Alberti’s facade for Tempio Malatestiano can be read through the lens of an architectural syntax. He uses ideas and methods employed by the Romans as a way to organize and ornament both the interior and the facade, namely by columnar orders and the use of the triumphal arch. In Tempio Malatestiano, columns and pillars are employed in three ways. Firstly, as an element supporting an arch. Secondly, as an ornamental cap of a pilaster.
