Community Concert Band performs in music series by Sylene Argent Under the direction of Conductor of Dee Shaw, members of the woodwind, percussion, and brass instrument ensemble, the Essex Community Concert Band, engaged a large audience as they perform last Wednesday evening in Essex Centre as part of the Tune up the Parks concert series. Britt Kascjak, Secretary for the band, explained Wednesday’s event was the group’s first performance to kick off its summer concert session. The band will perform in the Tune up the Parks series on July 31 at Colchester Harbour. The local concert band, she said, is always looking for new members, any age, who can play. For more information about the band, log onto eccband.com. Members of the Sun Parlour Chorus opened the evening with barbershop music. According to essex.ca, classic

rock and county band Southwest Sound is scheduled to perform

on June 28 and country vocalist Abigail Neves is scheduled to

perform July 5 at 7:00pm in the Heritage Gardens Park.

Fire Master Plan suggests new station by Fred Groves A comprehensive five-year Master Plan could result in another new fire hall being built in Essex. Pomax Consulting recently presented Master Fire Plan 2017-2021 to Council, which includes building a new fire hall to replace the current Station 2 facility, located in Gesto. Jan Hambides of Pomax noted that the ideal location for the new hall would be at the corner of Malden Road and County Road 15. “There are no incidents in the Gesto area. This is one of the reasons we are suggesting it

moves,” Hambides said. The cost of the new hall is estimated at $2.5 million and could be built within the next five years. In his report, Hambides noted that response times to McGregor would be improved by four to five minutes. “It’s a good move and greater value to the Town.” The detailed report also noted that the Harrow fire hall (Station #3) is in need of renovations at a cost of up to $200,000. Recommendations included instead of having two aerial trucks, which the Essex Fire

and Rescue Services currently has, that only one is needed and it be located centrally at the new hall (Station #2). As members of Council and the fire services listened to the report, a couple of Councillors questioned the timing and wanted public input. “This isn’t in our five-year financial plan. It’s a little daunting, this is a lot of money. Obviously, there is going to have to have to be some long-term borrowing,” Councillor Bill Caixeiro said.

Happy 150th birthday Canada by Fred Groves In a few short days, Canada will celebrate a huge birthday. On July 1, 1867, what is now known as Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick, united to form a nation. The Founding Fathers included Ontario’s George Brown, Sir Alexander Campbell, Sir John A. MacDonald, and William McDougall, who were all present at the famous Charlettetown Conference. What started as a nation of 3.4 million has now swelled to 36.7 million and stretches from coast to coast, across mountains, through prairies, and prides itself on diversity. Manitoba and Northwest Territories (1870), British Columbia (1871), Prince Edward Island (1875), Yukon Territory (1898), Saskatchewan and Alberta (1905), Newfoundland (1949), and Nunavut (1999) make up this vast nation we call home. Now, 150 years since conception, there are 105 Senators and 338 Members of Parliament, one of which is Essex MP Tracey Ramsey. The first MP of this area was Conservative John O’Connor, who was born in Boston, became a lawyer and a judge, and in 1867 in the first session of parliament asked the question, whether it was the intention of the government to introduce a

Bill during that session to establish a general system of banking. One of O’Connor’s political opponents at the time, but who never got elected, was the founder of Essex Centre, Alexander Cameron. Back in 1867, Cameron, who had bought property where the high school is now from Timothy Jones, quickly began to establish himself as a prominent businessman. He was a lawyer, owned a woolen factory, and toll roads, lent money and set up the first newspaper, the Essex Record, in 1870. The Free Press recently asked current MP Tracey Ramsey (NDP) a few questions pertaining to

“I don’t want to do it without a lot of public input,” Councillor Sherry Bondy added. Councillor Randy Voakes said that the safety of the volunteer firefighters is paramount, and Deputy Mayor Richard Meloche added if the new hall is being recommended, Council should take a close look at it. The Master Plan indicated that the Town needs to do a better job on what is called ‘service delivery standards,’ which is the recording of response times and the number of firefighters at each incident. Fire Chief Rick Arnel said his department will review the plan. “This sets a baseline for us. Our plan is to come back with recommendations to you,” he said.

