The reUnited Telethon will look as close to its traditional format as it can be. The only change that the board decided to keep from the previous two years is an option for performers to submit pre-recorded entertainment.“It’sa really handy tool for us to allow entertainment to perform. The Garden on Fourth is open to the community to stop by and enjoy nature and art.
Some of the plants growing this summer will make a return next year, Tytlandsvik said, but others won’t. So, now is the best time to stop by and see the entire variety of the 2022 edition of the Garden on Fourth. Tytlandsvik said it will stay gorgeous until the first serious frost.

The Garden on Fourth in Estevan is in full bloom, inviting the community to stop by and enjoy the beauty of nature before fall takes the reigns. Gale Tytlandsvik has been working on maintaining and improving Estevan’s downtown oasis.
Tytlandsvik said they may ask people to laminate their art, so it lasts longer, and then they will put it up in the garden.

vik’s efforts, as well as other local volunteers and sponsors, the Garden on Fourth kept beautifully developing this summer. All planters had been sponsored before Tytlandsvik even had a chance to put a call out, and people were inquiring about other ways to support the garden.
KRJ’s Kody Hall cut the metal tree for Tytlandsvik’s project. The trellis was installed in the garden, and Tytlandsvik started adding glass pieces to add colour to it. Plants also appreciated the addition and use the trellis for support.Alsothis summer, with help from a very creative fan of the garden, Tytlandsvik was able to get an underground watering system installed. It all started with a family friend from out of town
Throughout the summer and into the fall, the garden, filled with colours and fragrances, was inviting residents to come in, enjoy the flowers, grab some herbs and just have a moment for themselves. The weather has been nice to the plants this year. By early September the garden was in full bloom and the plants were as happy as they’ve ever been.

Tytlandsvik tried a few new plants, including a cardinal climber, a new kind of dahlias, sumac and others. Love-lies-bleeding, greeting guests at the front and back entrances, is not new to the Garden on Fourth, but it’s never been as big as it is this summer. The same goes for the annual castor bean, which grew really big at the back side of the garden this year.
A big addition this spring was the metal trellis. The piece inspired by Gustav Klimt’s The Tree of Life was installed in memory of Karen Saxon, who passed away in 2021, and Rhonda Tisdale, who died in early 2022. Both families asked that donations go to the Garden on Fourth in memory of their loved“Betweenones. the two of them, I thought I could do something really impactful … And this is a Tree of Life by Gustav Klimt, from that painting ... I just thought it was fitting – a tree of life in memory of two ladies who loved gardening and loved flowers,” Tytlandsvik shared.
“We met here, and we started chatting and in his retirement, he designs underground watering systems. He just fell in love with the garden, and he said, ‘I will design it for you for nothing if you can get someone to pay for the parts,’” Tytlandsvik recalled. The Estevan Downtown Business Association was fast to pick up the bill for parts, and Gale and Kelly Tytlandsvik installed the system, specifically designed to serve the needs of the plants at the Garden on TytlandsvikFourth.still comes in to water in front of the Salvation Army and fertilize all plants, but the new equipment saves her about two hours a day now, she said.Another project to be brought into the garden this year is a metal installation to go along the southwest side of the garden to cover up a building. After the death of Queen Elizabeth 2 was announced, the talks about the need for the anachronistic monarchy and monarchal relics became louder among some Canadians and other Commonwealth citizens. What do the royals indeed do for the former members of the British Empire outside of using a portion of taxpayers’ money?
I recently took the Canadian citizenship test, and the preparation materials, which try to make it easier for newcomers to understand the system, put it simple – Canada’s monarchy is important because it guarantees responsible government in the country. And responsible government means that prime ministers, provincial premiers and cabinets remain in power only as long as they have the support of the publicly-elected House of Commons or provincial legislatures.

But there are players who are eager to show what they can do when given an opportunity. It’s hard to be a front-line scoring forward when you have experienced players like Mark Rumsey, Olivier Pouliot, Eric

Those of you who read my columns know that I’m all for change and a big fan of innovations and development. But on the other hand, I see the importance of traditions. Traditions reinforce values such as freedom, integrity and responsibility. I don’t believe in blindly following the traditions, but I truly believe that traditions help keep the essence. And the royals represent the fundamental values, while also adapting to the changes as the world swirls around.
This team should be excellent defensively, and when the defence falters, the goaltending should be strong, with returnee Cam Hrdlicka and rookie Jackson Miller, a local product. Thenumber of changes meant a very busy offseason for head coach and general manager Jason Tatarnic, who has been trying to fill all of the voids left by the departures from last season.

