As the new Artistic Director of the San Diego Latino Film Festival, I am deeply honored to commemorate the festival's 31st edition, a distinguished platform showcasing the best of Latinx cinema within the United States. Over the span of three decades, Latin American film has experienced notable expansion, marked not only by the proliferation of productions but also by the diverse array of artistic forms, conceptual explorations, and geographical origins. The privilege of participating in this year’s edition affords a profound opportunity to witness this dynamic growth, promising an immersive and intellectually stimulating experience.

This year's festival is purposefully designed to engage with emergent voices and contemporary perspectives through a meticulously curated selection of 56 features and 79 shorts. Against the backdrop of global pandemics and persistent economic, social, and political turmoil, we assert the profound capacity of cinema to serve as a conduit for cultural reconnection and collective envisioning of more auspicious futures. The 2024 Program unites us in exploration of films that delve into the depths of our internal landscapes while underscoring our integral roles within society. Each artist featured in this year’s program contributes to the exaltation of Latinx heritage, resilience, and unity, emphasizing the imperative of amplifying Latin American cinema in a nation where the Latino population exceeds 20%.

Moreover, this year’s program will also prominently spotlight Argentinian cinema, presenting a curated collection of 10 awardwinning films originating from the country. For SDLFF, this strategic emphasis reflects both an editorial prerogative and a principled stance. It serves to celebrate the rich tapestry of Argentinian cinematic expression while also standing in steadfast solidarity with the industry amidst prevailing challenges, including fiscal constraints and censorship.

I extend my sincere appreciation to the members of the Selection Committee, and the dedicated programming team for their unwavering commitment in curating this year's film selection. To all attendees, I extend a cordial invitation to partake in the experience that is the San Diego Latino Film Festival, a celebration of cinematic excellence and cultural resonance.

I wish you all a warm welcome to SDLFF!

Welcome to the 31st edition of the San Diego Latino Film Festival, a true celebration of cinematic excellence and cultural diversity. As the new Exhibitions Senior Manager at the Media Arts Center San Diego, it is both an honor and a privilege to spearhead the operational aspects of this remarkable festival. With several years of dedicated service to the festival under my belt, I am thrilled to take on this new role and contribute to the vibrant legacy of this important event. This year's festival promises to bring a new and fresh perspective to all of its programs, showcasing the rich tapestry of Latinx stories and perspectives. As we navigate through the evolving landscape of the film industry, the significance of presenting these stories in a proper cinema setting cannot be overstated. The immersive experience of a theater enhances the emotional resonance of each narrative, fostering a deeper connection between the audience and the compelling stories on screen.

I am also excited about the opportunity to expand the festival's reach and appeal to newer and younger generations. Our commitment to growth is rooted in the belief that these stories deserve a broader platform, resonating with diverse audiences. By incorporating innovative approaches and embracing emerging filmmakers and their voices, we aim to make the San Diego Latino Film Festival a dynamic and inclusive space for all film enthusiasts. Despite these exciting changes, the festival will continue to serve as a platform for both established and emerging artists, providing a space for their voices to be heard and celebrated. Through thoughtprovoking narratives, poignant documentaries, live music, and art, our program this year contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the Latinx experience overall.

Join us in this cinematic journey, as we not only celebrate the achievements of Latinx filmmakers but also pave the way for a future where their stories continue to captivate and inspire audiences across all generations.

I’ll see you at the movies!
