SOUTHEAST LIFESTYLES, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2015

Experiences led to walk in Estevan By David Willberg Lisa Morrison wants people to know about the care provided at Ronald McDonald House. Morrison and her husband, Trevor, have stayed at the house in Saskatoon and other communities during the past decade with their family while their 11-yearold son, Carter, has undergone surgeries. She estimates they have stayed there at least 25 times. Thanks to her family’s experience with Ronald McDonald House, Lisa Morrison organized a Red Shoe Walk in Estevan on Sunday afternoon at Affinity Place. Dozens of people gathered to walk or run five kilometres on the arena’s track. “I was approached by the (Ronald McDonald) house in Saskatoon, to bring awareness to the house, and to raise some funds to supply resources to the families that use the house,” said Morrison, who lives in Carlyle. This year marked the first time that a Red Shoe Walk has happened in Saskatchewan. Estevan was one of eight communities to host a walk. Participants paid a $25 registration fee to participate, or they collected pledges. If they raised $50, the $25 fee was waived. The event also served as an opportunity for people to learn more about the house.

Morrison said they stayed at the house after their son was born, and they have stayed there when he has had doctor’s appointments and surgeries. “It is just a wonderful way to relax and just focus on our son while he was sick and getting better, and not have to worry about things like parking, or where we’re going to stay, or what we’re going to do,” said Morrison. “It was nice to have that support and those volunteers to talk to.” Carter was admitted to the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon after he was born. Saskatoon’s Ronald McDonald House is a few blocks away. A social worker informed the family about the house. “We walked over, they greeted us at the door and the welcomed us right away,” said Morrison. Carter was born with achondroplasia, a medical condition in which the growth of long bones is stunted, resulting in short limbs. The average height for an adult male is 4 feet, 4 inches, or 131 centimetres. It’s also a condition that carries complications. Carter has had close to 20 surgeries. But he’s doing wonderful now, his mother said. During the Red Shoe Walk, Carter Morrison was a pace-setter, as he was among those who opted to run instead of walk. Karen Linsley, a fund developer with the Ronald McDonald House in Saskatoon, said Estevan was chosen to host the event because of their connection with the Morrison clan. “We have other families

They also get to interact with the children who are staying at the house at the same time. The response to the walk has been great across the province, Linsley said. There are a lot of families who want to give back to the house and share their appreciation for what the house has done for them. Proceeds will be directed towards the operations of the Ronald McDonald House in Saskatoon. Nearly 20 people are employed at the house, including parttime, casual and relief staff, and there are more than 220 volunteers. About 1,200 people access the house each year.

Super senior hits 100 and looks for new challenges By Norm Park He’s definitely one of Estevan’s super seniors. Ed Leadley celebrated his 100th birthday last weekend among family and friends and that included a social gathering at St. Giles’ Anglican Church. No longer having to concern himself with any kind of peer pressure, Leadley continues to enjoy an active, independent lifestyle in his modest bungalow located in the heart of the Pleasantdale subdivision, surrounded by friends and neighbours. “I think they like me well enough, we seem to get along,” he said, referring to his neighbourhood and its residents. Joined temporarily by his son Ray of Whitecourt, Alta., and his pooch Rocky, Ed Leadley was quite willing to share a few stories and a personal history. One thing that continues to motivate him is his love of carpentry, a life-long hobby with practical implications. In fact, when Lifestyles visited with him, he was sporting a slight limp, courtesy of a walking boot placed around a cast that was healing a broken foot. “I tripped over some lumber while fixing a window in the basement,” he said matter of factly, while leaning on the cane that he slung around rather casually. Leadley’s sight is good as long as he wears his ordinary eye glasses and his hearing is also strong … assisted by a hearing aid that definitely worked since no questions or comments needed to be repeated, nor did voices have to be raised to be heard by the centenar-

ian. The gait was a bit cautious, but that, we felt, was due mostly to the walking boot. Leadley said he still enjoys tinkering with wood and cabinet-making. “I made all the cupboards for this house, and the china cabinet,” he said, pointing to the handsome cabinetry adorning the living room. He also built the family’s first house on the other side of the city. After his wife Fannie passed away in 2004, Leadley said there were no thoughts of moving out of the comfortable home or foregoing any of his independent spirit. We asked him about Meals on Wheels or homecare, whether they paid him a visit on occasion. “No, no, none of that. I’m a damn good cook,” he said with a smile. “Actually, he’s a very good cook,” said his 74-yearold son with an affirmative nod. Born in Carievale and raised on a farm near Hirsch, Ed Leadley attended school in that community up to Grade 7. At that point he quit, which was common for young people in that era. He immediately set out to pursue a career in farming, working at a number of local farms as a young teenager before moving to Estevan to get a job at the local Estevan Brick Plant as a steam engineer. The next career move took him to SaskPower where he worked for over 20 years as a steam engineer at the old power plant. This career path was interrupted in the mid 1940s by a two-year stint in the army.

Ed Leadley (left) relaxes with his son Ray and Ray’s pet pooch Rocky in the living room of his Estevan residence.

Leadley said he took his first military basic training sessions in Regina before being transferred to Eastern Canada to complete the process. He never did get to serve overseas though. “My unit went over before I completed training. Now, I’m happy I didn’t. At the time though, I wasn’t.” Leadley then backtracks a bit, recalling that right after his exit from the army, he spent two years working in the lumberyard in Bienfait, and then he left to go to SaskPower. In 1938, he met the love of his life, Fannie Chesterman, who called Moosomin home at the time. They met at a social event in Gainsborough where his folks, George and Elizabeth, just happened to be living at the time.

