Who we are Another Country makes contemporary craft furniture and accessories. Our designs are inspired by archetype, calling on the familiar and unpretentious forms of British Country kitchen style, Shaker, traditional Scandinavian and Japanese woodwork for inspiration. We believe in good design, longevity, sustainability and quality at fair prices.

How we work We make use of traditional and modern craft techniques, endeavour to produce our product and run our business in a sustainable and responsible manner, and design our products to last. Every aspect of what we do is considered; from how we design to how we manufacture (in the UK and Europe), pack, and ship. Our timber is sourced from responsible suppliers in the UK, Europe and the US and our upholstery is made in Devon from organic materials.

Series One

Series One is the signature collection with which we launched our brand in 2010. Hard wearing, archetypal and suitable for both domestic and project use, Series One is our most popular and most universal range of furniture.

Stool One

Bar Stool One

The design of our bar stool has grown (quite literally) from the little three-legged Series One stool that informed the design direction of our first collection. Made of solid oak, it has three turned legs that are attached to the seat using a peg system that provides the stool with a handsome, craft-inspired detail. Solid brass foot rests at three different heights provide a comfortable perch for your feet, no matter your height. The black lacquered versions are made of solid ash.

This three-legged stool is our take on a familiar seating archetype. Its simple, hard-working form has informed the style and manufacture of our entire first collection of furniture: Series One. Made from solid oak, its three turned legs are attached to the seat using a peg system, which is visible on the seat and provides the stool with a handsome craft-inspired detail. The lacquered versions are made of solid ash and employ a peg-less screw leg system.

Bench One / Back

Series One

Our Bench One and Bench One Back are triumphs of versatility and functionality, they look great alongside our Series One Dining Table or on their own as an occasional seating or resting place for your magazine collection (we’ve made sure its depth of 350mm is just the right size for such a job) or in combination with the Series One dining table. The oak version of the bench features the distinctive Series One peg detail on the bench seat whilst the lacquered version is made of solid ash and features our (peg-less) screw leg system.

Another Chair

Series One

Another Chair is a versatile, comfortable and hardworking seating solution. The familiar aesthetic and craft-based construction of a traditional alpine chair has been refined, resulting in a design that is truly ‘contemporary craft’. It works well as a reliable kitchen chair though Another Chair is elegant enough for your dining room or study too. The construction combines traditionally wedged sections of solid timber with thin plywood shells and is therefore light yet strong and durable. It is a companion design for our Series One furniture and works especially well with Dining Table One and Desk One and will hold its own in a hardworking contract environment.

Hardy Chair

Series One

Old Furniture, a poem by Dorset born Thomas Hardy, is an ode to beauty of furniture being handed down the generations, and David Irwin’s Hardy Chair is a classic in the making. Two chair typologies from the 19th century, Thomas Hardy’s birth century, inspired its award winning, contemporary design: firstly the Captain’s chair originally a low-backed wooden armchair and secondly, the Smokers bow, a low back Windsor, often used in smoking rooms, public houses, barbers shops and cottages.

Side Table One was introduced due to popular demand for a well-proportioned, functional occasional table that can be employed as the perfect sofa companion or, even, as a cafe side table. This time, the elongated form is the perfect partner for your sofa. The solid wood and generous proportions mean you can pile Coffee Table One Rectangular high with books, magazines, photographs or coffee of course. Day Bed One

Series One

Generous, comfortable and superbly stylish, our Daybed One is a chic but practical piece of furniture. In the daytime use for lounging and additional seating and at night as a put-me-up (the daybed shares the proportions of a standard single bed) for guests who just don’t want to go. The base of our daybed is made from solid oak (or ash when lacquered) and shares the same screw leg system as our larger pieces of furniture. The daybed’s mattress is 100% organic and made for us by Naturalmat of Devon. It has a latex core wrapped in coir and wool and is upholstered in beautiful 100% wool Bute fabric with a six- button detail. The mattress meets Crib 5 commercial requirements and has natural fire retardant properties. The mattress is shown opposite in a grey Bute Turnberry fabric.

Sofa One / Armchair One

Series One

Taking our ever-popular daybed as a starting point, our sofa and corresponding armchair offer a stylish and elegant seating solution. Sofa One, with its removable cushions, is also a great put me up for guests. Both items are made of a solid oak frame with upholstery made from organic, natural and recycled materials from our Devon-based supplier Naturalmat. Shown here upholstered in Clyde Bute fabric.

Our Series Two Bar Stool is as comfortable as it is good-looking. It has more than a passing family resemblance to the Series Two Stool from which it takes it characteristic generous seat and gently angled legs. Both these beautiful benches are expertly crafted. Seating Bench Two can be used as occasional seating, in a hallway, lounge, or at the foot of a bed, and is otherwise designed to be used in combination with the Series Two Dining Table. This bench like most designs in Series Two, uses a flat-pack system of construction making it easy to ship and store. A recent addition to our Series Two collection is Bench Back Two which offers a little more comfort and comes in either an ash/walnut finish (with ash seat and back and walnut legs & back posts) or entirely in walnut.

