Gustafson places third in hairstyling at Skills Canada nationals Becca Gustafson recently made her third appearance at the Skills Canada national competition for hairstyling, this

Kittens, kittens, kittens, yes once again we have the cutest kittens in town. This little girl came to us from 1700 Block First Ave., she was only 3-4 days old. We are lucky to Ànd a foster mom for her, isn’t she gorgeous? This little girl was under someone’s truck behind the wheel. She is fortunate that the lady heard something and checked before driving away. She is such a cutie.

This is our Cookie with her four kittens that were born June 2. Cookie came to us just 2 days before she gave birth. Some young boys found her & carried her down to us. Cookie is just a teenager herself but she is the nicest and best mom ever.

This is our little boy, we have 2. They are very healthy and playful.

Remember, we waive the adoption fees on all our kittens and ask only for a deposit on their spay or neuter, after proof this has been done you receive your deposit back. Neuter and spaying is so important so that we don’t have so many unwanted kittens and puppies.

time competing in the postsecondary category and winning a bronze medal. The competition was held in Quebec City June 1 to 4. Gustafson competed in the high school division in both Grade 10 and Grade 12, winning second place in her senior year. “It was a really great experience,” she said. “Even having competed at that level before, it was still exciting.” Gustafson, who works at Chez Perih hair salon in Estevan, attended Richards Beauty College and Esthetics this year, and was the sole hairstyling of the college at competition. Laura Knoblauch of Weyburn also attended, representing the aesthetics aspect of the college. The competition for Gustafson began with opening ceremonies on Wednesday, June 1. Thursday brought two different tests: first was progressive men’s avant garde, which Gustafson described as “really out there, high fashion style.” The competition lasted three-anda-half hours, and was a test of competitors creativity through cut, colour, style and beard design. Thursday’s second test was men’s classical

The second day of competition began with ladies’ competition creative style with colour enhancement, which lasted four hours. Gustafson’s final test was ladies’ competition hair by night with hair pieces and ornamentation. This test required the use of a specified number and length of hair extensions. Closing ceremonies took place Saturday, June 4. “It was really great to be able to see the different skill levels of other competitors,” said Gustafson. “It was a really rewarding experience for me.”

It was also Gustafson’s first time visiting Quebec City, and she enjoyed the city and the language. Also while attending the competition, Gustafson met up with some teachers and students from the Estevan Comprehensive School. “ M r s . M a c k , M r. Wright and Ms. Johns were there too, and it was nice to see them and to have their support,” said Gustafson. Before attending the Skills competition, Gustafson and Knoblauch held several fundraisers in an effort to help alleviate some of the financial cost of the trip. Gustafson said that she and Knoblauch would both like to thank everyone who attended the fundraisers.

One-on-one with Jordan Baker Michel Cyrenne is the executive director for the Estevan and District Board of Tourism Trade and Commerce. He has been with the Estevan TTC for more than three years. What is your professional background? I was working in economic development prior to moving here, regional economic development in the Cypress Hills area. I was involved more on a volunteer basis with the Chamber of Commerce, as well as a couple of tourism development agencies, so this position is a lot of what I was doing previously. This being a Chamber of Commerce, it’s contracted to do economic development in terms of development. It kind of touched on many of things I had been doing. Do you feel you have some responsibility to ensure prosperity in the businesses here? Oh yeah. Our vision statement states we’re here to foster leadership and health in the community, the business community. We do take it upon ourselves to act as a leader in the community, as it pertains to attracting development and business in the city and ensuring that the existing business community not only remains in Estevan but prospers in Estevan. As a leader, does that mean providing direction for business here? In some cases, depending on what exactly we’re looking at, at the moment. We promote the community to outside businesses and outside travellers, encouraging them to come to Estevan, visit Estevan or move to Estevan to work or come here to do business. Also, if any business is looking to do any expansions or looking to do business in Estevan, we have a variety of information to help them come to their decision.

