BURGUNDY 2018 EN-PRIMEUR The 2018 vintage in Burgundy was marked by very warm weather during the growing season,
an early harvest and high yields. Work in the vineyards was crucial, as were picking dates. Decisions made in the cellars concerning the inclusion of stems and oak regimes also played their part. The result of all this hard work is an array of high quality wines, both red and white which deserve a place in any Burgundy lover’s cellar.
Please note that while the available quantities of most wines have increased this does not
mean limitless supply, particularly in the light of continuing high levels of worldwide demand. Most wines are on allocation and priority for the top wines will be given to those clients who place balanced orders.
Terms and conditions • Subject to remaining unsold • All prices are per bottle in HK Dollar • Offer valid until 30 April, 2020 • Minimum order of HK$1,500 or 6 bottles (can be mix) • Shipping to Hong Kong is free of charge and ETA by end of January 2021 • Complimentary storage until 31 December 2022 • Payment upon receipt of invoice

THE GROWING SEASON Before addressing the quality and style of the 2018 Burgundies we have to deal with the two dominant features of the vintage: a very hot growing season and an increase in the volume of wine produced. Summer temperatures rose to over 40 degrees, bringing inevitable comparisons with the 2003 vintage, but closer investigation shows that there were crucial differences between these years. While 2003 was a relatively low producing vintage, in 2018 the production of red wines in the Cote d’Or was up 16% from the average for the previous five years. Production of whites from the same region was up by a dramatic 28%.
YIELDS The big difference between 2003 and 2018 from a vignerons perspective is when the rainfall occurred. The rain in 2003 fell mostly in the winter but 2018 was marked by a wet spring which continued until June, ensuring an adequate water supply in the soil, unlike the drought conditions of 2003. Harvesting began relatively early, with most domains starting in the last week of August. Picking dates vary between producers and not everyone got it exactly right. The run up to harvest was for the most part drama-free, with the exception of outbreaks of mildew in spring, which posed a particular challenge to organic viticulturists. A hailstorm which affected parts of Nuits St Georges in July was the only other minor blight on an overall healthy picture.
THE WINES The naturally high yields had the effect of retarding the ripening of Chardonnay, so the wines do not show excessive alcohols. Acidities are generally below average but there are plenty of wines which show a classically balanced profile and should have no problem ageing gracefully in the long term. Decisions on picking dates were crucial to the success or otherwise of the red wines but other factors also played a part, such as the inclusion of stems and in what proportion, as well as the type of oak used. Despite relatively high alcohol and low acidities, there are plenty of wines which display rich, sensuous characteristics although some verge on overripeness. 6

Bernard
Billaud sold his estate to Domaine Faiveley of Nuits St Georges in 2014. BillaudSimon has long been the source of excellent, reliable, and hugely enjoyable Chablis, and continues to be so under Faiveley's ownership. Its new owners have been renovating the charming château and have installed Savigny lès Beaune-born Olivier Bailly as régisseur. He is gradually implementing small but precise changes in the winemaking style: tuning down the oak, particularly in the grands crus, and using innovative stainless steel barrels alongside traditional oak barrels. These allow him to vinify in the small volumes he likes, with the lees contact of traditional barrels but without any of the adorning oak flavouring, nor the oxidative élevage.
The
2018 is an exceptionally concentrated vintage. The wines are already very promising and showing the signs of having excellent ageing potential. Their wines are displaying an iodized character as well as good balance between freshness and smoothness and a particularly well evolved bouquet of floral aromas (lime blossom and acacia).

Domaine Billaud Simon ● Chablis 2018 $135/Bottle
● Chablis 1er Cru Les Vaillons 2018 $200/Bottle | Burg 89-91
A very fresh nose of primarily citrus, iodine and apple possess evident Chablis character. There is both fine richness and mid-palate density to the medium-bodied flavors that conclude in a clean, dry and even racy finish.
A more elegant and airier nose speaks of mineral reduction, citrus zest, spice and plenty of white pepper and floral nuances. There is actually a bit less volume to the more finely detailed middle weight flavors that deliver fine length on the precise and chiseled finale.
● Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu 2018 $235/Bottle | Burg 90-93
● Chablis 1er Cru Montee de Tonnerre 2018 $265/Bottle | Burg 90-93
There is a top note of matchstick character to the moderately exotic nose that includes whiffs of white peach and orange peel. The mouth feel of the mediumbodied flavors is also quite supple and round though there is ample punch and minerality to the welldetailed and youthfully austere finale.
● Chablis Grand Cru Vaudesir 2018 $460/Bottle | Burg 91-93 A cool, pure and retained nose is wonderfully elegant with its aromas of white fruit compote, lemon zest, spice and a whiff of sea breeze. The supple and refined flavors are on the lighter side though this is not to say dilute while delivering fine length on the racy and attractively dry finale.
Along with the Blanchots, this is the most floralsuffused wine in the range with its aromas of white peach and discreet Chablis elements that are trimmed in just enough wood to comment upon. The succulent but impressively intense middle weight flavors are somewhat less generous but even finer while exhibiting very fine length on the bone dry finale.
● Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2018* $495/Bottle | Burg 92-94 The nose is difficult to read as it's still showing secondary fermentation aromas. Otherwise there is once again excellent size, weight and richness to the equally powerful yet finer big-bodied flavors that exude plenty of minerality on the citrus, dry and linear finish.
● Chablis Grand Cru Blanchots Vieille Vigne 2018* $560/Bottle | Burg 91-94 This too is ultra-floral with its exceptionally pretty array of petrol, sea breeze and tidal pool whiffs. The delicious, voluminous and energetic medium weight flavors possess a highly beguiling texture that contrasts somewhat with the bold, robust and powerful finish.

François Lumpp and his brother Vincent began
to plant vineyards in 1977 on inherited land. These vineyards, occupying the mid-part of the slope, have since been designated Premier Crus. The brothers went their separate ways in 1991 and François founded his own domaine with his wife Isabelle. From the beginning there has been a strong focus on the quality of the plant material with new plantings relying on massal selection. The vineyards are ploughed and no herbicides have been used for over twenty years. François’ white wines are well worth trying but his reds command the most attention. The 2018 vintage in Givry brought predominately hot and dry weather but very little in the way of disease pressure. Harvesting began early on August 25th with ripe and healthy fruit and good yields. Both reds and whites show good balance, with concentration and richness. This is definitely an address to follow for those who appreciate excellent quality at very affordable prices.
13
● Givry Blanc Clos des Vignes Rondes 2018 $195/Bottle | Burg 87-89 A cool and fresh nose is clearly ripe with its aromas of white peach, citrus and a soft wisp of wood. The delicious and attractively textured middle flavors exude a subtle minerality on the bitter lemon-inflected finish that exhibits just a touch of warmth.
● Givry 1er Cru Crausot Blanc 2018 $250/Bottle | Burg 89-91 A deft application of wood sets off very fresh aromas of apple, acacia blossom and a variety of citrus nuances. There is better volume and mid-palate density to the delicious and relatively powerful medium-bodied flavors that flash touches of salinity and youthful austerity on the clean, dry and sneaky long finish.
● Givry 1er Cru La Brulee Rouge 2018 $240/Bottle | Burg 89-91 Here too there is just enough wood present to comment on setting off the spicier if otherwise similar aromas. There is better body and volume to the solidly concentrated and powerful flavors that terminate in a notably complex and persistent if decidedly firm and rustic final.
● Givry 1er Cru Petit Marole Rouge 2018 $240/Bottle | Burg 89-92 A pungent nose of smoky reduction and wood dominate the underlying fruit at present. Otherwise there is a finer if still decidedly punchy and powerful medium-bodied flavors that exhibit slightly better depth and persistence.
14
â—? Givry 1er Cru A Vigne Rouge 2018 $250/Bottle | Burg 91-93 A similar if somewhat cooler and more restrained nose that introduces succulent and concentrated yet energetic middle weight flavors that possess surprisingly good mid-palate density considering the young vines while delivering solidly powerful and lingering finish.
â—? Givry 1er Cru Clos du Cras Long Rouge 2018 $265/Bottle | Burg 90-93 Here the nose is clean with a very ripe combination of plum liqueur, cassis, spice and violet scents. The rich, palate coating and highly seductive flavors possess a velvety mouth feel thanks to the copious amount of dry extract that imparts a sappy quality to the beautifully long finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth.