That union led to a family with three siblings, Ray being oldest, followed by Keith and Doug. Ray completed a career in the oil patch while Keith works in sales and Doug chose welding for his profession. “We all ventured away from home, further west,” said Ray. “But we’ve never really been concerned about dad. He’s doing well and he loves his independence.” What does Ed Leadley think about new technology? Does he have a Twitter account? He laughed before responding, “no, none of that. I don’t even have a cellphone or a computer.” But he agrees he probably could put out a pretty good blog if he ever wanted to learn the process. “But no, I’m not even thinking about that

one,” he confirmed with a big smile. So what technology did he struggle with in his earlier career? “Not much really, maybe the engine room at first. I would struggle on occasion with those big units, but my farming experience helped a lot.” “We’ve been talking about dad before, my brothers and I, and really, we’re not concerned. If he wants to stay here, we’re OK with that. He’s very self-sufficient and he’ll call if he needs a hand. He has great neighbours.” “Yes, I do. I can’t chase around after them now though,” he said with a laugh. He still enjoys gardening, although he admits it’s a pretty modest effort. But a

neat floral garden and welltrimmed lawn indicate that he (or someone) has a good handle on the upkeep. The home, yard and driveway have a well-kept and comfortable appearance. So, there comes the time to ask the ultimate question that has to be posed to every senior citizen who has reached that certain century milestone. “To what do you attribute your longevity?” There is no hesitation. “Hard work, that’s it. Just sticking to your work,” he nods. We can’t help but think that an ability to get along famously in the kitchen, might be a contributing factor. Ed Leadley’s world is still wide open to potential and possibilities.

An exciting new era begins For more than 16 years, Estevan Lifestyles Publications has been sharing positive news about people and community events in southeast Saskatchewan. And for decades, the Southeast Trader Express has been delivering entertaining copy that has been of interest to people in the region. The time has come to bring the two publications together. And we couldn’t be happier, or more excited, about this change. This marks the first edition of Southeast Lifestyles. The name says it all; it’s going to be a regional paper that celebrates the best of the southeast. While it’s based in Estevan and there’ll be stories on people from Estevan, you’ll find lots of stories from rural communities as well. You’ll find the great human interest stories that Lifestyles has been known for – the stories on your family, your friends and your neighbours. You might learn things about people you have never known before. These have been the Lifestyles hallmark for the last 16 years.

And you’ll find the features the Trader has been known for in recent years. Cheers & Jeers will continue to have a prominent place, and we hope you will continue to send them in. Agri News will continue to provide the latest news on the agriculture sector. And Faces will remain part of this publication, although it’s going to have a slightly different look than what you might be used to. This publication is going to have an impressive look – a layout worthy of the people we’re covering. And there will be great-looking advertisements from the businesses in the region who have contributed so much to their communities. Ultimately, though, this is your newspaper. And we’re going to be relying on you to share your stories, your community events, your Cheers & Jeers, and your feedback on the paper. We need people to pass on ideas that will make for great stories in Southeast Lifestyles. On Page 3 this week, there’s a great story on Ed Leadley, a 100-year-old gentlemen

who is still looking for new challenges. Our centre spread profiles Mike Zeleny – a longtime SaskPower employee who watched the Boundary Dam Power Station go through changes that have drawn the attention of the world. You’ll also find stories on people trying to improve their community. There’s a touching story on a woman’s desire to help the organization that assisted her family, and recaps on fundraisers that help people. We know of some great stories in our city and our region that we look forward to sharing. But with your help, we’ll have even more stories. Lifestyles and the Trader were successful because of the readers, the advertisers and the talent associated with both papers. It’s these people who will make Southeast Lifestyles a success as well. Great stories. Fun photos. Eye-catching advertisements. You’ll find these things, and so much more, every week in Southeast Lifestyles.

A shameful YouTube performance It’s not often in this world that poetic justice is ever dealt so quickly or well, when someone does something cruel and unnecessary. So when it does, we should always bask in it a little. Nicole Arbour has earned minor celebritystatus on the internet, but these days, her infamy has overtaken the growth of her fame. Arbour has become an internet-sensation for a video she posted to YouTube earlier this month that entails a monologue on her part, to a specific audience. The video is of the usual stock you’ll see when watching minor internet celebrities: zany asides, quirky cuts, and strange non sequiturs. None of this would be a problem, except the video is called Dear Fat People, and she uses her whacky delivery style to single out and bully people for their weight. Let met save you the trouble of watching it – the video is as awful as it sounds. It rehashes every tired, clichéd, nasty thing anyone has ever said to torment other people for their weight and appearance. It denies the ugly reality of fat-shaming, and it does both things with an air of condescension and frivolity. At several points, she tried to play it off as if what she said was out of concern, warning about the

Sam Macdonald Sam’s Soapbox

smacdonald@estevanmercury.ca

health consequences of being overweight and obese, as if she were an authority on the matter. You won’t walk away from watching Dear Fat People any better than you were, before watching it. You could say the same about a lot of the trash you find on YouTube, but I digress. What business is it of yours, Ms. Arbour, how much other people weigh? What authority do you have over the affairs of others that you feel entitled to comment on such things? What someone weighs or what their lifestyle consists of, the concern of nobody but that person. And let’s not forget – she’s trying to make a career out of this kind of cruel, misguided mockery. But like many who post things on the internet without thinking about the consequences, Arbour found out the fun way that what goes

on the internet can very quickly become a real problem in the real world. Retribution for her tasteless video was swift and arguably just. She immediately had her YouTube account suspended, having her ability to spout ignorance through that medium, at least, stifled. Arbour portrayed herself on social media as a martyr of sorts, bemoaning “censorship.” Eventually the video started popping back up, on other sites. Once it was available again, the consequences of her awful decision truly came home to roost. Pat Mills, director of an upcoming anti-bullying film happened to see her video. He was outraged. Why, you ask? Because he watched the very same choreographer of his upcoming movie meant to decry the societal ill of bullying, doing that very thing on YouTube – bullying people. Naturally, Arbour won’t be contributing to Pat Mills’ movie. She was promptly removed from the cast of the upcoming film, in what must have been the quickest, most satisfying loop of karma I’ve seen in ages. It was glorious, and one of the few stories you hear about, involving shaming and the internet, in which there’s a relatively just and happy ending.