Town recognizes Wright’s retirement at Harrow Arena by Sylene Argent Having worked at the Harrow Arena for over 31 years, Paul Wright has decided to retire. To show appreciation for the years of dedicated service to the community, the Town of Essex hosted a surprise party last Friday afternoon, which also allowed family, friends, arena users, and Town staff a chance to pop in and wish Wright well. Wright recalled he was hired on June 1,

1986. He was unemployed at the time, having just lost his previous job where he worked for the government. Before he had lost his job, he and his wife had purchased a house in Harrow. And, soon after, his wife had lost her job, too. They had two young boys. “I came over to the arena and put my name in for a job,” Wright said. He was excited to soon be hired on.

When he was first hired, he had many duties, including looking after the canteen, skate sharpening, and caring for the ice. He called himself a “Jack of all trades-a master of none.” He would become a Lead Hand Supervisor, looking after daily tasks, scheduling, and doing different inspections. In his time working at the Harrow Arena, there have been big changes, including when Harrow

Continued Essex Council Notes for June 19 by Sylene Argent Winter control equipment Essex Council awarded the Request for Tender for a single axle plow truck cab and chassis 2017 to Team Truck Centres for around $125,900, and further awarded the Request for Proposal for Supply of Winter Control Equipment for a single axle plow truck to Viking-Cives for around $125,900. The report to Council notes Essex is updating and adding to its vehicle fleet. These new pieces of equipment will be used by the Public Works Department. It also notes funds have been allocated towards the Single Axle Plow Truck Cab and Chassis and the Winter Control Equipment for the Single Axle Plow Truck in the 2017 approved capital budget.

Bell Small Cell Master Licence Agreement Council approved having administration finalize negotiations and enter into an agreement with Bell Canada as it pertains to the Bell Small Cell Master Licence Agreement. The report to Council notes this agreement would allow Bell the use of Town owned facilities to attach Small Cell Te l e c o m m u n i c a t i o n s Equipment and provide Wireless telecommunications services. The report states the antennas are inconspicuous and would blend in to the buildings, light, and hydro standards “This would provide residents with improved mobile connectivity in the downtown cores and also enhanced connectivity during events and festivals throughout the

Country Village residents triple support goal for Alzheimer Society submitted to EFP The residents of Country Village tripled their original goal of $500.00 to $1550.00 for the Alzheimer Society. The amount raised will be matched by the Alzheimer Society of Essex County, totaling $3,100.00, to be used for local programs. Raising money for this cause is important to many at Country Village as Alzheimer’s take away a loved one’s ability to communicate, walk, eat, and even swallow. Those affected by Alzheimer’s are university professors, computer scientists, housewives, farmers, and so much more. Alzheimer`s disease and other types of dementia do not discriminate and can affect people from all walks of life. The goal of the local society, where the money was donated, will support the families that are being affected by this horrible disease.

ERCA to look at Viscount drainage issue Councillor Randy Voakes began discussions on the issue he heard of, pertaining to Viscount Estate flooding/water runoff that may be linked to ERCA. He wanted Council to participate in finding a resolution. Kevin Money, of the Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA), attended the meeting. He said he didn’t think he was fully

aware of the concerns. A starting point for him would be to get familiar with those complaints that have come to Voakes. Councillor Larry Snively said he sits on the ERCA Board and said the issue had not been brought up at ERCA Board meetings, so it was a new issue to him, too. Money said he would be happy to do a site visit to look at the issue. He further suggested Town staff and the drainage superintendent attend that meeting. Chris Nepszy, Director of Infrastructure and Development, said this is a unique situation as the two parties involved are Viscount and ERCA.

The two parties, he said, either have to look at putting in a municipal drain or start a petition, which is allowed through the Municipal Drainage Act where a certain percentage of landowner

in favour can move the process forward. That is something the Town can guide, he noted. Money said he will initiate the steps to look at the issue.