CÔTE DE NUITS
17
Although Pascal Lachaux has been making the wines here since 1990, it was only in the
2008 vintage that the domaine began to label its wines Arnoux Lachaux. Previously the domaine was called Robert Arnoux after Pascal’s late father in law. The wines here typically show a clean and concentrated style with a use of oak which is evident but never overwhelming. Over the years Pascal has brought a rounder style to the wines with more sophisticated tannins than in previous years. This is a domaine which is making the most of some very well sited vineyard plots and the work in the vines is always thorough and painstaking. The top wines here are very fine indeed but there is quality evident throughout the range. The domaine is currently undergoing another generational change with Charles Lachaux now taking a major role in the winemaking, bringing a new sense of precision.
● Bourgogne Pinot Fin Rouge 2018 $295/Bottle
● Chambolle Musigny 2018 $620/Bottle | Vin 90-92
A super-fresh and bright nose features notes of airy red berry fruit that is laced with subtle earth and forest floor nuances. The mid-palate texture is more elegant than is typical for the genre and while there is a trace of backend rusticity, overall I would describe this as a relatively refined Bourgogne. Worth checking out.
The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Village has a very harmonious, slightly earthy bouquet, the 100% whole bunch lending a very discreet tertiary/sous-bois quality. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit (cranberry, strawberry and pomegranate). This has quite strict tannins and a Morey-inspired, sapid finish. Good potential.
● Nuits St-Georges Rouge 2018 $450/Bottle | Burg 88-90
● Vosne Romanee 2018 $620/Bottle | Burg 89-92
A discreet but not invisible application of wood can be found on the fresh mix of red and dark pinot fruit, earth, spice and overt floral nuances. This is not especially dense but I like the energy of the middle weight flavors that possess a highly attractive texture, all wrapped in a firm, nicely complex and only mildly rustic finale.
This too is quite elegant though with a different aromatic profile that derives more from the darker side of the fruit spectrum while incorporating a wide array of floral and spice elements. The suave, refined and sappy medium-bodied flavors possess a beguiling texture before culminating in a beautifully long and well-balanced finish. This is a relatively powerful Vosne villages with excellent underlying material. One to consider.

● Nuits St-Georges 1er Cru Les Corvees Pagets 2018 $1,095/Bottle | Vin 91-93
● Nuits St-Georges 1er Cru Les Proces 2018 $890/Bottle | Burg 90-92
The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Corvées Pagets 1er Cru comprises four barrels after being severely affected by hail. It has a rather stoic bouquet of introspective dark berry fruit mixed with black tea and damp earthy aromas. The medium-bodied palate delivers precise, filigreed tannins. That black tea element crops up again in the mouth, segueing into a subtle, brine-tinged finish that fans out gently. One of Lachaux’s most elegant wines this year.

● Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2018 $2,150/Bottle | Burg 92-94
● Echezeaux Grand Cru 2018* $2,595/Bottle | Burg 91-94
The expressive nose is unusually elegant with it airy aromas of essence of red currant, cherry and soft spice and earth elements. There is once again very good volume to the sleekly textured and intense largerscaled flavors that exhibit very fine power on the impressively long finale.
In contrast to the expressiveness of the Clos de Vougeot, this is almost mute though aggressive swirling eventually coaxes ultra-spicy aromas of various dark berries, violet and rose petal to reveal themselves. There is terrific punch and beautiful detail to the focused and sleek medium-bodied flavors that aren't quite as complex on the dusty and mildly austere finale.

● Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Chaumes 2018 $1,050/Bottle | Vin 92-94
● Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots 2018* $2,880/Bottle | Burg 92-94
The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru has a winsome bouquet of perfumed raspberry, crushed strawberry and rose petal aromas that boast exquisite delineation and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, vibrant red and black fruit and a very linear, vivid finish that conveys a sense of coiled energy. Superb.
This too is very floral in character with its beguiling blend of red and dark pinot fruit, sandalwood, Asianstyle tea and plenty of spice whiffs. There is an equally refined mouthfeel to the rich, suave and highly seductive medium-bodied flavors that tighten up quickly on the balanced and impressively persistent finale. This is very Suchots in character and an excellent example.
● Latricieres Chambertin Grand Cru 2018* $2,990/Bottle | Vin 93-95
● Romanee St. Vivant Grand Cru 2018* $5,980/Bottle | Burg 94-97
The 2018 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru was cropped at just 18hl/ha due to the way Charles Lachaux cane-pruned the vines after the hail-damaged 2017 vintage. The broody nose reveals hints of dark chocolate infusing the brambly red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit. Structured and foursquare, conservative in some ways, with a strong marine influence developing toward the fresh finish.
Like the Echézeaux, this only grudgingly reveals its exotic aromas of various floral, spice and cool red berry fruit scents. The supple and positively gorgeously textured medium-bodied flavors also possess a sense of focused power while delivering superb length on the harmonious and wonderfully classy finale. This is almost delicate while the evident restraint confers an almost cerebral quality. In sum, this is a wine of lace and grace but one that should age effortlessly for years.

In common with many Burgundy domaines, the
Bruno Clair story is a long and complicated one. Bruno is the grandson of Joseph Clair who established the Clair-Dau estate in the years following the First World War. After Joseph’s death in 1971 the estate was broken up, with many of the best vineyards being rented to negociants, notably Jadot. Bruno has painstakingly rebuilt the domaine to its present size of twenty-four hectares, representing twenty-four different appellations. The grapes are mostly de-stemmed, with some whole bunches retained depending on the vintage. The aim here is for finesse without too much extraction and a preference for old barrels over new, keeping the wood influence to a minimum. This is an estate which has continued to improve with fine adjustments over recent years.

Domaine Bruno Clair
● Gevrey Chambertin 2018 $495/Bottle | Burg 89-91 There is a top note of matchstick character to the moderately exotic nose that includes whiffs of white peach and orange peel. The mouth feel of the mediumbodied flavors is also quite supple and round though there is ample punch and minerality to the welldetailed and youthfully austere finale.
● Morey Saint Denis En la Rue de Vergy 2018 $550/Bottle | Vin 91-93 The 2018 Morey Saint-Denis En la Rue Vergy has a welldefined, slightly earthy bouquet, the whole-bunch fruit imparting distinct peppery notes, but it becomes leafier with aeration. The harmonious palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity and seamlessly integrated oak toward the finish. This should evolve into an exquisite En la Rue Vergy.
● Marsannay Les Vaudenelles 2018 $295/Bottle | Burg 89-91 Reduction knocks down the fruit though there is both good freshness and vivacity to the finer but slightly less concentrated flavors that are supple, round and generous though the finish tightens up enough to make clear that this should reward 6 to 10 years of cellaring. I would note that Vaudenelles is always better in warmer years and 2018 is no exception.
● Vosne Romanee Champs Perdrix 2018 $665/Bottle | Vin 89-91 The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Champs Perdrix is a cru that is traditionally picked late; however, due to global warming, since 2016 it has been picked earlier and earlier, according to Bruno Clair. The tightly wound bouquet features autumn leaf aromas filtered through red berry fruit, plus a touch of brown spice. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fresh line of acidity and a bright, vivacious, sorbet-fresh finish. Très bon.
● Marsannay Les Grasses Tetes 2018 $325/Bottle | Vin 90-92 The 2018 Marsannay Les Grasses Têtes has a superb bouquet, perhaps the earthier of Clair’s Marsannays and very well defined, offering detailed black fruit mixed with sous-bois and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, wonderful acidity, a lot of coiled-up energy and a mineral-soaked finish that bodes well for the future. Excellent.

24
● Savigny Les Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode 2018 $560/Bottle | Burg 90-93 A riper and spicier nose is also more deeply pitched with its blend of liqueur-like dark raspberry, poached plum and plenty of humus-inflected earth. There is even better volume to the concentrated middle weight flavors as well as equally good delineation to the stony, sappy and lingering finish that also flashes a touch of youthful austerity. Moreover, the structure is notably firmer and this should amply reward 12 to 15 years of patience yet be approachable after only 5 to 7.
● Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos du Fonteny 2018 $880/Bottle | Vin 92-94 The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos du Fonteny 1er Cru comes from the domaine’s monopole. It has a welldefined, quite leafy bouquet that is a little timid at the moment compared to its siblings. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, a mixture of red and blueberry fruit and superb salinity and tension on the elegant finish. Recommended - one of Clair's hidden gems as everyone goes for the Clos SaintJacques!
● Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 2018* $1,550/Bottle | Vin 94-96 The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru, as Bruno Clair advised, was the most closed on the nose of all his Gevrey wines, despite coaxing. The harmonious, silky-smooth palate is very well balanced with filigreed tannins and blood orange seeping into the pixelated finish. The quality is here - it just needs bottle age. Superb.
● Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 2018* $2,350/Bottle | Vin 95-97 The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has an expressive bouquet of red berry and cassis fruit infused with iris and violet petals, gently unfolding with each swirl of the glass; oyster shell emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and fine body and depth. The very mineral-driven, almost citric finish lingers in the mouth. Excellent.
● Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru 2018* $2,350/Bottle | Vin 94-96 An even spicier nose reflects notes of red currant, plenty of floral influence and suggestions of earth and forest floor. There is good power and punch to the gorgeously textured broad-shouldered flavors that also terminate in a bitter fruit pit-infused finish that goes on and on. This is spectacular but note well that it is imposingly structured.

