US-MEXICO BORDER FALL 2013 RESEARCH COLLABORATION: JESSICA DEAVER CRITIC: MATTHEW JOHNSON BIOCAPAS IS A NETWORK OF EDUCATION AND RESEARCH FACILITIES MAPPED ACROSS SEVERAL VITAL ECO ZONES IN BIG BEND AND SIERRA DEL CARMEN. CONNECTED ACROSS HUNDREDS OF MILES WITH OPEN AIR SKYWALKS, THESE FACILITIES WORK IN PARTNERSHIP TO DEVELOP CROSS BORDER RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN STUDENTS, TEACHERS, SCIENTISTS AND ECO-TOURISTS. ECO REG IS A REGENERATIVE GREENHOUSE SITED ALONG THE BORDER OF NORTHERN COAHUILA AND TEXAS NEAR BLACK GAP WILD MANAGEMENT AREA. THE BUILDING IS COMPOSED OF A SERIES OF PODS THAT ALLOW FOR ACCOMMODATION OF PROGRAM THROUGH THE USE OF PANELS IN VARIENCES OF TRANSPARENCY.
SPOFFORD COMMUNITYEXCHANGE MARKET HUNTS POINT NEIGHBORHOOD, SOUTH BRONX, NY FALL 2014 CRITIC: JOHN TSAI THE HUNTS POINT PENNINSULA IS HOME TO THE HUNTS POINT FOOD DISTRIBUTION CENTER, ONE OF THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD. NESTLED IN A NEIGHBORHOOD THAT DOES NOT HAVE EASE OF ACCESS TO THE GOODS DISTRIBUTED BY THE CENTER, THE SPOFFORD FOOD EXCHANGE IS A MARKET THAT ATTEMPTS TO PROVIDE GARDENS, OFFICES, AND SPACES WHERE THE COMMUNITY OF HUNTS POINT WILL BE ABLE TO EXCHANGE SERVICES. THE MARKET WILL PROVIDE A LOW INCOME, INDUSTRIALIZED NEIGHBORHOOD WITH FOOD ACCESSIBILITY AND COMMUNITY SPACES IN ORDER TO BRING PROSPERITY, COMMUNITY REVITALIZATION AND POSITIVE TRANSFORMATION TO THE SITE.

MODULAR BEACH URBAN SPACE BARCELONA, SPAIN SPRING 2012 COLLABORATION WITH JUAN GUERRA CRITIC: JORDI MANSILLA MODULAR BEACH IS AN INTERVENTION IN THE POBLENOU DISTRICT OF BARCELONA. THROUGH THE DESIGN OF A SUSTAINABLE MODULAR ROOF SYSTEM, PUBLIC SPACE IN THE FORM OF RECREATIONAL WATER ATTRACTIONS IS CREATED IN THE CENTER OF AN URBAN CITY CONTEXT. THE SITE IS LOCATED IN AN EIXAMPLE BLOCK LOCATED BETWEEN THE STREETS OF CARRER DE PALLARS AND CARRER DE PUJADES IN THE POBLENOU. OUR INTERVENTION WAS SITUATED IN THE INTERIOR OF THE BLOCK. A NEW ROOF SYSTEM WAS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE PUBLIC SPACE THROUGH THE PLACEMENT OF THE PROGRAM AND THE CIVIC CENTER, AND AS A RESOURCE THAT TAKES SUSTAINABLE ELEMENTS SUCH AS SUNLIGHT AND RAINWATER COLLECTION AND INTEGRATING THOSE FEATURES IN A DYNAMIC WAY.

REPRESENTATION OF PEDESTRIAN TRAJECTORY LINES RESULTING FROM THE CREATION OF THE PHYSICAL MODEL.
A MODULE WAS DESIGNED WITH GEOMETRIC QUALITIES THAT ALLOW FOR RAINWATER TO BE BOTH COLLECTED AND STORED.
PLACEMENT OF THE MODULE WAS REPEATED THROUGHOUT THE ROOF SYSTEM AND ADJUSTED TO THE DIFFERENT SIZES AND AREAS OF THE EXISTING WAREHOUSES.
WATER COLLECTION THE MODULES ARE EFFICIENT IN COLLETCTING RAIN WATER AND WILL BE ABLE TO DISTRIBUTE THE WATER TO THE SURROUNDING BLOCK.
PIPING SYSTEM THE MODULES ARE CONNECTED THROUGH A PIPING SYSTEM COLLECTING THE WATER IN THE CENTER.