Opinion - by Fred Groves

Where is the money coming from? Is there a vault full of money in the town hall we don’t know about? There must be or how else would Essex Town Council be able to afford everything they’ve got on their plate. I tried to come up with a few bigticket items, and no doubt there are many we’re not aware of. Let’s see, there is the proposed new town hall with a sticker price of six million, renovations to the Harrow fire station at up to $200,000, a new fire station #2 at over two million, a new fire aerial truck at $1.4 million, the law suit with Gulf Developments,

the new sports facility across the highway, and Harrow High School. The list is extensive and what is frightening is that all of this comes in less than five years and most of it in two to three years. I appreciate the fact the Town has done its homework by creating Master Plans with five year forecasts in several areas, but the money just isn’t there. I also comprehend that all the surrounding municipalities are moving ahead and we need to keep up, or at least be on the same playing field. So where do you draw the line? It’s pretty tough to ignore the needs of the fire department, but everything else, oh wait, I forgot the severance pay for the fired former

CAO, might have to be re-looked at. If the Town can come up with a way to at least break even on the deal with Harrow High, that would be okay, but it might take some creative financing for everything else. Council wants to keep its debt down to $15 million or less while maintaining a healthy reserve that now sits at $24 million. Ratepayers shouldn’t get too excited about that last figure as a lot of it is earmarked already and will put a dent in the wish list. A pot of gold at the end of the rainbow sure would be nice, but in all reality how many of the current council members are going to be around when it comes time to cut those big checks? Hopefully none.

So, why do I get frustrated as a Councillor/Taxpayer? Let me start by saying that traditionally, I let political conflictual issues run off. But, when I see reporters of this paper being subjected to rudeness by Council because of their integrity to you in making sure you get the facts and not coffee shop rhetoric, I find it politically deplorable that the Mayor and certain Council members would approach Sylene Argent and indicate to her she should be more careful on how she writes about Council in her reports, and we were sent an email by administration not to respond to the reporters of the Essex Free Press, specifically Fred Groves. I want to advise everyone reading this I sit in these meetings and view these processes and I can reassure all that the integrity and accuracy of the words of their articles are factual and accurate and that is their job to report out what is transpiring. I’ve all said before to Council, if you don’t want it printed, don’t say it. So, take a look at this picture and ask Councillor Voakes/taxpayer, ‘why do you get so frustrated with Council? Aren’t you supposed be on the team, as quoted by the Mayor and many on Council.’ This is not a team I want to be on and just a few of the reasons why are below: Conferences. Thousands and thousands are spent yearly going to conferences. Collectively, as a result of Council and administration going to conferences, it could easily breach $35 to $40 thousand in any given year, and nothing tangible comes as a result of attending these conferences. Ask any Councillor to take you anywhere in the Municipality and put your hand or show anything obtained by conference attendance. For the record, I’ve never attended a conference nor will I. The dismissal CAO Tracey Pillion-Abbs. I have been advised by the Mayor, Council, and administration I can’t identify to you as a taxpayer what the severance package for their ill-fated decision to fire her will cost the taxpayer, but I can tell you this: if you knew it would make you sick to your stomach! And, I strongly believe taxpayers should have this amount since it is their hard-earned money and minimal retirement income that pays this severance from their taxes. I believe the severance package should be public knowledge because I believe my colleagues on Council made a bad decision and now they are trying to hide this information from the taxpayers who will pay this severance package. They will tell you it is privacy concerns, but I beg to differ. Here is a lady who had one objective and this is to put Essex back on the map, but was never given the chance. She was hired by Council and merely eight months later fired by Council, with Council fully aware she had no CAO experience. She left a good job in Leamington to come here, and the only excuse that Council could give for here release was “she was taking the Town in the wrong direction.” WHAT! Every thing she did is was on the direction of Council. So, if you ask me, why they let