Mighty waters around the islands By Linda Wegner There’s a stiff breeze outside, enough of a wind to ruffle Pacific Ocean waters into a series of white caps out yonder and, I suspect, crashing waves on the shores. Moreover, the wind is strong enough to merit a head covering; up here on the track every breeze and every drop in temperature exaggerates itself.

Buttoning up my jacket, I set out on the first of the six laps I plan to make around the track. To my right the beauty of the water is amplified by the presence of islands: Texada Island, home to a quarry that yielded the stone embellishing the front of the Vancouver Post Office; Harwood Island, which is also known by its traditional name of Ahgykson, and is part of the

traditional territory of the Sliammon First Nation; and looming in the background, Vancouver Island. There are others dotting the horizon but these three loom large in my line of sight. Along with their beauty, I am told that their presence will break the impact of prophesied earthquakes and probable tsunamis. That’s reassuring when you live perched on the edge of the Ring

of Fire, an area notorious for volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. Filling in the blanks between islands, sail boats, barges, yachts, fishing vessels and ferries ply these waters on a daily basis. In a geographically isolated community the presence of marine transportation is a source of comfort. What lies beneath the surface is what really intrigues me, though: ships

have gone down, lives have been lost and we humans have managed to populate this pristine beauty with garbage. So much to regret yet so much for which to give thanks. I enter the curve in the track with praise to God that he forgives and forgets “...You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.” (Micah 7:19, New King James Version)

Finding your spiritual footing “Try this,” my daughter said. “Look up and stare at a star and then spin around in a circle. When I say ‘stop,’ see if you can run to me.” You can likely guess how that worked out. I was so dizzy I stumbled all over the place and ended up falling over. Oddly, I have felt that before. There have been times in my life when things seemed out of balance and I was just barely stumbling along. Maybe you know that feeling too. If so, you may be interested to know that the Bible offers lots of advice to help us “find our footing.” Here are three of my favorite suggestions. *Avoid other people’s drama. Some people love to stir up controversy. In fact, some people are not happy unless they are not happy. Do not buy into their issues. Titus 3:9 sums it up well when it says “Avoid foolish controversies…because these are unprofitable and use-

Tim Pippus

of the Estevan Church of Christ less.” Help them if you can, but make sure that you are not just wallowing in other people’s muck. *Avoid seeking everyone’s approval. It is natural to want others to like you, but the fact is not everyone gets along or sees things the same way. Constantly taking opinion polls or trying to make everyone happy will paralyze you into inactivity. Instead, find the good you know you should do and do it. That was Jesus’ example. In the face of criticism, he often said, “I have

come to do the will of my father” ( John 4:34 and 6:3839). He knew what he was here to do and he did it regardless of what others thought. Waiting for everyone to rubber stamp everything you do means that you will do nothing. *Avoid thinking in terms of success and failure. Life is not usually that clear cut. Therefore, the challenge is to focus less on the results and more on the process. When we do that, even our mistakes can be part of our path to success. That is why the apostle John tells his readers to “walk in the light” (1 John 1). The process of walking with God through both the good and the bad will produce the blessings that we are seeking. Jesus said he came that we might have an “abundant life” both now and in the future ( John10:10). Why not give God’s approach a try? After all, life is hard enough without creating our own problems.

Pleasantdale will ROAR into Reading this year Pleasantdale School in Estevan is optimistic that the young people in its primary grades will be avid readers this school year. The school has launched the Really Outrageous At Reading (ROAR) program for Kindergarten to Grade 3 students. Angela Smeltzer, who is the school’s response to intervention teacher, said ROAR started last year with the Grade 1 class having a guided reading time. Four children would read with one adult for 30 minutes per day throughout the school year. “We had tremendous success, with all the children gaining in their learning to read,” said Smeltzer. “And then we applied it to other grades as well with our Grade 3

group.” Parents, teachers, teacher assistants, secretaries and librarians would

read to the children. Smeltzer noted the parent-teacher conferences for the Grade 1 teacher,

Kindergarten to Grade 3 attended the school’s firstever ROAR into Reading night in early September. They learned more about the program and how it will benefit the school’s students. Smeltzer said the school’s staff stressed the need for people to love reading, regardless of whether someone is a Grade 1 student, or an adult working fulltime. “Reading becomes something of great importance,” she said. “We broke it down for the parents and explained to them that when we’re in the young grades, our focus is not on picking books that interest us, but books that we can read. We teach the children how to do that, and then we also teach the children how to have a lot of fun with reading.”

The school also expressed how important it is to understand where each child is at, to read to children so they have a good role model, and to give children a chance to interact with the material and make it fun. “It’s all about reading and having fun,” said Smeltzer. Parents who attended the meeting were great, she said. They asked very good questions on what to do with a reluctant reader, and how to fit in time for reading. “They were really supportive of the idea of trying to read more at home, understanding that at school we can only do so much,” said Smeltzer. People who attended the ROAR session were presented with a gift for them and their 306-634-2500 child.

Children are grouped into their reading levels for ROAR, but Smeltzer stressed it’s not a competitive environment. “It’s really about the love of reading and the excitement of getting into a book, and doing different activities that go with a book,” said Smeltzer. “For instance, if we read a book about a post office, then let’s write a letter, let’s figure out what happens to that letter. Where does it go? Let’s address a letter. Let’s mail a letter. Let’s receive a letter in the mail. And then it becomes real to them.” Parents of students in www.crossfitblackrock.com

New sonographer a first for hospital By David Willberg For the first time in many years, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Estevan has a full-time, in-house sonographer to operate its ultrasound unit. Hayden Meyer has been working at the hospital for the last two months. A local woman who is the daughter of Darrell and Lori Meyer, Hayden Meyer says she has been busy since she started working at the hospital, but she has enjoyed the job thus far. As a sonographer, she scans patients for many medical reasons. “I can do abdominal ultrasounds to look for things like gallstones, or I can do obstetric ultrasounds for babies in the different trimesters,” she told Lifestyles. While most people associate an ultrasound with obstetrics, she said it can be used for numerous purposes.

