BUENOS AIRES Majesty & Immensity

BUENOS AIRES

MIN: 3 NIGHTS

From those statements made by the Mexican writer Rosario Castellanos, majesty and immensity are the perfect adjectives which accurately describe the fulfilling experience Buenos Aires offers to the world. From Tango nights in San Telmo to endless walks under a starry sky in Puerto Madero. Beyond Tango, wine and meat, Buenos Aires also tells the story of a Latin American and cosmopolitan city with its numerous French buildings and Italian dishes. After the 2001 economic crisis, Buenos Aires reemerged as a low cost chic destination, where the biggest fashion stores and lifestyle placed it as Argentina’s most classic and avant garde town. Although considered the “South American Paris”, Buenos Aires is a city where the dream ends and a world of gastronomy, art, dance, theatre, music and movies begin.

Argentina’s vision is similar to the one of Río de la Plata: huge in width and large but moving with such majesty that it seems motionless.

Best time to go: All year long. Winter: The weather is very cold just like in any other ski resort; however, this city not only offers excellent ski slopes and different ways of going up for skiers but also provides a great variety of options for non-skiers. We recommend not to travel in July, if possible, given that this is the highest season (100% of the accommodation running and extremely high fees) for the South American countries winter holidays. Rest of the year: You will find better temperatures than in winter and the activities are the same. The landscapes vary according to the season. Best time to go: All year long. Summer: It is considered the high season based on the large number of visitors. The climate is dry and rains are not frequent. Sun rises at 5:30am and doesn’t set until 11pm. Fall: The climate is cooler and low season starts after Holy Week. This is an excellent time to travel given the lower cost hotel fees. Winter: It is wise to remember that this time of the year makes it impossible to take some tours such as “Minitrekking” or “Big ice”. In spite of that, the glaciers can be seen given their unchanging behavior along the year. Spring: From September onwards temperature starts to rise and snow to disappear. The contrast of the glaciers and the blossoming plants are worth watching.

Perito Moreno Glacier

Glacier Trekking

Boat Cruise

An imposing mass of ice surrounded by endless forests and mountains.

Cracks and marvel at the different hues of the ice in this natural wonder.

Get up closer than you would ever imagine to the largest glaciers.

What to wear Trekking shoes are recommendable if you are considering taking a walk, the “Minitrekking” or “Big Ice”. As for clothing, if you travel in summer the morning and afternoon may be cold being 2pm the hottest time of the day; that is why it is better to wear light clothes you can get rid of as temperature gets higher instead of one single jacket which will not allow you to control the body temperature. For the glacier tour it is recommended to carry a windbreaker to face the frozen wind. Finally, we suggest you to carry enough clothes in winter due to the fact that this part of Patagonia is located in a latitude which is similar to the one in London, at the Northern hemisphere.

Must See / Do » Take the Perito Moreno glacier tour. » Walk with trampons over the Perito Moreno Glacier (tour “Minitrekking” or “Big Ice”). » Taste Patagonian lamb (cooked in the sword with fire during many hours) » Taste the “calafate”; typical fruit from the region which was named after it.

How long do you need? 2 nights minimum in order to have a full day. We, however, recommend 3 nights. » The first day we suggest you to visit the Perito Moreno Glacier and take the “Minitrekking” or “Big Ice” optional tours. In case you don’t want to walk on the ice we suggest you to take the one-hour “Safari Náutico” tour which allows you to watch the Perito Moreno’s south wall. This sailing is included in both trekking tours over the glacier. » The following day we suggest you to take the “Todo Glaciares” tour or a visit to a ranch in the Patagonian steppe. During the first tour you will be able to see only three glaciers which can only be gazed at from the water, sailing Lago Argentino. The same sailing is done in the second one but you descend in a Patagonian ranch where you get in a 4x4 and observe the Upsala Glacier from the top. » Should you have a complete day we recommend El Chaltén (national capital of trekking) tour or Torres del Paine in Chile. If you visit this area in winter, we suggest you to take the “Winter Experience”; which includes different snow activities travelling in a 4x4.

