REHABILITATION AND REGENERATION of an obsolete industrial site for the Singularity University chapter in Seville

MASTERS DEGREE FINAL PROJECT

Seville, Spain /2015-2016/ Built in the 50s, this cigar factory occupies a privileged place in the city. Located on the bank of the river, it is already part of the city image and has the opportunity to stand as a symbol within it. The rehabilitation of this obsolete area for a university use aims to generate a focus of mobility and economy in this point where the river can be used as a fluvial connection with the historial and economic center, and so that we promote the ingrowth of the city, creating public space and opening the city to the river.

Strategy

The main image of the reclaimed industrial complex towards the river is modified by the introduction of two overlapping sheets, presented as a thin and abstract line that frames the preexistences without trying to competing with them. Roofing of the new building contains public space that connects the existing buildings, creating continuity between them and giving the city a privileged relation space. Inside the overlap between the two sheets, the main program of offices and coworking spaces is located.


The ground floor is released from private spaces, placing public program in this area to promote the activation of the public space proposed for the city. This public space is characterized by a large landscaped area to create shade and resting and recreation areas, accompanied by the lower sheet as a pergola that covers the main pathways. A descent approaches the user to a terraced space open towards the river.

The temporary residence is located within the main industrial building, on the top floor. The sleeping spaces are organized contained in a structure hung from the existing main structure, creating shared galleries and highlighting the quality of the interior recovered industrial space. The lower sheet covers the public space below as it also creates in its roofing a public space that connects the park with the existing buildings, so that a new public access to the complex and to the building is created. In its side towards the river, the private areas are located, such as coworking and meeting areas or offices.

The execution of the project design as an abstract element, linear, light, as a thin line that connects the existing buildings and allows three levels of activity, new access and approaching with the existing buildings and landscape, makes it necessary to combine structure-construction-installations towards the same goals, creating a system that works as a one and integrates all parties equally. The overall system must also be able to respond to situations of dialogue and encounter with the existing building, without losing its own identity but having enough flexibility to adapt to changing environmental conditions. Bigger installations that require more space for routing horizontally would go through an underground tunnel. Therefore, throughout the new construction in will be only necessary space for electricity and telecommunications facilities. The remaining facilities are integrated in space by an element that allows the layout vertically every 24 meters from the underground gallery. The construction system is dry element-based as thin superposed layers. The modulation that has been present in the four treated areas (project, structure, construction and installations) is key in achieving the final formation of a single system, and allows systematization, based on profiles and equal and serial arranged modularly elements.

ARTISANS HOUSE-WORKSHOP

San Luis neighbourhood. Seville, Spain. /2013/ Regeneration project of an obsolete site in the Historic Center of Seville. Given it is an empty and privileged place it has become a playing court where children of the nearest schools go every day, filling the gap of public space in the densified city center. In this artisans neighbourhood, claimed place for young entrepreneurs, the generation of a place that enables to create a community where work, residence, selling and public space cohabit is searched. Besides, all this should be possible keeping the actual purpose of the site, giving children a place to play and stay, and creating a new street crossing through what was supposed to be private.

OCCUPATION STRATEGY

Three layers. Intermediate platform that stimulates relations between residents and visitors, being possible to share work spaces or combine residences, increasing or decreasing the space that each one has. “THE PLACE FOR THE ARTIST” as the only truly private space, in the highest part, creating a privileged place where to withdraw, and generating a form that blends with the characteristic skyline of the city center.

URBAN REGENERATION

Plaza de Armas, Seville, Spain. /2015/ In the west side, in order to defend the city from flooding from the river, many walls have been built by the riverside, and they have ended to form a physical and psychological barrier that radically divides the historic center and the river. Today, a seven meters high difference, many constructions and the high traffic density, make it impossible to even guess the water a few meters from the edge. The riverside is closed to the people. The urban intervention has the aim to reinsert and reintegrate this zone, mixing public and private uses, creating social housing, public and private equipment. All this conected with public space along the riverside, can turn the city face to its river.

Despite the exclusively private use of this project, the opening of it is intended by an intermediate space open to the public space, its core, which runs through the building by a continuous ramp space and allows to observe the program inserted. Through the private program a new and qualified public access to the park is created.

CULTURAL CONTAINER shipyards rehabilitation Seville, Spain. /2014/ With Cintia Montero García Rehabilitation of an obsolete industrial edification of the shipyards in Seville for cultural purposes. The rehabilitation is conceived keeping the constructive and structural essence, and taking advantage of it. By entering a confined space as a greenhouse in the central span hung from the main structure, the whole edification has now the equipment facilities for the development of different activities throughout the area.

As constructive strategy, an outer perimeter piping is introduced to allow to accommodate the technical facilities, reaching all areas of the ship without altering the interior space. CITY “AS FOUND”. RECYCLING OF AN INTERRUPTED URBAN DEVELOPMENT Campo de las Beatas, Alcalá de Guadaira. Seville, Spain. /2014/ With Cintia Montero García

Research of an analogous situation to the exhibition “Castles in the Air” by Hans Haacke. Work chosen to be exposed in the 1st Conference Interrupted Cities, Instant obsolescence of the suburbs organised by the Investigation Group HUM-666 “Ciudad, Arquitectura y Patrimonio Contemporáneos”. An interrupted urban development is one that, due to the abrupt and sudden end of the housing bubble in 2007, is left unfinished, in an early state of implementation. The result of the collapse of the spanish economic system are large semi-urbanized territories, usually fitted with some urban infrastructure, where the construction of the buildings has been interrupted or has not even begun, leaving this developments as cities void of identity, victim of these “forced” and sick growth. This theoric work aims to analyse graphically the actual condition of one of the cases that is closed with a wall in all its perimeter, but this wall has been broken by the people in order to use this place. DRAWING THE CITY

SCALE ANALYSIS: FROM TERRITORIAL TO URBAN

Guadalquivir river: from Seville to Sanlucar, Spain. To address the complexity of the understanding of the city and the area to which it belongs, the study of the city of Seville in three different scales is proposed: regional, metropolitan and urban. In each, we identify the elements that characterize the site and the relation of the city with the territory and the environment, trying to identify those points of identity and rescue them.


