Whether you are looking for a one-off course, starting a new hobby or advancing your qualifications, you’ll find a range of courses to suit your requirements. From climbing and expeditions through to sailing, first aid and specialist courses for teachers, our range of courses will engage and inspire. Suitable for groups as well as individuals, our courses can be completed for personal or professional reasons. We can also run courses on request for groups, so please get in touch if you would like to discuss this option. Your safety and security is our key priority which is why Essex Outdoors fully complies to the Adventure Activities Licensing Service (AALS) which ensures that activity providers follow good safety management practices.

Additionally, we hold the Adventuremark, the Adventure Activity Industry Advisory Committee’s non-statutory safety scheme. Both of these accreditations mean you can be assured that you are undertaking activities which have been inspected and meet good practice in the adventure activity industry. IMPROVER CLIMBING

This two day Climbing Wall Award training course is designed to give candidates the skills and knowledge needed to supervise novices climbing on indoor or outdoor climbing walls, artificial boulders and towers.

This one day course assesses candidates on their ability to supervise novices during climbing wall activities.

This three hour course allows climbers to boost their skills in climbing.

The assessment is the next step for climbers who have completed the Climbing Wall Award training, or have been granted exemption from training, and are ready to achieve the Climbing Wall Award. Candidates will be tested on their skills, knowledge and suitability in safely supervising climbing on indoor or outdoor climbing walls, artificial boulders and towers.

The course is ideal for those who have already gained climbing experience up to Grade 5 and are aiming to increase their abilities into Grade 6 and beyond.

The course covers the supervision and management of activities such as bouldering, the teaching of basic movement skills and roped climbing. Candidates will be exposed to new ideas and climbing techniques and will have the opportunity to build on their existing skills. Candidates will be eligible for the Climbing Wall Award assessment following this training, after a consolidation period.

LEAD CLIMBING

This two day training course provides the skills needed to supervise novices during single pitch climbing activities.

This two day course assesses candidates on their ability to supervise single pitch rock climbing activities.

This five hour course allows climbers to gain the skills required to lead climb indoors.

It is ideal for anyone in a position of responsibility during single pitch rock climbing. It helps candidates to become capable in providing a high standard of supervision, so that people can experience safe and enjoyable climbing sessions. The training course covers group management, bouldering, top roping, leading, problem avoidance, problem solving, abseiling and more.

The assessment is the next step for candidates who have completed Single Pitch Award training and are ready to achieve the Single Pitch Award. Candidates will be tested on their skills, knowledge and suitability in safely supervising single pitch rock climbing activities.

Lead climbing is an intensive activity that should not be attempted without prior knowledge. This is a hands-on course that is designed to give climbers a thorough understanding of the activity and is delivered in small groups. It covers many aspects of lead climbing on an indoor wall and is ideal for anyone looking to progress their climbing skills or abilities.

The assessment is the next step for candidates who have completed Mountain Leader training and are ready to demonstrate their competency and achieve the Mountain Leader Award. Candidates will be assessed on a combination of technical skills, experience and personal leadership qualities.

Course content will include leadership skills and group management, walking skills, planning a walk, basic mapwork and route finding skills, equipment, hazards, emergency procedures and more. This one day training course provides candidates with the safety and rescue skills needed to paddle safely and deal with common emergencies in a sheltered water environment.

This one day course provides a clear stepping-stone to becoming a paddler in both canoes and kayaks.

This five day course equips candidates with the paddlesport skills needed to confidently paddle in canoes and kayaks on flat water.

The course forms the foundations of safety and rescue throughout all BCU qualifications. It provides paddlers with the knowledge to ensure the safety of themselves and others. Course content includes boat-based rescues and candidates will use canoes and kayaks most relevant to their normal coaching environment. Training covers as many craft as possible, including canoes and kayaks.

