Allatah Mekile ’13
ESUacademics Allatah Mekile majored in biotechnology with a minor in chemistry. An honors student, she completed three internships while at ESU. Her research at the University of Pennsylvania won her an award and a one-year membership in the American Society for Microbiology. Mekile’s internship at Johns Hopkins University, studying effects of cancer on genes, piqued her interest in oncology. With a 3.9 GPA, she is now in a program allowing students to go directly from a bachelor’s degree to study for a Ph.D. in cell and molecular biology. Justin Amann ’15 In high school, Justin Amann found himself alone after school while his mother worked, but instead of hanging around an empty house, he spent time tutoring and volunteering. He also found a mentor in his principal who helped shape the philosophy he has today: to care for and champion a cause. His principal made such an impression that Amann’s dream is to become a principal. Today, Justin is a history major at ESU and president of Student Senate. Amann is applying his philosophy about caring for a cause to the students he serves daily in his position and he cares deeply for the student body he represents. “People aren’t going to remember me,” he says, “but hopefully, they’ll remember Student Senate and ESU. Whatever you are interested in, you will find a curriculum that challenges you, and fosters critical thinking and a broad understanding of the world. Perhaps you want to study communications, Chinese or computer science. The concentration in Fine Art allows students to create their own individualized program in studio art by taking courses in a wide variety of artistic disciplines. Want to perform? The Fine and Performing Arts Center has two theaters, a gallery, concert hall, rehearsal areas, art studios, and classrooms. The state-of-the-art Science and Technology Center named for the late ESU alumnus Warren Hoeffner ’55 and his wife, Sandra, offers a theatrical style planetarium, a rooftop observatory, smart classrooms, 17 teaching laboratories, nine research laboratories, and an auditorium. If a career as a leader in business or management or as an entrepreneur is for you, ESU has distinctive majors and opportunities. The Innovation Center hosts a Business Accelerator Program, an Entrepreneurial Leadership Center, an Infectious Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, and high-tech computer training labs for workforce training. ESU fosters entrepreneurship! Prepare for the competitive workplace by creating your own business. The “Entrepreneurship Across the Colleges” initiative allows all students to discover their potential to create businesses in many fields. The Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management degree program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration (ACPHA)— one of only 51 accredited schools in the U.S. and across the world. Students graduating from Recreation Services Management are immediately eligible to sit for the examination to become a Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP). The Army ROTC program offers exceptional Leadership Development Training that will serve its students in every aspect of their career, both in the military and civilian positions. During the summer of 2013, ESU graduate student Steve Kendall, and undergraduates Josh Gaston (far left) and Mohammad Khan (left), had an experience of a lifetime—they conducted research with the help of the U.S. Naval Academy in a field near Lancaster, Pa. With the support of their professor, Haklin Kimm, Ph.D., of ESU’s computer science department, they launched a small satellite attached to a special balloon. The satellite reached higher than 100,000 feet and stayed up for three hours. The U.S. Naval Academy provided the balloons, gas and GPS tracking devices while ESU developed the payload and a satellite modem with batteries. Kendall, Gaston and Khan had to assemble the cubic satellite before they could launch it and determine under what conditions they could communicate with it by laptop computer. “There is a kind of magnetic force in the sky,” Kimm explained. The crew wanted to see what kind of effect this magnetic force would have on satellite communication. Jonathan Weber ’16
At 22, Jonathan Weber is pursuing a double major in computer science and computer security. He owns five websites and has either designed or been involved with 25. Weber took first place in the Annual Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) Business Plan Competition, winning $10,000 and a year’s office space at ESU’s Business Accelerator. The money’s fine, but what excites Weber most is connecting with business executives through his office. “The business accelerator we have,” he says, “is a great opportunity for just about every field.” For more information on Jonathan, visit esu.edu/jonathan_weber.

ESU also offers one of the premier outdoor athletics venues in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) with recent major upgrades to Eiler-Martin Stadium, including field turf and lights for night football and soccer games and a newly redesigned and resurfaced running track. The Koehler Fieldhouse and Natatorium serves as the primary physical education and intercollegiate athletics facility. Dr. Margaret Ball “Our students work well as individuals; the Chinese students work more collectively,” observed Dr. Margaret Ball, associate professor of theatre, who spent three weeks at Shanghai Normal University with four undergraduate students from ESU. Shanghai is one of ESU’s two sister schools in China—and one of five global partners. Working together in music and dance, East and West created a happy medium. The Chinese are eager for exchange with the West; and everyone benefits from a well-made bridge. Dr. Ball sums it up: “There are good things in both approaches. ESU has two television studios and the student-run radio station WESS 90.3 FM. An active Multicultural Affairs program offers events and chances to discover more about your world—and yourself!
