by Sylene Argent Another successful installment of the Essex Fun Fest has come and passed, and as a result many area residents will be able to cherish the memories made on the fairgrounds for years to come. Grandparents and parents took youngsters to the fairgrounds over its four days of

operation to enjoy exciting rides and tasty treats, and for a chance to win neat prizes after playing some fun games along the midway. Teens enjoyed the rides, and many enjoyed competing in Sunday’s Rise 2 Fame Youth Talent Search. Bargain hunters of all ages visited vendor tables onsite at the fairgrounds in search of unique items, while others visited

the Coin & Nostalgia Show at Essex Railway Station or the Essex & District Horticultural Society’s annual Flower Show hosted at Essex United Church on Saturday to enjoy the unique displays at both of those venues. Music lovers enjoyed tributes to three

Essex Mayor Ron McDermott (left) and Bill Gay of Heritage Essex (right) congratulate area resident Tim Catherwood on having earned the 2016 Essex Citizen of the Year honour.

by Sylene Argent Before the Foreigner tribute band “Jukebox Heroes” took to the stage on Saturday evening at the Essex Fun Fest, members of the community warmly congratulated Essex resident Tim Catherwood on having earned the 2016 Essex Citizen of the year honour. Catherwood is the Vice Chairperson of the Hotel Dieu Grace Healthcare new non-acute care hospital and the chairperson of the Changing Lives Together Foundation, which supports the hospital through raising funds and awareness about what it does. Catherwood is also on the Board for United Way. “My wife will tell you my calendar is full,” Catherwood said with a smile. Last fall, Catherwood said he retired as Vice President of human Resources for Green Shield. It is important for Catherwood to be a part of all of these boards because he said he feels very blessed in his own life. He also expressed that service to the community is important. Many people within the community are volunteering,

feeling the call to assist those in need, he said. He added volunteering is important to him. Being involved in so many boards can be hard work, but it is also a lot of fun. “It is really important people give back,” he said. “It can be a small commitment.” Catherwood’s daughter, Jessica, nominated him for the 2016 Essex Citizen of the Year honour. He said he was thrilled and honoured that his daughter put his name forward and that he was further selected, “Because when I think about all those who volunteer, it is quite an honour and a great thing.” Jessica, Catherwood said, is also volunteering her time with the United Way as well. The Essex Citizen of the Year award has been given out to deserving individuals since 1978. The Essex Knights of Columbus, The Essex Rotary Club, and Heritage Essex team up to organize the recognition. They will further organize a banquet that will be held in the fall to honour Catherwood. This event also acts as a fundraiser for Heritage Essex.

It will be interesting to see what the Integrity Commissioner will recommend after having reviewed the in-house fighting that has occurred within Essex’s Council Chambers over the past year. But I’m not convinced a recommendation from a consultant will fix the problem entirety, but perhaps it can be a good start to tackling the issue as he will be able to see things from a different perspective. Maybe too many emotions have gotten in the way of being able to solve anything at this point, but that doesn’t mean those wounds can’t heal. I’m forever that optimist when it comes to believing that anything is achievable. I think no matter what the Integrity Commissioner recommends, there could be members of council

who many disagree with the recommendations he will make. And, alternatively, perhaps there will be members of Council who will agree. Ultimately, whatever he recommends, Council would have to adopt those recommendations to put them into place as far as I have been able to tell. No matter what the recommendations, the consequences will not heal old wounds. Only understanding and a willingness to move past those issues that have become so raw can. But, perhaps, the report expected from the Integrity Commissioner in around August will help highlight some less-than-favourable behaviours that perhaps certain members of Council did not notice they were bestowing. It may be easier to hear, and later see, of some wrong doing

after hearing it from a third party that is coming in to make what should be a fair recommendation based on an unbiased opinion. Whatever the results, the issues have to be put to rest. They are personal issues, no matter who believes which members of council are in the right or in the wrong. Vision, positivity, dedication, and follow through for implementation of ongoing projects are what drive a municipality to be successful. I hope the focus can be on those things as we move ahead into the future.