Covering the essentials of paddlesports, candidates will receive coaching on a range of paddling skills and techniques. The emphasis of the course is on learning correct safe practice as well as enjoyment, leaving paddlers in a fantastic position to get more from their time on the water. This two day course equips experienced individuals with the skills needed to provide safety or support cover to a range of craft.

This three day course, with one day assessment, is for any experienced powerboat helm who is looking to teach the RYA Powerboat Scheme.

This course provides a practical introduction to boat handling including a basic understanding of powerboating and explores key aspects such as launching and recovering a boat from a road trailer, everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment. The course builds on the knowledge gained in Level 1 and is ideal for those looking to further develop skills in powerboating. The course covers a number of rescue techniques and elements of race management and mark laying. This is a Stage 2 course that builds on the dinghy sailing abilities gained in Stage 1. Candidates will discover new skills while building confidence in a wide range of sailing techniques, such as rope work and collision avoidance. After completing this course, candidates are expected to be able to track and control boat speed, understand basic principles and be well on the way to being a confident small boat sailor.

This course aims to teach candidates a wide range of sailing skills in dinghy sailing and builds on the knowledge gained in Stage 1 and Stage 2. It is also the equivalent to Level 2 in the National Sailing Scheme. The course will cover many intermediate sailing skills such as rigging, launching and sailing in different directions.

This CEVNI course allows candidates to demonstrate they hold the knowledge required by law to sail on any of the inland waterways on the European Continent.

This RYA Day Skipper course is designed to equip candidates with the knowledge required to confidently navigate around familiar waters by day.

This two day course, or one day assessment, provides boaters with the essential skills and knowledge to helm a vessel safely on inland waterways.

This one day course will give the knowledge and skills required to understand the correct procedures when operating a marine radio.

Signs, rules and procedures for navigating many of the European inland waterways will all be covered within this course. On passing the CEVNI test at the end of the course, the Inland category on the candidate’s International Certificate of Competence (ICC) is validated, indicating that they have the required knowledge of the traffic regulations applicable on inland waters.

With a focus on navigation and seamanship theory, this course is designed to help candidates unravel the mysteries of navigation, pilotage, passage planning and meteorology. The course provides a comprehensive introduction to cruising for inexperienced skippers and teaches pilotage, navigation, seamanship and boat handling. The course will also include a basic knowledge of lights to introduce sailors to night cruising.

The course is ideal for first timers, as well as more seasoned skippers, who are looking to cruise the UK’s inland waterways or Europe’s extensive network of lakes, rivers and canals.

A marine radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. The course is for anyone who owns a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio. Nationally recognised and OFQUAL regulated, this course is suitable for anyone involved in delivering or taking part in outdoor activities including DofE leaders, outdoor instructors and Expedition or RYA award holders. This is a hands-on course that combines a mixture of practical and theoretical learning. The course content will cover a range of outdoor first aid and emergency situations where an ambulance might not be readily available, including bleeding, minor injuries, fractures, stroke and more.

The course prepares individuals with the knowledge to be able to deal with first aid situations at work, while confidently fulfilling the role of workplace first aid representative. It is recommended for anyone who needs a little more than the basic knowledge and skills to act confidently in every day first aid situations. For example, dealing with fractures, hypothermia, hyperthermia and more.

The course is Ofsted approved and is ideal for anyone who has a responsibility to look after children in a variety of work and leisure environments. Candidates can expect to gain the knowledge and skills required to deal with medical and emergency situations involving infants and children, such as unconsciousness, choking, head injuries, burns and more.

This six hour course provides the essential skills needed to confidently deliver first aid in a boating environment.

Bespoke First Aid is designed to be as flexible and directed as required.

This practical half day or full day course gives candidates the knowledge and skills required to perform safe manual handling.

The course explores a range of first aid situations and is ideal for anyone who may be required to undertake emergency first aid procedures on inland waters, rivers, estuaries or on cross channel passages. This is a hands-on course that combines a mixture of practical and theoretical learning. Course content will cover areas such as the recovery position in a confined space, CPR including the drowning protocol, cold shock and hypothermia, seasickness and dehydration, medical assistance or advice by VHF and helicopter rescue.