The EBEX Awards were on Saturday after more than a decade hiatus. Why start those again? Things like the Business Excellence Awards dinner (are) where we recognize the value of our business community and we celebrate the commitments they have made and what they’ve contributed to our local economy. That’s exactly why we put on that event, because we know what Estevan has. It’s definitely one of our province’s and one of our country’s strongest economies. We feel that the business community deserves to be applauded and respected for what they’ve done in our community. Bringing the EBEX Awards back now, was that just a matter of timing or more of a matter of getting it organized? Well, in the time that I’ve been here, it’s definitely been something that I’ve recognized as something significant missing from our Chamber of Commerce, especially because we do have as strong of business community as we have, it’s a segment of our economy that needs to be recognized. You get the workforce that they provide, the employee opportunities they provide, or be it the financial support of the community that they provide for things like the new arena. I’m sure, as we’ll see in the coming months, in terms of flood relief, we know we have a business community that steps up to that sort of thing. We just really felt that we need to step up and recognize them for what they provide for everybody else in the community. Do you see the EBEX Awards becoming an annual event? At the very least every other year. The Weyburn Chamber of Commerce does theirs every other year, on the even-numbered years. Initially our thought was to do it on opposite years as Weyburn. That way we will nominate our award winners to the provincial ABEX Awards, and if we’re doing it opposite years as Weyburn, that will ensure that every year southeast Saskatchewan is represented at the provincial award show. We did get quite a good response to the first show, and we’ve had some comments that

people would like to see it every year. We will be sending a survey out to all the attendees at the event so we can get a feel for where they thought we can improve, and get their thoughts on it. Whether we should do it every year or continue with the original thought of doing it every other year. I guess if the people here want to do it every year; then that’s something the TTC is agreeable to? Well, we do have a business community here for it. We have well in excess of 700 businesses in town. We’ve got a number of prominent individuals who should be inducted into the hall of fame. We were able to induct three over the past weekend, and without a doubt there are individuals in this community who on their own have had a tremendous impact. What was the response from people at the Saturday night award show? For the most part very good. I think people were surprised at the calibre of show we were able to put on. We did have a lot of help from—not only our staff and our staff did a great job in terms of preparing the event and making (Spectra Place) look like it did—the City staff, who did a great job as far as preparing the meal and everything. But we also had a lot of help from other chamber managers from around the province that I consulted with, as far as getting their opinions on how they’ve done things. The response we’ve had has been phenomenal. People are very happy with the event. A lot of people told me things along the line as, ‘It’s about time it comes back,’ and ‘It’s important to recognize the business community.’ We’ve had nothing but great comments. Had people

come to you before, saying they’d like to see the EBEX start up again? We’d had a little bit. I think more, once we announced that we were bringing it back, people started coming and saying, ‘I’ve been thinking that we should be doing this. I’ve thought for a lot of years that we should.’ But prior to (the announcement) I did have it brought up to me a few times, as people know that it happens in other communities in the province. We definitely have a lot of support from the community for bringing it back. Do the businesses themselves have much responsibility in making EBEX happen? They definitely have a role to play as well, in term of nominating businesses. be it self-nomination. A lot of businesses nominate themselves for awards. A lot of employees nominate their businesses, so we do depend on the business community to submit the nomination forms. And of course, financially, to put on the event we had a number of tremendous sponsors that made the whole event possible because it’s quite costly to put on something of the calibre that we did put on, and it’s entirely due to the sponsorship.

Stupid is loosely defined To those who say that technology has ruined the spelling and grammar skills of my generation: I find myself wondering what you base this on? Studies? Test scores? Interviews? Regardless of what method by which you obtained these findings, I’m here two tell you it’s all false. Students these days are just as eloquent as students of decades past. If anything, I’d say our long days staring at computer or cell phone screens have made us more better able to express ourselves great in a good way. Our math scores may seem low to you, but consider how many of us have grown up with calculators to use to solve each and every problem. Mental math is a thing of the past, it’s obsolete and these scores are inconsequential in today’s world. We spent our entire days communicating with each other, so I’d argue that we’re actually more better at communicating than past students. How can constantly texting or chatting be hurting our learning? Teachers are always saying that reading makes us smarter! I’ve talked to my teechers and they said they never seen anyone do better in school than kids in my class. See, thoughs who think were dumb? Clearly were just as smart as past students. Looking at test scores can be misleading. I can be totally way smart even though my test scores can be low sometimes. But it gets hard too study when I’m on FB. But Sara posted her knew bb pics, so obviously i needed to check

Do you support the recent public sector strike action?

