MODULUS-j

Located in the suburbs of Oawa, MODULUS-j is organized to fit into the urban fabric of the neighbouring while sll serving as an urban intensificaon project. Modulus-j serves as a mid-rise residenal building hugging the busy streets of Hemlock & St. Laurent. The plaza and community centre help in controlling pedestrian circulaon and program split. A strong sense of bound community network and relaons was a design goal achieved through the organizaon of buildings with respect to the main streets. Modulus-j targets a broad demographic of permanent residences and aims to improve the effieciency of the site. Plan repeon allows for a modular facade design. The project is a figure building from street scale but is not intrusive in the overall urban vision for the area.

Bordering Centretown and the Glebe, FABworks targets local community and passerby’s to enter this maker space and explore the world of arsc fabricaon of every type. This building is designed as a crical response to natural percepon of the brutalist nature of maker spaces doubled with a juxtaposed lighter massing element meant to evoke a new senment towards how frabricaon spaces can be. A journey through the building aims to intrigue and ence exploraon through out the different levels of the building in hopes of adversing the variety of arsc means of producon.

Cordoba Club de Remo

“Cordoba club de Remo” design aims to integratate well within the city and its exisng parameters. The main objecve of the pavilion is to address all aspects of the program need, and exisng natural elements. The Rowing Club works with the geometry of the site as to not interfere with Navarro Baldeweg’s exisng intervenon, and becomes an extension of his project through complimentary pedestrian paths that stretch to the waterfront. A heavy brutalisc concrete intenon becomes a visual relief through the thick of the trees and weightlessly extends past the island and over the Gaudalquivir River bed, becoming a pedestrian occupiable “lookout” dock. The river is a very integral part to the community’s history and thus there was an importance placed on the community’s ability to interact with and appreciate the large body of water.

P.A.D.

P.A.D. (Prefabricated Adaptable Design) was a design build project with the goal to construct a public story telling space for local arts group STO Union. Designed for George Street in Oawa’s ByWard Market for the summer’s Canada 150 celebraons (2017). The project was restricted to a small area (4’x4’ approx.) area with a limited budget of 100$ provided by STO Union. In conjuncon, the design was to be light in weight, easy to transport and easy to assemble on site by volunteers. P.A.D. was designed to seem very weightless during the day and radiate during the night. With the introducon of fabric as the main shell users would feel free to flow in and out of the project. To design is very easy to store, assemble, and extremely cost efficient whiile aesthecally minimal, which became our main design goals. *Project done in group work: Johnny Kim, Jusn Kang*

biLATERAL CONNECTIONS

biLATERAL CONNECTIONS recreaon centre is located in Yokohama, Japan. Given the high density and height of the area, biLATERAL CONNECTIONS seeks to provide a visual and emoonal relief in response the busy life that is Japan. Local architects inspired this brutalist/minimalisc building design. The Centre aims to achieve a greater pedestrian oriented experience built around the esplanade. This uses a stretched walkway to compliment the exisng espalande, creang a subtle unity between the building masses, all highlighted by the prolonged tunnel. The tunnel serves as a viewing staon for both the soccer field and the city-scape. Concrete was vital to emphasize the tradional culture of Japan and it’s use of the material in modern, minimalist, and brutalist architecture in Japan. The walls stretch great lengths and create big, blank spaces magnify the monumentality of the building.

Professional Projects

OCTC and CHEO Pre-Engineered Building Addion “OCTC had two portable buildings which already had significant years of use and wear at the me of their acquision, circa 1990. The portables were intended as a stop-gap measure to house expanded OCTC clinical operaons, in the face of organizaonal growth in both mandate and staffing. The portables were ulized to house both client treatment and assessment rooms, and staff workstaon areas for more than two and a half decades before being decommissioned. The much needed new space will be a single story, slab on grade, pre-engineered steel shell structure of approximately 8,650 sq. . of which 4,400 sq.. will be OCTC space, 2,800 sq.. will be fit-up as offices for CHEO, and 1,450 sq. , will be for circulaon. This project is currently under construcon.” - as per Arbaum.com project description