It is now more than ten years since the former
Rene Engel property was purchased by the Artemis group, owners of Chateau Latour. Winemaker Michel Mallard has a very sure touch on the controls and the results from this domaine continue to impress. Yields are considerably lower than under the previous ownership. The village Vosne Romanee remains a benchmark here: two thirds of the fruit is sourced from the Premier Cru Aux Brulees vineyard.
Harvesting
at EugĂŠnie took place in the first week of September. All the reds have a whole bunch component, from 10% in the village Vosne Romanee up to 75% in the Grand Crus. Michel Mallard observed that in 2018, ‘Despite the hot and dry summer the wines are quite fresh with very good energy and much better terroir transparency than I imagined they might have.’

28
Domaine d'Eugénie ● Vosne Romanee Village 2018 $495/Bottle | Burg 89-91 Moderate wood influence surrounds the overtly spiced and ripe plum, dark currant and violet scents. The attractively textured, rich and sappy medium weight flavors possess very good depth on the lengthy finish where a touch of wood appears. This is quite good for its level and is a wine that should drink well on the younger side if that's your preference.
● Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2018 $2,390/Bottle | Vin 94-96 The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a gorgeous bouquet of dark cherry fruit, black currant, crushed stone and light iodine aromas, very pure and seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and good acidity, the whole cluster (70%) lending a touch of pepperiness toward a finish that is precise and persistent. Superb.
● Vosne Romanee Clos d'Eugénie 2018* $950/Bottle | Vin 91-92
● Echezeaux Grand Cru 2018* $2,490/Bottle | Vin 92-94
The 2018 Vosne-Romanée le Clos d'Eugénie is matured in around 30% new oak this year and includes 50% whole clusters. It has a very attractive bouquet of welldefined cranberry and wild strawberry fruit, and fine mineralité and tension are on display. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, darker fruit vis-à-vis the Vosne Village and a saline, black-peppertinged finish. Recommended.
The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru includes 60% whole cluster. It has a very detailed, mineral-driven bouquet of black cherry, briar, wet limestone and subtle wilted rose petal aromas - perhaps the most elegant that the domaine has produced... and in this kind of growing season! The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and a little chalky at the moment, and the 75% new oak is nicely integrated. The crisp, slightly compact finish will need some time.
● Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Aux Brulees 2018* $1,490/Bottle | Vin 93-95 The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru contains 60% whole cluster. It has a crisp, focused bouquet of vivacious raspberry, morello cherry, crushed chalk and light marine aromas, very ethereal in style compared to the same wine a decade ago. The palate is mediumbodied with gentle grip and flavors blackberry mixed with raspberry, dovetailing into a very tertiary, peppery finish defined (at the moment) by the whole-bunch contribution.
● Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru 2018* $2,980/Bottle | Vin 95-97 The 2018 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru contains 70% whole cluster matured in two-thirds new oak. It has a very refined bouquet of ample, very pure red currant, wild strawberry and sous-bois aromas that unfurl with each swirl of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, a fine bead of acidity, good depth and concentration and the structure one seeks on the finish. Superb.

The
Faiveley family have a long history in Nuits St Georges dating back over 200 years, during which time they have been one of the most influential names in the Côte d'Or. Today, initiated by their father François, the dynamic brother and sister duo, Erwan and Eve, have been involved in a hugely exciting cultural revolution at Faiveley. No longer just a négociant house, the Faiveley family now own an extraordinary range of vineyards in Burgundy including an eye-watering 12 hectares of grand cru and 27 hectares of premier cru. The secret of their success is to treat each individual parcel with same passion and detail as some of their smaller scale neighbours. Their quality is hitting even greater heights in the hands of winemaker Jérôme Flous working in their new cathedral like winemaking facilities in the heart of Nuits St Georges.

The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is another of the portfolio's high-points this year, bursting with aromas of wild berries, orange rind, incense and smoked meats. On the palate, it's full-bodied, fleshy and textural, with oldvine concentration, broad shoulders and a long finish.
● Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2018 $1,190/Bottle | WA 93-95 The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is performing very well, wafting from the glass with a deep-pitched bouquet of cassis, wild berries, incense, rich soil tones and woodsmoke. On the palate, the wine is fullbodied, layered and broad-shouldered, with a deep and layered core, rich structuring tannins and ripe but succulent acids.
● Corton Grand Cru Clos des Cortons 2018 $1,190/Bottle | WA 93-95+
Once again there is just enough wood to point out along with hints of menthol, anise and the sauvage adding breadth to the ripe dark currant scents. As is usually the case, the larger-scaled flavors possess more size and weight if not the same refinement or minerality as the Latricières where the supporting tannins coat the palate on the grippy, serious and youthfully austere finale.
● Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru 2018* $2,065/Bottle | WA 94-96 The 2018 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru soars from the glass with a rich bouquet of cassis, dark berries, baking chocolate, woodsmoke, loamy soil, licorice and grilled game. On the palate, it's full-bodied, rich and concentrated, with terrific energy and structural refinement despite the wine's texture and volume and a long, saline finish.
Aromas of wild berries, dark chocolate, grilled squab, warm spices and forest floor introduce the 2018 Corton Grand Cru Clos des Cortons Faiveley, a medium to full-bodied, youthfully reserved wine that's deep, lively and concentrated, concluding with a long and beautifully defined finish.
● Echezeaux En Orveaux Grand Cru 2018* $1,190/Bottle Clear ruby hue and an enticing nose offering fruity and toasty notes. The palate is smooth and fruity with silky tannins and a long, lingering finish. This grand cru offer a firm, well-balanced structure and excellent ageing potential.

● Pourpre 2018 $95/Bottle The 2018 Poupre is the newly introduced Vin de France from Pascale Mugneret. It undergoes some whole cluster addition and is aged in generally newer oak than the Passet out grain it replaces. The simple blueberry and raspberry bouquet feels a little smudged at the moment. The easy going palate is medium-bodied with light tannins and a touch of pepper on the short finish.
● Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2018 $150/Bottle
This
small domaine (around five hectares) is little known on account of its limited size but it is fortunate to have holdings in some of the finest sites in the Cote de Nuits. Since 2005 the domaine has been in the hands of Gerard’s son, Pascal, who has converted the vineyards to organic viticulture.
The
hot vintage brought in fairly high yields at Gerard Mugneret, around 38 hl/ha as opposed to the usual 33 hl/ha. Alcohols averaged at a manageable 13.2% despite the heat. A high percentage of whole clusters were used, from 40% up to 100%.
The 2018 Côte de Nuits Village Clos du Chapeau has an open-knit, generous bouquetof red cherries and crushed strawberry fruit, hints of crushed rose petal emerging with time. The medium-bodied palate offers fine tannin. Taut and crisp with a vivacious, tart red cherry finish and a lightly spicy after taste. Delicious.
● Gevrey Chambertin Aux Murots 2018 $450/Bottle | Vin 89-91 The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Murots has quite a precocious, lively bouquet, almost feisty, with kirsch and crushed strawberry scents that burst from the glass. The medium-bodied palate delivers grainy tannins, and the 60% whole bunch lends fine earthiness. White pepper and graphite notes emerge toward the linear, correct finish.
● Vosne Romanee Cuvee Quatrain 2018 $480/Bottle | Burg 88-91 This too is very fresh and restrained with its softly spicy but overtly floral array of poached plum and exotic tea nuances. There is fine density and power to the vibrant and even robust mediumbodied flavors that offer very good depth and persistence though with limited refinement.
● Vosne Romanee Aux Vigneux 2018 $495/Bottle | Burg 88-91 A similar fruit profile is present but with a broader array of spice elements. The sleeker and slightly more refined medium weight flavors also possess good energy and delineation while delivering even better depth and persistent. This is a quality and age worthy Vosne villages worthy of your interest.

