2018 SASKTEL TANKARD

Welcome to Estevan for the 2018 SaskTel Tankard, one of the premier curling events that will be in Saskatchewan this year. We are excited that Estevan will be hosting the Tankard, which will bring 16 of Saskatchewan’s top men’s curling teams to Affinity Place from January 31 to February 4. We extend a hearty welcome to all of the curlers who are in Estevan competing in the Tankard, as well as to family and friends joining them, their coaches, and all of the other people who are coming to Estevan for the Tankard. Estevan last hosted the Tankard in 1994, so the city is long overdue to host this prestigious event. It promises to bring lots of great curling, from the first draw at 2:30 p.m. on January 31, to the final on Feb. 4 at 2:30 p.m. The team that wins the Tankard will represent Saskatchewan at the Tim Horton’s Brier national championships in Regina in March.

Some of the greatest men’s teams in curling history have won the Tankard. This marks the first time that a premier curling event will be held at Affinity Place, which opened in 2011 and is one of the top events centres in the province. We hope you’ll enjoy watching the games in the comfort and beautiful surroundings of Affinity Place. If you’re a visitor to the community, we hope you will take the time to tour the city and see all that it has to offer. Estevan is blessed to have excellent hotels, restaurants and retail businesses. These businesses are staff by dedicated, courteous and knowledgeable staff. You’ll find our hospitality is second to none. Be sure to visit the businesses that have advertised in this publication. SaskTel Tankard has a rich history The SaskTel Tankard is an event that traces its history back to the late 1920s. According to the CurlSask website, the first Tankard, known at the time as the MacDonald Tankard, was staged in 1927, when a team from Yellow Grass, skipped by an O. Barkwell, won the championship. While most of the Tankard’s champions have come from the big cities of Regina and Saskatoon, a number of teams have come from smaller, rural communities. One of the most successful teams in the Tankard’s history is the famed Richardson rink. Ernie, Arnold, Garnet (Sam) and Wes Richardson won the title in 1959, 1960 and 1962, while Ernie, Arnold, and Sam Richardson were joined by Mel Perry in 1963. They went on to win the Brier national championship and the world championship in each year. The Richardsons curled out of Regina, but they had extensive roots in southeast Saskatchewan. Ernie, Garnet and Wes were born in Stoughton, while Arnold was born in Estevan.

Three teams competing out of Estevan have won the Tankard. In 1983, an entry skipped by Kirk Ziola, with third Jim Packet, second Monte Ziola and lead John Grundy, won the event. Six years later, Packet skipped the provincial championship team, with third Bob Doerr, second Lloyd Schmidt and lead Dallas Duce. Then in 1997, Packet was again the skip, and Duce was the second. Jeff Mosley was the third and Ken Loeffler was the lead. Estevan last hosted the Tankard in 1994, when Doug Harcourt, competing out of Quill Lake, won the event. Kevin Kalthoff was the third, Greg Harcourt was the second and Brian Wempe was the lead. In last year’s Tankard in Tisdale, Adam Casey, competing out of the Highland Curling Club in Regina, defeated Steve Laycock 11-3 in the final. Laycock had won the previous three years. Other members of the Casey rink were third Catlin Schneider, second Shaun Meachem, lead Dustin Kidby and coach Jamie Schneider.
