The Estevan Steelhaus U18 AAA Bears faced the Battlefords Stars twice on the weekend.
POSITION

Bruins play two OT games in return to Affinity Place

The Estevan Bruins’ first two home games since Jan. 14 went to extra time.

The Bruins defeated the Nipawin Hawks 2-1 in overtime on Friday night in their return to Affinity Place. It was also the Bruins’ first game since Jan. 28.

The following night, the Bruins lost 7-6 in overtime to the Flin Flon Bombers in the latest memorable game between the two teams.

Owen Miley scored with a minute to play in the extra frame against Nipawin. The Bruins’ spent the first period shaking off some rink rust, as they managed just four shots on goal.

“There was some rust there, physically and mentally, but I like how we finished in that game. Even when down, I thought we controlled the game,” said Bruins’ head coach and general manager Jason Tatarnic.

The pace picked up in the second period. Mitch Kohner scored on a shorthanded rush for the Bruins with 6:10 to play in the middle frame. The Bruins had several more chances to double the lead, but couldn’t beat Hawks’ goalie Damon Cunningham.

The Hawks tied the game with 93 seconds to play

in the second on a goal by Zander Stewart.

Neither team scored in the third, but the Bruins outshot the Hawks 14-6 and had several high-quality chances.

“I thought our first period was pretty rusty, and that’s to be expected when we’re not really in game shape,” said Miley. “I thought in the second and third period, we really took it to them, and it was just a great game from the guys.”

Miley’s winning goal came in tight on a two-onone.

“I was looking for the pass, and then the [Nipawin] d-man slid down, and I was a little worried at first. But then I just saw the goalie cheating a bit and roofed it,” said Miley.

Cunningham finished with 31 saves on the night.

Cam Hrdlicka stopped 27 shots for Estevan.

As for Saturday’s game, the Bombers led 5-2 after the first period, but the Bruins chipped away in the second and third. Alameda’s Cody Davis had a hat trick for Estevan.

Jeremi Tremblay opened the scoring 4:37 into the first period. It remained a 1-0 game until just over seven minutes remained in the opening frame, when

Kohner scored for the Bruins. Goals by Alexi Sylvestre and Cole Duperreault 18 seconds apart gave the Bombers a 3-1 advantage. Davis scored his first of the night 95 seconds after Duperreault’s goal, but Sylvestre and Duperreault scored 34 seconds apart with less than two minutes to play in the opening frame for the three-goal Bomber advantage.

The Bruins pulled Hrdlicka after the first period and inserted Jackson Miller. The Bombers outshot the Bruins 15-6 in the middle frame, but Jagjeevan Phangura had the

lone goal to pull the Bruins to within two.

Davis scored shorthanded 3:35 into the third to make it a one-goal game. The Bombers finally solved Miller when Matt Egan scored five minutes after Davis.

Goals by Gabriel Filion and Davis in the final five minutes of the third tied the game.

Zach Cain picked up the winner with 18 seconds to play in overtime.

Tatarnic was pleased with how the Bruins battled back after the costly mistakes of the first period.

“We battled back to

time mentally for him, because he’s been away,” said Tatarnic. “There’s a little of rust there, but as the game went on, he played really well.”

Davis said the ankle feels fine and it’s good to be back on the ice with his teammates.

Hrdlicka stopped seven of 12 shots he faced, while Miller made 26 saves on 28 shots. Kenneth Marquart made 26 saves for the Bombers.

make it a one-goal game [in the first], and then we made a couple more mental mistakes,” said Tatarnic. “And then we won the second period 1-0, and we dug back in the third and tied it.”

Davis said they battled pretty hard starting late in the second period.

“I think there’s a pretty good rivalry. But you have to come every night to play, and we didn’t come fully prepared in the first period and it cost us in the end,” said Davis.

The game was Davis’ fourth since returning in late January from a broken ankle.

“It’s going to take some

Talen King was in goal for Midale, while Cody Matthewson was the Redvers goalie.

The Rockets then won 8-2 on Sunday. The game was tied at 1-1 after two periods, as Steven Lindenbach’s goal for Midale was the lone tally of the first

necessary, would be Feb. 15 in Moosomin.

The defending champions, the fourth-ranked Carnduff Red Devils, grabbed the lead in their series with the No. 5 Bienfait Coalers with an 8-5 win last Wednesday.