Let’s Talk About... by Evelyn Couch Is there good debt? The word debt sounds ominous. Why would we think there is any good debt? Few of us could own a home without it, or is a mortgage considered a debt? I think so; based on the thought that we need a home and that when we owe money it is a debt. According to an article in the magazine for seniors, the Good Times, of the huge amount of money owed by Canadians in 2012, 77 percent was for mortgage. There is a possibility the value of your home may increase, so owning it provides opportunity for increasing your assets. There is more to be considered than whether it will increase in value, and there have been times when the value of a home dropped. The real value is simply in the sense of security and pride in knowing this place is mine and provides a place for family. When you make repairs or add advantages such as landscaping, you feel that sense of accomplishment. See what I have done to this place? I don’t need to say more about the value, emotional or financial, that comes with owning a home. So that surely makes a mortgage a good debt. Borrowing money for a vacation is questionable, but the joy it can add to your life has real value, providing you can pay off that debt in a short time before the interest grows to the point it is a source of worry. It all has to do with ability to repay what is borrowed quickly. It has something to do with the rate of interest as well. Do you remember when it was as high as 24 percent for one year and stayed above 20 percent for several years? I know all about that. At one time I could not pay the interest I owed the bank and I had to add it to my debt. There is a lot more to consider regarding debt, and

Letter to the Editor... Let me start by stating that I think the actions taken by some members of our Town Council during and after our last

council meeting were reprehensible and cannot be allowed to continue. We have a procedure to deal with these issues

Letter to the Editor... This letter is in regards to an article written in the Windsor Star concerning discord within the Essex Council chambers. When our town’s dirty laundry is plastered on the front page of the paper it gives Essex a black eye! What gives one Councillor the right to tell the Mayor he should step down from office, after serving this town with dignity for the past 13 years. Our Mayor is a kind, gentle man, who has won the hearts of the residents of Essex since 2003. To be told that quote, he is the elephant in the room, is nothing more than disrespectful towards a man who was voted into office many times by the people he serves. Personally, I think that this Councillor is afraid that if the Mayor runs again for office, that he would win. To be mayor for the past 13 years must say something about his character and his unwavering desire to make this town a better place to live for all of its citizens. Mary Lou Chibi Essex, On

and they will be followed. What I would like to point out is the fact that once all the distraction was finished, the council and administration carried on with the business of the town. They addressed safety issues at the harbour as well as how best to get the government’s ear regarding the widening of highway 3, dealt with Finance Committee recommendations, as well as zoning issues. In spite of the sometimes juvenile and antagonistic nature of our council there are many great things happening in our town. Sylene pointed out many in her op-ed last week. Heritage Garden Park, Victoria Plaza, development next to

Beach Walk, Brady’s, the Guardian, and the new Michigan. The town is continuing to beautify through the CIP as more property owners take advantage. We have increased urban trails, rural trails, Cypher System Greenway, Jackson Park, the Harbour, CWATS and the Collavino Industrial Park with Sellicks. These things happen because dedicated men and women in our administration and on council work together with a shared vision. We don’t always agree on everything, but there is no questioning our commitment to the town of Essex. As a council we are bruised, but in my opinion we are not broken.

By continuing to enforce our rules of procedure and adhering to our code of conduct I would hope the second half of this council’s tenure will be carried out in a much more professional manner. This we owe to

the residents who elected us to council. Steve Bjorkman Councillor, Town of Essex