her go, there is not one profound reason, but please ask someone else on Council I would like to see their answer. The Boundary Review. $51 thousand on a boundary review report by a consultant to direct us on how to put an elected Deputy Mayor in place. Heaven forbid we don’t benchmark how the other six municipalities do it. The Organization Review: $31 thousand. We had a consultant come in to look at our organization structure. The person who did this for us was a Councillor and now sits as a Mayor of another municipality. Enough said!! The Integrity Commissioner. For $29 thousand, Council and administration had an integrity commissioner brought in to review my approaches and diligence on Council. He ruled against me and took one month’s Council pay away from me for firmly representing my constituents, and for the record, I advised Council and Administration I’m not influenced by this action. I am certainly not on Council for the money and to reassure them of this, I told them I will be submitting another month to a charity of my choice prior to the conclusion of my term. I told Council the month’s suspension is still my money and that I wanted it to go to a charitable organization of my choice, in which I directed it to go to the Canadian Arthritis Society in my deceased daughter Priscilla’s name. So, in closing as said I have been advised not to surrender the amount of Tracey Pillion-Abbs separation and I wont, but I can tell you all above mentioned cost considered it is around $265,000 give or take a percentile. Again, look at this picture and ask yourself is this the environment you want to live in and then ask yourself what could you do with this over $265,000 to help fix this if the right decisions were being made. I had asked Council to work with the landlords of our vacant stores and give them tax reprieves if they would open European-style street cafes with awnings sloping off the front of the café, Victorian style furniture and railings with cascading plants. I envision horse and buggies staged downtown taking people around town to enjoy a narrated historical tour of Priscilla the Memorial Spitfire Plane and the Memorial Wall, to the train station, to the Cenotaph, and to all the murals, encompassing a half hour tour. They would then bring them back to view the beautiful cobblestone crosswalks, a beautiful Victorianstyle clock, a completely beautifully enhanced downtown corridor. One of the reason I was given is that downtown retailers would be upset if they lost parking spaces due to the cafes taking a frontal parking spot. REALLY! So, in closing as a Councillor, I’m appalled at these Council decisions and as a taxpayer, I’m sickened. Randy Voakes Councillor Ward#1 Town of Essex Randy Voakes Taxpayer Town of Essex

was a 21-gun salute at Lunenburg. Church bells were rung, and at noon the official proclamation was read to a cheering crowd. Most Nova Scotians felt little reason to celebrate. The history article tells us the Halifax newspaper published a mock obituary that death came to the province by some of her ungrateful sons. It is an interesting report, so if you can get a copy of the magazine, read it for you own interest.

Ag leaders talk trade with U.S. partners by Keith Currie, President, Ontario Federation of Agriculture Over the past three weeks, Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) President Keith Currie travelled across five states with Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Jeff Leal. This trip served to confirm that Ontario and the U.S. share a valuable trade relationship, something both sides of the border agreed on. Leaders of Ontario’s agrifood sector accompanied Minister Leal in meetings with government and agri-food business leaders from Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, New York and Pennsylvania to

discuss trade agreements, and further enhance the relationships between our jurisdictions and countries. OFA’s president was pleased to accompany Minister Leal on the tour, representing Ontario farm businesses. The business relationship and trade agreements between Canada and the U.S., is vital to the economic success of both countries. Every meeting emphasized that greater transparency and ongoing discussions need to happen, and once again, both sides agreed. Recent comments by

U.S. President Trump threatening trade between Canada and the U.S., especially the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), has a lot of farmers and governments worried. The continuation of our free trade agreement is essential to our economy and livelihoods. In 2016, Ontario-U.S. two-way trade in agricultural products was valued at $28.8 billion. Governments, industry and business leaders have engaged in some encouraging discussions with common themes. Both countries