Meyer said she sees about 11 patients a day, five days a week. The scan of the abdomen or a pelvis can take about 30 minutes. She needs about an hour when seeing a pregnant woman. “I was warned going into it that I would be pretty busy, and there was quite a long waitlist, but I think I’m catching up to it pretty quickly,” said Meyer. “It wasn’t as bad as what I was expecting.” She doesn’t have a lot of paperwork, since much of her work can be done online. Meyer said she has always wanted a career in the medical field, but she wasn’t certain of the direction she wanted to take until she was in high school. She needed to get an ultrasound in Regina, and the attending sonographer explained the process to her. “I did a job shadow, and that’s what really got me interested in it,” said

Meyer. Once she graduated from the Estevan Comprehensive School, she entered a two-year sonography program, with a full year of in-class work, and a year of training at a hospital. “They let us scan on the very first day, and I thought it was so cool as soon as I started,” said Meyer. “I love it now.” The hospital offered to sponsor her sonography studies, as long as she agreed to return to Estevan for two years after her graduation. Meyer always wanted to come home after she finished her post-secondary studies, although she didn’t know if it would happen right away. St. Joseph’s Hospital executive director Greg Hoffort said Meyer is a very valuable addition to the hospital’s staff. For the last few years, the hospital and the Weyburn General Hospital

have shared a sonographer from Radiology Associates for ultrasound services. The sonographer would spend two days a week in each of Estevan and Weyburn. “While that was very

much appreciated, the demand for the service was greater than that, so we were very pleased when Hayden, a local student, expressed an interest in becoming a sonographer, and even more thrilled that she was willing to

join our team upon conclusion of her training,” said Hoffort. Meyer’s arrival means improved services for the community for doctors, he said. St. Joseph’s Hospital was without ultrasound services for several years, because the hospital didn’t have a sonographer. They resumed on a parttime basis in 2011. “Patients were all being seen in Estevan, but would have to go elsewhere to have their ultrasound test performed, regardless of whether they had to go to Moose Jaw or Regina or elsewhere,” said Hoffort. “It was inconvenient for the patient and the physician providing care.” A sonographer can be very hard to find, just like any other technician in health care. So the hospital was thrilled when a local student chose Estevan as the place to start her career.

Duelling Pianos remains very popular The Duelling Pianos cabaret still draws large crowds and generates a lot of money for the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum (EAGM). The third annual fundraiser attracted about 400 people to the Power Dodge Curling Centre on Saturday night. EAGM board chair Amber Ganje told Lifestyles that they sold all 40 tables they had available, and they also sold some individual tickets on

the night of the performance. The show opened with Oxbow band Jimmy G and the Cable Guys. “He was so good, and people were so happy that it was such an entertaining opening band,” said Ganje. Then the pianists, Jamie Mahn and Brian Burn, took to the stage. The duo has performed each year the EAGM has organized the cabaret. Ganje said it was a sim-

ilar show to the previous two years. Audience members paid Mahn and Burn to play their requests. But people could also pay them to stop playing songs. “I know some people were really trying for Taylor Swift, and there was one guy who wasn’t having any of it,” said Ganje. “Any time a Taylor Swift song was played, he went up there and stopped that song almost before it started.” Songs from musicians

like Elton John, Billy Joel and Journey were big hits with the crowd. Ganje said this year’s show was the best one they’ve had in Estevan. “It was up on a stage, everybody got a great view, and I think they worked and sang a lot better than they ever have,” said Ganje. This year marked the first time the cabaret has been in the curling rink; previous shows were at the Wylie-Mitchell building.

15093MC2

Ganje said they initially hoped to attract a larger crowd inside the bigger curling venue, but the audience was about the same size. Still, the extra space allowed them to have two bars and a bigger dance floor. Organizers don’t have any figures for the fundraiser, but Ganje said it exceeded their expectations, considering the state of the local economy and the fact

this was the third time the EAGM has brought the show to Estevan. The first two editions of Duelling Pianos raised about $20,000 each, making it among the most successful fundraisers in the organization’s history. Ganje expects this year’s cabaret will post similar numbers. Proceeds from the Duelling Pianos will be directed towards the EAGM’s programming efforts.

Harvest operations wrapping up quickly in southeast Saskatchewan By Norm Park For Agri News About half the crop is off the fields in the central and northern regions of the province, but in the southeast, it’s in the bins or pretty well ready to cut and store. The wheat crops are almost harvested, and according to Sherri Roberts, crop specialist for the Ministry of Agriculture in the southeast region, “the large majority is off now. There is some flax left yet and a few canola swaths to pick up or ready for some straight cutting, mostly in the Carlyle region.”

Roberts said she was impressed with the acreage put into soybeans this year, much more than what was seen in other areas, especially around Estevan and Oxbow. “And they look good. These crops can be left in the field to dry down for awhile. Air drying while the plants mature is a good thing.” She said reducing the beans down to about 13 per cent moisture content is ideal and so far Mother Nature is letting southeast farmers do just that, in spite of the recent heavy rain that really didn’t do much damage other than to put a slight delay into harvest operations.