● Vosne Romanee Cuvee Precolombiere 2018 $590/Bottle | Vin 90-92
● Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes 2018 $1,150/Bottle | Burg 91-94
The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Selection PreColombière contains 60% whole-bunch fruit, though it is difficult to discern on the nose, which is very well defined with touches of sousbois/autumn leaves infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. A finely chiseled Vosne-Romanée with impressive mineralité and tension toward the lightly spiced finish. Excellent.
This is aromatically restrained to the point of being almost mute though aggressive swirling eventually coaxes the ripe aromas of cassis, violet and soft spice nuances to reveal themselves. The delicious, sleek and vibrant middle weight flavors are even more refined with a beguiling succulence to the rich, well-detailed and sneaky long finish that is shaped by quite fine-grained tannins. This too is absolutely lovely.
● Savigny Les Beaune 1er Cru Aux Gravains 2018 $380/Bottle | Burg 88-91
● Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Aux Brulees 2018 $1,550/Bottle | Vin 93-95
A slightly more elegant nose is noticeably more floral-inflected on the array of red and dark pinot fruit, spice and humus-tinged earth. The more refined if slightly less concentrated middle weight flavors are juicy and succulent before culminating in a dusty, delicious and lingering finale.
The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru is fascinating to compare with Mugneret’s Suchots, being perhaps even more pixelated, with darker fruit and heightened mineralité, and crushed stone sprinkled in the glass. The medium-bodied palate delivers fine-grained tannins. More saline than Les Suchots, with superb tension and poise on the long finish. Superb.
● Vosne Romane 1er Cru Les Suchots 2018 $1,090/Bottle | Vin 92-94
● Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru La Richemone 2018 $1,750/Bottle | Burg 92-94
The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a very well-defined bouquet and, like others, I find this a surprisingly understated and elegant Suchots. The palate is medium-bodied with finegrained tannins, the 60% whole-cluster fruit neatly subsumed toward a silky, graceful finish that shows real class. Pascale Mugneret has crafted a wonderful Suchots here.
● Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Aux Cras 2018 $1,090/Bottle | Burg 91-93 A perfumed and very pretty nose combines notes of ripe, fresh and cool red berries with a lovely array of floral elements that include rose petal, violet, lilac and lavender. The rich, intense and saline-inflected flavors possess an appealing vibrancy on the complex, balanced and persistent finale..
*Denotes limited availability
A perfumed and ultra-floral suffused nose possesses good spice along with hints of plum, mocha and cassis. There is excellent volume to the large-scaled flavors that brim with palate coating sap as well as a refreshing salinity on the impressively complex and lengthy finish. This is excellent.
● Echezeaux Grand Cru 2018 $1,550/Bottle | Vin 92-94 The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru contains 90% whole cluster, and that shows through on the nose, which actually reminds me of a Dujac. It is well defined with cracked black pepper and touches of brine - the one cru from Mugneret sporting a distinctive marine influence. The palate is medium-bodied with quite thick tannins on the entry. An ambitious, dense Echézeaux with grip and girth toward the finish. It deserves five or six years just to soften its edges.

This Vosne Romanee based estate is now in the capable hands of Patrice Cacheux since
his father Jacques retired in 1994. It was Jacques, partly inspired by his great friend Henri Jayer, who made the transition from grape grower to domaine bottler. The vineyard holdings now consist of seven hectares spread over eleven appellations, including some of the finest sites in Vosne Romanee. In the vineyards Patrice has moved towards biodynamic practices, while in the cellar the grapes are completely destemmed before a seven day cold maceration before fermentation begins. The domaine is one of only three owners of the tiny Premier Cru La Croix Rameau which consists of just 0.6 of a hectare hard by the north-east corner of Romanee Saint Vivant.
● Vosne Romanee Les Genaivrieres 2018 $395/Bottle Splendidly situated vineyard immediately below premier cru Clos des Réas. Rich and aromatic, a lovely expression of pinot noir.Combines a lovely, succulent texture with excellent backbone.
● Vosne Romanee Aux Reas 2018 $395/Bottle Adjacent to, and at the same level on the slope, as premiers crus Chaumes and Clos des Réas. Wonderful freshness and powerwith tremendous length on the finish. Premier cru quality.
● Vosne Romanee Les Chalandins 2018 $395/Bottle Lies just to the north of Les Ormes in the direction of Clos Vougeot. Beautiful freshness allied to dense, ripe, concentrated fruit. A lovely, harmonious wine, complete and elegant.
36
● Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Plantes 2018 $780/Bottle The delicious, vibrant and solidly well-detailed medium weight flavors exude a subtle minerality on the rich, sappy and moderately firm finish where the wood telegraphed by the nose resurfaces. To be sure the wood remains in the background and overall, this is really quite good.
● Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Brulees 2018 $930/Bottle Shows black fruits with raspberry overtones. Very generous fruit on the palate with great length. The tannins are evident but very smooth and persuasive.
● Echezeaux Grand Cru $1,080/Bottle Aged in 50% new oak. Splendid depth and concentration with spicy notes and a spectacularly long finish.
● Vosne Romanee 1er Cru La Croix Rameau 2018 $1,190/Bottle Patrice Cacheux owns the central portion of this tiny (0.6 ha) enclave within grand cru Romanée Saint Vivant. Rich and sumptuous with masses of red cherry and blackberry fruit.

Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier is based at the Château de ChambolleMusigny which has been in the Mugnier family since 1863. In 1985 Frédéric Mugnier, the fifth generation of the family on the property, took over. As of 2004, he reclaimed the Nuits-St Georges Clos de la Maréchale vineyard, which had been on lease to Faiveley since 1950, and is the only wine offered at this stage of the year.
● Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Marechale Rouge 2018 $625/Bottle | Burg 89-92 Moderate reduction dominates the underlying fruit today though there is good freshness to the somber and exceptionally rich and clearly concentrated flavors that possess a velvety mouthfeel before concluding in a dusty, palate coating finish that flashes hints of warmth and mocha.

The origins of this domaine date to 1926 when Jean Confuron of Vosne married Anne-Marie Bouchard of Premeaux. They received vineyards from both families and established their business in Premeaux, in the south of Nuits Saint Georges. Their son Jean-Jacques married Andrée Noëllat from Vosne who brought to the marriage premier cru vines in Nuits and important parcels of grand cru vines in the Clos de Vougeot and Romanée Saint-Vivant. After the death of JeanJacques the domaine was run by his daughter Sophie who married Alain Meunier and manages the business with him. Together they made the important decision to start domaine bottling and to farm their eight hectares of vineyard organically. Standards are high across the range here, with the village Chambolle Musigny, made from old vine material, being especially noteworthy for bargain seekers.
● Cote de Nuits Village La Montagne Blanc 2018 $255/Bottle Concentrated, dry and full, this is a lovely expression of white from the northern part of the Cote d'Or. Serious, age worthy white Burgundy with a distinct smoky edge to it.
● Cote de Nuits Village La Montagne Rouge 2018 $255/Bottle More interesting are the velvet-textured light weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the mildly rustic finish that offers similar depth and persistence.
● Cote de Nuits-Villages Les Vignottes 2018 $290/Bottle The underlying herbal tea-inflected fresh. The palate impression of weight flavors is sleek and bright ample minerality that emerges on rustic finish.
fruit seems the lighter along with the slightly
● Nuits St. Georges Les Fleurieres 2018 $360/Bottle A relatively deeply pitched nose offers up notes of plum, violet, earth and whiffs of oak and the sauvage. The underlying sense of energy to the nicely detailed and lightly stony flavors that conclude in a mildly rustic and moderately austere finish that is a bit angular and spiky.
40
● Chambolle Musigny 2018 $425/Bottle
● Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2018* $1,190/Bottle
The mouthfeel of the medium-bodied and sleek flavors is notably finer, all wrapped in a firm and dusty finish that possesses more evident minerality as well as slightly firmer acid support. A quality villages.
A discreet application of wood easily allows the cool and pure essence of red currant, herbal tea, earth and humus-suffused aromas to be appreciated. The medium weight flavors possess a lovely sense of verve and excellent delineation while delivering impressive length on the complex, youthfully austere and serious finish.
● Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Chaboeufs 2018 $695/Bottle
● Romanee St. Vivant Grand Cru 2018* $3,950/Bottle
Mild reduction masks the fruit but not the suggestion of warm earth which also appears on the supple, round and agreeably rich mediumbodied flavors that offer good verve if only average density on the balanced and lingering finish. This wine's strong point is its complexity.
A beautifully spicy nose exhibits aromas of plum, dark cherry, sandalwood and a hint of Asian-style tea along with background notes of menthol and wood. The beautifully textured middle weight flavors possess a super-sleek, indeed even lacy, texture as well as a refreshing salinity, all wrapped in a well-detailed, refined and focused finale.
● Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2018 $860/Bottle Subtle. A mild touch of reduction push the discreet spice elements to the background. Otherwise the super-refined and sleek flavors possess a satiny mouthfeel before culminating in a slightly lean mineral-inflected finale.

