People walk around the building to the museum or the residential building behind it. When large spaces are to be crossed, it is usually most comfortable to move along the edge instead of walking down the middle of the space (Gehl, 2011, p.142).

People walk to High Street using steps as its the most direct route with the destination in sight. The short flights of steps, interrupted by landing is psychologically more managable and less tiring (Gehl, 2011, p.145).

People walk and stand along the edge of plaza for shopping or waiting for friends. The transition zone between the open plaza and the shops provides view to both spaces and the best opportunities for surveying (Gehl, 2011, p.149).

People walk from one shop to another to get what they need, hence staying longer. People who move about in the space experiences building details at close range with considerable intensity (Gehl, 2011, p.69).

Pedestrians use the plaza solely to get access to the shopping mall. The plaza is large and impersonal, and nothing much to experience outdoor with great distance between building (Gehl, 2011, p.31).

Only a few pedestrians sit on the benches. The primary seatings face a large and impersonal plaza, when benches do not face activities, they will not be used. (Gehl, 2011, p.27)

Pedestrian sit on the steps that serve as a good lookout point due to the lack of primary seatings. These secondary seatings have the advantage of appearing to function reasonably well even when there is only a modest number of users in the area. (Gehl, 2011, p.161)

People are observed to sit under the shading devices at the plaza in front of the shops. The plaza along the street have direct relationship to the shops, hence, more people stop, sit and observe in the outdoor space because it is inviting and easy to use. (Gehl, 2011, p.31)

Most users choose to sit on the benches provided in the central area of Serendra rather than the benches facing only the shops. The benches in the central provide good views of surrounding activities. Hence, they will be used more than the benches with less or no view of others. (Gehl, 2011, p.27)

When the occasional bazaar happen in the plaza, more users will gather to vendor shop. The human activities in the bazaar tend to attract other people, hence, more users move about with others and seek to place themselves near others. (Gehl, 2011, p.23)

Social Activity (Low Intensity)

Social Activity (High Intensity)

Social Activity (High Intensity)

Social Activity (Occasional High Intensity)

Secondary seatings provide opportunity for people sitting on the steps to have passive contact with the passerby and the surrounding activities.

Open plaza in between shopping blocks allow more social interaction of people from both side of the street. It allows chance contact when people linger in the plaza, and friend contact when they gather for shopping or recreational activity.

Benches facing the open plaza enable chances of interaction among people sitting there and passing by. Fountain that acts as a meeting point establish opportunity for friends to meet up and maintain acquaintances.

Bazaar as an occasional event allows possibility of meeting friends and gatherings to be arranged. This helps to maintain closer and more frequent contact with friends and acquintances who live near them. (Gehl, 2011, p.19)

“ The great distance between buildings create large outdoor spaces with nothing much to experience,-activities that take place are spread out in time and space, causing less opportunity for social activity. ” (Gehl, 2011, p.31)

“ The shopping mall is supplemented with usable outdoor areas, where people can walk and rest after shopping, hence providing stopping point as people come and go.” (Gehl, 2011, p.31)

“ Intimate scale of street and spillover activities from the shops form a direct relationship between the people and the surrounding environment, hence more people stop, look, and stay longer. ” (Gehl, 2011, p.28)

“ When event and people are assembled, the shopping mall and the bazaar stimulate one another, creating opportunity for more variety of experience and gathering more people. ” (Gehl, 2011, p.81)

Social Activity (Low Intensity) Only passive contact happens here where people sitting on the bench has visual contact with the drivers and cars on the main road. Social activities disappear when physical conditions are poor. (Gehl, 2011, p.33)

“ The plaza is directly connected to a main road with middle to high traffic intensity which deteriorate the quality of the outdoor environment, hence less favorable for optional and social activities. ” (Gehl, 2011, p.35)

Conclusion In conclusion, publics spaces in Bonifacio High Street work well when quality outdoor spaces are provided, hence, attracting outdoor activities such as optional and social activities. Quality of outdoor spaces are higher when the space has a smaller scale and rich in detail, or when events attracts people, thus creating more experiences. As people gather, move about and seek to place themselves near others, new activities begin in the vicinity of events that are already in progress.