Kyle Garagan led the Red Devils with three goals and two assists, while Matthew Audette scored twice, and Trey Stocker, Matthew Plews and Tanner Reynolds also scored.

Taysen Holt was in on all five Bienfait goals with a marker and four assists.

Kaelan Holt scored twice and Daniel Wanner and Wyatt Garagan also scored.

Cody Dumaine (Carnduff ) and Zack Miller (Bienfait) were the goalies.

A season-high crowd of 1,379 fans attended the game. Flin Flon’s win also ended a stretch of 11 straight wins for the home team in this rivalry. It included one game in last year’s regular season, the seven games of the 2022-23 SJHL final, and the first three meetings between the teams this season.

The Bruins played both games without captain Kade Runke, who was injured when the Bruins visited Flin Flon in late January.

Tatarnic said Runke is out day to day.

The Bruins (24-19-2-2) will be back on the ice on Feb. 15 when they host the Melville Millionaires starting at 7 p.m. Then they will visit the Humboldt Broncos on Feb. 18 and 19.

Game 2 was to be played Tuesday in Bienfait. (Results not available at press time). Game 3, if necessary, would be Feb. 16 in Carnduff at 8 p.m.

Finally, the seventhseeded Yellow Grass Wheat Kings and the No. 2 Oxbow Huskies were to start their series Tuesday night in Oxbow. (Results not available at press time). Game 2 will be Feb. 17 in Yellow Grass at 8 p.m., and Game 3, if necessary, would be the following night in Oxbow, also at 8 p.m.

Massive bonspiel for a terrific milestone

The Lampman Curling Club is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, and has a major event in the works.

The club will host a 64rink bonspiel from March 29-April 2, with games happening at the town’s curling rink and arena, which will be converted to curling ice. Calvin Christensen, who is the chairman of the rink board, said they have 4550 teams already signed up, and they will accept the 64 teams that register and pay.

“If they want to make sure to get in, then they have to pay,” said Christensen. “If they say they want to curl but they haven’t paid, and someone comes in … we have to take the paid entries.”

They need people to sign up as soon as possible because they need to start working on the tournament’s draw. The times for the games won’t be known until the draw is finalized.

Several special added attractions are part of the event. A western wing night will happen on March 29, followed by taco and tequila the following night and a bonspiel banquet and opening ceremonies on March 31. The banquet will boast smoked beef and chicken from the Carnivores meat shop in Lampman.

“We’re trying to keep a bunch of our stuff all from

local businesses, so we’ve got some of the local businesses that are going to help with all of the fixings,” said Christensen.

An Irish and Scottish pub and Singo music game will be on April 1, and a supper on April 2 will clean out the kitchen.

People can drop by to watch the games, and tickets will be sold for the various suppers. The regular curling lounge will be open, and an additional bar will be set up at the hockey arena, Christensen said.

Due to the amount of curling that will occur and the tight schedule for the competition, the banquet on March 31 will be relatively short with a come and-go format. There won’t be a guest speaker.

The entertainment and decorating committee has been trying to find pictures from the past, and they want to have as many photos as possible.

Grimes Sales and Service (2020) is the event’s major sponsor.

“We’d love to see that if anybody has ever curled at the Lampman Curling Rink, maybe they can’t curl there [for the 64-rink bonspiel] but they can come and sit down and reminisce. Maybe they curled in the older rink.”

Lampman has not hosted a 64-rink bonspiel as far

as Christensen knows, and so they thought the 100th anniversary would be a good time to host such an ambitious competition.

“For a small club like ours that is basically volunteer-run, I think it’s a pretty special thing that it’s lasted for 100 years, so we wanted to really make something memorable out of it, which is why, just over a year ago now, we started talking about a 64,” said Christensen.

The rink’s executive and a tournament committee have been working hard over the past year to get everything in place.

Alameda has hosted a 64-rink bonspiel in the past, and Christensen said they have talked to people from that community about their event.

“They’ve offered us some of their scoreboards that they use, because, of course, we have to get extra scoreboards and things like that,” said Christensen.

A shuttle will be offered for anybody who is coming from Estevan to compete and enjoy curling.

The first curling rink built in Lampman in 1923 was an open-air facility. It started with one sheet, with planks for spectators to stand on.

A rink was built in 1953, and the current one opened in 1981.

