forward to that celebration.” He urges community members to keep checking the Museum’s Facebook page for more information. Volunteers are always welcome at the Museum, he added. “The community built this Museum and it’s the community that will carry it into the next 30 years,” he said.

Annual art festival hosted in Amherstburg by Adam Gault What began as a centennial project back in 1967, with a small handful of artists, has grown nearly tenfold as was evident at this year’s “Art by The River” festival, which took over Fort Malden in Amherstburg this past weekend.

Carolyn Hardy poses with some of her surrealist works at the annual Art by The River festival in Amherstburg.

More than 10,000 guests from across Canada visited the annual festival that showcases and sells the original works of many local painters, photographers, musicians, and other artistic crafters. Bonnie Deslippe, the Exhibit and Public Chairperson for the Gibson Gallery, explained the festival is an exceptional way to promote artistic development for all members of the public, as well as a key fundraising endeavour for the nearby Gibson Gallery. “Without this event, the (Gibson) Gallery would have to charge. get to introduce people to art,” Deslippe explained regarding the important nature of “Art by the River” when it comes to keeping local artistic initiatives available to all. Organizers have always strived to have the event be a family-friendly affair, with an alcoholfree environment and artistic activities designed to engage and encourage artistic development in young adults and children of all ages. This year’s event featured the return of the live art competition. Young adults and students from university and local high schools competed head-to-head over the course of the weekend in creating original works of art. The winner of the contest received a $400 cash prize. Deslippe added the

unique location of the festival is another key component in what helps it grow year after year. “I used to come with my kids every year just to see the fort,” Deslippe said, noting the event has been and will continue to be a wonderful way to promote the local beauty and scenery of Essex County to guests who travel from as far away as Vancouver, BC. “We always encourage guests to visit one of the many local restaurants for lunch while they’re in town,” Deslippe said, explaining the financial success of the event extends to many of the local businesses within the tourism industry. Windsor Symphony Orchestra performs in Colchester

by Adam Gault The Windsor Symphony Orchestra’s (WSO) woodwind quartet made local history on Saturday evening when its members performed in Colchester for the first time as part of their annual summer concert series. After five previous summer concerts throughout Windsor and Essex County, Colchester Harbour Park took centre stage under the setting sun for a free concert that included a wide-range of genres and composers. From Mozart to Elton John, the WSO’s woodwind quartet showcased a small sample of what it has planned as it begins to embark upon its 70th season. Giancarlo Mincone, Manager of Marketing, Sales, and Patron Relations for the Windsor Symphony Orchestra, explained the summer concert series is a fantastic way to expose people to the classical genre and to perform for those

who would otherwise be unable to attend a concert. “We want to engage everyone in Essex,” Mincone said. “This is a great opportunity to bring concerts out to the county.” The WSO’s season kicks off September 23 at the Capitol Theatre in Windsor with “Ode to Canada,” as part of “Canada 150 Signature Projects,” Concerts designated with the “Canada 150 Signature Projects” label are part of a project between partnered Canadian orchestras to celebrate Canada’s musical past and present, while helping to ensure Canada’s next generation of musical performers have an opportunity to perform and prosper. The 2017-18 season will also feature “The Masterworks” series. This 3-concert series will feature an expanded orchestra, along with a staged version of Mozart’s “Marriage of Figaro” and a performance from renowned pianist, Alain

Lefevre. The WSO is the only symphony orchestra between Windsor and London and is an integral part of the Windsor-Essex cultural community. As part of that

commitment to the local community, for every concert performed as part of the 2017-18 season, the WSO will give 2 performances in schools, community centres, nursing homes, and retirement communities. For upcoming concert and ticket information, visit windsorsymphony. com.

It seems we are often asked to make donations every time we turn around. I don’t always mind doing so, especially when they are worthy causes to support. I used my birthday over the weekend as an excuse to head down to the Humane Society to make a donation on my own accord. This was the second year in a row I have done so. I figured, if I get to celebrate life with my friends and family, why shouldn’t I make a contribution to help fur-critters find their own families. That is something I am certainly passionate about. I wish I could contribute more. I get the greatest feeling in the world when I am driving away after making a donation to that cause. I also hope my support helps those

critters in bad situations get into a better circumstance; one that will provide them not only the essentials to live, but love, compassion, and understanding. I love reading the success stories online, when the Humane Society or another agency links an animal to a home. Those stories make me smile every time, no matter what kind of mood I am in when I see it. It is so precious and the most beautiful thing to me. No one is a perfect pet owner. We all make mistakes. And hopefully, we learn from them. They say a lot can be judged about a person based on how they treat animals, and I believe that is true. Even if someone is not a fan of animals or a certain species, they can still show respect.