TERRITORIAL SCALE We define the territorial scale based on the main backbone and its economic, productive and political-social connection: the Guadalquivir River, ranging from the city itself, seeing it as an infrastructure over communication.


METROPOLITAN SCALE Topography differences between east and west of the city let see how cities and suburbs that develop on each side are radically different. West, the rugged terrain difficult to build communication infrastructures with Sevilla, so a connected network of small roads is generated based to a primary and only way of connection with the city. On the other side, the softness of geography in east part, allows the emergence of urban centers and a larger entity, with its own historic center and individual connections midrange with Sevilla as well as a greater supply of public transport. Two radically opposed positions, for the same city, separated by a floodable crops.

URBAN SCALE Approaching the scale of the city, we identify a gap between the historical and consolidated city and the growth of the west, as a result of the river floods. Nowadays an enclosed area of crops between two cities and two high speed roads remains. The non-occupation of that reminiscence, the edge treatment and several pedestrian connection bridges between both ends is proposed.

This graphical analysis is intended to assess the watchtowers of Cรกdiz as elements of cultural heritage and collective identity. This claim clashes with the lack of information and accessibility to them. After the studies and research carried out, there have been obtained different views that have been until now ignored, such as the perception of them from the urban space, or their position in the city and its relation to the traditional house, cases presented here. While these new insights provide arguments both for and against the cataloging of these buildings as heritage as a whole, to determine its intrinsic value is complex, for being the cultural heritage an area of knowledge with a positive diffuse boundaries.

08 MASTERPLAN PARQUE CERRO JUANA LAINEZ

Tegucigalpa, Honduras. /2012/ FIRST PRIZE with Alt+Q architecture studio Masterplan of a central area in Tegucigalpa, including public space and botanical garden, conferences hall, sports facilities, hotel, auditorium, museum, amphitheater, parking and a visitor center. The tasks carried as a part of the team focus on the creation and design of the central public space, conceived as a succession of tiered platforms that adapt to the existing topography, so that the environmental impact of the intervention is minimized. Furthermore, each platform is associated to a special theme, resulting on a public space inserted in the vegetation and nature with panoramic views of the city of Tegucigalpa, providing to it a place where events, buying, art, meetings and leisure can take place. The proposal has minimum occupation of the MAXIMUM BUILD AREA place, following the main bases of sustainability, such as occupation in height to a minimum land use, reuse of products and adaptation to the environment in which it is inserted. Creating an abstract image according to the landscape of windmills, some colored fabrics protect from sand, wind and sun, while are presented as an ephemeral installation, filling with color and textures this strip on the beach, both in the sand and in the water by the occupation of windsurfers. HOUSE WITHOUT FUNCTION

/2016/ 120 Hours competition with Fernando Cruzado//Gabriel Rodríguez Is it possible to imagine architecture without site and program? If so how can they complement initial spatial qualities? Through the task of designing a house without function, architectural choices would define the project based on pure spatial qualities rather than economic or programmatic organisation.

IT Taking the task to its furthest conception, our proposal looks for the purest forms that will cast the essence of the intended house. Since Roman Pantheon, through Renaissance Italian domes to Boullée layouts, sphere has been questing architects. Nowadays, its construction is still a challenge but its spatial quality stimulates its spread all over the World. Spherical space blurs boundaries between floors, walls and ceilings. The sphere mimics the shape of the sky above head, the cover of once inhabited caves, bubbles and drops, basic forms of nature. The unit grows around an inner spherical space, one and only, where life takes place. A second and outer sphere ties some inbetween spaces, support of daily activities. Having no site conditions, indoor spaces are shaped considering only its own aims and aspirations. Anywhere it’s set up, the unit will be lived and recognised as a whole and separate entity.

SECULAR CHAPEL

The beauty of relativity.

According to the Einstein theory of relativity and time dilation, we could slow down the time as we perceive it if we could travel through space at a speed close to the speed of light. We would be traveling 12 years and when returning to Earth we would discover that the world is about 24 years older. For us, time went normally but in the surface it seems to have accelerated. What if you try the opposite effect? If we could approach the center of the Earth and put there our chapel, time for us won’t change, but when rising to the surface we would discover that the reality we left for hours has hardly changed. We could spend hours and hours, and return to our life on the surface almost where we left off. Control of the time dimension would allow greater enjoyment of the spatial dimension. So that the proposal does not seek the perfect architectural space, but the perfect place in its full dimension. A place to meditate while your life on the surface slows down to wait for you.

Architecture has always tried to control the three dimensions. What if it could control the fourth? Time as something irrecoverable, as something impossible to stop, as the most precious thing.

Time as the main dimension to control in a place where the only worship is to yourself. If I could have a place where to stop, meditate while time stops with me Does a better investment exist?