Quality Post Frame Buildings

“Soybeans can be straight cut with a combine and can be done quickly. Of course that depends on how weedy the patch is. Weeds can bung up combine blades,” she added. The yields also appear to be decent, and in fact, better than decent in some sectors. “I talked with one farmer south of Oxbow and he was getting 40 bushels to the acre from his canola and over 50 bushels with peas.” Cereal crops are looking fine, Roberts suggested. There were no big concerns on that file, although some fields may have issues, but then, that’s always the case once harvest begins and progresses to a near-conclusion status. As for that heavy rain in Estevan in early September, Roberts just laughed and said, “there doesn’t have to be any moisture testing around there for awhile.” The rains even brought the browned out grasses out of their dormant stages and greened up pastures significantly. Insect damages have been very light this summer and into harvest, in fact, she said, they have already removed their traps

and are signing up producer-volunteer monitors for next spring. Roberts said she is now turning her attention to organizing a pulse workshop in Kenosee in November and to a special soybean and corn summit in Estevan, slated for Dec. 4. “Corn is an up and coming forage and grain crop around there and, soybeans of course,” she said, referring again to her earlier observation about this now popular crop. “I’m getting a couple of presenters from the University of Minnesota, because they’re from an area where they are familiar with these crops. It should be a pretty interesting event.” In the provincial crop report filed on Sept. 7, it was noted that 61 per cent of the crops in southwest Saskatchewan had been harvested and it was anticipated that they too, are now pretty well finished with the majority of their harvest operations. At that same time, only 22 per cent of the crop was off the fields in eastcentral and northwestern regions of the province.

Five days of rodeo at Agribition, one of them will be free admission There will be five days of rodeo action at this year’s Canadian Western Agribition (CWA). Tickets for the rodeo events went on sale Sept. 15, with the public being informed that the Canadian Cowboys’Association (CCA) will be providing the competition and action as they strive to earn some

of the $100,000 that is up for grabs in the form of cash and prizes. The Mosaic Company and CWA have teamed up to offer the first free night of the CCA Finals Rodeo on Nov. 24. The new initiative will allow urban and rural families to take in a night of family entertainment at no charge.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for us to give back to the community and provide a unique experience for families to enjoy,” said Sarah Fedorchuk, senior director of public affairs for Mosaic Company. “We hope people take the opportunity to check out Agribition before the show and gain a better

understanding of the important role of agriculture in global food security, which is at the heart of our business.” In addition to announcing the free rodeo night, CWA released the line-up for the Pump Roadhouse Stage located in the Bud Light Loading Chute. The performers that

have been lined up include Alex Runions on Tuesday night, Nov. 24, then Amy Nelson on Wednesday, the Dead South on Thursday and Blake Berglund on Friday night. This will be the final

year of the CWA’s use of the Chevrolet GMC Stadium. To celebrate this special date, the CWA is planning a farewell cabaret on Nov. 28, following the final round of the CCA Finals Rodeo.

The View from the desk of Marga Cugnet, CEO, Sun Country Health Region Think carefully about your safety

Sixty thousand Canadians are injured every year as a result of slips, trips and falls. And then there’s transportation safety, falls and crushes and injuries from hazardous materials. And then there are sports injuries and those that occur at home. The ability for us to hurt ourselves, or others, as we go about our daily business seems to be almost endless. WorkSafe Saskatchewan says this province has one of the highest rates of preventable injuries in Canada. There were already 21,264 injuries in Saskatchewan this year, as of September 8. This is all of great concern to a health care organization, not only because of the suffering and loss that accompanies those numbers, but because these injured friends and neighbours will need our health care services as a result. As we enter a new school year and ramp up activities again after the summer break, we all need to be thinking seriously about the best way to prevent injuries. WorkSafe Saskatchewan, at http://www. worksafesask.ca/, is a great source of information for your business and home for ideas about injury prevention. The organization is actively promoting its Mission Zero campaign, trying to move the province to zero injuries. Your business can start down the road by sending someone to the 2015 WorkSafe Saskatchewan Regional Workshop in Yorkton on Thursday, October 29 to begin developing a safety program. You can find someone in your organization who deserves an award for safety. Applications for the 2016 Safe Worker and Safe Employer Award will be accepted by WorkSafe SK until October 30, 2015. You can have staff take the online training courses provided by WorkSafe Saskatchewan. There are a lot of options to help organizations and individuals learn more. The point is to educate everyone in your organization about the safe way to work and play, and then continue to draw attention to the need for constant vigilance at home and elsewhere. As one of the health care organizations that contributes to the high injury statistics in the province, Sun Country Health Region has developed an aggressive internal campaign to reduce patient and staff injuries to zero by March 31, 2020. From several different directions at once, we are working on the creation of a “culture of safety,” in conjunction with other health regions and health partners in the province. We encourage you to join us in this important work.

Main field crop stocks decline

Canada’s total stock levels for major crops is notably down compared with the same time period in 2014, said a recent report issued by Statistics Canada. Stock holdings in 2014 were still being augmented by the 2013 bumper crop, said the report. Total stocks of wheat decreased 32 per cent from

the same date in 2014, to 7.1 million tonnes at the end of July. This decline is explained by a decrease in on-farm stocks of 51.3 per cent and commercial stocks by 6.5 per cent. The drop in on-farm stocks is mainly attributable to Saskatchewan where the drop registered 50.7 per cent. At the national level, end of July canola stocks

were down 22.8 per cent to 2.3 million tonnes as a result of a 46.5 per cent decline in on-farm stocks as commercial stocks actually increased by 17.5 per cent. Total barley stocks declined 37.6 per cent to 1.2 million tonnes at the end of July. On-farm stocks, which account for over 85 per cent of total stocks, decreased 38.7 per cent to

one million tonnes. Commercial stocks fell 29.8 per cent to 172,000 tonnes. Total stocks of oats fell 35.4 per cent to 681,000 tonnes. On-farm stock levels led this decline, falling 42.2 per cent. Commercial stocks, by comparison declined just 3.3 per cent. The data collected came from Stats Canada’s Farm Survey that included

about 13,000 Canadian farmers. The survey was conducted from July 22 to Aug. 3. The July survey also included two questions pertaining to permanent on-farm grain storage capacity and the percentage of grain stored on farms using temporary storage methods. Data on commercial

stocks of western major crops originate from the Canadian Grain Commission. Data on commercial stocks of special crops originate from a survey of handlers and agents of special crops. Data on commercial stocks of corn and soybeans are estimated by a Statistics Canada survey of grain elevators in Eastern Canada.