Strikes can be effective in the private sector but there is no place for them in public jobs. First of all, public sector employees have no business unionizing. Public employees work for the people of Canada. They are accountable to us, and we should be deciding what’s best for our public service employees. Canada Post workers hit the pavement and everyone suffers. Canada Post is a necessary service and not just because I like my Time magazine to arrive in a timely fashion. Businesses across the country need things moving through the mail system. That doesn’t just mean large corporations but small businesses that run on thin budgets and can’t afford weeks of delays in the mail. The union may say that if they’re so necessary, they should be paid accordingly, but most employees in a union are paid well enough. Canada Post workers and Saskatchewan teachers, who have also recently held strikes, are no exception. They should be thankful they are lucky enough to be in a union with pensions, good salaries and job security. These people’s salaries are public information, we can see if they are underpaid, and we can decide if they aren’t being compensated properly. Unions are in place to protect workers from poor working conditions, being taken advantage of and terminated without good cause. Strikes are never about any of this. Strikes happen because people who are already getting paid well decide they can take advantage of the system and don’t care to live within their means. Strikes and unions are completely unnecessary. There are many professions that don’t have any form of unionization. Other jobs receive raises based on merit, not simply seniority. In non-union jobs, there is competition. Unions simply eliminate competition within the workplace, the workers get complacent, and when they feel they deserve more there is a strike. Strikes are a great way for people to flex their bargaining power. Striking as part of a united front gives people more power to fight for the benefits and pay they deserve. It is collective movements like strikes that get results, because business leaders have no choice but to hear what those who strike have to say. Looking at the teacher’s province-wide strike, it is not surprising that these teachers sought more pay. Teachers often feel pressure to organize extracurricular clubs or to coach school sports teams, but were not being paid for the hours they dedicate to their activities. In many other professions, when employees work overtime, they are paid for their efforts. Teachers in the province have worked this long, even without a contract, because of their love of teaching and their refusal to fail the students who count on them to show up to work. I recognize that strikes are never the perfect solution. However, my biggest issue with strikes is that those slackers who don’t work as hard as others will still reap the same rewards. For example, there are always going to be brutal teachers. I’m sure everyone, regardless of which high school they attended, had a teacher who clearly only wanted the job because of the hours and the two summer months off. Teachers like these certainly do not deserve the raise offered to the teachers who genuinely care about students and about extracurricular activities, but because of unions, these teachers will get the same benefits and raise offered to teachers who deserve them. My proposal, though I recognize its flaws and idealism, would be to have a third party panel hired to evaluate workers and determine those who deserve to be rewarded for their efforts, while weeding out those who are an insult to their profession. Obviously the perfect third party panel would be agreed on by both the strikers and would be lovely and unbiased, willing to work diligently in office places, classrooms, whatever, to find out who’s the best and make sure they are recognized for their efforts. I’m not saying to base, for example, teacher evaluations on test scores. Despite the flaws of strikes and the obvious setbacks, I remain in favour and fully support those who believe striking is their only means of being heard in their workplaces.

Museum gets prepped for activity-filled summer Activities are getting underway at the Souris Valley Museum. It’s shaping up to be a busy summer as the museum will be hosting a number of activity days and hold family days every Saturday, all summer. Pioneer Fun Day is this Saturday and it gives people an opportunity to step back a few generations and see what things were like without some of the tools we enjoy today. Katrina Howick, the museum curator, is organizing each of the activities with her team of interns who will have a hand in running them. The pioneer day will feature lots of activities like crafts and wooden toy making, while also featuring tours and a schoolhouse re-enactment. There will be a fundraiser barbecue in the afternoon and people are encouraged to dress up in period attire. “It’s just a good day to come out and enjoy what the museum has to offer,” said Howick. The schoolhouse replica also contains many artifacts today’s children haven’t had a lot of experience with, like the strap. “It’s those things that modern day children don’t have to deal with. It gives people an appreciation of some of the comforts of modern life. There are things they had to do to get (by). It’s inspiring.” Pioneer Family Day will showcase technology from earlier periods, things that may have been considered stateof-the-art just a few generations ago. One thing Howick said they will be showing off is the cook car. She explained that the car was a fast-food restaurant that pulled up to you. “It would go around to the workers in the fields and they could sit in the car and eat their lunch.” Hands on History days are every Saturday beginning in July and run to the end of August. These days will allow participants to really get into the spirit of history by learning how many chores were done. Howick and her staff will be working through different activities with children, showing how things were down in days gone by, like butter churning and ice cream and

toffee making. While the Pioneer Fun Days are more of a drop-in and participate kind of set-up, Hands on History is more of an activity, group-based event. Howick said those days are more linear, and the pioneer days are more like a free flow. There are also two pioneer day camps scheduled, one in July and one in August. The camps are each a week long

and expose those children attending to some of the chores they may have had to do years ago through crafts and heritage games. There may also be mine tours that would give a good historical back drop to this region. All money raised from these events goes to supplies for the activities and the rest goes back to the museum’s collection.