I only wish everyone felt the same way, but unfortunately not everyone does. I have been so lucky to have had a lot of fur-critters in my life, and I am proud to have had each of them; they all taught me something different about myself. Their love is unconditional. We can all learn a little about that from them, that’s for sure. Some of those animals I had lived longer than others, but no matter how short their stay, the impact they left behind was always great.

Opinion... Proposed changes to federal taxation bad news for farm corporations by Mark Wales, Director, Ontario Federation of Agriculture The federal Department of Finance released a consultation paper and draft legislation on July 18 aimed at significantly overhauling the private corporation tax system in Canada. Proposed changes to taxation of private corporations, as they are currently worded, are bad news for the estimated 25% of farm businesses across Ontario and Canada that are incorporated. The proposed changes, slated to go into effect on January 1, 2018 will increase uncertainty and complexity to any farm businesses that has decided to incorporate, and result in increased accounting fees for incorporated farmers to comply with the changes.

The federal government has opened up consultation on the changes until October 2. The Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) has several concerns about the changes and the process, and is working together with the Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) and other stakeholder groups across all industries to change the direction of the proposal. OFA’s concerns focus on three things – the need to extend the consultation period, the need to rethink some of the proposals in the changes, and the need to engage in meaningful consultation with farm businesses across Canada to fully understand the impact the changes may have on family owned and operated businesses in Canada. As part of the changes, any farmer who has incorporated their business would need to review their succession and

Let’s Talk About... by Evelyn Couch Progress in Essex Maplewood Public School was built at Brien Avenue East and opened in November of 1989. Six rooms were added to the high school in 1955. Margaret Brown was the first female Councillor. The greatest advance for recreation was the Memorial Arena. To avoid debt, the work was done in stages, starting with an open-air ice pad in 1957. In 1961, it was re-opened with a memorial plaque and honour roll of service men who died in World War II. The first aluminum ladder made in Canada was made by Ernest King in 1970. Garbage was collected in an open truck and dumped just outside of town. Essex got its own car wash service, which users paid 25 cents to use. What had been considered the finest commercial building was torn down and it had been the Town hall. The office of Ontario Hydro was built on Irwin Avenue to serve the county, as well as two service stations, two

lumber companies, and the Canadian Bank of Commerce. The new Town Hall was built in 1967. The memorial band shell to Charles Maedel was destroyed. Our beautiful, old Post Office was destroyed by government order. Two neighbouring houses were torn down to provide a parking lot. The local theatre was closed when television entered most homes. The 19 acre race track at the fairgrounds was shut down and the area was used for recreation. The first nursery school was opened in Essex United Church by Beulah Tully. Additions were put on the local high school and Little’s nursing home in 1969. Two sewage lagoons were established. The first Ontario championship was brought to Essex by the Stokely Pee Wee baseball team. The Town’s outdoor swimming pool was built in 1967 as a Centennial project. That is enough for now. To be continued next week.

Family research conducted at ECHRS

submitted to EFP At the Essex & Community Historical Research Society (ECHRS), members have been getting a lot of DNA tests completed. Last

week, Christine Rawlins, ECHRS Secretary, received an email from an individual, Patricia Wilkinson, noting they are third cousins. Patricia was adopted and

was looking for family members.

Some research was conducted before the two cousins arranged to meet at ECHRS last Tuesday. Beverly Haggins, who has family tree information, also attended. With no luck finding proof of the family relationship, researched turned to an internet search. Within a half-of-anhour, a photo of Patricia’s mother was found and proof that Christine and Beverly are indeed her cousins. Two of Patricia’s sisters, in an another Province, were also located during the search along with many first cousins. The family research and results made for a very happy day for many.

tax plan with an advisor to ensure they make sense under the proposed changes. The tax implications of not being in compliance with the new rules could be severe. The changes would also penalize farmers who choose to transfer their incorporated farm business to the next generation. It is completely unacceptable that legislative changes would make it easier and lower the tax bill for a farmer to sell their farm business share to a stranger, rather than their own child or grandchild. OFA is encouraging all members to contact their local MP and let them know that the proposed changes, as currently worded, will be devastating to Ontario farm families and their farm operations and must be changed. The full consultation paper and draft legislation are posted at ofa.on.ca.

