We view this as our Christmas card to you, our readers, who have been with us throughout the year. Our talented and creative production employees have been working hard to create this year’s publication, designing the ads from local businesses, organizations and individuals who are using this special publication to send their Christmas wishes. Thanks to everyone who has purchased a Christmas greeting this year. But this publication also showcases the creativity of many of Estevan’s young people. We are delighted to have the students from Hillcrest School involved this year. All of the grades at the Kindergarten to Grade 8 school participated, showcasing their artistic talents. Their involvement came through a partnership with the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum. We are grateful to Hillcrest

and the Art Gallery for their involvement. It also wouldn’t be Christmas without Santa Claus, and with that in mind, members of the Estevan Sharks water polo club sent in their Christmas wish lists to Santa. Thanks to the Sharks for taking time from their busy schedule to participate. Estevan Mercury Publications remains proud to serve the community. This year’s Christmas greetings edition published by Estevan Mercury Publications features the talents of students at Hillcrest School. Hillcrest partnered with the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum to create the artwork in this year’s Christmas special. Hillcrest principal David Gillingham said the school has worked with Karly Garnier, who has been the education, outreach and programming co-ordinator at the EAGM, for a number of years, and is currently on maternity leave. So the school approached Garnier’s replacement, Alison Jursa, about working with the school for the Christmas greetings special. “We thought it would be something different to showcase the artistic talents of our students,” said

Gillingham. “We contacted Alison, and she was happy to come down and do that.” Jursa spent a day at the school, where she guided the students as they created their art. “She was using a combination of different themes, so she was using either Christmas, or winter, or a holiday theme, to make the submissions as inclusive for all of the students,” said Gillingham. Many of the students, particularly the younger ones, went with a Christmas theme, so there was a variety of interpretations of the Nutcracker or a Christmas tree, while older students depicted the time of year. “You’ll see some of the paint work that the older students did reflects a winter interpretation,” said Gillingham. Jursa noted she taught a different craft or drawing technique
to each of the grades. She was pleased to facilitate the program, and praised the students for their work. “I think art is definitely something that is in the eye of the beholder, and no two pieces are ever the same, so I thought each of the kids work was absolutely wonderful,” said Jursa. One classroom, for example, drew the Grinch from Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas. As she watched the students draw, she could see how each Grinch turned out differently. Gillingham was also thrilled with how the artwork turned out. “One of the joys of art is the kids get to express themselves in their own way, and so they can use a theme and interpret it themselves,” said Gillingham.
“What they put forward is something that’s meaningful for them, as an interpretation of the theme at play.” Gillingham and Jursa agreed that the students’ personalities shines through in what they produced, and the artwork gave them an outlet that is creative and personal. “It wasn’t just one uniformed piece of work. It was multifaceted,” Jutra said. Gillingham is pleased Hillcrest was able to participate in the Christmas greetings project, and is happy the students will have their work appear in the paper.