This beautiful domaine is nestled
in its own little enclave. The cellars sit alongside the road running through Prémeaux-Prissey on its way to Nuits St Georges. Their monopole vineyards of Clos de l'Arlot and Clos des Forêts St Georges are some of the most southerly premiers crus of the Côte de Nuits. In 1987 insurers AXA Millésime invested with then owner Jean-Pierre de Smet and in 2014, AXA's inimitable Christian Seely appointed Géraldine Godot as winemaker and technical director. Their wines combine classical Nuits St Georges structure and substance with the elegance and finesse achieved by whole bunch vinification and masterful integration of new oak. Géraldine says she pursues above all else "complexity, structure, and body", and aims to make wines that can be enjoyed from their youth. 42
● Cote de Nuits Clos du Chapeau 2018 $215/Bottle | Vin 89 The 2018 Côte de Nuits Village Clos du Chapeau has an open-knit, generous bouquet of red cherries and crushed strawberry fruit, hints of crushed rose petal emerging with time. The medium-bodied palate offers fine tannin. Taut and crisp with a vivacious, tart red cherry finish and a lightly spicy aftertaste. Delicious.
● Nuits St. Georges La Gerbotte Blanc 2018 $310/Bottle | Vin 87-89 It has a well-defined bouquet with scents of apple blossom, sliced pear and crushed stone, quite Puligny-like in style. The palate is well balanced, the 20% new oak lending mid palate weight. Light walnut and fumé notes define the finish, which displays moderate length. Fine.
● Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Mont des Oiseaux 2018 $425/Bottle | Burg 88-90 A cooler and slightly more elegant array is comprised by the essence of violet, plum and various dark berry fruit elements. There is fine energy if only moderate density to the mediumbodied flavors that culminate in a bitter cherry and slightly edgy finish.
● Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos des Forets St. Georges 2018 $585/Bottle | Vin 92-94 The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Fôrets Saint Georges 1er Cru, one of the two monopoles of the domaine, is completely de-stemmed and sees around 45% new oak. Funnily enough, it has a very Vosne-like bouquet with floral aspects permeating the blueberry and wild strawberry fruit. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannins and fine depth. Very smooth in texture, with impressive harmony. It just needs a little more tension and personality toward the blackberry-driven finish; the Clos de l’Arlot is imbued with a little more charm at present.

● Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de L'Arlot Blanc 2018 $610/Bottle | Vin 90-92 The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de l’Arlot Blanc 1er Cru is matured in 20% new oak. It has a well-defined and fragrant bouquet, subtle scents of marzipan and orange pith unfurling with aeration. The well-balanced palate offers orange peel and a touch of bitter lemon on the entry. This delivers more weight and a little more density than the La Gerbotte, finishing with pleasing salinity and a hint of toffee apple.
● Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de L'Arlot Rouge 2018 $610/Bottle | Vin 91-93 The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de l’Arlot 1er Cru was very backward when I tasted it at the domaine and demanded some time in the glass. Introspective black fruit and touches of menthol and spices emerge with aeration. The mediumbodied palate offers quite firm tannins that lend impressive backbone. This is a more masculine Clos de l’Arlot than I have encountered in the past, quite grippy but maintaining balance, with a slightly chalky-textured finish.
● Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Suchots 2018* $925/Bottle | Vin 93-95 The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru contains 35% whole-bunch fruit this year, matured in 40% new oak. It has a gorgeous bouquet that is typical Les Suchots, featuring opulent dark cherries, raspberry coulis and impressive mineral notes. The wood is very well assimilated here. The medium-bodied palate offers fine tannins, crisp black and red fruit and touches of dark chocolate toward the structured, almost Malconsorts-like finish. This is a fascinating and well-crafted Vosne-Romanée that will age with style.

FrĂŠderic Magnien is the fifth generation to run this biodynamic family estate
in Morey Saint Denis. Prior to joining his father Michel to work full time at the domaine, Frederic had experience making Pinot Noir in both California and Australia. This is one of the finest estates in the region with wines of extraordinary aroma, fruit and elegance partnering the trademark Magnien richness and depth, with subtle use of new oak. The fruit here used to be 100% de-stemmed but in recent years Frederic has included some whole clusters with some wines seeing up to 100% whole bunches in 2014. The level of new wood has also been considerably reduced. This is a domaine which continues to evolve, the wines showing more subtlety and elegance than in previous years. 44
● Morey Saint Denis 2018 $230/Bottle This is also quite aromatically pretty with its ripe array of plum, red and dark currant and wafting spice elements. There is both good energy and detail to the delicious medium weight flavors that conclude in a dusty, firm and robust finish where a slight touch of dryness slowly emerges that's enough to cut the length a bit short.
● Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers 2018 $565/Bottle | Burg 90-92 Here there is a ripe array of much more sauvagetinged aromas of plum, black cherry, cassis and a floral wisp. The supple but energetic middle weight plus flavors exude a plenitude of minerality on the lingering, firm and serious finish. Like the Goulots, this isn't especially dense but it is better balanced.
● Gevrey Chambertin Les Seuvrees Vieilles Vignes 2018 $295/Bottle | Burg 88-90
● Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Les Goulots 2018 $565/Bottle | Burg 88-91
A reticent nose grudgingly offers up notes of essence of plum, violet, earth and pretty spice wisps. There is fine verve and detail to the relatively refined medium-bodied flavors where the texture contrasts with the rustic and robust finish that exhibits a touch of warmth.
There is enough reduction present to mask the underlying fruit that does seem quite ripe. There is both good delineated and verve to the focused and mineral-driven flavors that exude a refreshing salinity on the mildly tangy finish. This isn't especially dense and while the balance isn't quite perfected today, I suspect as the tannins resolve it will become more agreeable.
● Gevrey Chambertin Aux Echezeaux 2018 $295/Bottle Located south of Dijon, the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation is the top village of the Côte de Nuits. Here the expressive and beautifully layered nose combines both upper and lower register aromas of essence of red cherry and pomegranate with those of earth, plum and humus. There is terrific punch and intensity to the muscular and stony medium weight flavors that deliver outstanding depth and length for its level.
● Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers 2018 $565/Bottle | Burg 90-93 A more elegant nose is quite ripe yet still manages to remain fresh as there is a wafting quality to the spicy combination of dark cherry, plum and cassis. There is excellent volume and intensity to the more concentrated and tautly muscular flavors where a touch of salinity adds freshness to the lingering finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is really quite good and worth checking out.
*Denotes limited availability
● Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru 2018 $1,090/Bottle | Burg 91-93 A broad-ranging nose displays notes of both red and dark berries along with floral, spice, underbrush and earth nuances. There is once again a beguiling texture to the larger-scaled flavors that possess excellent punch and power before concluding in a focused and very firm if slightly tangy finish that will likely progressively dissipate with a few years of bottle age.
● Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2018 $1,150/Bottle | Burg 90-92 Firm reduction overshadows the fruit today. Otherwise there is fine detail and punch to the impressively intense flavors that are a bit light compared to a classic Clos de la Roche though I like the minerality, depth and overall balance.
● Clos Saint Denis Grand Cru 2018 $1,290/Bottle | Burg 89-92 This is riper still with mocha and slightly jammy notes of mostly dark berry liqueur and baked fruit. The sleek, intense and rich medium weight flavors possess a refined mouthfeel that contrasts somewhat with the dusty, youthfully austere, structured and slightly drying finish.