The last 70 years were the time of decolonization and the end of the empire. But Queen Elizabeth 2 wasn’t the one to give independence to Nigeria and South Africa in 1960 and 1961. She wasn’t the one to give a command to shoot at protesters on Bloody Sunday in 1972. She wasn’t the one to take Britain into the European Union in 1973 or to roll out Brexit in 2016.

It’ll be a very different club from last season. Just six players are back. Yes, they have lost a lot of talented guys from last year. Some graduated from junior hockey. Some were traded. And others decided not to come back for whatever reason.
It’s the unrealistic reality of sports at high levels.Regardless of what happens on the ice during the coming months, this is a team that deserves our support. Just because they might not be as strong as last year’s team, or as entertaining or dynamic, doesn’t mean fans shouldn’t be there.
Britain, and even more so Canada, Australia, New Zeeland and other Commonwealth states, got where they are today, not as a result of Elizabeth’s decisions, but rather during her times. For Canada, the second Elizabethan era was the time of growth, evolvement and development, the time of post-war boom, the time of the beginning of reconciliation.
And here is another reality: I went to Grade 5 when Vladimir Putin became the president of Russia in 2000. I left Russia in 2013 when Putin was the president. I passed my Canadian citizenship test in 2022 when Putin is still the president of Russia, and citizens now have way fewer rights and freedoms than they did 22 years ago, let alone everything else. I haven’t had the heart to call his government responsible for well over a decade.

The good news for Poilievre is he has time. If the LiberalNDP agreement holds, then we won’t be going to the polls for another three years.
He has a lot of the traits that you would want in a leader. He’s bright and articulate. He can be fiery and bombastic. Question period in the House of Commons will certainly be more interesting with Poilievre going after the Liberals.
The Liberals must stop punishing farmers and immediately cancel their ridiculous fertilizer reduction target. Our farmers deserve the utmost support and respect, and I wish all producers across Souris-Moose Mountain a bountiful harvest season.
Poilievre’s victory was predictableutterly

ering the food Canadians need, while protecting the environment. In fact, Canadian farmers are already up to 70 per cent more efficient in fertilizer use than other countries.
If we don’t vote until 2025, there’s no guarantee that Trudeau will still be prime minister. He’s carried the Liberals as far as he can. And if we do get an election before 2025, that might not be a good sign for Poilievre. It might be because the Liberals see an opportunity to get the majority government they so desperately covet.
Poilievre’s time as Conservative Party leader has finally come. It’ll be a while before we find out if he gets to take that final step.
a lot of work to do in the evenings and weekends.
It gives him time to connect with the moderate conservative vote. It gives time to return to the communities he visited during the campaign. It gives time for voters to get to know him, although with nearly 20 years of parliamentary experience, a couple of cabinet portfolios while in government and lots of time spent in the national spotlight while in opposition, voters likely know him pretty well by now.
The Trudeau Liberals recently outlined their plan to reduce Canada’s fertilizer emissions by 30 per cent by 2030. Unfortunately, this costly, unscientific scheme couldn’t come at a worse time for Canadian agriculture or consumers.Farmers are still reeling from the impacts the war in Ukraine has had on fertilizer supply, and according to financial experts, the Liberal’s target could lead to $48 billion in losses. To top it off, farmers are still stuck with the carbon tax which has jacked up the cost of doing business and made operating a farm more difficult.
“There are a lot of events and activities that I try to check out, but there are a lot of things like the leisure centre that I haven’t really got to explore. I think the leisure centre looks great specifically, and I can’t wait to explore that a little more during my time here,” he said. Males is from Saskatoon originally. He had never been to Estevan before he applied to be part of the LIC program, but he said he’s really happy with the community and the city.
Federal government attacking a primary tool of farmers
Poilievre’s election victory also marks a shift in Tory voting patterns. They moved away from the moderate conservatism favoured by O’Toole. Even 2017 leadership race winner Andrew Scheer was far more moderate than several of his opponents.Ifhe’s to be successful in becoming prime minister, Poilievre will need to follow the road map of Harper, who largely governed from the centre-right. Harper’s opponents often try to vilify him as being ultra-conservative, but Harper was not as far to the right as they portray him, or as conservative as he maybe wanted to be.
Aspiring physician spending a year learning from local doctors
med school are a lot different from the third and fourth, and there’s a lot more lecturing in those first couple of years, and a lot less patient contact. Like most med students, I’m excited to finally be leaving lectures behind a little bit and spending more time talking to patients and learning that way in the hospital.” He has been able to take in some of what Estevan has to offer, but Males has also been busy with his studies. He might leave the hospital at 5 p.m., but then he has
And Poilievre certainly showed a willingness to work hard and meet the people. He criss-crossed the country during the leadership campaign. He didn’t just focus on the big centres. He went into small cities and towns. He learned about issues that mattered to people in all sorts of communities, rather than focusing on the large markets and the communities that dot the Trans-Canada Highway.
“It’s better than I expected, but also I expected it to be great,” said Males. “I’ve had a great first few weeks. I’ve got a lot of experiences already, but there’s lots of things I haven’t seen and I’m excited for those, too.”
Poilievre is also going to have to ease up on the bluster and build bridges inside and outside of the party. While he represents the departure from the more moderate philosophy of O’Toole, there are still a lot of small-C conservatives within the party whose voices must be heeded. But Poilievre can’t forget those who got him into the leader’s role, either.
The LIC program also provides hands-on experience, as he gets to try things and develop skills that his peers might not have. “In those centres, there are residents, there are new doctors and just lots of people who are trying to learn and train, and it can be harder to get that hands-on experience,” saidBeforeMales. going to medical school, Males obtained a bachelor of science in biochemistry from the University of Saskatchewan. Then he took a couple of years off to travel through Europe and he lived in Budapest. He returned to Canada for medical school.
He’s going to have to realize that bluster is fine, but he can’t win in Canada if he sounds like Boris Johnson or Donald Trump. The antics of those leaders don’t play well up here.
“They work with diff erent people every day and different tutors every day, but also they don’t really see the same patients repeatedly, so they don’t get to form that relationship with patients that we do here or in the other smaller sites,” said Males.