the much anticipated Prince and Princess Youth Talent Showcase that allowed area youth an opportunity to showcase their talents and charm a panel of judges. Youth also had the opportunity to visit the kids zone, take a pony ride, or enjoy a sing along during the Enchanted Adventure Parties hosted on the performance stage. This year’s festival offered a major changed as the fireworks were moved from Sunday evening to Saturday evening. Saturday was a busy day in town as the Fun Fest Committee offered its annual parade that proceeded down Talbot Street from Fairview to Maidstone Avenue. This year’s parade theme was Celebrating The 2016 Summer Olympics. Following the parade, the Essex Centre BIA offered its annual Classic Car Show. The watermelon eating contest also took place on Saturday afternoon. Over the weekend, the Essex Fun Fest Committee welcomed an array of entertainment, which included the high energy “The Ben Show,” President’s Choice Superdogs: The Pow Wow Factor, Classic Championship Wrestling, Craz-E-Crew Extreme BMX Stunt Team performances, a horseshoe tournament, and several interactive Kingsport Environmental Birds of Prey shows. Even though this year’s festival had to combat some rain over the weekend, it was believe Saturday’s attendance was likely the best it has been over the past few years. It is suspected around 20,000 people visited the fairgrounds over the fourday festival.

Think Bike Safety this summer submitted to EFP School has just ended and already youth are getting on their bikes every day to enjoy the summer weather. The Essex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is offering the following tips

to help prevent serious crashes involving bicycle riders: • Stay alert. Cyclists must follow the rules of the road and always watch out for vehicles; assume that drivers don’t see you. Motorists need

to recognize that bikes are smaller, lighter and more maneuverable. Slow down and give yourself time to react to a cyclist. • Buckle the helmet. Riders under 18 years are required to wear a properly fit, CSA approved bike

Local student earns “Adventures In Citizenship”

submitted to EFP Recently, the Rotary Clubs of Essex and Ottawa sponsored the “Adventures In Citizenship” Program for a local student. This annual event is offered to students across Canada who exhibit strong leadership potential. Selected students are heavily involved in school and community events through volunteering and have demonstrated an understanding of the Rotary Motto “Service above Self.” The 2016 selected student was Emma Kovacs. While in Ottawa for four days she,

helmet. Safe Kids Canada estimates a bike helmet reduces the risk of serious head injury by 85%. • Ride during daylight. Biking at night is not recommended. The safest way to get your bike home after dark is to walk it. If you have to bike at night, install a light, reflectors on the bike and wear reflective clothing. • Ride with traffic. Cyclists should travel as far to the right as possible in the same direction as

along with 200 other students from across Canada, visited the Federal Parliament buildings, met with the Speaker of the House, toured the Canadian War Museum, and sat in on the swearing in ceremony for several new Canadian citizens. traffic. Always ride single file, use appropriate hand signals to indicate turns and don’t carry passengers if you don’t have extra seats. • Regular maintenance. Monitor brakes, tire pressure, chain, gear selector, seat height and handle bar height. Especially before the first ride after winter. A bike that’s too big, too small or in bad repair isn’t safe. • Sound device. All bikes must have a sound

signaling device like a horn or a bell for safety. Ride with both hands on the handlebars unless signaling a turn or a problem. Riding a bike is a fun activity that gives you a chance to exercise and travel without polluting the environment. When riding on a hot day consider sunglasses, sunscreen and drink lots of water. Stay alert, stay safe and enjoy your bike ride.

County kids learn farm safety

Michelle McLean answers questions about Buddy the Bull. Alexis sits on an OPP ATV, while her friend Avyn stands by, at Farm Safety Day in Harrow last Tuesday.

by Jennifer Cranston Last Tuesday, the Essex County Farm Safety Association held its second kids’ Farm Safety Day of the year at the Harrow Fairgrounds. Each year the Association holds two full days of fun and educational activities for area children. The first is held at a county school and the second is open to children from all over Windsor and Essex County. This year’s open event boasted eight stations. There were two new stations this year. The first taught kids about how to deal with extreme weather like thunder and lightning, extreme temperatures, and tornadoes. The second was about underground utilities. Other stations included hand tools, first aid and 911, disability awareness, farm equipment, large animals, and ATV safety. As always there was also a PTO demonstration that shows children what can happen to a person who gets caught in machinery. Avyn and her friend Alexis attended the event together. Avyn said that she was surprised at the animal station when she learned that, while uncommon, it is possible for a bull to be friendly. Alexis was impressed with the ATV station. She learned that around 60