● Bourgogne Blanc 2018 $185/Bottle
● Meursault En La Barre 2018 $410/Bottle | Vin 90-92
The 2018 Bourgogne Blanc has a pretty orange blossom and lime bouquet that seems well defined. The palate is nicely balanced with good acidity.
The 2018 Meursault En La Barre comes from a 1.3-hectare parcel. It has a complex bouquet of orange peel, Granny Smith apples, wet limestone and just a hint of Thai fish oil in the background, indicating the concentration of the growing season. The palate is well balanced with a fine thread of acidity, a hint of sour lemon lending tension, and good weight and intensity on the finish.
● Meursault 2018 $360/Bottle | Vin 90-92 The 2018 Meursault Village comes from three parcels: Sous La Velle, Les Corbins and Les Chaumes. It has an elegant bouquet of fresh white peaches, citrus lemon and light wet limestone aromas, reminiscent of a Jean-Marc Roulot. There is a light tangy orange peel note on the entry of this well-balanced, quite deep wine. The persistent ginger-tinged finish fans out gently in a satisfying manner. Excellent.
*Denotes limited availability
● Meursault Les Tillets 2018 $410/Bottle | Vin 91-93 The 2018 Meursault Les Tillets comes from 0.66 hectares of vine. It is tighter and more backward on the nose compared to the En La Barre, and slightly earthier in style, with flinty, chalky notes reluctantly unfolding. The well-balanced palate delivers good concentration on the entry and notes of orange zest, white peaches and a healthy dash of lemongrass.

François
Jobard began working with his father in 1957 and established a reputation for intensely structured, mineral toned wines with great ageing potential. His son Antoine came on board in 2002 and since 2007, when Francois officially retired, the wines have carried his name alone. Winemaking and maturation continue in very much the same way as previously, with an extended period of maturation on the lees and an avoidance of new oak. The domaine owns around five hectares of vines including significant holdings in some of the best Meursault Premier Crus. Other standouts include the village Tillets and En La Barre and a Bourgogne Blanc which is one of the very best in that category.
● St. Aubin Sentier de Clou 2018 $410/Bottle | Vin 89-91
● Meursault 1er Cru Charmes 2018* $850/Bottle | Vin 92-94
It offers apple blossom, gunflint and light nectarine aromas on a nose that requires a little encouragement from the glass. The palate is well defined, with good tension on the entry, and quite weighty in the mouth, displaying notes of ginger, shaved almond, orange peel and a hint of menthol on the persistent finish. Very fine. Drink over the next decade.
Offering walnut and light nutmeg notes, a hint of lanolin in the background and later a discreet petrolly note. The palate possesses the taut line of acidity necessary to counterbalance the intensity and richness of this Charmes. It feels long and generous toward the finish, where hints of stem ginger and grilled almonds linger on the aftertaste.
● Meursault 1er Cru Poruzot 2018 $620/Bottle | Vin 92-94 It comes courtesy of 0.79 hectares of vine planted between 1972 and 1994. It is well defined on the nose, offering scents of hazelnut and grilled walnut, hints of orange blossom and a very faint menthol notes. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, a judicious tang of ginger that lends tension, and impressive depth toward the finish, which lingers in the mouth. Superb.
● Meursault 1er Cru Genevrieres 2018* $890/Bottle | Vin 89-91 The 2018 Meursault Genevrières 1er Cru comes from a single 0.50-hectare parcel of vines. This has a very feisty bouquet, quite feral compared to its peers, showing just a touch of warmth compared to the more refined Poruzots.

It takes a certain amount of skill and experience to navigate through the various branches of the Morey family to be found in Chassagne; according to Jasper Morris ‘The Morey family might be considered the senior clan in Chassagne-Montrachet’. Caroline Morey was already working with her husband Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey when she took over her father Jean-Marc Morey’s vineyard holdings in 2014. Other parcels of vines have been acquired and the domaine now owns around seven hectares. Caroline’s skill lies with Pinot Noir and she recognizes that several of her vineyards are more suited to the production of red wine. The whites are largely the responsibility of her husband, Pierre-Yves. This is a very impressive boutique operation that goes from strength to strength with each vintage and quality is high from the village wines through to the more exalted appellations. ● Chassagne Montrachet Village Rouge 2018 $260/Bottle
● Chassagne Montrachet Village Chambrees Blanc 2018 $435/Bottle
A pungent nose is comprised by notes of moderate reduction and wood. There is a bit more volume and richness, all wrapped in a moderately firm and rustic finish where a trace of dryness emerges.
There is good richness to the round and caressing flavors that possess a juicy palate impression before concluding in a solidly complex and persistent finish that is just a bit more tightly wound.
● Santenay Les Cornieres Village 2018 $260/Bottle
● Beaune 1er Cru Greves Rouge 2018 $455/Bottle
A subtle application of wood frames notes of citrus, matchstick and pear. The racy and intense middle weight flavors possess excellent punch and a lovely minerality while delivering fine length on the clean and dry if not especially complex finish. This should be approachable young but also repay 4 to 7 years of cellaring.
An exuberantly fresh and relatively high-toned nose features a ripe array of cherry, raspberry and spice. There is fine richness to the round and attractively textured flavors though a hint of dryness that's enough to compromise the overall sense of balance.
● Beaune 1er Cru Greves Blanc 2018 $295/Bottle A more elegant nose features notes of various white orchard fruit, lemon peel and a floral suggestion. The rich and round but decidedly vibrant medium weight flavors that possess markedly better complexity on the bracing citrusinflected finish.
*Denotes limited availability
● Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumees 2018* $695/Bottle There is both good density and freshness to the solidly powerful medium-bodied flavors that terminate in a juicy and bone dry finish. I like the balance and this should age very well.

Owning one of Meursault's most celebrated estates, Dominique Lafon could have been
happy with his lot. But Papinhe in 1999 he bought a few hectares of vineyards in MillyLamartine in the Mâconnais, an hour or so to the south, seeking a new challenge. Many of his peers thought he was mad, but Dominique quickly proved them wrong (so much so that many other Côte de Beaune producers have since followed). He's added further land since those early years, and appointed talented winemaker Caroline Gon to manage the estate in 2006. She's led its conversion to organic viticulture, and they're some of the best wines coming out of the Mâconnais, and some of the best value wines coming out of Burgundy.
● Mâcon Milly Lamartine 2018 $135/Bottle $280/Magnum | Burg 87-89 The nose was dominated by sulfur. Otherwise the intense and highly energetic flavors possess excellent delineation, indeed they're chiseled, before culminating in a bone dry grapefruitinflected finish
● Mâcon Milly Lamartine Clos du Four 2018 $175/Bottle | Burg 89-91 Like the Milly-Lamartine, sulfur dominates the nose today. Otherwise the punchy and caressing medium-bodied flavors possess an attractive mouth feel that carries over to the lemon, clean and bone dry finish that is on the austere side today.
● Mâcon Uchizy les Maranches 2018 $155/Bottle | Vin 90
● Viré Clessé 2018, blanc $185/Bottle | Burg 89-92
The 2018 Mâcon-Uchizy has an understated bouquet that gains intensity with aeration, scents of honeysuckle and mirabelle emerging with time. The taut, linear palate is well balanced with fine definition and crisp acidity. A delicate touch of spice appears on the saline finish. Excellent.
A relatively high-toned nose combines notes of pear and apple compote with those of floral and citrus scents. Once again there is very good volume to the caressing but almost painfully intense flavors that coat the palate on the textured and sneaky long finish. Good stuff.

Henri Boillot is a Burgundian rarity who excels
with both red and white wines. There are many reasons for this success but owning prime parcels of vineyards and taking painstaking care of his vines are two of the first that come to mind. Responsibility for the red wines has now passed to his son Guillaume and the style and quality continue to impress. The red grapes undergo a cold maceration for twelve days on arrival in the winery and on completion of fermentation are matured in either new or one year old casks. The deep colour of the Boillot reds can be misleading as these are not heavily extracted wines. They are very fine expressions of the character of the individual vineyards from which they are sourced.