Campus radio stations do more than entertain listeners. For Sean Eich ’13, working at ESU’s 90.3 WESS while pursuing a communication studies major gave him the opportunity to serve as a music programming intern with SiriusXM, the broadcaster with 165+ channels and 24 million subscribers. While his degree could take him almost anywhere, Eich wouldn’t mind a full-time gig running with a top dog like SiriusXM. He’s been asked back for a second internship, and that bodes well. The Great Outdoors Awaits You Stony Acres, ESU’s 119-acre wildlife sanctuary and recreation facility in Marshalls Creek, Pa., is open to ESU students, staff and faculty throughout the year. Matt Tholis ’13 Matt Tholis, an exercise science major and track & field standout, closed his ESU career with a bang in the summer of 2013 with All-America, Academic All-America and several major regional awards. Tholis was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year for his combined academic and athletic excellence. Competing in the javelin, Tholis was the national runner-up at the NCAA Division II Championships with the 12th-best mark in DII history. He was the PSAC champion and received “Field Athlete of the Year” awards at the conference and regional levels. Jessica Ras came to ESU from the Scranton/WilkesBarre area in 2008 as a softball player with big dreams for her career with the Warriors. Then she was diagnosed with leukemia in the fall of her freshman year, and everything changed. After more than two years of chemotherapy, followed by a double hip replacement due to its effects, she won her battle to return to the field. On track to graduate with a degree in health and physical education in December 2013, Jessica pitched in one game in the spring of 2012 and started the first game of Warriors’ Senior Day doubleheader in April 2013. With the help of her family, doctors and teammates, tremendous optimism and a great deal of determination, Jessica’s ESU journey was truly inspirational. Melissa Shaw M’11 Melissa Shaw M’11 and other students working at ESU’s Northeast Wildlife DNA Laboratory had often been asked by community residents to test ticks. Deer ticks can carry Lyme disease and if one is bitten it is essential to know promptly whether the tick was in fact a carrier. While conducting such research, Shaw, mentored by faculty member Dr. Jane Huffman, distinguished professor of biological sciences, developed an idea for a tick-testing kit—called Lyme-Aid— to be made available to the general public. Covering 2,400 square miles in northeastern Pennsylvania, the Pocono Mountains are known for rolling mountain terrain, breathtakingly beautiful waterfalls, thriving woodlands, winding rivers and clean air. The area has been famous as a resort area for more than 100 years. Situated on a hill facing Prospect Street in the community of East Stroudsburg, our 256-acre campus has large grassy expanses shaded by towering trees. Our location is ideal for both historic and scientific research as well as recreation, and students take advantage of the many scenic, historic, and recreational sites, including the Delaware Water Gap, Bushkill Falls, and the Pocono ski areas. The area offers outstanding restaurants, high quality entertainment and excellent shopping. In addition, the many resorts and restaurants offer an excellent opportunity for employment. ESU is located approximately 75 miles west of New York City and Newark, 85 miles northeast of Philadelphia, 40 miles southeast of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area, and 40 miles northeast of the Allentown/ Bethlehem/Easton area. ESUaffordable An Elite Education You Can Afford At ESU, we pride ourselves on making your education affordable. Seventy-five percent of our students receive some type of financial aid, and our goal is to make obtaining your education stress-free and financially reachable. Aid includes grants, loans and scholarships. Many scholarships are awarded on the basis of outstanding academic achievement. Eligibility for most student financial aid programs (other than unsubsidized loans) is based on financial need rather than academic accomplishment. Financial need is the difference between the estimated cost of attendance and the ability of the family to contribute to those educational costs. To qualify for both need- and merit-based financial aid, you must submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at fafsa.gov. ESU’s school code is 003320.

James Burke ’13 When James Burke ’13 says he owes his “great path ahead” to ESU, he isn’t just talking about a debt to his professors; he means everyone. Burke feels he’s had opportunities for growth—in computer science, his major, and in leadership and management skills—as much from staff as from faculty. Burke’s education was partly shaped by such electronic endeavors as designing a website, creating YouTube videos and writing code. He rounded all that out with active memberships on numerous committees and organizations. As Burke readies the launch of a web-based company, he’s grateful for his allinclusive education. Samantha Swank’s clothing designs are inspired by her family, particularly her father, who is a chiropractic neurologist. Her design for a tennis outfit with a back that resembles a human spine won the ESU communication studies major a contest sponsored by FILA, the sportswear company. The outfit was worn at the 2013 Sony Open in Miami by Jelena Jankovic, one of the world’s top female tennis players. Swank holds an associates degree in fashion and plans to combine her work experience at a public relations firm with her own boutique, featuring her unique designs.