At the heart of our Sleep Series is this generous, sturdy bed frame. The frame is constructed from pale ash with brushed brass feet and the generous headrest is covered in a soft natural linen, providing comfort and creating a clean silhouette. This handsome piece of furniture is a fine storage solution with plenty of space for linens, clothes or toys. Traditionally placed at the bottom of a bed but, we think, useful employed anywhere in your bedroom. Like all pieces in our Sleep Series, the chest combined pale ash with brushed brass details to beautiful effect. We’ve made a feature of one further function – the chest is lockable with a charming brass lock and key. Another Country’s first collection of bedroom furniture is inspired by the functional forms, clean lines and enduring craftsmanship of Shaker furniture.

The first of our Sleep Series drawers is a slim, elegant Tallboy. This endlessly useful piece of furniture provides maximum storage with minimum fuss. The Tallboy uses traditional wooden runners for it’s five drawers and further authentic craft detailing comes in the way of beautiful dovetail joints on each drawer. A small upright on the top of the Tallboy is a pleasing take on a traditional detail and charming brass escutcheon and key is the only decorative embellishment in this paired back design - and a functional one at that. Another Country’s first collection of bedroom furniture is inspired by the functional forms, clean lines, and enduring craftsmanship of Shaker furniture.

Simply a wall-mountable version of our Bedside Table Two, featuring a well proportioned space for storage and the same beautiful construction details common to our entire Sleep Series. Two keyhole fixings on the back of this piece allow it to be mounted to the wall on only two screws.

This neat side table combines function with aesthetic appeal. Dovetail joints provide attractive craft detail whilst brushed brass hardware and feet give subtle material interest. All the drawers in the Sleep Series use traditional wooden runners for an authentic construction and the Bedside Table is no different. Inspired by Finnish sauna buckets, Japanese rice barrels and that staple of farmyards everywhere; the simple wooden pail, our Series Two Bucket is an exercise in functional design. Straight sides and a generous scale make the bucket contemporary and enable it to move indoors where it can be used to store firewood, newspapers, collect shoes or gather toys. With its easy-on-the-eye form, solid construction and beautiful oiled beech finish, this table is for more than just meal times. The table’s trestle base and multifunctional form is a nod towards the utility forms of industrial furniture. Equally, we imagine this ample table being used in kitchens or workspaces alike, in commercial or domestic locations. The table has two distinct parts; a trestle base and solid top. The joint where these two meet is a working detail we have chosen to keep visible and celebrate. A splash of colour, if you choose it, is the only decoration that this essential piece of furniture needs.

Day Bed Four

Series

When we launched our Day Bed One in 2010 we ushered in a renaissance of this item of furniture and five years later our latest Day Bed Four follows in that tradition. A day bed is hugely versatile; employ it as a temporary put me up, a seat, a work station, a nap station or a reading station, or place in a gallery as the perfect art watching perch. Day Bed Four shares the base design and Rietveld-inspired leg detailing that typifies the Series Four range and as with all our upholstery, the mattress and bolster (which, unlike its Series One and Two siblings is not piped and has no buttons) are produced by Naturalmat in Devon from organically certified & sustainable materials and upholstered in Kvadrat Tonica fabric.

Pottery Series This set of tabletop pottery employs different clay bodies with different properties for each type of vessel and its particular use Independently, each individual object has multiple functions and together the series is intended to fulfill all basic tableware needs. The forms of the pottery draw inspiration from the Series One furniture collection and are dictated by the most logical solutions for use and manufacture whilst the clay bodies are each tactile and hardworking. Pieces in the Another Pottery series include a terracotta Pitcher and Serving Bowl, creamy stoneware Dinner Plate, Side Plate, Big Bowl, Little Bowl, Mug, Cup and Creamer and a black clay Pinch Pot.

This family of desk objects is made up of individual, but compatible, objects that each fulfill a specific task: A tall Pencil Pot to hold all writing ephemera, a Sharpener Pot that neatly collects your shavings, a Tape Dispenser with utilitarian brass serrated arm and, lastly, a small container; Eraser Pot, for all your loose bits, with a particularly handy lid in the form of a large eraser.

This covetable set of accessories will make sure any table or desktop is looking its best. Made from solid maple and using swathes of brass to stunning effect, the series includes a stackable paper tray and two different pen and pencil holders. These beautifully crafted pieces are desktop architecture, designed to punctuate your workstation with a hint of something special.

Ceramic Candlesticks

Soft Series

This family of candlesticks is both charming and useful. Their neat ceramic lids lift to reveal a concealed box, perfect for hiding away or keeping belongings safe. The lid sits atop a turned oak base with handle – our take on the classic ‘wee willie winkie’ candlesticks. The candlesticks are available in three sizes: Small, Medium and Large.

Our Soft Series is made from an exceptionally beautiful and intricately woven jacquard fabric. Featuring an original graphic pattern, our blankets are large and warm, our square cushions soft yet supportive whilst our smaller rectangular cushions add a cheerful splash of colour wherever it’s required. Also available by the metre for upholstery projects. Woven in Suffolk by Gainsborough Silk Weavers.