The students and staff at Sacred Heart School/ École Sacré Coeur spent last week celebrating French culture as part of French as a Second Language Week.

Janique Wilson, who is one of the French immersion teachers at the school, said they had a number of activities that brought together the school’s French immersion students as well as those from the English grades who take core French.

Starting last Monday, the kids created a bulletin board on why they like to learn French, and Wilson was pleased with the responses. Online Zoom video presentations were held with Canadian Parents for French.

Then on Thursday, they held a festival for their peers. Students enjoyed folk dancing in the gymnasium that was led by retired teacher Margo Peloquin. Students also

enjoyed French literature in the school’s library with school librarian Michelle Skjonsby, while Nicole Dupuis, who is a retired French immersion teacher, taught the kids how to play the spoons, which are a traditional French musical instrument.

Other activities were held to create more awareness of French cultgure.

The students in the English classrooms do take core French, Wilson said, and they wanted to give everyone a taste of French culture.

Wilson noted the Grade 7 and 8 students French immersion students are going to the Festival du Voyageur in Winnipeg on Feb. 17.

“To tie everything together, we decided to have our own little version of that in the school,” said Wilson.

Students also participated in snowshoeing, since that was a tradition-

al form of transportation for the voyageurs.

“Our kids get to experience some modern

snowshoes, as well as the traditional ones, which do look like a racket,” said Wilson. “It’s a little dif-

ferent to move than in the modern ones.”

The school wrapped up the week with a Beard Day, when

Choose Life Ministry, which operates a program in southeast Saskatchewan for women with lifecontrolling issues, will be hosting a Coldest Night of the Year fundraising walk.

The event will happen on Feb. 25, starting with registration at 4 p.m. at the Estevan Gospel Chapel. The walk will start an hour later. Participants will walk a distance of two or five kilometres.

Choose Life founder Shelley Boyes said they

typically attract people from Estevan and surrounding communities, including Carlyle, Carnduff and Lake Alma, among others.

Boyes said they could still use a few more walkers and volunteers.

The fundraiser is Choose Life’s largest of the year.

“When we weren’t allowed to gather together, we stopped having our banquets and this has become our major fundraiser,” said Boyes.

In 2022, the walk raised about $13,000 for Choose Life’s Homestead for Hope.

“The money is used for programing, so it would go to the instruction for the girls while they’re in our program,” said Boyes.

Choose Life has a couple of women currently residing at the Homestead for Hope and finishing up their program. They are scheduled to graduate in early March. Up to six women can be accommodated at

the Homestead for Hope at a time, but the largest number they have had is five.

Once the two women graduate, a new group of women will start in the program.

“We’re currently taking application for a new cycle,” said Boyes.

Organizations across the country host Coldest Night of the Year fundraisers to raise funds and awareness for those who are hungry, homeless or hurting.

Oxbow hosting a winter festival on Family Day

The first-ever Family Day Winter Festival in Oxbow was such a big success last year that the community has decided to host the event for a second time.

This year’s event will occur on Feb. 20 at the Oxbow Arena and the outdoor rink. Festivities begin at 11 a.m. with indoor glow

skating, a bake sale, and Just Bread crepes and waffle cones. Proceeds from the bake sale go to the youth drop-in centre, and there will be a freewill offering at the Just Bread booth for the Oxbow Curling Club. Outdoor snow crafts will begin at noon, and people can enjoy free hotdogs and

smores to roast at outdoor fire pits, courtesy of the Southern Plains Co-op in Oxbow.

Shinny with the Oxbow Huskies will begin at 12:30 p.m. at the outdoor rink.

Activities starting at 1 p.m. will be an introductory session for doubles curling, and music by Keith, Vivian and Christina.

Open curling will start at 2 p.m.

The rink kitchen will have food available to purchase, but everything else will be free or by donation.

Treena Mohrbutter, who is the community development officer with the Town of Oxbow, said they had lots of people come out last

year, with a good number of people playing street hockey with the senior Huskies.

This year the activities will be at the rinks, whereas last year it was at the hall.

And last year the Huskies played street hockey with the kids. This year it will be at the outdoor rink.

The introduction to

doubles curling is also new this year. Mohrbutter said they hope to have nice weather for the outdoor activities, but there will be some attractions indoors. While the event is held in Oxbow, they look forward to seeing people from the surrounding towns, villages and RMs.