Community gathering, the Canada Day staple Mark your calendar for Canada Day’s celebration in Bienfait hits next Friday. This July 1 celebration will have the staples that people have learned to love from the Bienfait day of celebrating everything that is Canada. The Bienfait Centennial Parks and Recreation Board is again organizing the event, getting everything ready from the bright-and-early pancake breakfast to night-closing fireworks display. Kendra Reed, secretary/treasurer of the board, said each organizer takes the reins of the different events. One of the biggest draws has been the annual firemen versus farmers slo-pitch match, but due to the wet conditions experienced in the last number of weeks, that has been cancelled. “That’s always been there, since July 1 (celebrations) started,” said Reed. The teams will need to look forward to battling for bragging rights at the next rematch during the 2012 Canada Day festivities. The slo-pitch tournament has also been cancelled due to the poor

a.m. and head over the arena, where it ends. “Our parade is usually

“People will line up pretty early to watch it.” Judging of the floats

will take place prior to the parade before, with ribbons going to both floats and to children who dress up their bikes to ride down the parade route as well. Over the course of the afternoon, there will be a number of games to play. Reed is organizing the area devoted to kids’ games. For the adults, there is bingo and crown and anchor, with money to be won during both games. The food and drink concessions are open in the afternoon. All of those events, and the concessions have been moved into the curling rink. On July 1, the Bienfait Coalfields Historical Museum will be open to the public. “This is the one time i t ’s c o m p l e t e l y o p e n where you don’t have to make arrangements,” said Reed. The museum showcases the mining history in this area of the province. The fireworks display will be put on once again by Paul Carroll who has done it for the many years. All profits from the celebration go to the parks and rec board, which then allocates to the various facilities and groups like the Bienfait Memorial Arena.

Surgeries to be moved from Saskatchewan to Alberta PROVINCIAL REGINA - Saskatchewan — considered the birth place of medicare — is turning to a private Calgary company for help to cut surgery wait lists. Regina and Saskatoon health regions have contracted Surgical Centres Inc. of Calgary to do some day surgeries. The Saskatoon Regional Health Authority says the company will perform cataract surgery, pediatric dental surgery as well as knee and shoulder repairs outside the hospital starting later this year. Surgical Centres will do ear, nose and throat, orthopedic, and dental surgeries in Regina. Health officials in both regions say the move will free up hospital operating room space for more complex cases. The health regions are using third-parties to help meet the province’s goal that no one waits more than three months for elective surgery by 2014. *** REGINA - The rotating strike by specialized health workers in Saskatchewan continues. Union president Cathy Dickson says about 400 Health Sciences Association members will remain off the job today in Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert. It’s the seventh week of job action by the union over its contract impasse

with the Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations. Wages are the main issue in the dispute. The union represents paramedics, hospital pharmacists, physical therapists and other health professionals. NATIONAL OTTAWA - Starting tomorrow, First Nations members will be able to take their own local governments to task for human rights violations. A three-year transition period has come to an end and the Canadian Human Rights Act now will apply to First Nations governments, as well as Ottawa. That means aboriginal people can challenge their own bands under the act if they think living conditions on reserves are discriminatory. But David Langtry, acting chief of the Canadian Human Rights Commission, says he’s not sure whether the change will bring about an onslaught of lawsuits. The limit will not apply to senators who were appointed before October 2008. The government is also proposing a framework for senate elections in the provinces, based on Alberta’s system. President Felipe Calderon said Tuesday that federal police have caught one of Mexico’s most-wanted drug lords. A posting by Calderon on his Twitter account called the arrest “a big blow” to the drug cartels. ***The U.N. General Assembly has voted unanimously to give Ban Ki-moon a second term as secretary-general. The seasons of life Today I travelled back to Saskatchewan to be present at a funeral. Coming home for such occasions is hard, but is a very real part of life. The funeral was for my friend’s mother. My friend was one of my best friends throughout high school. The funeral was beautiful and my friend’s mother was remembered by so many. The church was packed to overflowing and extra chairs had to be brought out. Her life and her legacy were, indeed, celebrated. She was a woman who impacted so many on so many levels. As a young teenage girl, she was the “cool” mum, who we all liked to be around. She made jokes, listened to our teenage drama, welcomed us into her home and always made us feel comfortable. She wasn’t afraid of correcting us or letting us know if we’d crossed the line. She was gentle, very pretty and oh, so very kind. Today, I watched my friend stand in front of hundreds of people and speak about her mother. As I watched my friend, so poised, so elegant and so well spoken, I saw her mother in her. I saw the beauty she had passed on to her. It was almost like I could see the life lessons she had taught her, dancing around her. Her mother died earlier than anyone should die.