Ushuaia is a city you need to visit at least four times to really get to know it. Landscapes change dramatically along the four seasons. Summer allows you to make a big number of outdoor activities and has the nicest weather. Besides, it is the time with more daylight hours: 19 hours approximately. Winter has only seven to eight daylight hours but days can be clear and light. During the fall the trees drop their leaves getting an ocher, copper, pink, red and orange-colored shade. Spring is particularly appealing for blossoming plants and gardens.

What to wear You should wear heavy clothes as in the rest of the Andean Patagonia; bear in mind that this is the snowy season and therefore a very cold one. If you are thinking of making a snow-related activity we recommend waterproof clothing (specially footwear). If possible we recommend “Gore-Tex” shoes. During summer, cold weather is not so hard although the western wind may cause many cool days. You should carry warm clothes though it is summertime.

The White Desert combines mystery with majesty. Its rough and deserted mountains, ice floe and glacier lengths together with the inhospitable landscape, make this unknown land to be a powerful adventure traveler, explorer and researcher magnet. Leaving Ushuaia and sailing through the Drake Passage and Cabo de Hornos it is possible to watch the incredible fauna in its environment. From southern spring onwards Antarctica becomes home to an extraordinary wild life which transforms it in a wonderful penguin, sea wolves, whales and birds ecosystem.

In order to start this journey you must leave the cities modern and cosmopolitan appearances behind to welcome one of the planet’s richest and less explored postcards.

Best time to go: November - December: Squids, fishes, birds, seals, sea wolves, sea elephants and whales can be seen. Daylight hours are longer during this period. Also, the remains of frozen water make it possible for a spectacular sailing through the ice, where you may watch different types of seals leaning on the ice formations. January - February: Most of the penguin chicks leave their protecting eggs in January, first in South Shetland Islands and then at the south of the peninsula. This frantic colony activity goes on in February when the youngsters start to grow and gather in the nurseries. The ice withdrawal in February allows to explore the Antarctic peninsula even souther. March: The night darkness starts as the sun hides beyond the southern horizon. Whale Watching

Icebergs and Glaciers

Cruises

The largest animal ever known to have existed appears on a grand scale.

A unique record of the Earth’s past climate.

Thousands of penguins and icebergs that dwarf even the largest mega-ships.

What to wear Bring adequate luggage as if you were going to ski. Thermal waterproof trousers, fleece jackets, waterproof gloves and snow jackets should be there. You do not have to worry about footwear; you will receive a pair of special boots which are disinfected every time you get on and off the ship so as not to damage the ecosystem. You may also bring your own boots. If so, we recommend ordinary rubber boots up to the knee for disembark. They must be from 35 to 40cm high (circa 13.77” to 15.74”) with a strong Edge and a nonslip sole. Snow or leather boots are inappropriate. Fleece shirts and sweaters are also good insulating garments. We recommend you to wear different layers of wool, silk or synthetic clothing over cotton. Do not forget sun block and sun glasses. It is a good idea to bring a bagpack and plastic bags (Ziploc type) to protect your cameras from the splash during landings.

Must See / Do » Swimming in the Antarctic sea! In Decepción Island boiling water emerges from the bottom of the sea at a few metres from the coast shaping natural pools which allow the traveler to swim first in Antarctica’s frozen water and then get warmer in the thermal waters. » Watch a leopard seal hunting penguins. » Gaze at the icebergs in their various sizes and shapes. » Get closer and take a picture with some penguins, which are very curious animals. As we have previously mentioned you will be able to watch four different species from which three only live in Antarctica.