percent of people injured on ATVs were injured because they were not wearing a helmet. Michelle and John McLean brought their bull Buddy to meet the children that day. Buddy is a unique bull in that he thinks his mother is a human. Michelle explained how that came to be. “Buddy is not a typical bull. When he was born his mother died, so I became his mother,” she said. Buddy did not meet other cattle until his was six months old. Even though Buddy isn’t as aggressive as other bulls, he is still very big and very strong. Children

learned that large animals can do person harm without intending to. It’s important for anyone near animals to use caution and know how to handle that animal safely. For kids, a good rule to follow is to never approach an animal unless you have an adult with you who knows that animal, the McLeans explained. Vicky Morrison attended the event this year in her capacity as a parent and 4H Cloverbuds leader. At several farm safety days in the past, Morrison has volunteered, bringing her animals out to help kids learn animal safety. She said that when you live in the county

it is important to have an understanding of the dangers on a farm. Even kids who do not live on farms will likely visit friends who do. Volunteers manned each station during the event. Volunteers also worked hard to provide lunch for the 65 children and 20 adults who participated in the event. The cost of the delicious lunch of hotdogs, local vegetables, watermelon, ice cream, and more was covered with the help of local sponsors. Organizer Anne Anger said these safety days would not be possible with the help of volunteers and sponsors.

by Sylene Argent Engines were revving on Saturday afternoon as the Essex Centre BIA hosted another successful installment of its annual Classic Car Show as part of the Essex Fun Fest activities. Participants wanting to take part in the car show filed in along Talbot Street after the Essex Fun Fest parade made its way through the downtown business core. Hundreds of classic car

owners, from throughout the region, gathered in Essex Centre to support the long-running event. The Classic Car Show creates a lot of foot traffic in the downtown area. With the added visitors to Essex Centre, many area businesses took part in the street-wide sidewalk sale to offer special savings while engaging the community about what products or services they offer.

Thanks to a host of generous area businesses, The Essex Centre BIA handed out many raffle prizes to lucky car show participants. Instead of collecting entry fees, the Essex Centre BIA was pleased to accept non-perishable food items for area food banks. Youth showcase talent to rise to fame

Regional band Millennia will move to compete at Western Fair.

Emily Garrod, Mikayla Bondy, and Teodora Taleski will move on to compete at Western Fair.

by Sylene Argent The region is full of young people who have amazing talent in a variety of ways. And, some of these youth were able to showcase their special gifts on Sunday afternoon during the Essex Fun Fest as TD Canada Trust presented the annual Rise 2 Fame Youth Talent Search. Two age categories were offered to the youth competitors, who mainly offered singing and instrumental performances. The participants, leading up to the event, continuously practiced to ensure they could

put forward the best performances they could for the audience, and also for the panel of judges, who all had musical backgrounds. Katie Brochert is the Rise 2 Fame Youth Talent Search Coordinator. She said the purpose of the event is, “To let the town see the local talent and give young artists a chance to get stage time to show the talent they have.” Being able to see the variety of talent on Sunday morning was an amazing experience, she commented. She said the 2016 installment of this event was successful, and

had, “A lot of dynamic competitors.” The panel of judges assessed each of the performance, and selected a few of the participants to move on to compete at the Western Fair. They assessed each participant based on natural ability, quality of performance, showmanship, and audience engagement. Before coordinating the Rise 2 Fame Youth Talent Search, Brochert was a competitor. Being able to move onto the Wester Fair, she said, is an incredible experience. “It’s unreal. It’s amazing to be in front of hundreds of people who

Wrestling is a fan favourite at Essex Fun Fest

by Jennifer Cranston A small group of men could be seen setting up lawn chairs about three feet from the corner of an empty ring more than 30 minutes before dozens of children and their families would arrive, and before any action would start. They wanted good seats for what is their favourite part of the Fun Fest

weekend. Classic Championship Wrestling has been a crowd pleaser for years at the Fun Fest and this year was no exception. Around 12 wrestlers in outrageous costumes and over-the-top personas tossed each other around the ring in classic pro-wrestling style. Each of the wrestlers took plenty of time interacting with the crowd and going above and beyond to make their show the popular attraction that brings people back each year. The company is based in Chatham and tours all of Ontario, bringing their family-friendly entertainment to festivals and fairgrounds all summer long. If you missed them in Essex, you can catch them at the Comber Fair in August.