Mike Zeleny, right, conferred with Prime Minster Stephen Harper, Premier Brad Wall, and plant supervisor Bill Mann, about the $240 million in federal funding the carbon capture and storage plant at Boundary Dam received in 2008.

Zeleny puts the energy in Energy City By Sam Macdonald Mike Zeleny is a familiar name with SaskPower, and a familiar face in the community. This is to be expected, since he has worked in Estevan for the last four decades. Zeleny, who was project manager for SaskPower’s Boundary Dam Integrated Carbon Capture and Storage transition to operations, has worn many hats while working for SaskPower at the Boundary Dam and Shand power stations. In his time, he has helped usher in a new era in terms of emission reduction activity, happening right now at Boundary Dam’s own Unit 3. “I started working for SaskPower right when I graduated from high school, on a recommendation from a friend I had where I grew up, in Melville, Saskatchewan,” Zeleny told Lifestyles. “I was looking to get a job somewhere, I suppose, and the recommendation came when SaskPower was hiring.” Zeleny began his career with SaskPower humbly, working as a labourer in November

1974. His early work entailed cleaning slag out of a boiler during a summer maintenance process. Over time, Zeleny found his place with SaskPower, as his knowledge and expertise with the organization grew. He worked in a wide variety of fields, eventually becoming a go-to-guy on the energy infrastructure at the facility. “I definitely climbed up the ladder with SaskPower. When I was doing general labour for the company, I got a bid, I guess you could call it, into the operating field,” said Zeleny. “Once I got into operation, I steadily progressed and kept studying with the assistance of SaskPower.” Upon getting hired in August 1974, Zeleny began studying and working his way to a power engineering degree. Zeleny studied on his own and was certified by SaskPower, which at the time issued certificates for power engineers itself. This enabled Zeleny to study and work simultaneously, making for easy transitions into more important roles within the company.

“SaskPower would provide courses that would help you along with the more difficult aspects of power engineering, like applied mechanics, thermodynamics and electronic technology,” said Zeleny. Through a combination of operating experience and education, Zeleny had little difficulty taking the next step in his career, getting his degree, working his way over time from a fourth class to a first class power engineering certificate. “Once the initial bid was put into operations you could progress pretty much as you did with your certificate,” said Zeleny. “Sometimes you had to wait a while, but as you progress, there were opportunities to go further at the higher bids.” After a few years of work at the Estevan Generating Station, Zeleny moved to Boundary Dam in 1976, still working on his power engineering certificates. In that time, he also took training in supervision and leadership to get up to speed with what was required in his leadership roles, the next goal on which he set his sights.

Zeleny’s career took an important and memorable turn when he helped commission the construction of the Shand Power Station, the last coal-fired plant to be built by SaskPower. He also worked as a shift supervisor at the facility, once it was built. “It stuck in my mind as a good experience. It was the most environmentally friendly power plant in Canada at the time,” said Zeleny. “It was an interesting and rewarding experience to work there. It was a lot of work, but it provided me a lot of learning opportunities.” After six years working at Shand, Zeleny returned to Boundary Dam in 1998, where he worked in a number of different capacities, as some significant changes were happening. “I’ve worked in the A Plant and then the C Plant,” said Zeleny. “When I was in the C Plant, I was there for the major rebuild of Unit 6 in 2003. I had responsibility for portions of that, and I supervised parts of that, while doing all the normal Zeleny » 18

He remembers that those were also years that entailed a lot of change, with many different initiatives taking place at the plant, including the introduction of the plant’s world-leading carbon capture and storage facility. Zeleny said, “2008 was when we finally started going down that road, and installing the carbon capture technology. I did recruitment, training, environment, (worked in) laboratories, commissioning and any other initiatives on the operational and transition sides. I did that up until I retired last year.” The engineering, commissioning and eventual

Energy expert came to love Estevan 18 « online,” he said. “Having the opportunity to be part of the team that helped start that and get it running, no doubt, is a highlight.” Even now, Zeleny keeps close ties with SaskPower, occasionally working on a contract basis, leading tours of the carbon capture facility, which kept him busy recently, when SaskPower hosted a large group of international dignitaries in a tour of its facilities in Estevan. Their visit was part of a CCS symposium in Regina. “I guess I do have a certain amount of knowledge, because I was involved for a long time on the operations side of the power plant. And I have spent a lot of time on the operating side of the carbon capture facility as well,” said Zeleny. “I did gain a lot of knowledge in all of it, physically seeing how the processes there all work. Even though I wasn’t directly involved in construction, I know how all the processes work.” Zeleny insists he doesn’t “know all the answers,” but notes that he’s happy to help out whenever possible, and that motivates him to lead

the tours. With the growing amount of interest in the local CCS technology from all corners of the world, his knowledge is a great boon to SaskPower, as it hosts the increasing number of guests who are curious about how the facility works and what progress is being made. “I enjoy helping out with that kind of thing. I can point people in the right direction,” Zeleny said. “I also get to meet a lot of interesting people from all over the world. It’s been sort of keeping my hand in the game a little bit, so I get a lot of enjoyment out of it.” Zeleny has lived in Estevan for the entirety of his career, and the city grew on him. During his time in Estevan, he married and raised two daughters, Nancy and Lisa, in the city. Zeleny and his wife Cindy, are active members of the Estevan chapter of the Lions Club. “Estevan is a great community to live in, and raise a family,” said Zeleny. “It’s got a little bit of everything and it’s just like every other community – it’s what you make of it.”

Mike Zeleny, right, continues to lead tours of the carbon capture and storage (CCS) project at Boundary Dam, like this one in 2014, because of his knowledge of CCS technology he helped set up.