are displaying a desire and need to harmonize the trade rules on food safety to make it easier to move food across our borders. Harmonization of food safety rules is a number one concern for both countries. Ontario food processing representatives also accompanied Minister Leal on this engagement tour. The relationship between farmers as primary food producers and food processors is vital to a healthy food processing and valueadded sector. Ontario is home to one of the most robust food processing and value-added sectors in North America and those food companies rely on a fair trade agreement too. While touring the state of Michigan, Currie spent time with Michigan Farm Bureau colleagues. Meeting with their board of directors and key staff presented opportunities for discussions on respective agriculture

industries, and how OFA and the Michigan Farm Bureau could align future lobbying efforts with our respective governments to push for a more fluid trade relationship between our countries. The visit also revealed opportunities to engage with other Great Lakes states farm organizations to build similar relationships between our organizations. Ontario’s agriculture and agri-food industry is a key economic driver in the province. Maintaining free trade between Ontario and the U.S. is a vital part of ensuring the financial and business success of our industry. Minister Leal reminded us what

“The human touch is that little snippet of physical affection that brings a bit of comfort, support, and kindness. It doesn’t take much from the one who gives it, but can make a huge difference in the one who receives it.” ~ Mya Robarts

an open border means to Ontario businesses – open borders ensure access to customers and allow movement of food products and ingredients back and forth for processing and consumer sales. OFA was proud to be part of this engagement tour, providing insight and first-hand experiences to discussions with our U.S. counterparts. The creation of NAFTA resulted in an open border trade system that is working extremely well for everyone today. Ontario maintains solid trading relationships with our neighboring Great Lakes states and the rest of the U.S. OFA appreciated the hospitality shown and discussions that took place, and anticipate continued trade success and transparency in any future trade discussions and decisions.

ECNPLC reviews past, looks to the future

by Sylene Argent Staff, clients, Board members, and supporters of the Essex County Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic (ECNPLC) gathered inside the Shaheen Community Room at the Essex Centre Sports Complex last Wednesday evening to review the past year of activities and look ahead to the future during the clinic’s Annual

Staff of the ECNPLC.

General Meeting. Current Board President Michael Lavoie noted the Clinic’s sixth annual theme was “Exceeding the Vision.” Though this is his first year as a President of the Board of Directors, he has been a member for many years. The vision to establish a nurse practitioner clinic was shared by a small-group

of individuals, and those members were passionate

about healthcare. What started as a dream, soon

became a reality due to that group’s dedication. Catherine Schooley was one of the clinic’s founders, and has served as Board President for several years. She was recognized for her dedication to the clinic during the AGM as she has decided to retire. “Retiring founding director and past president Catherine Schooley has left me with a very hard act to follow. Her

leadership and vision will long be remembered,” Lavoie stated in the AGM report. Moving ahead, Lavoie said better approaches are always being investigated to improve patient care at the clinic. The clinic client list has grown steadily since its opening. It currently serves around 2600 clients.

Holy Name School Celebrates Grade 8 Graduation

Holy Name’s Valedictorian Avery Pailey addresses the Class of 2017.

by Adam Gault It was an emotional evening for the students of Holy Name Catholic Elementary School as their friends and family gathered to watch them receive their diplomas on Wednesday, June 21.

The students and their families gathered at the Holy Name of Jesus Church in Essex for the ceremony, which was held as a way the students could be congratulated for their academic achievements. It also gave

them a chance to celebrate and reminisce about the strong friendships and social bonds they’ve made with one another over the years before they take the next big step towards high school. Valedictorian Avery Pailey spoke to the importance of the friendships made over the years at Holy Name and the inspiring nature of the school’s teachers as key elements in helping the students of the class of 2017 get to where they are today. “We could not have

done it without the support of our teachers,” Pailey explained. “Sometimes, you do not realize you were making memories, you just knew you were having fun.” Like the closing of any chapter in a person’s life, the end of elementary school comes with a bit of trepidation as students begin to wonder about the experiences high school may bring. “We now wonder how the next four years will change and define who we are once again,” Pailey said. Principal Brian Marenchin offered his congratulations and words of encouragement in his closing remarks to the Class of 2017. “Give a round of applause to those who support you,” Marenchin said, recognizing the tremendous importance of the parents and guardians who’ve helped the students in all their endeavours. “We hope you learn to never stop learning.”