Expedition traveler profile Travelling to Antarctica is a once in a Lifetime experience. The best recommended way of visiting it is on board exploration ships. Those ships are considerably smaller than the typical tourism cruises. They approximately carry between 50 to 60 passengers and between 20 to 30 crew members. The smaller size allows them to get into and sail Antarctica’s bays and channels, get closer to the coast and maneuver easily on the ice; this would not be possible with bigger ships. Do not mistake this destination with the ones of Australis and Skorpios Cruises which although being exploration ships, have an only journey through the South American continent. Those who choose this tour are not looking for the typical cruise life (nighlife, casino, pool, etc.) but exploring and getting to know Antarctica. In this case, the ship becomes a means to do it. The dress code is informal. This trip lasts ten days leaving Ushuaia’s port and returning to the same destination. Crossing Drake’s Passage (a sea strait which separates the American continent from Antarctica) lasts one and a half days, which means that you have seven full days for the expedition. It is wise to mention that Antarctica is not only a vast ice length; this is one of the planet’s richest areas in terms of sea fauna and flora. You will be able to observe four different penguin species, three whale species (Hunched, Minke and Southern Right), sea wolves, sea elephants, orcas and different bird species. During these journeys you can make from two to three daily descents (depending on the weather conditions) which are already included in the fee, which means you do not have to pay each time you participate on an exploration or “landing”. Those descents are made on “zodiac” boats; these are perfect boats due to their versatility to sail on these waters and reach the shore for the disembarking. The descents can be made to visit a penguin colony, a human base or an old whale settlement. There may also be a zodiac expedition without a landing to watch a group of swimming whales or gaze at the icebergs from close range. Two of the companies we recommend are based in Argentina and Chile respectively, which is why most of the crew and guides have the same nationality thus allowing the language on board, besides English, is Spanish.

Before reaching the first balcony, you will observe the plate with the statement of World Heritage of Mankind, granted by the UNESCO in 1981; and farther on, two informative stands about glacier processes and the formation of the Perito Moreno in particular. Every viewpoint offers a new perspective. From the entrance of the footbridge area, there is a distance of 400 meters to the lowest

balcony, the closest to the front of the glacier. The intermediate balcony is the best place to appreciate the northern area of the glacier with a good sight of the Canal de los Témpanos and towards the left of this viewpoint is the second balcony, right opposite the glacier. Even if the largest glaciers in the Park are the Viedma and the Upsala, the Perito Moreno is a large sized glacier located only 200 meters over sea level, which enables to reach its very front easily, not like the other glaciers, which can only be accessed after trekking or sailing for a while. The Perito Moreno is the only glacier that maintains its balance, that is to say, all the ice mass it receives from its source basin in the winter is gradually lost in its front during the summer. We will also do Minitrekking Tour over the glacier: We will sail during 20 minutes till we arrive in the Southern side of the glacier and descended along an improvised staircase. After a brief chat in the shelter to coordinate the excursion, we will start the hiking, first across a little forest of lengas and ñires and then along the border of the lake to the edge of the ice.The guides will give you a full explanation about glacier formations and the Perito Moreno in particular. Finally, you will get to the area where we will provide you the crampons and give you precise instructions to walk on ice. Now, the glacier was at our feet. Countless cracks, drains, small lagoons and fragmented ice blocks called seracs, form a boundless and captivating space. A little bit more, and everything turned into the universes of Ray Bradbury. Sparkling whites, deep blues, light crystals. Small waterfalls below, threads of pure water that invite you to drink. It seemed incredible to know that, even if it looked impossible, the Perito Moreno slides one and a half meter in its central part and 40 centimeters on its sides every day, thus changing its appearance day by day, and forcing the guides to modify their circuits periodically.