by Sylene Argent The Arts, Culture and Tourism (ACT) Committee was pleased to welcome Steve Morin & Friends to the Heritage Gardens Park on the evening of Wednesday, July 6. This band, consisting of local musicians, was the special musical guest in the Essex Summer Music Series. The local group performed its folk, blues, and jazz style music to a good sized crowd of listeners, who clapped along as the band played classic covers and a few original tunes, too. Morin sang and played the guitar, banjo, and harmonica throughout the performance. He and his band mates shared the percussion duties throughout their performance, and also took turns offering the vocals. The community is invited to bring along a lawn chair to enjoy these free Wednesday evening concerts in Essex Centre. A hat is passed around

near the end of each performance so patrons can offer a donation to the performers if they wish to do so. Similar events are hosted in Colchester on

Monday evenings. Fiddle player Todd Porter is scheduled to perform in Essex Centre on July 20, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

David Donald McCallum April 29, 1950--July 13, 2012 I Cried More Tears Today! Because the sadness won’t go away. 4 years ago you left us, we will never forget that day. Your absence is felt in many different ways, along the road of life. There is a lot of strife - and now new life! When you were here, it was easy to bear. Now your gone, and life seems wrong. Time can never fill the emptiness in our hearts, but we know you will always be near Not only in our hearts, but also in our thoughts and prayers. Love and Miss You Even More!!

BELLEAU, Bernard, “Bernie” 82 years, Passed away peacefully with his family by his side on July 10,2016. Beloved husband of Theresa (Terry) nee Montague for 58 years. Father of the late Gregory, Audrey Knapp (Maurice), Glen (Karen) and Char Pomeroy (John). Cherished Grandpa of Angela, Andrew, Amanda, David, Conor and Benjamin. Loving Great Grandpa of Ruby, Emmerson, Joshua and Wesley. Survived by his sister Aurelia Dunn. Predeceased by 5 brothers, Leo, Don, Fred, Perp and sister Ella Mae Markham. Brother-in-law of Yvette Montague and Larry Montague. He will also be missed by many nieces and nephews. Bernard was the manager of Lawn Equipment and Spadafora Auctioneers. He always looked forward to his summer fishing trips with the boys and you can bet he always brought home a least one fish story along with his Balderson cheese. Hunting trips were in the fall where he made many memories with his brothers and nephews. He was always up for a good hand of pinochle or pepper as playing cards was his favourite pastime. He was a modern day Sanford and Son, spending his retirement buying and selling. Bernard enjoyed being surrounded by the love of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren even in the last hours of his life. The family would like to give thanks to Country Village Nursing home for the love and compassion they’ve shown Bernard in the last year. Visiting at Reid Funeral Home & Reception Centre, 87 Maidstone Avenue East Essex, (519-776-4233) on Thursday, July 14, 2016 from 2-4 & 6pm until time of Funeral Service at 8:00 pm. The Family of the Late

Ella Mae Markham

Passed - 6/22/16 Perhaps you sent a lovely card, or sat quietly in a chair. Perhaps you sent a funeral spray. If so, we saw it there. Perhaps you spoke the kindest words. Any friend could say... Perhaps you were not there at all, But thought of us that day. Whatever you did to console our hearts. We thank you so much. Whatever the part.

February 5, 1933 - July 9, 2013 It is sad to walk the road alone, instead of side by side, but to all there comes a moment when the way of life divides. You gave me years of happiness, then came sorrow and tears, but you left me beautiful memories, I treasure through the years. Alone but not quite alone, I face an empty chair, but sometimes in silence, I imagine you are there. My companion for so many years, no longer here with me, and yet in some mysterious way, you keep me in your company. I’d like to think when life is done, wherever Heaven may be, you’ll be standing at the door, up there to welcome me.