● Meursault 2018 $390/Bottle | WA 91
● Meursault 1er Cru Genevrieres 2018* $850/Bottle | WA 93
Bright yellow with touches of green. Delicate citrus and white blossom nose. Slightly buttery. Pure, full-bodied and precise on the palate. Good energy. A mineral finish. Slightly salty.
The 2018 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières reveals aromas of crisp green orchard fruit, peach, spring blossom, honeycomb and praline, followed by a medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated palate that's chalky and structured, built around lively acids and appreciable dry extract.
● Puligny Montrachet 2018 $420/Bottle | WA 91 Bright yellow with hints of green. Nose of crisp white blossom. Pure and delicate. On the palate, it's great energy. Powerful and long for a village appellation. Very fresh with intense minerality.
● Volnay 1er Cru Les Chevrets 2018 $595/Bottle | WA 92 The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Chevrets is showing beautifully, unfurling in the glass with aromas of cherries, rose petals, cassis and violets. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with an ample chassis of powdery tannins, fine concentration and succulent acids. From a parcel of 58-year-old vines, this is a quintessentially elegant Volnay that should also drink well young.
● Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiets 2018 $595/Bottle | WA 93 The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Frémiets exhibits lovely aromas of raspberries and cherries mingled with orange rind, spice and raw cocoa. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and fine-boned, from more calcium-rich soils than Les Chevrets and built around bright acids and fine, chalky tannins.
● Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles 2018 $850/Bottle | WA 94 Boillot's 2018 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles reveals aromas of orange oil, white flowers and peaches, complemented by classy top notes of nutmeg and warm bread. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and vibrant, with quite a tensile, tight-knit core for this typically enveloping premier cru. But looking back through my notes, that often seems to be the case chez Boillot.
● Puligny Montrachet 1er Clos de la Mouchère 2018 $890/Bottle | WA 95 Boillot's emblematic 2018 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère has turned out brilliantly, wafting from the glass with aromas of pear, hazelnut, dried white flowers, citrus oil, blanched almonds and smoke. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with terrific concentration, searing levels of extract and a long, mineral finish.
● Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2018* $1,100/Bottle | WA 94 The 2018 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is showing very well, soaring from the glass with aromas of wild berries, rose petals, violets, orange rind and dark chocolate. On the palate, it's full-bodied, concentrated and muscular, with lively acids and a powdery but elegantly refined chassis of structuring tannins, concluding with a long and resonant finish.

Domaine Hubert Lamy in Saint Aubin was established in 1973, the year
Olivier was born. Olivier took over from his father in 1996 and has continued to increase the size of the Domaine. Most of the production is white. These wines are known for their incredible purity and precision and they are frequently superior to bottles which sell at twice the price from more fashionable villages.
"2018 was a very special vintage for many reasons. First it was an early harvest which started on the 22nd of August (earlier than 2003). Then the length of the harvest, which lasted for 20 days, and was done with 5 tries through that length base on rootstock, massale selection and terroir. This resulted in a ripe and acid vintage, precise and mineral. " Olivier Lamy

● Bourgogne Les Chataigners 2018 $190/Bottle The 2018 Bourgogne Les Chataigners delivers aromas of lime cordial, white flowers and crisp green apple, followed by a medium to full-bodied, pure and mineral palate, framed by chalky dry extract. This beautifully made wine is a superb introduction to one of the Côte de Beaune's finest domaines.
● Saint Aubin La Princée 2018 $240/Bottle | WA 89-91
● Saint Aubin 1er Cru Les Frionnes 2018 $310/Bottle | Vin 91-93 The 2018 Saint-Aubin Les Frionnes 1er Cru comes from deep limestone soils. It has a lifted nose, not unlike the Clos de Meix but slightly more marineinfluenced, with touches of shucked oyster shells. The palate is very harmonious on the entry, offering grapefruit and hints of pineapple and leading to a poised, lightly spiced finish. Very fine.
● Puligny Montrachet Les Tremblots 2018 $410/Bottle | WA 91-93
The 2018 Saint-Aubin La Princée is showing well, opening in the glass with aromas of citrus zest, white flowers and crisp Anjou pear. Medium to full-bodied, elegantly textural and precise, it's saline and incisive, Lamy observing that some two-thirds of this parcel is decidedly cool and windy.
Lamy's superb 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Les Tremblots delivers a striking bouquet of citrus oil, Anjou pear, wet stones and nutmeg, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and searingly mineral palate that's long and penetrating.
● Chassagne Montrachet La Goujonne 2018 $290/Bottle | WA 90-92
● Saint Aubin 1er Cru en Remilly 2018 $410/Bottle | Vin 92-94
A beautiful bouquet of peonies, wild berries, spices and forest floor prefaces the 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet La Goujonne, a medium to full-bodied, layered and complete wine that's deep and elegantly muscular, framed by lively acids and powdery tannins. The best renditions of red Chassagne number among the finest values to be found in the contemporary Côte d'Or, and this cuvée definitely numbers among them.
The 2018 Saint-Aubin En Remilly 1er Cru has a pixelated, mineral-driven bouquet that manages to effortlessly offset the warmth of the growing season. Shucked oyster shell and limestone aromas develop in the glass. The well-balanced palate delivers wonderful harmony and a fine bead of acidity. Almost caressing in texture, with supremely well integrated oak toward the finish. Outstanding.
● Chassagne Montrachet La Concis Du Champs 2018 $410/Bottle | Vin 89-91 The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet La Concis de Champs had wild variations in potential alcohol and acidity levels, caused by differing rootstocks, vine ages, pruning techniques, etc., that made it difficult for Olivier Lamy to pick. This has a bright red apple and lime bouquet that feels well defined. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity and very pure. A lovely touch of bitter lemon enlivens and lends edge on the finish. Excellent.

This is a domaine with a long and distinguished history; the name was originally Bousse d’Or,
meaning Golden Soil. From 1964 to 1997 the winemaker was Gerard Potel who is largely responsible for the domaine’s current standing. On Potel’s death the domaine was acquired by Patrick Landanger who now runs the estate with his son Benoit. The estate’s reputation is underpinned by its vineyard holdings, with the largest ownership in the Caillerets Premier Cru.
● Chambolle Musigny 2018 $495/Bottle
● Pommard 1er Cru Les Jarollieres 2018 $550/Bottle
A pretty and very fresh nose combines notes of various red berry, spice and lovely floral elements. There is both good detail and energy to the refreshing middle weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the bitter cherry-inflected finish.
Here the nose flirts with hints of barnyard on the earthy and fresh red berry aromas. There is more volume if less refinement to the tautly muscular medium-bodied flavors that exude plenty of minerality on the lingering if not especially complex finale.
● Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets 2018 $515/Bottle A fresh, spicy and airy nose offers up notes of red and dark raspberry, kirsch and a hint of plum. The vibrant flavors flash plenty of minerality though the finish is mildly drying and a bit short.
● Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets 60 Ouvrees Cuvee Amphore 2018* $695/Bottle Here the nose is spicier still if even more restrained with its timid notes of red cherry, cranberry and soft floral nuances. The wonderfully elegant and lilting flavors pack good punch before terminating in a youthfully austere and markedly firm finish that exhibits notably better balance.
58
● Corton Bressandes Grand Cru 2018 $695/Bottle This too flirts with barnyard nuances but in this case they are even subtler on the very fresh essence of red currant and warm earth scents. There is very good size, weight and punch to the large-scaled flavors that are at once muscular yet refined, all wrapped in an impressively persistent if firm finish.
● Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru 2018 $720/Bottle This too reflects extremely subtle barnyard hints on the spicier aromas of red and dark cherry, humus and earth. The relatively supple and forward flavors exude a lovely minerality on the impressively complex and persistent finish that also reflects a hint of acid tang.
● Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Le Cailleret 2018 $760/Bottle A gentle application of wood sets off the cool, pure and citrus-inflected green apple, pear and wet stone nuances. The mineral-driven and highly energetic medium-bodied flavors possess solid mid-palate volume before terminating in a firm and youthfully austere finale.
● Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes 2018* $830/Bottle Here the nose is slightly more deeply pitched with its plum and dark berry aromas that offer a wider range of spice and floral elements. The seductive and refinement middle weight flavors also exude a subtle minerality on the slightly warm but persistent finish.

With the
4th generation at the helm, Brice de La Morandière, AnneClaude's nephew and great grandson of founder Joseph Leflaive, continues to work with the same family philosophy of respect for the great "terroirs", humility towards the forces of nature and rigour in their relentless pursuit of excellence in winemaking. Brice joined in January 2017 with the managing director, Pierre Vincent. Significant work has been undertaken to make the winemaking more precise, including the selection of a new type of corks enabling an increased longevity in the wines. The estate has also expanded with nearly 3 hectares replanted in Puligny, 7 hectares acquired in the Mâconnais and with the creation of a new vineyard planned for 2020 in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune.

Domaine Leflaive Vineyard Map
â—? Bourgogne Blanc 2018* $395/Bottle A serious Bourgogne of verve, depth and plenty of "Puligny" finesse. Notes of yellow plum, butter and greengage. This comes from two small vineyards; 'Les Houilleres' and 'Les Parties', lying just south and west of Puligny-Montrachet. Aged in oak barrel (10% new) for 12 months followed by six months in steel tank.
â—? Puligny Montrachet 2018* $765/Bottle | WA 89-91 Aromas of citrus oil, crisp green apple, Anjou pear, dried white flowers and wheat toast introduce the 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Village, a medium to full-bodied, lively and precise wine that's elegantly textural, fine-boned and penetrating. It possesses excellent potential.