MORANDE 707 HOUSING SANTIAGO, CHILE SUMMER 2014 CRITIC: RAFAEL LONGORIA EXPLORING THE CHALLENGE OF BUILDING IN A HISTORIC AND DELICATE SETTING, MORANDE 707 IS A HOUSING PROPOSAL LOCATED IN SANTIAGO’S HISTORIC CENTER. THE SITE IS SITUATED ON THE CORNER OF MORANDE AND ROSAS STREET, IN AN AREA NEAR THE HISTORIC MERCADO CENTRAL. THE MIXED USE HOUSING CONSISTS OF GROUND, LEVEL RETAIL SPACES, THAT CATER TO THE NEIGHBORING FABRIC, WHILE THE APARTMENTS SPACES ARE DESIGNED TO BE TWO-BEDROOM UNITS WITH A POSSIBILITY FOR RENTING OUT AN INDEPENDENT ROOM. THIS PROJECT ATTEMPTS TO ENHANCE AN ECONOMIC AN SOCIAL OPPORTUNITY FOR THE CENTRAL NEIGHBORHOOD OF SANTIAGO, WHILE BLENDING INTO THE HISTORIAL URBAN FABRIC OF THE OLD CITY.

WAGNER THE LACUNAS ARE INTERNATIONAL STUDENT HOUSING IN THE NORTHGATE DISTRICT IN COLLEGE STATION, TX. THE PROJECT INTENTION INVOLVES THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT THAT SATISFIES CULTURAL, SOCIAL AND LIVING NEEDS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS. THE LACUNAS INTRODUCES THE VOID, OR LACUNA AS A WAY TO IMPLEMENT SOCIAL INTERACTION IN A SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT. THROUGH A SERIES OF SHIFTS, MULTIPLE VOIDS ARE CREATED TO ALLOW FOR VARYING AMBIENCES. THE DYNAMIC TRANSLATION OF THE SHIFTS OFFER AN INVITING ATMOSPHERE AND INTEGRATION WITH ITS RESIDENTS THROUGH THE VARIOUS AMENITIES SUCH AS THE GARDEN AREAS AND STUDY ROOMS CREATED BY THE VOIDS.

COLLEGE STATION, TX SPRING 2013 STUDIO DESIGN-BUILD PROJECT CRITIC: MARK ODOM TINY HOUSE IS A PULL-OUT HOUSE DESIGNED TO MAXIMIZE ITS LIVING AREAS AND ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF THE SPACES. OUR DESIGN INTENT IS TO HAVE A SMALL HOUSE BUT NOT A SMALL SPACE. THROUGH THE USE OF MATERIALS, TINY HOUSE PROVIDES A CONNECTION TO NATURE AND IS A PLAY ON LIGHT VS. HEAVY. THE USE OF WOOD PROVIDES A FEEL OF WARMTH AS ITS USE ALSO TRANSLATES TO THE INTERIOR OF THE HOUSE. THE POLYCARBONATE PANELS ALLOW FOR TRANSPARENCY AND EFFICIENT USE OF DAYLIGHTING. A GRASS WALL REPRESENTS THE IDEA OF A GREEN SURFACE WHICH WOULD SERVE TO NATURALLY COOL THE HOUSE. FINALLY, THE CORRUGATED METAL WRAPS AROUND THE HOUSE IN A WAY WHICH SHELTERS AND PROTECTS ITS IDENTITY. THE TINY HOUSE WAS CONSTRUCTED OVER A PERIOD OF TEN WEEKS. IT IS CURRENTLY LOCATED AT THE TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY ARCHITECTURE RANCH IN COLLEGE STATION.