Essex High looks back with reunion Pictured left: (Front row, from left) Gaye McCracken, Bev Whaling, (Back row) Muriel Gerard, Mary Ellen Talbot, and Joanne Garon look over the 1971 Argus at Saturday night’s EDHS reunion.

by Fred Groves In 1971, George Alles, then Principal of Essex District High School (EDHS), wrote the following message in the school’s yearbook, “To all of those who will leave Essex this year, our best wishes for continual success. Please regard Essex High as ‘home’ and come back and see us whenever the opportunity arises.’ This past Saturday night, many former students gathered at a reunion at the Essex Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion

(Branch 201) for students who attended EDHS from 1969 to 1972. It was originally perceived that there would be low attendance at the event, but by 8 p.m., just an hour into the open house format get-together, there were over 75 people talking about old times and remembering their high school days. “I retired from Union Gas in Chatham four years ago and this was on my bucket list to do,” Bev Whaling said as to why she organized the reunion. One reason that Saturday night’s reunion was so successful is that many people have not moved far away from town and those who put the night together were able to spread the word. “I give credit to the committee girls who

live in town, they know everyone,” Whaling said. Mary Ellen Talbot (Bryden) and Joanne Rounding (Garon) went to school together and had lots of stories to recall from their younger days. Talbot was in the choir and Rounding was more athletic. “Joanne teased me because I got better marks in gym because I smiled more,” Talbot said. Talbot grew up on Medora Avenue and went to Holy Name elementary school before attending EDHS. She also helped plan the reunion. “I didn’t have any great expectations, but I am pleasantly surprised.” Several yearbooks from 1969 to 1972 were available to look through on Saturday night and there were finger points and chuckles at how much everyone has either changed or stayed the same. Student Council. In his Argus message, he thanked administration, which besides Mr. Alles, included viceprincipals Mr. Chisholm and Mr. Pype, for slackening the dress code. Simpkins penned, “For allowing us our human right to groom our bodies the way we see fit.” Apparently, and many of those at the reunion attested to, the administration prior to 1971 was a little on the stringent side. That year, the EDHS Red Raiders football team won its fourth consecutive Essex County title with a 3-0 win over General Amherst before coming up short to Chatham-Kent in the SWOSSA final. And what was playing on the radio in 1971? Well for Mary Ellen Talbot, it was Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘Bridge over Troubled Waters.’ “They are meaningful words,” she said. From 1971 to 2017 it seems as though that bridge is still connecting students to the familiar post-secondary education building on Talbot Street.

McGuire family hosts 5th Annual Vintage Bicycle Open House by Adam Gault What started with one bicycle more than 18 years ago has turned into a lifelong passion for one local couple. The 5th Annual Vintage Bicycle Open House was held this past Sunday on the rural Amherstburg property of event hosts Mark and Cori McGuire. Event guests came from across Ontario looking to buy, sell, and trade vintage bicycles. “I just wanted a decoration for the wall,” Mark said, explaining the genesis of his passion as

he pointed to a turn of the 20th century bicycle displayed alongside roughly a dozen other vintage bicycles. From that one bike, the collection grew to include many more, spanning every era of the 20th century and notable classic North American bicycle manufactures such as CCM and Schwinn. “The history of CCM follows the history of Canada to a ‘T,’” Mark said. 163rd Annual Harrow Fair Entertainment Thursday, August 31st at 8:00pm Genvieve Fisher Performing since the age of 2, London born and raised Genevieve Fisher has earned the respect and affection of both Country fans and the industry at large. Nationally, Genevieve has been recognized by the Canadian Country Music Association with her prestigious CCMA performance selection at the 2012 New Artist Showcase in Saskatoon. In 2016, they selected her to perform at the prestigious Songwriters Series at the CCMA’s held in her hometown. Genevieve proceeded to earn Female Artist of the Year nominations at the 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017 Country Music Association of Ontario Music Awards. A strong working music relationship was forged in late 2016 between Genevieve and Nashville hit producer Jason Massey. With 4 top 50 songs already to her credit, Genevieve entered 2017 with renewed energy and vitality. Their collaboration produced the January 2017 release “Take It On Home” which became an instant hit and climbed into Canada’s top 20 at Country radio.