She was forever young, vibrant and full of life. Part of her beauty was seen through her devotion to her family. Family was everything to her and it was obvious. She was also a loyal friend and mentor to many in her world. To have known her was an honour. As my friend spoke, I was so proud her and the way she honoured the woman she called “mom.” My heart ached for her loss. Having lost my father only a year and a half ago, it was almost as if I could feel her pain. That deep, almost physical ache, that clenches our heart at every thought and every memory. As she spoke I thought of my own grief and how one year ago I couldn’t have imagined feeling any different than I did in the moment of loss. As my friend continued to speak, I was reminded of the seasons of life and thought of this: “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.” We all know there is a time for everything. Death is never easy and loss hurts more than words can express. I have learned that it is true, that with time, the season will change and the pain does lessen. The will to carry on, somehow finds its way back and with that we begin to live our lives again. To anyone who has experienced loss, I think you know what I mean.

A: I contacted several collectors, and they seem to agree that your kit is probably worth about $15. *** Q: I have a 78-rpm Walt Disney record album of “Pinocchio” that was recorded from the motion picture soundtrack. The album, which was originally given to my husband in 1942, is in excellent condition. I am curious about its value. -- Peggy, Sun City West, Ariz. A: RCA issued the record album in 1940. The first edition featured a die-cut design on the cover with additional illustrations from the production inside the album. The second edition, which was marketed later that same year, was issued without either the die-cut or illustrations. According to the “Official Price Guide to Disney Collectibles” by Ted Hake, the first issue is worth in the $40 to $150 range, and the second, $25 to $85. With records, as with most collectibles, condition is extremely important when determining values. *** Q: I have a Coca-Cola child’s raincoat, size 5, with hood, and marked “Coca-Cola Made in Taiwan.” Do you have any information on this? -- Bellinda, Rutledge, Ala. A: Coca-Cola has produced and given away premiums throughout its history. One of the better references documenting Coca-Cola premiums is “Coca-Cola Collectibles Price Guide” by Allan Petretti (Krause, $49.99). It features more than 4,500 photos of collectibles with current values, and has been considered the “Collector’s and Dealer’s Bible” for more than three decades. I did not find a raincoat in this reference, but it should give you an idea of current values for other Coca-Cola items. *** Q: I have two Woman’s Day magazines from the autumn of 1941. Naturally Sweet My sister, Marcia, loves to garden. She generously shares her plants with me. Recently, she gave me a stevia plant as a gift. I use the leaves of this naturally sweet herb to sweeten a variety of drinks. It’s also available commercially in a granular form like sugar. Stevia is a not-so-new sweetener that recently made its way into the U.S. market. Although Stevia has been sold in the U.S. for many years as a dietary supplement, it was not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. Now that the FDA has declared its active ingredient -- rebaudioside A -- as “generally accepted as safe,” it is showing up in products like tabletop sweetener packets. PureVia (from PepsiCo and a subsidiary of Merisant, Whole Earth Sweeteners) and Truvia (from Coca-Cola and Cargill), along with some flavored waters and lowercalorie soda and fruit drinks, now contain stevia. Leaves from the stevia plant are steeped in water and then processed into crystalline form. These crystals create a sweet taste in the mouth, but are calorie-free when digested. As a sweetener, stevia’s extract is 250 to 300 times sweeter than sugar. This means only a very tiny amount is needed to add sweetness to a food or beverage. As with any sweetener, there are challenges to us-