Three thousand rubber ducks rushed through the Souris River towards the finish line Sunday afternoon. Many people and their pets joined the Estevan Humane Society for their annual Duck Derby fundraiser, held at the boat launch at the Woodlawn Regional Park. While waiting for the race, kids enjoyed a bouncy castle, could get their faces painted and had a blast playing with a big inflatable yellow duck. A food truck was also on location, and the shelter had some merchandise for sale.
“The more we train, the better we get, and it’s just something we have to be ready for at all times,” said Lowen, who would like to see these scenario

The race started at about 2 p.m. when ducks were dropped off the Highway 47 South bridge into the Souris River. While some rubber athletes right away headed into the nearest underbrush, others, with some current and wind, were floating towards humane society volunteers, waiting for them in canoes at the finish line.
The last few days before the fundraiser were really busy for board members and volunteers with selling tickets, marking and preparing ducks and getting everything organized. They were able to sell out the tickets by about 10:30 a.m. on the day of the race, and Lakusta said it felt good to have another successfulWhilefundraiser.restrictions were off the table this year, the shelter still continued to accept e-transfers, which they started during the past two years. It allows them to reach a broader audience and have more support for their fundraiser. Lakusta noted that online and offline ticket sales split about 50/50.
Approximately 30 members of the Estevan Police Service, Weyburn Police Service and the Canadian Pacific Railway Police were involved in training on the CP Rail grounds on Thursday. Police Chief Rich Lowen said even though the location was on CP Rail property and CP police were involved, the scenario wasn’t directly related to trains. Rather, the situation dealt with armed and barricaded people who had a weapon, and whether other individuals were in danger. The incident had been planned for a while, and was not in response to recent incidents. Lowen said it’s something police plan to do regularly.
“Just paying our bills, vet bills. We’re looking at starting to do some renovations down there and just trying to upgrade some stuff. Just slowly trying to make it a better building for us,” Lakusta said. The humane society also had several dogs and puppies available or almost available for adoption out at the fundraiser, not only to socialize them and have them outside shelter walls, but also in the hopes of finding them new homes. They have 14 dogs of different sizes, ages and personalities up for adoption.

A reception was held for the families at Government House in Regina by Lt Governor Russ Mirasty and in this beautiful setting the families and organizing committee members were able to finally meet and mingle. It was wonderful. The Estevan Legion was the centre for a number of events. Craig Bird of the South East Military Museum gave presentations on the history of the Commonwealth Air Training Plan and its local connections; many families brought medals, flight logbooks, photos of the airmen, and articles on the crash for display, generating some very interesting discussions. Two metal shards from Dakota 962 were also on display. The Legion catered the banquet buffet on Friday evening and one of the highlights of the dinner was the open microphone session where some family members recounted touching stories, including meeting for the first time relatives that were unknown to them until the Committee made the connection. The final event at St Giles Church was the setting for the Saturday evening memorial service conducted by The Venerable Wilma Woods which concluded with the ringing of the church bells.

On a personal note, my involvement over the last nine months with the Committee was an interesting and very rewarding journey. As the only committee member related to a crash victim (my uncle was F/L Harry Cowan, DFC), I was amazed and grateful for the persistence, imagination and effort of Marie Calder, Allison Holzer and Lois Wilson on behalf of the families to ensure the airmen were not forgotten. They were the gas in the engine to make it all happen and I am pleased and proud to have worked with them on a project that meant so much to the families.