Friday, September 1st at 8:00 pm The Abrams It’s hard for John and James Abrams to recall a time in their young lives where they weren’t creating and playing music together. As fourth generation musicians,

The Abrams have taken the “family business” to a whole new level with their recent signing to Warner Music Canada and major label self-titled debut EP. The Abrams is a departure from their earlier work, spurred by Gavin Brown – the Juno award-winning and Grammy nominated producer. Brown (Billy Talent, Metric, Three Days Grace) took it as a personal challenge to bring out the best in The Abrams and introduce them to a broader audience. The resulting EP does indeed make an indelible first impression, yet is only a taste of what The Abrams and Brown have created together Barely into their teens, the brothers made their mark at many high profile U.S. bluegrass festivals, and in 2005 they became the youngest Canadians to perform at the Grand Ole Opry. In 2008, they made their first album, Blue On Brown, a collection of Bob Dylan and Arlo Guthrie songs, followed in 2011 by Northern Redemption, their first all-original album, which nonetheless echoed the work of their bluegrass heroes such as the Louvin Brothers and Jim & Jesse. Their lives have revolved around music since childhood. Now that they’ve, in a sense, successfully completed their apprenticeship, The Abrams are poised to step onto the larger stages that modern country music offers. Their debut EP proves that, indeed, they were born ready.

For Canadian country music darling Madeline Merlo, 2017 is shaping up to be a big year. Driving-playlist essential, her new single “Whatcha Wanna Do About It” is the fourth release from her debut album. Making CMT’s Top 20 Country Music Chart, and Sirius XM’s #OnTheHoriszon List, played nationwide in the USA, it’s a toe-tapping follow-up to last summer’s catchy “Honey Jack,” which received widespread airplay and attracted both country and pop-music lovers alike. After the success of “Honey Jack,” Merlo opened for country royalty Keith Urban and went on to scoop up 2015’s Rising Star award at the Canadian Country Music Association Awards and Female Vocalist of the Year at the British Columbia Country Music Association Awards. Then, she rounded out 2015 touring with heavyweights Dean Brody and Paul Brandt. You can catch Merlo in her acting debut, in the upcoming country musical film Country Crush, inspired by the Nashville scene, out this summer. Merlo plays aspiring singer Nancy Taylor who falls in love in her quest for stardom, alongside Jana Kramer and Sophie Tweed-Simmons. This is Merlo’s first lead role in a movie, although she has previously worked with awardwinning director John ‘JP’ Poliquin on the immensely popular “Alive” music video. Madeline Merlo has always had eclectic taste, and in her music you’ll hear the influence of classic country of artists like Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline, R&B greats Etta James and Billie Holiday and modern superstars such as Miranda Lambert.

Youth enjoy a western day at Essex Railway Station by Sylene Argent The historic Essex Railway Station offered area youth a chance to feel what it would have been like to live in the wild west on Saturday as it hosted its Cowboys and Cowgirls event. During this special

event, youth were able to dress in their western best, colour, make crafts, and get their faces painted. They were also able to investigate and get their pictured taken inside a stagecoach that local

crafter Bob McCracken made. They were also able to explore one of the Railway Station’s cabooses. Those who attended were also treated to a hot dog lunch.

The event was hosted as a fun way to fundraise for and bring attention to the historic Essex Railway Station, which Heritage Essex maintains.

Organizers of the Cowboys and Cowgirls event, hosted at the Essex Railway Station on Saturday, display Bob McCracken’s stagecoach that was onsite for the unique event.

Kassian greets Essex fans

by Sylene Argent As a special treat for area residents, Jeff Smith’s County Chevrolet hosted a community barbeque, which welcomed Edmonton Oiler Zack Kassian. During the event, Smith said the traffic coming into the local car dealership was steady with those who wanted an autograph or photo with the NHLer, who started his professional career with the Windsor Spitfires. Kassian enjoyed participating in the event, which also included a barbequed lunch and ice cream. He said it is always nice to meet fans and is always humbled to learn of the support he has.