ing stevia in food products. Stevia is naturally bitter, but tastes sweet after some delay. Although it is temperature and acid stable, the natural bitterness and intense sweetness are challenges the food industry will have to overcome. Consumers will need to taste stevia and decide for themselves how well they like it. Another possible challenge is the price. Currently, it is expensive to use stevia or its active ingredient in foods. Products containing this naturally derived sweetener may be out of many consumers’ price range. Like other sugar substitutes, consumers need to watch for any warnings or concerns with stevia. It has been classified as safe, but it doesn’t hurt to try it out slowly to see what effect it has on individual taste and digestion. This recipe for Fruit Sorbet uses stevia instead of sugar to sweeten the dessert. FRUIT SORBET You’ll need an ice cream machine for this delicious recipe. You can use any fruit juice blend concentrate of your choice instead of raspberry. This recipe also works well if you substitute one (12.3 ounce) box of silken tofu for the yogurt, along with 1 cup of milk or soymilk. 2 cups plain low-fat

yogurt 1/4 cup milk 1/2 cup unsweetened raspberry juice blend concentrate, thawed 1 tablespoon orange juice concentrate 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3/4 teaspoon stevia sugar substitute 1 banana (optional) Blend all ingredients together in a blender until smooth. Pour into the container of an ice-cream machine, and process according to directions. Makes 4 servings. Make Cheap and Sweet “Glam” Cleaning Gloves It’s easy and fun to dress up drab latex rubber gloves with perky cuffs. Add rickrack, bows or sparkling brooches for extra bling, and your household cleaning chores won’t seem so humdrum. Your kids can help with the fabric choice, measuring and cutting. Once you get going, make several pairs. They’re fun to tuck in a basket of items for a shower or housewarming gift for a new family on the block. A whimsical homemade gift from you and your kids! Here’s the stuff you’ll need: --One pair of rubber gloves with cuffs in the quality and color you prefer, available at grocery and discount stores for a dollar or two. --1/4 yard of oilcloth or water-resistant stiff fabric that is at least 36 inches wide. I found big-polka-dot fabric at IKEA. I wanted to use blue and red yardage for summer tablecloths, so I added extra fabric for the gloves. --Measuring tape, m a r k e r, s c i s s o r s a n d straight pins --Sewing machine and thread. --A glue-gun to attach decorative add-ons such as

ribbon, bows, rickrack and buttons if you wish. Or pin on a brooch. You also may decide to cut the edges with pinking shears. HERE’S THE FUN: Directions for one glove: 1. Trim off the edge of the glove and make the cuff shorter for a comfortable fit. 2. Cut fabric 4-inches wide by at least 18-inches long. If you prefer fuller ruffles, make it longer. 3. Let your child mark 2-inch intervals along the edge and then make small knife pleats at each mark. Pin and sew the pleats in place with stitches running close to the edge. Remove pins. Note: Once I got the hang of it, I created the pleats one by one as I sewed. 4. Bring the 4-inch edges of the fabric right sides together, pin and sew a 1/4-inch seam to create a circular, pleated fabric ready to attach to the glove. 5. Ease the pleated cuff wrong side out over the right side of the glove and pin in place. (I placed the 4-inch-

long seam above the thumb side of the glove.) If the pleated cuff is too large, add another pleat. Remove pins as you sew 1/2-inch from the edge. Turn cuff over the seam and fluff the pleats. Repeat with second glove. For extra pizzazz, use your imagination and items in your craft box to decorate the gloves with add-ons. A glue gun works quickly. Macular Degeneration Progress Can be Slowed DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have the dry type of macular degeneration. I take PreserVision with lutein tablets twice a day. I hear lutein is very good for my eyes, and I would like to take more than the 10 mg a day that I get in my tablets. I don’t know how much is safe. My doctor said he didn’t know. Will macular degeneration leave me completely blind? How long will it be before I cannot see anymore? -- C.B. ANSWER: The macula is a small, round area in the center of the retina, the layer at the back of the eye that transmits incoming images to the brain so we can see. The macula is essential for clear, central vision, the kind needed to read, to drive and to recognize faces. Off-tothe-side vision remains. You won’t go completely blind. Furthermore, dry macular degeneration most often advances gradually. It’s the more common variety, accounting for 90 percent of cases. It can stay at its present level for years, even for life. Wet macular degeneration comes about from the growth of blood vessels beneath the retina. Those vessels are fragile and leak fluid. It tends to advance more rapidly. Currently no cure exists for dry macular degeneration. A combination of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene (or vitamin A), zinc and copper appears to slow moderate macular degeneration’s progression to a more advanced stage. Your PreserVision is one such preparation. Lutein is a plant product that might aid in delaying the advance of dry macular degeneration. At this very moment, a large study is taking place to ascertain the place of lutein in the treatment of this common eye condition. The amount of lutein being tested in the study is 10 mg a day. Lutein appears to be a very safe substance, but I would stick with the 10 mg dose until the present study defines lutein’s place and its optimum dose. The booklet on macular

