Soft landing for Estevan drag racing group By Brad Brown of The Mercury The fate of the Estevan Drag Racing Association’s eighth season is no longer up in the air. As Estevan Municipal Airport pursued certification over the winter from Transport Canada to allow passenger planes, the EDRA’s seven-year tenure on the airport’s runways appeared to be in jeopardy. But, after some brief negotiations, the racers learned late last month that they will be able to go ahead with their 2010 program as planned. “[It was] nothing really major, nothing that we couldn’t work around,” said EDRA public relations director Jim Forrest. “Just that we have to have all our plans in place, and we changed the way we run so there’s absolutely no danger of interference with the air side of things.
“We used to run the opposite way and we actually crossed the runway, so this is way better and it was actually a pleasure working with the city.” Drag racing enthusiasts will be able to get their fix on June 6, July 25, and Aug. 15. Forrest expects to once again run an A event, a bike feature, a Quick 16 feature, and a junior dragster shootout at each show. “It’s going to be racing as usual,” he said. Meanwhile, the EDRA also confirmed April 27 that it will be acquiring land north of Estevan Motor Speedway and Trackside MX park from Sherritt Coal with the goal of eventually building its own facility. The oft-delayed project has been in the planning stages for years but may now finally have a solid foundation on which to build. Finalizing a facility layout and fundraising

plans are the next steps for the group, which won’t commit to a target opening date just yet. “What we want to do is make sure we dot all our i’s and cross all our t’s because when we’re done with it we want this to be a facility that racers and spectators want

Responsible growth the key for Trackside MX By Brad Brown of The Mercury Trackside MX park and the South Corner Racing Circuit are performing a balancing act as they approach their fifth year in operation. On one hand both entities, headquartered in Estevan, are growing in popularity each year. On the other, Trackside president Chris Istace says the track continues to aim for “grassroots” growth and keeping the series accessible to motocross riders of all ages and skill levels. “The word’s getting out there and the e-mails keep coming in with people asking about it,” said Istace. “So it’s getting a little bigger than a grassroots series but we’re trying to keep it the biggest little race series.” With riders coming in from Manitoba, North Dakota, and across Saskatchewan the SCRC now features 11 classes of racing, and the circuit will run seven dates in 2010 at tracks in Estevan, Weyburn, Carlyle, and Oxbow. Trackside will host the season opener June 5 and the season finale Sept. 25. For the first time in Es-
Trackside MX will mark its fifth official season of operation with the installation of brand new starting gates, and the return of the South Corner Racing Circuit, which is entering its fourth season. tevan, that experience will now include starting gates. “We had two big sponsors that came forth last year … donated toward our gates, and they’re being made in New York right now,” said Istace. “That was a huge investment, a $7,000 investment to get our start gates and that puts us right up there in the best level of the gates that we’re getting. “[They] were actually made by the same company that makes them for the Daytona Supercross … pro
series in the States.” Istace added that the club is looking at hosting one race school for pros and one for beginners at some point during the year, and that he also hopes to see quad racing at Trackside in the near future. “We want people to come out and experience motocross racing at a higher level, but without the intimidation or extreme competitiveness of it,” said Istace. “We want them to have a good experience and enjoy the sport and stick with it.”

A year in review TORY FRANKE
The 2009 racing season, the 10th at Estevan Motor Speedway, was one of the most memorable in the track’s history. The 2009 racing season marked the 10th in operation for Estevan Motor Speedway and was one of the most memorable to date. Here are a few of the highlights: NOTABLE Hobby stocks returned to the Speedway for the season opener May 2 after a one-year absence. *** Devin Raynard took the checkered flag in the $5,000-to-win IMCA modified special on May 30 after suffering a flat tire during qualifying.
*** Estevan landed Nights 2 and 3 of the 20th annual Dakota Classic Modified Tour in July. Jay Noteboom (Hinton, Iowa) won at Estevan for the second straight year on Night 2, following a spectacular rollover involving Underwood, N.D.’s Ben Seidler. *** Night 3 was notable for an appearance by NASCAR veteran Kenny Wallace, who signed autographs during the day and finished 20th in the evening’s feature. ***
Williston, N.D. native Mike Hagen dedicated his Aug. 8 win to his mother, Mavis, after she fell out of her wheelchair, suffering a broken nose and hip the week before the race while recovering from having both her legs amputated. *** Three first-time track champions were crowned at season’s end: Devin Raynard (IMCA modifieds), Ryan Harris (IMCA street stocks), and Cory Evans (IMCA hobby stocks).