Former classmates host reunion that recognized over 50 years of friendship Photo submitted

by Sylene Argent For over a decade, a clew of friends who graduated from Corpus

Christi High School (now Brennan) in and around 1955 and 1956 have been gathering

annually at Ray and Bev Myers’s Woodslee farm to reconnect and celebrate their friendship.

The tradition continued last Thursday as the 2017 reunion was hosted. Even though several decades have passed since these classmates were in high school, they still take the time to re-connect at the annual reunion. In addition, many of these friends gather for monthly meet ups at area restaurants that typically has around 25 of these friends in attendance. Bev noted up to fifty former classmates attend the annual reunion. Attendees enjoy sharing

old stories, and also take the time to remember former classmates who have since passed on. Classmate Susie Korchnak organizes the events for everyone to enjoy. The duo noted when they were in high school, they were a close-knit group, like a family. After graduation, many went off into their separate ways to pursue careers and building a family, but over the past twenty years have made it a point to get together regularly.

Vintage Bicycle Open House... Continued from Page 8

many enthusiasts the history behind the bikes is what interests them the most. The couple noted that during WWII, bicycles were rationed, as the metal normally used to manufacture bicycles was directed towards the war effort. Farmers in Essex and across the nation could obtain permits to purchase bicycles, as they were considered necessary tools for farming. For many others, the bicycles are objects that transport them back to the simple days of childhood, bringing back feelings of nostalgia many haven’t felt in years. “It was a great way to connect with people, everyone had a bicycle as a kid,” Mark said, explaining how his event has brought people to his yearly event from towns as far away as Elmira. Mark and Cori first thought of the idea for the open house after visiting the Canadian Vintage Bicycle Show in Brantford years ago. They decided then there could be a more regional open house for enthusiasts in Essex County. With every passing year, the McGuire’s annual event seems to generate more and more interest with vintage bicycle enthusiasts, and with that the family plans on hosting the open house for many years to come.

Disaster Strike performs in the Heritage Gardens Park

by Sylene Argent The Arts, Culture, and Tourism committee’s weekly Tune up the Parks concert series continued last Wednesday evening from beneath the wings of the Essex Memorial Spitfire with Disaster Strike. The local rock band performed an array of classic covers for its attentive listening audience members, who were encouraged to clap along to a couple of the popular rock tunes played. The members of Disaster Strike play classic rock and modern tunes, too. Members noted it was an awesome experience to play at the local memorial structure during their set. More information about this band can be found at www.facebook.com/DisasterStrikeBand/. Throughout July and August, the ACT Committee

GRANT, Douglas James (1926-2017)- Doug was finally released from the bleak cage of dementia on August 27th. As Dylan Thomas advised, he did not “go gentle into that good night,” but “raged against the dying of the light.” Survived by his wife of 61 years, Gail; daughter Jill (and Doug’s best friend Dan Pouget); daughter Jennifer Luxon (Chris); son James (Barbara). Also survived by four grandchildren: Stephanie and Michael Gazzola, Jessica and Alex Grant; one great-grandchild: Hannah Gazzola; and good friends, Clarence and Jackie Pouget. Predeceased by mother, Lois, and sister, Bettye. Born in Chatham in 1926, Doug graduated from Western University (then UWO) medical school. He practiced dermatology in Kitchener while also maintaining an interest in his community and broader medical issues: as President of the K-W Academy of Medicine and the Waterloo Rotary Club, and as a delegate to the Ontario Medical Association and the College of Physicians and Surgeons, becoming president of the College in 1974. After Doug closed his practice in 1985, he and Gail moved to Bayfield, ON, where he worked as a consulting dermatologist for a number of hospitals. He continued his interest in community by serving on the Architectural Conservancy Board and acting as Councillor, then Reeve, of the village of Bayfield before fully retiring. A life well-lived: Doug’s personal and professional life was marked by integrity and a consistent concern for health care issues. The angels of Iler Lodge in Essex Ontario reflected the same ideals of integrity and concern in their care of Doug (and others) as his life waned. Doug’s family thanks them for their compassion. Cremation has taken place. Family, friends and angels are welcome to join in an informal gathering at the Kennedy Funeral Home Ltd. (519-776-7378) 128 Talbot St. N, Essex on Thursday, August 31, 2017 from 1-3 p.m. If you wish, donations may be made to the Pioneer Park Association in Bayfield, Ontario. You may send your condolences online at www. kennedy.com.