The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority has advised that the combined water release from Boundary Dam and Rafferty Dam will rise to 720 cubic meters per second. There is the possibility of additional increases due to the expected rainfall in Estevan and surrounding areas. Highway 47 South and Highway 18 West are closed until further notice. The Highway 47 South detour is from Highway 39 East to grid 703 and appropriate signage is in place. Highway 47 North is still allowing travel with one vehicle at a time and Highway 39 East remains open at this time. Estevan Police Service and Fire Rescue Service require residents to stay away from affected areas including Highway 47 South, Highway 18 West, and Rafferty Dam Road. Anyone caught disobeying barricades or road closures will be charged. For further information on road closures contact the Highway Hotline before travelling. Additionally, residents should be aware that the Áood waters are extremely dangerous. Floating debris and other water hazards above and beneath the surface are dangerous for all watercraft. All power lines are energized and should be considered dangerous. At the moment, power lines are very close to the water surface so watercraft could come into contact with energized lines. Chances of rescue are minimal. The City of Estevan continues to pump water out of Willow Park Greens Trailer Park. SaskPower has reinstated the power to the trailer park, however it will remain evacuated. The Estevan Police Service has advised that there have not been any reports of looting for vandalism at this point at the trailer park. The City of Estevan Evacuation Shelter continues to accept Roche Percee evacuee registrations at the Souris Valley Aquatic and Leisure Centre. Please use the south entrance. For information about evacuees contact 634-1876 . Currently the evacuation centre has registered 203 families from Estevan and 31 families from Roche Percee with only 40 people staying at the congregate shelter at the Souris Valley Aquatic and Leisure Centre. The facility is receiving donations of goods which is greatly appreciated. Please call 1-800-4181111 for the Saskatchewan Flood Donation Line if you are interested in donating to the cause. The Water Treatment Plant is fully operational and there has NOT been a Boil Water Advisory. The City LandÀll is open and accessible. Kidsport is a children’s charity that is dedicated to assisting children of families facing financial obstacles to participate in community sports programs. In 2010, Estevan Kidsport assisted 92 children and paid out over $13,300 in financial assistance. Baked Banana Pudding This easy-to-put-together dessert will please kids of all ages. 24 (2 1/2-inch) graham cracker squares 3 cups (3 medium) sliced bananas 2 (4-serving) packages Jell-O sugar-free vanilla cookand-serve pudding mix 1 1/3 cups Carnation Nonfat Dry Milk Powder 2 1/3 cups water 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 6 egg whites 1 cup Splenda Granular 1. Preheat oven to 325 F. Spray 8-by-12-inch baking dish with butter-flavored cooking spray. Evenly arrange 12 graham cracker squares in baking dish, then 1 1/2 cups banana slices over top. 2. In large saucepan, combine pudding mixes, milk powder and water. Cook over medium heat until mixture thickens and starts to boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Spoon half of hot mixture evenly over bananas. Arrange 10 graham cracker squares evenly over hot pudding and remaining 1 1/2 cups banana slices over top. Spoon remaining hot pudding over bananas. 3. In large bowl, beat egg whites with an electric mixer on HIGH until soft peaks form. Add Splenda and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract. Continue beating on HIGH until stiff peaks form. Spread meringue evenly over top, sealing to edges. Crush remaining 2 graham cracker squares into fine crumbs; sprinkle evenly over meringue. 4. Bake 25 minutes or until meringue is golden. Place baking dish on wire rack; let set for 30 minutes. Refrigerate at least 1 hour. Cut into 8 servings. HINT: A self-seal sandwich bag works great for crushing graham crackers. • Each serving: 210 calories, 2g fat, 10g protein 38g carb., 289mg sodium, 161mg calcium, 2g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 1 Starch/Carb., 1 Fruit, 1/2 Fat-Free Milk; Carb Choices: 2 1/2.