“It turned out really, really well. We had a good turnout for the barrel racers. And then for the Hooves and Hawgs, the grandstands were full and we had a full crowd. There’s a lot of traffic. I think overall, the Exhibition Association would be very happy with the turnout that they have for this event,” Barbour said.
A lot of participants in both events were from the Estevan area, and many came from other communities in the southeast with some from as far away as Moosomin and Whitewood. The Barbours ran Power City Barrel Series all summer long, and they felt the name would fit this final summer event as well. However, Callie noted that the Black and Gold Day competitions were a onetime set of events at this point.“This was like a one-anddone type situation. But moving forward, it could potentially be an annual event. We’ll just have to see what the future brings for us. It was very successful, and I think moving forward, we could definitely put something similar like this on again,” Barbour said. “Traffic was unreal. I was very shocked by the amount of people there.”

“I’ve been there before, and I know you don’t want to get stuck to the outside on the start,” he said. “I started in the middle and the guy beside me didn’t get a very good start.”
Estevan opened the weekend with a 5-1 loss to Yorkton Saturday at Affinity Place. Carter Tuplin had the Bears’ lone goal, a short-handed tally that came when the Bears were already trailing 4-0 in the third period.
Turnbull was competing at the IMCA Super Nationals in Boone, Iowa, this month. Starting 11th on the grid in Saturday’s 40lap feature, known as the Big Dance, he said he had a good start, and quickly worked his way up to sixth.
Nationals in 2021. Laney, who also hails from California, has raced in Estevan during the Dakota Classic Modified Tour and at other events, and suggested Turnbull pilot the car. Turnbull had to choose between racing at Super Nationals or returning to the John Seitz Memorial late model race in Grand Forks N.D., the top late model race in that state.
Riley Deck was in goal for the Bears. The following day, the Bears scored three times in the third period to beat the host Maulers 4-1. Jye Zawatsky scored the winner early in the third, and then Carter Onrait scored short-handed and Blaze Gutzke tallied at even strength.
The 39th annual Parent-Child Tournament was held at the TS&M Woodlawn Golf Course on Sept. 11 on a hot, sunny and calm day.
Thirty-tree teams entered the competition. Each team had an adult paired with a youth.
All of the golfers were treated to hot dogs, hamburgers, salads and a drink thanks to the support of the sponsors.

Super Nationals has several days of qualifying to whittle the field down to 33.He tried to qualify during races last Wednesday but had a bad draw and came up short. Turnbull reached the final thanks to a couple of strong results on Thursday. He won his qualifying heat to reach one of the two A features that night, and then he worked his way up from 11th on the grid to finish second and punch his ticket for the final on Saturday.

An Estevan woman who was born in England is reflecting on the life of Queen Elizabeth 2 and the Queen’s record-setting longevity. Queen Elizabeth 2 died on Thursday at the age of 96, bringing an end to her 70-year reign – the longest in the history of the British monarchy. Terry Williams said she admired the way the Queen led the Commonwealth. “Shewas a very kind lady, and very caring,” said Williams, whose husband John is also British. “She cared about theWilliamscountry.” never met the Queen or had interactions with her, but her father met her.
“We’re all pleased that Charles will get the chance to be king,” said Williams. “He’s served loyally … and he has spent all of his life to be king.” The new king was born to be the heir, so his entire life has been steered in that direction. Williams is confident that Charles will do a great job as king, and she believes that will be due, in part, to his mother for providing him with good guidance in life.
The fundraiser was started by Weyburn about nine years ago. Three years later the Rotary Club of Estevan joined the fun initiative, and ever since

Participants in the 24th annual Estevan Ride for Ronald McDonald House gathered for a group photo before venturing out Sunday afternoon. Eighty-five motorcycle riders registered for the event. Participants gathered at the McDonald’s in Estevan, and then they rode to Lampman, Arcola and Stoughton, where they enjoyed food, socializing and Crossroads Inn. A total of $5,225 was raised for Ronald McDonald House in Saskatoon, thanks to the registration fee each participant paid and support shown Representatives of the Ronald McDonald House were on hand to meet with the bikers, thank them for their support and partake in the ride. The Rotary Clubs of Estevan and Weyburn hosted their annual Golf Ball Drop fundraiser at the TS&M Woodlawn Golf Club. The two clubs were able to sell about 7,000 tickets, each of which matched a golf ball. Saturday evening all balls were loaded into a big basket, lifted in the air and dropped at the golf course over a specially-designed hole. The first three balls that found their way into the hole brought in some money for the owners of the matching tickets.