62
● Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Le Clavoillon 2018* $1,090/Bottle | WA 90-92 Aromas of fresh peach, white flowers, citrus oil and green apples preface the 2018 PulignyMontrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon, a medium to fullbodied, elegantly satiny wine that's racy and fineboned, with lively acids, a delicate core of fruit and a chalky finish. This has none of the blockiness of yesteryear's Clavoillon.
● Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres 2018* $1,750/Bottle The nose is characteristically sexy, with a nougat, hazelnut, biscuity perfume which is so attractive. The palate however dances very elegantly indeed and lifts this debauchery into something that is tensely structured, very pure and sustained to the finish. A sensual and intellectual Folatieres.
● Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles 2018* $2,190/Bottle | Vin 93-95 Skipping the aromatics, the palate is very well balanced with notes of orange peel and white peach, and a little more lime toward the finish compared to Les Combettes. Good length on the aftertaste and a little more viscosity. Very fine.
● Batard Montrachet Grand Cru 2018* $4,500/Bottle | Vin 95-97 The 2018 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a touch more pungency compared to the Bienvenue, but perhaps not quite the same alluring charm, at least at this primordial stage. The palate is where it’s at: supremely well balanced, exuding a sense of coiled-up energy countered by a dense, persistent finish.
● Chevalier Montrachet Grand Cru 2018* $5,750/Bottle | Vin 96-98 The 2018 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru has an intense bouquet of lemon thyme, crushed limestone, and traces of orange pith and citrus peel that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is underpinned with a fine, almost razor-sharp bead of acidity. There is a wonderful crescendo of flavor here, leading to a multifaceted, lemongrass-tinged finish that lingers with a saline aftertaste. This is sheer class, a tremendous Chevalier-Montrachet.
63
This is a domaine with just six hectares of vines but its reputation far exceeds its size.
Matt Kramer extolled the virtues of Michel Niellon’s wines in his 1990 volume. Making Sense of Burgundy and unsurprisingly demand is still strong in the United States. The vineyards here are exceptionally well sited with a high proportion of old vines. Grapes are whole bunch pressed and matured in barrels until the next harvest. Only 20-25% of the barrels are new. As well as its impressive range of white wines the domaine also produces a red from the Clos St. Jean whose pale colour can mislead as it is a wine of great intensity which is enjoyable on release but has the potential to age.
64
● Bourgogne Blanc 2018 $165/Bottle Pungent aromas of straw, petrol and citrus lead to nicely energetic and agreeably textured flavors that possess just enough depth and persistence to be interesting.
● Chassagne Montrachet 2018 $290/Bottle | JR 16+ Loads of smokiness on the nose with a real drive of fresh peachy fruit. Quite dry at the moment on the mid palate, pleasant but needs time to deal with the oak.
● Chassagne Montrachet 1er Clos St. Jean Rouge 2018 $295/Bottle
● Chassagne Montrachet 1er Clos de la Maltroie 2018 $395/Bottle | JR 17 Rather old-fashioned and almost artless – in a good way. Straight forward, backward and tight but not austere, with the promise of much to come. Chewy end.
● Chevalier Montrachet Grand Cru 2018* $2,690/Bottle Here the nose is clean with a very ripe combination of plum liqueur, cassis, spice and violet scents. The rich, palate coating and highly seductive flavors possess a velvety mouth feel thanks to the copious amount of dry extract that imparts a sappy quality to the beautifully long finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth.
A more elegant nose is comprised by notes of various red berries, and in particular cherry, along with hints of freshly turned earth and soft humus nuances. The succulent and juicy middle weight flavors possess an attractive vibrancy though, like the straight Chassagne, the lingering finish is not particularly complex.
● Chassagne Montrachet 1er Clos St. Jean Blanc 2018 $395/Bottle A gentle touch of wood sets off aromas of green fruit, citrus, petrol and a similar whiff of soft floral nuances. There is both good volume and richness to the middle weight flavors that also exude a subtle minerality on the focused, intense and impressively lengthy finish.

Domaine Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey is located in Chassagne-Montrachet. Pierre-Yves Colin was part of his father’s winery, Domaine Marc Colin and decided to start his own negoce in 2001. In 2005, he got 6 hectares from the family vineyards. Considered as one of the preeminent young producers of white Burgundy, he delivered new wine techniques wherein he used demimuid (a 600-liter oak barrels) barrels, eschew the use of battonage, making each of his bottlings a clear expression of its terroir and mineral-driven Chardonnay.
66
● Pernand Vergelesses Village Les Combottes 2018 $295/Bottle A touch of cedary spice. Lifted citrus and stony mineral. Spicy and intense on the palate, totally mouth-watering, with depth as well as length. Long spicy/mealy finish. A serious baby.
● Saint Aubin 1er Cru les Champlots 2018 $460/Bottle A little more obvious oak here in spice and cedar but not intrusive. Really intense fruit, more green fruits than citrus. Tight and coiled but generous in fruit. Not as long as some but all in balance.
● Saint Aubin Village Le Banc 2018 $295/Bottle
● Meursault Narvaux Village 2018 $620/Bottle | JR17
Very slightly reductive giving a flinty note on the nose. Typical for St-Aubin in this vintage. On the palate, tight and juicy and generous in citrus but also that flinty note. There’s a depth and ripeness of citrus but also that lovely tension, rounded off with a gentle creaminess.
Broader and riper fruit character compared with the Garenne. Dusty lemon and lime, with clementine and a touch of cedar. Stony dustiness balances the generous fruit. Creamy, smooth, tight and long, rounded in that creamy character.
● Santenay Vieilles Vignes Rouge 2018 $350/Bottle
● Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Chenevottes 2018* $890/Bottle | JR17.5
Mid cherry. Peppery dark-red fruit. Lithe and fruity but not simple. Chalky tannins. Tight and fresh.
Deliciously creamy aroma with a light spice and clementine notes. But chalky too. Intense and quite open. Super-intense bright, ripe lemon, with just a hint of charry reduction on the aftertaste. Great purity of fruit that holds its head above the oak but the oak contributes to the texture and fabulous length.

MÂCONNAIS AND AUXEY DURESSES
68
69
The
wines from Domaines Leflaive are produced outside Puligny-Montrachet from vineyards in the Mâconnais which they own, and from fruit sourced from trusted growers in the Côte Chalonnaise and the Côte de Beaune. The grapes are grown using biodynamic principles and are vinified in the same way as the wines of the Domaine.
● Pouilly Fuisse 2018 $325/Bottle | Vin 89-91
● Macon-Verze 2018 $250/Bottle | Vin 87-89
The 2018 Pouilly-Fuissé comes from two hectares on Solutré rock and is aged in barrel with 15% new oak. It has a lively hazelnut and walnut bouquet, oddly reminiscent of a Meursault Genevrières, which is not a bad thing when you think about it. The palate is well balanced with hints of peach and pineapple on the entry, fine weight in the mouth and a precise if not overly complex finish. Very fine.
The 2018 Mâcon-Verzé comes from nine different vineyards over 13 hectares and is matured in stainless steel, concrete and a small amount of used oak. This was scheduled to be bottled toward the end of 2019. It has pretty Granny Smith apple and wet limestone aromas that are well defined. The palate is crisp and fresh, with a strong citric element and a touch of sour lemon toward the powerful finish.
● Pouilly Fuisse La Chaneau 2018 $350/Bottle
● Macon-Verze Les Chenes 2018 $280/Bottle | Vin 89-91
A background whiff of sulfur is present on the essence of pear, apple and lemon zest-suffused nose. There is better vibrancy to the well-detailed and nicely intense medium weight flavors that exude more evident minerality on the chiseled, clean, balanced and appealingly dry finale.
The 2018 Mâcon-Verzé Les Chênes comes from a west-facing 3.5-hectare parcel that is designed to be a Côte de Beaune take on the Mâconnais. It has a steely bouquet of apple blossom, granite and sea cave aromas, focused and intense. The palate is clean and precise, displaying a superb line of acidity and impressive nervosité toward the persistent finish and a saline tang on the aftertaste.
● Auxey Duresses Blanc 2018 $325/Bottle A discreet amount of wood can be found on the ripe and fresh white orchard fruit aromas that are liberally laced with citrus nuances. The delicious and seductive if somewhat rustic and frank middle weight flavors conclude in a bone dry, focused and sneaky long finish.
*Denotes limited availability
● Macon-Verze Les Monte 2018 (1.5L) $680/Magnum Both creamy and mineral on the nose. Spicy and chewy on the palate with lovely green fruit and citrus freshness. Smooth and rounded with a tight bright finish. Moreish and mouth-watering, deep and long.
