A Baltic-style spiritual journey at this year's EstDocs

It’s EstDocs and, as usual, I am scribbling away in a darkened film venue, trying to write legibly and think creatively as I watch this year’s films and take notes for what I hope will be a thought-provoking yet reasonably sensible article.

This year marked the 15th anniversary of EstDocs, the home grown and volunteer-managed documentary film festival held in Toronto every November that features Estonian and other collaboratively made films that range from amateur to professional, comedic to tragic, and everything in between.

I try to knit together some kind of overall theme or impression from each festival and though not all films of course fit into one particular mould, I have come up with this feeling that started to bubble up on the first day and that did seem to build steadily throughout – and that is, spirituality.