As an unforgettable time as a student of Holy Name Catholic Elementary School was winding down, and with a brand-new chapter

The Voice Of Experience by Evelyn Couch

In the presence of history Have you had the wonderful experience of being in the room where confederation was brought to Canada? It gave me great sense of awe and wonder from the moment I stepped on the worn cement step to the entrance. There were not many steps, only two or three, if I remember correctly, but I do remember that they were worn down with a deep groove. That told me many footsteps had been taken by many people who came to see this historic sight in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. I wonder what percentage of them were visitors other than Canadians. And, I wonder how many footsteps there were to wear down the cement so deeply. The whole building was interesting, not just the room where the Dominion of Canada was formed. Do you remember when we discontinued the term Dominion? I am not certain of the year, but I know it was not very long ago. Now our country has become the home of many nationalities and is known as a desirable place to live. My family, that is the Couch family, thought that sometime around 1800 when my grandfather’s grandfather brought his family here from England.

Craz-E-Crew to Entertain Annual Essex Fun Fest Parade July 8th & July 9th SIX SHOWS! One of the largest extreme sports shows in the world is bigger than ever and ready to thrill millions more. The show has crossed Canada from coast to coast and performed at major fairs, festivals, exhibitions, special events, amusement and theme parks. The team has over 18 years of experience

entertaining for large audiences. All athletes are professional performers and have competed professionally in some of today’s biggest international contests. With this exposure the performers are well known and have made appearances in internationally distributed Alternative Sports Videos and Magazines as well as in Newspapers, Television

and Radio Shows. Audiences will be thrilled by the CrazE-Crew’s interactive stunt shows. Our team performers have all been selected for their experience, talent and attitude and create a good bond with audiences of all kinds by taking time after each performance to answer questions and of course to sign autographs. Here are some of the events and places Craz-E-Crew has performed: • Canada’s Got Talent • Calgary Stampede (several times) • Canadian National Exhibition (several times) • Paramount Canada’s Wonderland, Toronto (several times) • Expo Quebec and more. Learn more about Craz-E-Crew at: www. crazecrew.com.

One of the highlights of the Essex Fun Fest is its annual downtown parade. This year’s date is Saturday, July 8th. The 10:00am parade time is new this year. This year’s theme is the 150th Birthday of Canada. The parade commences at the intersection of Talbot Street (Main Street) and Fairview Avenue and proceeds north along Talbot Street to Maidstone Avenue. The parade welcomes all Marching Musical Groups, Specialty Groups, Commercial Entries, Services Clubs, and Antique Vehicles to participate in the parade. The Essex Fun Fest encourages you be creative with your entry and don’t forget to ensure that your business name or logo is visible. No awards will be handed out this year. To participate in the parade, there is no fee. Deadline to submit your entry is July 4th. For more information, email Jake Morassut at jmorassut@essex.ca.

Return of the Bike Parade New this year is the return of the bike parade. This parade is an opportunity for youngsters to show they live an active lifestyle and ride along with the grand marshall. Thousands of people line the streets of downtown Essex Centre and this is an exciting opportunity for children to become involved. We are looking for children between 5 and 8 years old (born in 2009-2012) and

they must have a parent or guardian to ride along with them. The first 50 registrants will be accepted to participate and we will contact you with further details the week of the parade. We require bike parade participants to be available between 9:30am and 11:00am on July 8, 2017. To register go to: https://townofessex. formbuilder.ca/Bike-Parade-Registration

P.13, provides that where there is an official plan in effect in a local municipality that contains provisions relating to community improvement in the municipality, the council may, by by-law, designate the whole or any part of an area covered by such an official plan as a community improvement project area; AND WHEREAS Section 28(2) of the Planning Act defines a municipality or an area within a municipality, that community improvement of which in the opinion of the council is desirable because of age, dilapidation, overcrowding, faulty arrangement, unsuitability of buildings or for any other environmental, social or community economic development reason;