Salvation Army needs donations The Estevan Salvation Army continues to experience significant demands on its food bank, and the need is expected to grow in the months before Christmas. So the timing couldn’t be better for the 20th annual Canada Post food drive on Sept. 26. Canada Post employees will circulate the community and gather donations for the food bank, starting around 9 a.m.

People are asked to leave donations on their front step. The post office staff members will then bring the food back to the Salvation Army’s building, where Salvation Army employees and volunteers will sort the food and stock shelves. “We’re going to need a few volunteers to help with the sorting and the stocking of the shelves,” said family services man-

ager Ronza Reynard. “It’s best if we get it all done in one day, so it’s not lingering around for days on end.” The food will be sorted in the church this year, as opposed to the food bank, since the food bank can be overcrowded with so many people working inside. Volunteers will be needed the day of the food drive, and Reynard said it would be a good opportu-

we are going to continue to get busier as we go into the fall season. And we are helping the elementary schools with their lunch programs and some breakfast programs, so school snacks are always important to get in as well.” Reynard said the top

But they are short on everything, except for canned vegetable soup. Reynard said the shelves are about 30 per cent capacity. “They are low, but I don’t feel we’re desperate,” said Reynard. “I find that Estevan has been very much supporting us this year, knowing that we are that much busier. So the people who are able to help us out are continuing to bring stuff. And we have been able to help everyone who has come to us for help.” But their food stocks are lower than they typically are at this time of year. The food drive is the largest event of its kind for the food bank every year, and Reynard says they need it to be wellsupported this year.

One exhibitor will be outdoors in the Estevan Leisure Centre’s parking lot, and another will be at the Leisure Centre’s forecourt. For the first time in several years, there won’t be any exhibitors at the Icon Centre. Larger items, such as recreational and leisure vehicles, would often be in the Icon Centre. Wall said the lack of exhibits in the Icon Centre is a positive development. “I think it will be a lot better for the flow of the people who are coming in to see everything,” said Wall. “They get out of their vehicles, there’ll be the exhibits outside, and they’ll have to walk past another exhibit (in the forecourt).” She expects some Showcase patrons in recent years forgot to visit the exhibits that were in the Icon Centre. Booths will be selling food, clothes, skin care products, health and wellness merchandise, agriculture implements and automobiles. Politicians, churches and non-profit organizations will be part of Showcase as well. “I’m impressed with the amount of variety there is,” said Wall. Showcase is a partnership of the chamber, the Estevan Lions Club and the Rotary Club of Estevan.

People who attend the Estevan Showcase Business Expo from Sept. 25 to 27 can look forward to a lot of variety from the event’s exhibitors. Fifty-four vendors have been booked for Showcase, and they will occupy a total of 80 booths. Some of the exhibitors need more than one booth. “Some of them are trade show companies that sell multiple items, so they have multiple booths booked,” said Jackie Wall, who is the executive director for the Estevan Chamber of Commerce. Up to 100 booths are available for Showcase. Wall said they are continuing to accept exhibitors, but they would need to be confirmed by the end of this week, so that they can finalize the exhibitors’ location next week, before Showcase begins. She continues to receive inquiries about Showcase on a daily basis. Doors will be open on Sept. 25 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., on Sept. 26 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Almost all of the exhibitors will be in Affinity Place. The bulk of them will be in the arena’s bowl, but there will be some along the concourse.

Hip or Knee Replacement?

Disability Tax Credit Linda Isabel Shauf May 4, 1952 September 21, 2006 Nothing can ever take away, The love a heart holds dear, Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps her near. Forever loved! Forever missed!

DECHAINE: In loving memory of Chris, September 19, 2005. Dear Chris, In the blink of an eye, ten years have passed Since that day in September this world felt you last. Ten years of memories that will never be whole, Ten years of your story that will never be told . We miss our father, our son, our brother, our friend, A bright light made fainter, but one with no end. We struggle to hold on to each part of you, To remember each detail of the Chris that we knew. Though the sands of time make it all less clear, Our hearts hold our love for you just as near. We have a lifetime to live, to try to move on, But we know it will never be the same with you gone. Only life with your daughter helps make this wrong feel right, A congeniality award, a heart of gold, the bright star in our night. And now 10 years of writing must come to a close, And we lay down the pen that writes this prose. Please know we’ll love you forever, more with each day, But at the mark of a decade, there’s no words left to say. With love, Your family

CARD OF THANKS I want to thank everyone that came to the fund raiser. My family and I greatly appreciate every dollar and item that was donated. Thank you Mistee Dukart for making it all happen and all the volunteers who helped out. Thank you. -Denise Cossette

The family of the late Brian Howard would like to thank everyone who offered us such kindness, support and messages of sympathy at his passing. we would especially like to thank Don Britt for his support and comfort he gave to Brian during his health problems. Locals turned out to support Denise Cossette Hitchcock’s Denise Cossette has received a financial boost as she continues her fight against cancer. A fundraiser named Party in the Park was held on Saturday night inside of Rotary Park south of Estevan.

About 100 people turned out for the event, which featured a barbecue, draws, silent and Chinese auctions, and music by Regina-based band Little Chicago Blues and local DJ Sounds Familiar Entertainment Services.

Organizer Mistee Dukart, who is a friend of Cossette’s, said they raised between $11,000 and $12,000 for Cossette’s medical expenses. “The people who did come were very generous,

who were there to support her. Cossette was initially scheduled to travel to Toronto for a clinical trial cancer treatment. But she couldn’t get into the trial this year. Another trial likely won’t happen until next year. So Cossette will head to the Immunity Therapy Centre in Tijuana, Mexico on

Sept. 22, where she will be under the care of Dr. Carlos Bautista. The treatment costs nearly US$19,000. Cossette will also face expenses related to her travel and accommodations. While they fell short of their goal for the benefit, Dukart said they had to do something, and the funds raised will help.