Blood sport: Racing in Estevan a family affair for many By Brad Brown of The Mercury You can take the Speedway out of the family, but you can’t take the family out of the Speedway. From Day 1 at Estevan Motor Speedway, families have been part of the glue that has held the track together. In turn, racing has returned the favour for many of those who have supported the Speedway over the years. “I had somebody say ‘You work on your race cars way too much and you don’t spend any time with your family,” Estevan’s Jim Harris said with a laugh, having just returned from a racing trip to Iowa with his son Ryan. “It was kind of like our holiday,” said Jim, a longtime IMCA modified driver at EMS. Jim’s daughter Alyssa also competes at the Speedway, racing in the hobby stock division, while Ryan won the 2009 IMCA street stock title. “We spend a lot of time together,” said Jim. “My daughter’s 16 years old and she’s underneath the car pulling trannies, pulling motors, or like the other night pulling gears out. How many other 16-year-old girls are doing that? “And the whole time she’s here I’m here too. It’s good family time for us and it’s always been.” For Weyburn’s Labatte family too. Dale Labatte has scaled back his racing commitment in recent years but has two children — Lindsay and Sterling — he expects to see regularly in the street stock class at Estevan this year. His oldest son, Brendon, will move from the modified division to compete in the street stocks as well, but his availability will be limited as he will again be manning the offensive line for the CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers and he’ll be expected to report for training camp June 6. “We’ve been involved in other sports and it’s definitely a family thing,” said Dale. “That’s the way it is. It’s the drivers, the pit crews, and everything. Everybody helps everybody. “And you learn so much about vehicles in general

But more often than not the families come and they stay. Turnbull, Hanson, Mann, Massett, Hagen, Harris,
and Labatte are just a few of the names that will likely show up multiple times in your race program this year. “It’s an addiction,” said Dale Labatte. “It’s fun and it’s educational and it’s just all around a good team thing.”

2006 Fast Shafts champ weighs in on changes at EMS By Brad Brown of The Mercury The road from Minot, N.D. to Boone, Iowa doesn’t run through Estevan, but the 400-kilometre detour will be a lot more appealing in 2010. Just ask Joren Boyce. “It’s just a phenomenal step up for Estevan to be able to put themselves in that kind of payoff, and to be a candidate for the Fast Shafts, that’s awesome,” said the Minot-based IMCA modified driver. A regular at Estevan Motor Speedway since it opened in 2000, Boyce was one of 10 drivers from across North America voted into the 2006 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational race, a race he ended up winning. But to even qualify for the ballot he had to first win a feature race at a track paying $1,000 or more to win. That excluded Estevan and its $600 payout. Until this year. Track organizers decided over the winter to bump the winner’s pay in the IMCA modified division to $1,000, meaning each feature winner will now be eligible for voting into the event, held annually in Boone as part of the IMCA Super Nationals week. “It’s one of my highlights for sure,” said Boyce, winner of 11 races (nine modified and two street stock) at Estevan. “Because it’s Super Nationals, there’s so many people there, there’s so many cars there and, really, your chances of bringing home a trophy from there almost don’t exist. They give out three trophies all weekend … and to get one of them, it’s awesome. “It’s actually displayed right here in the living room.” Of course, the added incentive at EMS, combined with a late start to Minot’s racing season while renova-
Joren Boyce, left, comes out of Turn 4 at Estevan Motor Speedway in this file picture. tions are completed at Nodak Speedway, will likely amount to stiffer competition for the coveted ballot spots.
But Boyce won’t be deterred. “I just hope we can do an interview a little later in
the year when I’ve qualified to be an All-Star and people can start voting for that,” he said with a laugh.
Where the heck is Boone, Iowa, anyway? Boone is a city of approximately 13,000 located about 1,400 kilometres southeast of Estevan, near the geographic centre of the state of Iowa and home to Boone Speedway. In other terms, that translates to about 400 km south of Minneapolis, 600 km west of Chicago, 350 km north of Kansas City, and 1,100 km east of Denver. Rough driving directions are courtesy of the fine folks at Google Maps: 1. Take Highway 39 across the United States border at North Portal (38 kilometres) 2. This will turn into U.S. Highway 52, which you will follow through Minot to Jamestown, N.D. (428 km) 3. Here you will merge with Interstate 94 East, taking you through Fargo and into the Minneapolis suburb of Maple Grove (500 km) 4. Merge onto I-494 South, which will loop around to the south edge of the Twin Cities area, and merge again onto I-35W