WHEREAS the Council of the Town of Essex has fulfilled the requirements of Section 28 of the Planning Act, R.S.O. 1990, chapter P.13, as amended; NOW THEREFORE the Colchester Centre Community Improvement Plan Implementation Strategy, June 2017, is hereby adopted and Schedule A attached hereto is declared to be part of this by-law. However, a notice of appeal may be filed in the name of an individual who is a member of the association or the group on its behalf. An appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board in respect of the by-law may be completed by filing with the Clerk of the Town of Essex not later than July 19, 2017, a notice of appeal setting out the objection to the by-law and the reasons in support of the objection accompanied by the required fee of $125 made payable to the Minister of Finance. CARD OF THANKS

_______________________________________________

Card Of T hanks Country Village Health Care Centre has been a ‘cornerstone’ for the Woodslee and surrounding areas for more than four decades. It has served as a “loving home” to many residents, as well as a ‘welcomed environment’ for their families, friends, and visitors throughout the years. It not only has provided outstanding care and compassion to countless people but it has also been one of the most rewarding experiences to its many employees. It was ‘our times’ of working side by side together where some of the most “endearing” friendships amongst co-workers “came to be.” The special relationships that we shared with each other along the way - have been everlasting! These “bonds of friendship,” have been our one ‘common connection’ that has always keep us “close in heart.” On June 2nd, 2017, a celebration was organized. Coworkers, both past and present, were invited to “come together” for a forty-five year ‘Country Village Reunion’! It was an unforgettable evening of laughter, love, and friends. Thank you to everyone, both family and friends, who also came to celebrate my “official retirement” that night. Your beautiful cards, generous gifts, donations, hugs, and good wishes touched my heart so deeply. There are no words that can truly express my feelings of appreciation and gratitude for all your support, kindness, and love. “Special Thanks” to the Essex Legion, Branch 201, for accommodating all of us and to Gail and her Kitchen Staff for providing such a delicious meal. Everyone enjoyed it tremendously! To Angie Mansell, Rose O’Neil, and my daughter, Kelly... it was through all your hard work and efforts that helped make this ‘reunion’ so incredibly successful! Thank you from the “bottom of our hearts” for “bringing all of us together for such a beautiful occasion. The Dear Lord has always blessed me abundantly throughout my lifetime, but when He brought me to Country Village thirty-eight years ago, it would proved to be one of His “greatest blessings of all!” Through Him I received your precious “gifts of friendship.” Something I shall treasure forever. To each, and everyone of you... Thank-you, once more, for touching my life, in so many beautiful ways! Love and Friendship, always. Roni Pinkney

Golf tourney continues to honour the gift of life Two Canadian cars named after Count Frontenac

With cheers and applause from Canada’s 150th Birthday Party still ringing in our ears, we turn to Whitey and Katy Smale of Bala, Ontario, who are the proud owners of a rare piece of Canadian automotive history: “Our 1932 Frontenac E-Deluxe Series 6-70 1932 Frontenac sedan in Bala, Ontario. sedan was built in Leaside, Ontario, by Dominion Motors and sold new for $1065. The car was purchased in Ingersoll in 2008. It was completely restored and is now used within a 10-mile radius of Bala, Ontario, where we live.” Dominion Motors was formed when it broke away from its American parent company, Durant Motors, in 1931. It was building Frontenac, Durant, and Reo motor cars. The Frontenac was named after Count Frontenac, Governor of New France in the late 1600s. On Thursday, September 3, 1931, 100 shiny new 1932 Frontenacs left the Leaside factory to be driven to dealers all over Ontario. Falling sales in the Depression forced the company to close its doors at the end of 1933. In 1960, another car named Frontenac was built in Canada, this time by the Ford Denise Nantais with her 1960 Frontenac at the Essex Railway Motor Company in Oakville. It was the Station All-Ford Car Show, June 9. Mercury equivalent of the compact Ford Falcon, and it was sold through Mercury-Lincoln-Meteor dealers across the country. Like the Frontenac of the early 1930s, it too was named after Count Frontenac. Denise Nantais of Harrow, Ontario, is the proud owner of a 1960 Frontenac 2-door sedan with black primer, wide whitewalls, 3-speed gear shift on the column (“three on the tree”), and a six cylinder under the hood. She saw it for sale near Comber five years ago and bought it. She loves driving it and has taken it on several trips to Sudbury. When these cars were new, all four hubcaps had a red maple leaf in the centre. Alas, the new Frontenac, like the earlier one, was short-lived. It was only produced for 1960, with 9,536 built, then replaced in 1961 by the Mercury Comet. I’m always looking for more stories. Email billtsherk@ sympatico.ca or write Bill Sherk, 25 John St., P.O. Box 255, Leamington, Ont. N8H 3W2.