Ted Ducharme with his awesome ’52 Chevy 1300 pickup.

In 1952, a man from North Bay, Ontario, bought a new forest green Chevy 1300 pickup in Oshawa (identical to the U.S. model 3100). About Þfty years later, Ronnie Walker of Windsor acquired the truck with only 61,000 miles on it. Ted Ducharme of Cottam bought the truck from Ronnie in 2005 along with lots of spare parts and drove it another two years with the original six cylinder. Unable to keep up with trafÞc on the Interstate prompted Ted to add more horsepower. At Þrst, he installed a 305 small block Chevy with 4-speed on the ßoor and a Nova rear end but this proved unsatisfactory. He parked the truck for a year before deciding what to do next. Meanwhile, Ted had a 1994 Mustang GT for sale. Brad BloomÞeld was a body and paint man in Cottam and agreed to do all the work on TedÕs pickup in exchange for the Mustang. Work proceeded from September to May of 2013. The dazzling silver Þnish was suggested by BradÕs dad, Dave BloomÞeld. Polydor Girard did the upholstery and the dark red leather looks exactly as it did in 1952. Ted shipped the frame to SES on Howard Avenue, where it was stripped to bare metal and powder-coated. While they did their work, Ted picked up a 350 Chev V8 out of a Õ77 Motorhome with only 44,000 km. The camshaft came from a Õ66 Chevy 327-350 and gives a nice rumble. It was known in the day at the Detroit Dragway as the ÒSaturday Night Special.Ó The 700R4 transmission came from an ex-police car. The rear end with 3:23 gears came from an Õ82 Camaro. And best of all, all the parts in TedÕs Õ52 pickup are still available from all automotive supply stores. The front end straight axle and elliptical springs went to a Õ37 Chev coupe while Ted ordered parts from HeidtÕs in Chicago for a Mustang II front end that could be bolted right onto the truck frame. Cooper tires on 8-inch rims have Corvette Rally wheels. Front tires are 2:35x15 with 2:75x15 in the rear. The front bumper is only 7 ½ inches off the ground. Several friends deserve special mention. TedÕs son, Jason, pitched in whenever he could. Ron Tate and Joe Beaulieu helped out a lot. And Connie Anhorn came through with hard-to-Þnd parts. The truck was Þnally Þnished and Ted drove it without the hood on its maiden voyage to a car show in Michigan on the long August weekend in 2013. HeÕs been driving it ever since. And if it picks up the occasional scratch or ding, who cares? HeÕs having fun, and thatÕs what this hobby is all about! I’m always looking for more stories. Email billtsherk@ sympatico.ca or write Bill Sherk, 25 John St., P.O. Box 255, Leamington, Ont. N8H 3W2.

Essex Juniors win OBA championship

by Fred Groves The Essex Yellowjackets are Ontario Baseball Association ‘AA’ champions. On August 18-20, the Wayne Nevin and Tom O’Neil coached team travelled to Chatham where it won five straight games to claim the junior provincial title. In the final game, Essex easily blanked Mississauga South West 7-0, but it was not all shutout ball. The home team opened up with an 11-3 win over Stratford and then followed that up with a come-from-behind 8-6 win over Wyoming. “I had a pretty good idea what teams were going there and I knew if we got past Stratford we would be in a good position,” Nevin said. Against Wyoming, Essex was trailing 4-0 early in the game, but pitcher Ryan Holmes, called up from the midget squad, came on in relief and was solid in getting the win. Marcus MacEachran, who was the tournament Most Valuable Player, had a three-run homer. Essex beat Mississauga 5-0 in another preliminary game and got by Walker Homesites 6-3. “We work on things and you want to execute those and we did,” Nevin said. Pitching was a big reason why Essex won the championship. Besides Holmes, Nik Motruck pitched against Stratford and allowed just three hits. In the final, Brandon Nevin only gave up three hits. This is the third year Essex has had a Junior team, and last season it lost a heartbreaking 1-0 in the semis against London at the OBA tournament. The Essex Junior Yellowjackets played in the Essex Senior Baseball League for the second straight year where they compiled a 7-8-2 record, but more importantly picked up some experience from older players. “They played well,” Nevin said of winning the OBA. “We used the Senior League to get better.” The future looks bright for the Junior Yellowjackets who will only lose five players out of 21. “The guys coming in are pretty good,” Nevin commented.