DAY 6: EL CALAFATE Breakfast. In the morning Leal Cruise at Argentinean Lake: Transfer from the hotels in El Calafate to Paraje Punta Bandera. Boarding at 9:00/8:30 a.m. at the company’s own dock “La Soledad” (Bahía Tranquila, Paraje Punta Bandera). After two hours of navigation, the series of ice floes, of the most varied colors and shapes, anticipates the proximity of Upsala glacier. If the weather conditions are good, we will observe the Upsala glacier at the distance. We continue navigating Lago Argentino towards the South, taking the Canal Spegazzini in order to reach the glacier that bears the same name. Lunch is served amidst this stunning landscape. Towards the afternoon, the Crucero Leal will arrive at Puesto de Las Vacas (an extremely quiet bay in the Canal Spegazzini), where its engines will be stopped to let passengers share amusing walk. Passengers shall read them and be familiar with its content. » Transfers: In case of hiring transfer options, a representative will be waiting for the passenger at the airport with the passenger’s or company’s name tag sign (all the information may be found in the corresponding voucher). If, by any reason, contact with the representative proves wrong, the passenger must immediately get in touch with the service provider operator which appears in his/her voucher. Hired land services which do not have a designated pick up time must be coordinated directly with the service provider company upon arrival. Should there be a delay, cancellation or changing in any of the flights (even so for actual connections) it is advisable for the passenger to inform of any changes to the destination’s representative (this information is included in the voucher) and/or to Esteros Viajes in order to guarantee his/her transfer to the final destination should this service be hired. » Flights: The flight schedules are arranged and/or modified by the airline companies. Esteros Viajes will best assist passengers but will not own up to the damages those alterations may cause them. Delays and flight cancellations which may affect the original schedule must be complained locally at the airline company, given that they are not Esteros Viajes responsibility and, therefore, do not imply liability to the operator. » In case of rescheduling on behalf of the airline company which will require a non-scheduled overnight stay during the trip, the passenger must request the airline company to be placed in a hotel and cover his/her transfer expenses. Do not leave the airport and decide to pay the overnight yourself until the airline company relocates you; should you proceed this way it will be impossible to get a refund from the airline. As a consequence of the latter, the passenger may not arrive on schedule at the destination. If this is the case, the hotel will not refund the overnight fee as it will consider the passenger’s deed a no show given it is not the hotel’s responsibility either. In some extreme cases such as rescheduling for climate effects, airline companies are not obliged to take charge on the hotel expenses, food, transfers and other possible expenses. » Accomodation: Passengers must be aware of each of the hotel’s schedules for check out time (generally at midday). If the passenger has a flight after the check out time it does not imply he/she may keep the room until he/she leaves without having properly arranged it with the hotel. Passengers are responsible for the charges the hotel may submit them for not complying with the schedules. In case the passenger arrives prior to the check in time, it is necessary to wait until the room is delivered. » Luggage: These itineraries allow only one suitcase or bag. Passengers will have to check in advance the amount and weight each airline company agrees to. It is the passenger’s responsibility to comply with this requirement or, otherwise, pay the overweight. In case the luggage is lost in any of the flights the complaint must be made locally to the airline company. A complaint carried out after arriving back to the origin country hardly succeeds, Esteros Viajes not being accountable for these proceedings. During the trip, passengers are responsible for the loss, stealing or misplacing of any personal belongings. » Visas and IDs: It is the passenger’s responsibility to apply for all the necessary papers for the trip such as Visa for those countries which require one, health permits, legal permits for underage citizens travelling alone, etc. Passengers passports must have a validity of at least six months as of the return date to departure country, and also two following blank pages for entrance stamping. If not, it is the passenger’s responsibility to arrange for another passport. The passenger is the sole responsible of the loss or stealing of any flying paper (Visa, passport, plane tickets, travelling documents, permits, etc.), and must own up to any corresponding cost which is necessary for its recovery. » Refunds: Once the trip has began there will be no refund for the services which are not used, cancelled days, change of cities or any other change to the original schedule when these deeds rely on the passenger’s will or third party entities (guides, hotels, transfer people, airport employees, etc.) who do not belong to Esteros Viajes. If by any other external cause the hired service providers may not partially or fully provide these services, the organizing travel agency will only facilitate on the user’s account the refund of the corresponding fee leaving out any other commitment. The travel agency will not be liable for the consequences that any flight delay or cancellation, general damages, luggage or other belongings loss, stealings, injuries, accidents, illnesses, strikes, hotel or airline bankrupcy, wars, pandemics, natural disasters or any other cause out of the agency’s reach may have on the passenger during his/her journey.