Our highly trained first aid instructors can tailor first aid courses to the need of your industry or workplace. These can be based on any course such as Outdoor First Aid, Basic Life Support or even the full First Aid at Work. Each of these courses will be designed with you in mind and will provide the necessary expansion on the areas of risk that are most appropriate to your environment. This one day course provides expedition assessors with the knowledge needed to ensure that their expeditions meet the DofE’s conditions and requirements.

This one day training course provides expedition supervisors with an understanding of their role and the skills required to ensure they can deliver a high quality expedition experience for all young people.

This is a national training route to becoming an accredited expedition assessor. It covers the role of a DofE expedition assessor, the ‘seven steps’ to assessment and recent changes to the award conditions and requirements. The course is ideal for DofE workers wishing to progress to the role of expedition assessor and DofE leaders who require reaccreditation. This course aims to increase confidence and skills in delivering the curriculum in an outdoor setting.

The course updates candidates so that they can continue to approve, monitor and support their school in delivering high quality off-site visits. Course content will cover the role and responsibilities of the EVC, safe working practice, risk management and the importance of developing an establishment specific visit policy.

The course is ideal for teachers, leaders and instructors who would like to lead off-site visits that meet employers’ policies. Candidates will gain an understanding of the five core messages set out in the OEAP Handbook for Visit Leaders. The course includes a combination of group work and demonstration. Course content includes risk management, visit policies, effective visit planning, duty of care and more.

The course is ideal for class teachers and support staff who want to be able to successfully deliver a range of exciting and inspirational outdoor learning activities to young people. The course explores the 50 Outdoor Learning Cards. Course content includes the benefits of outdoor learning, its link to the curriculum, practical sessions on how to use the resource cards and how activities can benefit young people of all ages and abilities.

This OEAP recognised course provides training to meet the needs of staff that support school visit emergencies.

The course is ideal for class teachers and support staff who would like to build on their abilities to deliver a range of exciting and inspirational learning activities in an outdoor setting. It provides practical sessions and introduces many inspirational activities, exploring the 25 Environmental Learning Cards. It also covers the benefits of environmental outdoor learning and how activities can benefit young people of all ages and abilities.

The course provides ideas and materials that will help establishments improve and develop their own emergency planning relating to visits and will support the work of EVCs. Course content will improve awareness of national and local emergency policies and procedures, provide a framework for analysing and improving establishment procedures for dealing with visit emergencies and enable emergency contacts to provide better support to Visit Leaders in the event of a visit emergency.

This one day Visit Leader Training for expeditions/ fieldwork/charitable projects will help teachers who organise an overseas visit to gain an understanding of what this involves and the resources available to help.

NATIONAL WATER SAFETY MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME

This one day course develops the experience of snowsport leaders so that they are able to plan and organise safe and enjoyable snowsports visits.

This course gives candidates the skills they need to be able to confidently run Forest School sessions with children.

The course is nationally recognised and is ideal for those who are required to lead a snowsport visit or are acting as a responsible member of staff during the visit.

The course provides practical training in many areas of Forest School and gives the opportunity for teachers to either improve existing skills or to learn new ones. It will explore teaching methods and the use of skills so that candidates’ Forest School sessions can be enjoyed by all participants. Course content includes the use of tools, foraging, fire-lighting and shelter building. Mentoring and twilight training sessions are also available.

The National Water Safety Management Programme equips anyone working in and around water with the essential knowledge and required skills to manage water safety. The programme is ideal for anyone who works with children, young people and adults in dynamic UK or overseas environments. It is recommended for those who are required to operate safely in a water-based environment and need to develop personal safety skills.

Candidates will gain a clear understanding of the roles and responsibilities involved with high risk activity visits. Course content includes leading a ski visit safely, responsibly and efficiently, the educational benefits, risk management and visit planning.