Shawn DeBruyne celebrates his third place finish in the Enduro Race at Nodak Speedway earlier this month. He plans on moving up two spots at the Estevan Motor Speedway Enduro this Sunday.

DeBruyne ready to defend Enduro crown Last year’s Estevan Motor Speedway Enduro Race champion plans to hold on to his crown after the 2015 event is run this Sunday. Shawn DeBruyne heads into the Enduro Race after recently placing third at the Motor Magic Enduro Sept. 4 at Nodak Speedway in Minot where he finished 123 laps in 90 minutes. He hit that mark by running a V6 front-wheel drive Pontiac Grand Prix in the race, which is the first of

its kind to ever finish in the top three at Nodak Speedway. “I like the way the V6 handles,” said DeBruyne, noting most people run a V8 and rear-wheel drive vehicle in the event. “The way the front-wheel (drive) handles around the track, it just goes a little better.” DeBruyne said the Enduro is a rough race to compete in as there are basically no guidelines to follow resulting in a lot of contact. He said moving

the gas tank and battery to a better position in the skeleton stock car, as well as getting rid of all the glass, helps him stay alive during the 90-minute endurance test. Not having to deal with any flat tires and keeping the car from spinning out is what has helped him win it. “It’s a lot of fun,” he said. “It’s like going in go-karts, but 100 times better. There are not really any rules. You can bang and you can crash into other cars. It’s fun.”

Local wakeboarder proves indestructible on the water By Jamie Harkins Estevan’s Sage Dayman battled through a torn pectoral and triceps muscle late last month to win a silver and bronze medal at the National Wakeboarding Championships in Abbotsford, British Columbia. Sage, 15 and a Grade 11 student at Estevan Comprehensive School, took the bronze in the Canadian Wake Championships wakeboarding event in his junior men’s age group of 14 to 17 year olds at the Aug. 20 to 23 nationals in Valley Wake Park. He won the silver at the same tournament in the Canadian Straightline Championships cable event in the junior men’s 14 to 18 age group. “Nationals are always the last competition of the year,” said Sage, who suffered the injuries seven days earlier while participating in a practice round for the 2015 Canadian National Wake Park Championships in Winnipeg. “I just wanted to end the year on a good note and I feel like I did.” Cable is when a rider hits rails and jumps on the water by being pulled back and forth while suspended in the air by a wire, while wakeboarding is being pulled behind a boat and hitting the waves. Sage said his good showing in the cable event came down to him pulling off a 360, while most of the other kids were only attempting 180s. He said the wake-

boarding bronze win was achieved by hitting a Raley, which is when a wakeboarder cuts in, pulls their feet behind them and flies through the air like Superman. “I had to not go so big on my tricks,” said Sage about competing with the injuries. “Most of them there is a lot

thought it would be a better reward to place well in nationals than go out there and not give it my all,” he said. The silver and bronze follow a gold medal Sage earned at the WakeJamWakeboard Provincial Championships that were held Aug. 7 to 8 at River

of arm extension, but I could move my arm fully, so I was still able to do them.” After Sage suffered the torn muscles, he visited a doctor and was told there was no way to anchor the injuries in such a way as to help them heal without the risk of re-injury. Sage said he mentioned to the physician he would be competing at nationals a week later and was told ‘do your best, but don’t push it’ or the muscles will tear again. “I was really scared to get injured again, but I just

In six years in the sport, he has won six provincial titles, including this year, and two national gold medals. “I just really love it,” said Sage about his passion for wakeboarding that sees him practising on the water almost every day during the summer. “It’s an adrenaline rush.”

Tyler Fuhr excited for season

By David Willberg Tyler Fuhr gives the CanElson Drilling Estevan Bruins something they haven’t had in a long time: a returning No. 1 goalie. The Bruins’ crease has seen a revolving door of netminders for well over a decade. There have been great goalies who spent just a year in Estevan, such as Juliano Pagliero in 2004-05 and Matt Gibney in 2013-14, but there have been other goalies who weren’t so memorable. Fuhr was acquired by the Bruins last fall from the La Ronge Ice Wolves for a pair of prospects. At the time, the Bruins expected they were acquiring a netminder who could provide stability between the pipes for the 2014-15 season, and backstop them in 2015-16, when they will be the hosts for the Crescent Point Energy Western Canada Cup.

Fuhr delivered last season, helping the Bruins overcome a slow start to qualify for the postseason. He was named the MVP for both the Bruins and the Viterra Division. Now the team is hopeful he can be great again. He’s not worried about the team’s recent history when it comes to goaltenders. “The only goalie that I’ve known who has played here is Gibney … and he was a good goalie,” said Fuhr. “I think every team, in a sense, has a revolving door. As a goalie, you have one job and that’s to stop the puck, and give your team a chance to win every night. If you’re not doing that, then the team has to find somebody else.” Fuhr said he had a good off-season. He spent the summer working at a horse stable outside Regina. The farm work was a

good way to keep in shape. “Essentially you’re lifting things all day,” said Fuhr. “Whenever you get on a 1,500-pound animal, it’s always a workout.” He spent time improving his goaltending techniques with Regina Pats goalie coach Rob Muntain. Fuhr also spent his summer counting down the days until the start of the 2015-16 season. “Summers always go quick, and for once in my career, I guess, it was nice for it to go fast,” said Fuhr. “All the boys were excited to get back here, and I’m sure the fans are ready to get it going. I know Chris (head coach and GM Chris Lewgood) was excited; I talked to him lots over the summer. It’s going to be a fun year this year.” The players brought in during the off-season have meshed well with the re-

turning players, he said. The newcomers want to win, and they’re ready to make big contributions. But Fuhr doesn’t feel

any added pressure. There are high expectations, and they’re excited about the opportunity for the upcoming season.

“We’re going to go out there and we’re going to have fun, and we’re going to try to exceed those expectations,” said Fuhr.