Speedway looking to breed All-Stars in 2010 By Brad Brown of The Mercury The stakes are going up at Estevan Motor Speedway in 2010. In a bid to attract more cars to EMS, the Speedway has bumped pay from $600 to $1,000 for a win in the IMCA modified division. The move means more than just some extra scratch for mod drivers in the area when the track’s 11th season kicks off May 15. It also makes the Speedway’s winners eligible for the voting that determines the two regional representatives at the IMCA’s 10-car Fast Shaft All-Star Invitational, held each September in
Iowa. “That’s a big thing in the States so … for a lot of drivers it seems to have a lot of significance,” said Speedway president James Gustafson. Gustafson says the extra cost will be covered through a slight increase in registration fees for drivers, another move that has been received well. “We’re not downloading that onto the fans,” he said. “That’s something the drivers don’t mind paying for the chance to win a little bit more money.” The new schedule was also designed with an eye toward higher car counts, particularly in the first half of the season.
With Minot’s Nodak Speedway undergoing renovations until July, EMS will accommodate drivers from south of the border by hosting six events prior to June 20. “There should definitely be some more interest from them,” Gustafson said of the Nodak regulars. “They do want to race so we’re hoping that they’ll decide to come here until their track is ready.” Other highlights of the season schedule include the annual stop on the Dakota Classic Modified Tour (July 12), a special appearance by the NLRA late models (Aug. 16), and the season-ending enduro race (Sept. 19).
Championship night is scheduled for Sept. 18 and tentative plans are in the works to hold
a $3,000-to-win mod feature on July 10. Last year’s event was a $5,000to-win feature.
If all goes according to plan, the remaining $2,000 this year will be awarded to second place.

That’s a wrap: Vehicle designs going high-tech By Brad Brown of The Mercury It’s a typical race night at Estevan Motor Speedway: Lots of fans, lots of horsepower, and lots of questions about the blue No. 21 IMCA modified car driven by Davin Emmel. “Who’s the guy in the M&Ms car?” they ask. “That’s sweet!” Good luck getting Emmel to admit it but his car has become one of the most popular attractions at EMS, particularly among younger fans and first-time visitors to the track. Emmel says credit for the original concept (plan A was to go with Tide laundry detergent colours) goes to his friend Blaine Fichter, who had painted Emmel’s car when he first started racing in the hobby stock division. But advances in technology have now left the final design on Emmel’s car — along with over two dozen others — in the hands of Aaron Turnbull at Future Signs. Painted race cars have gone the way of the dinosaurs and it is Turnbull’s vehicle wraps that are now in high demand. He did the designs on four cars in 2003, his first year on the job. This year he estimates he will create or install between 25 and 30 wraps. Creativity is key. “There’s lots of wrap companies in the States and they all look the same to me,” said Turnbull. “There’s a few that are original and they do a nice job, but you can go to a track and just about every car, they’re just about the same idea with the scallops and the bright colours. “It looks good but it’s not very original.” Turnbull’s wraps are built on a computer then printed, laminated, and glued onto the car in pieces — doors, quarter panels, hood, sails, nose, and spoiler. He says the average turnaround time per car ranges from one to two weeks. It all depends on the customer: How detailed do they want the car? How much input do they want? Did they have a design in mind to start with? “It’s probably about half and half really,” said Turnbull. “Some of them say this is exactly what I want. They’ll bring me a picture and I’ll kind of take the ideas from it and make it my own so I’m not ripping off someone else’s design. “But then other ones, they don’t really care. They just say ‘Use your imagination. These are kind of the
Davin Emmel’s M&Ms themed No. 21 car is one of the more distinct designs currently running at Estevan Motor Speedway.
colours I might want in it and my number is this and these are sponsors, and put it together.’” At $875 (installation included) to cover a mod head to toe, the wraps don’t come cheap. But let the driver who goes without do so at his or her own risk. If recent history has told us anything about Estevan Motor Speedway it’s that a good crew, a good car, and a good driver might not be enough to win anymore. No, it’s going to take some pretty exceptional looks too. “Aaron’s car always
looks good,” said Emmel. “[Devin] Raynard’s … always got a sharp looking car. Joren Boyce with that green too, I like that. You can never mistake that.” In saying so, Emmel named Estevan’s IMCA modified champions for 2009 (Raynard) and 2007 (Turnbull), as well as the winner of the IMCA’s prestigious Fast Shafts AllStar Invitational in 2006 (Boyce). Emmel himself won the mod division in 2008 and his car also found success in 2007 when he lent it to Steve Arpin, who went on to win all five races on