A Day for a Life golf tournament organizers Eric and Gunther Funkenhauser and Andrew Johnson pose on the green at Kingsville Golf & Country Club last Wednesday.

by Sylene Argent Under blue skies last Wednesday, around 180 golfers took to the greens at Kingsville Golf & Country Club to participate in the 7th annual A Day for a Life golf tournament. The event recognizes Trevor Funkenhauser’s gift of life legacy, and further raises funds

and awareness for organ donation. In 2006, Funkenhauser’s life was cut short at 35-years of age due to endocarditis. He was described as being a devoted and generous individual. Some of his organs were donated to save the lives of three people in need of a transplant. Since his passing, the Funkenhauser’s family has raised nearly $170,000 to support causes linked to raising awareness for organ donation. With the help of Essex’s Andrew Johnson, a family friend, Funkenhauser’s parents, Gunther and Judith, and brother, Eric, organize the annual “A Day for a Life” golf tournament. Johnson, owner of Essex Foodland, not only helps organize the event, but helps supply food and prizes. “We are all here for the same reason, to get people to sign up to be an organ donor,” Johnson said. “We are here to celebrate Trevor, what he did, and the people he helped through organ donation.” According to beadonor.ca, an organ donation can save up to eight lives. There are currently around 1500 individuals on the transplant list in Ontario, waiting for a lifesaving organ.

Community Living Essex County hosts annual AGM and awards ceremony

by Adam Gault Looking to continue to build upon their philosophy of inspiring possibilities and real change, staff members at Community Living Essex County held the 56th annual meeting and awards presentation at the Ciociaro Club in Oldcastle on Tuesday, June 20. The event was held to honour those who continue to overcome obstacles and make a positive impact in all areas of their community. The Bruce Crozier Inspiring Possibilities Memorial Award is awarded to an individual who can keep moving forward and inspire others, despite sometimes facing many obstacles. Living up to all those values and more, Celine Labrecque was named the sixth annual recipient of the award named for the late Essex MPP. Labrecque was born

with very complex challenges and experienced difficulties with speech and coordination. Not letting that slow her down in the slightest, she is now a top-ranked Special Olympian in Women’s Rhythmic Gymnastics and an honorary member of the Windsor Police Service. She also excels at public speaking, and has delivered many inspiring speeches. The Jeremy Hart Memorial Bursary shares its namesake with a late member of Community Living Essex County. Jeremy had hoped to continue his education and find employment, but unfortunately passed away suddenly in 2012. The award is giving in support with his family to an individual looking to fulfill those dreams. This year’s recipient, Kyle Girardin, had worked closely with

Jeremy and exemplified his outstanding work ethic. Girardin looks to complete his education and pursue a career in landscaping. The Kevin McMullan Memorial Award is new for 2017. It was given to an employee of Community Living Essex County who upholds the character and values of the late Kevin McMullan, who passed away last year. Jackie Burney received the award for consistently going above and beyond and exemplifying McMullan’s passion and attitude. McMullan’s wife, Dawn, and daughter, Chelsea, presented the award. Lorne Rocheleau, the special education coordinator for the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board, received the Community Inclusion Award. He was Continued on Page 28