Love you forever & ever and always Dear Heart... ~ Norm xoxo ~ _________________________________________________________

It is so hard to believe, that ten years have gone by. The amount we miss you, can still make us cry. Our family is flourishing; Grandchildren are out on their own. You would be so proud, of how everyone has grown. You are always in our thoughts, and we speak of you often. The name ‘Papa’ spoken with love, you will never be forgotten. Until we meets again some day, send more butterflies our way! ~ Love Always, Judy and Family

LA’s Slo-Pitch Tourney benefits Hospice Erie Shores 1927 Dodge Brothers sedan at Canadian Automotive Museum

Pictured left: 1927 Dodge at Canadian Automotive Museum. Note solid disc wheels. Pictured below: Front view shows temperature gauge above radiator.

Since 1963, the Canadian Automotive Museum at 99 Simcoe St. South in Oshawa has been the home of a dazzling array of historic vehicles, some dating back to over a century. One of the latest acquisitions is a solid and original 1927 Dodge Brothers Model A sedan recently donated by Dave Atkinson of Markham, Ontario. It was first owned by Joseph Malfara of Willowdale, Ontario, and later sold to Dave in 1996. The original price when new was $1310 and the car is equipped with a fourcylinder engine with 212.5 cubic inches cranking out 24 horsepower. For 1927, the engine was given five main bearings instead of the previous three, greatly adding to the smoothness and performance of our feature car. The Dodge brothers, John and Horace were born in Michigan and were trained as machinists who began building quality bicycles in Windsor, Ontario, in 1899. By 1901, they had a factory in Detroit building parts for cars. A year later, that factory received an order from the Olds Motor Works for 3,000 transmissions. Soon after that, they were supplying the Ford Motor Company with engines and other chassis parts transported through the streets of Detroit on wagons hauled by teams of horses. Henry Ford offered them a 10% interest in his company, which the brothers eagerly accepted. Following a dispute with Henry Ford in 1914, the Dodge brothers began building cars bearing their name. The first one appeared in November of that year as a 1915 model and was well received with 22,000 applications for dealerships. Both Dodge brothers died in 1920 and their widows sold the company in 1925 to a group of New York banking interests for $146 million. Dodge cars in Canada were built in a factory on Dufferin Street in Toronto from 1924 to 1928. Our feature car at the Oshawa Museum was built in Toronto with serial number A710914. Standard equipment included a tool kit, jack, speedometer, ammeter, electric horn, theft-proof lock on the transmission, bumpers, rear tire carrier, rear view mirror, and a headlight dimmer. Wire wheels were optional. In 1928, Walter Chrysler bought the Dodge Company and moved production from Toronto to Windsor, where he already had a factory building Chrysler cars. He also added the new DeSoto and Plymouth, all beginning in 1928. That’s when people started talking about the Big Three. I’m always looking for more stories. Email billtsherk@sympatico. ca or write Bill Sherk, 25 John St., P.O. Box 255, Leamington, Ont. N8H 3W2. Everyone whose story is published in this column will receive a free autographed copy of my book: “OLD CAR DETECTIVE FAVOURITE STORIES, 1925 to 1965.”

As it became clear to Garant that she would soon have to consider moving to Hospice, she hoped she would be able to wait until the

Leamington location was open. “She worried about her family having to travel,” Lafleur said. It became clear to her in mid-March that she would not be able to wait for Erie Shores. She moved into the Windsor location where she only spent one day. She passed on March 17. Another Friend, Shannon Pogue, said that Garant was unique in her battle with cancer, in that many people were surprised to learn she was sick. “Her 10 year battle was inspirational,” Pogue said. Garant was active and appeared healthy throughout the majority of her fight. “She was a ball player

and played with many of these players,” Pogue said. “She was part of the ball community for years, and played in this tournament.” Hospice helped the team to recruit supporters and door prizes for the weekend. James Cunningham of Molson also came through with cups, swag, and raffle prizes. The band Echo Steps entertained on Saturday night, and overall it was a great time for a great cause.
