Welcome

From the MAYOR OF NEW YORK

As Mayor of New York City, I am delighted to join New York City’s original City Guide in welcoming you to the greatest city in the world. This year, more than 54 million visitors will come to New York City, and we want every one of you to have a unique and unforgettable experience. From world-class restaurants to one-of-a-kind food trucks, from the theaters of Broadway to free summer concerts in our parks, from boutiques to vintage shops — ours is a city with something to offer everyone. And to make the most of your time here, experience this city the way New Yorkers do, by visiting neighborhoods in every borough. Spend an afternoon exploring the incomparable Brooklyn Museum or New York Botanical Garden. Visit Chinatown in Flushing, Queens for incredible cuisine and culture. Ride the Staten Island Ferry—and then stay and have lunch at one of the best pizza restaurants in the city. Visit the Bronx Zoo and make this a trip the family will never forget. Every borough and every neighborhood has something to offer. Take a walk off the beaten path and explore some of the hidden gems and local spots that make New York City the greatest place on earth. Welcome! Yours sincerely,

Bill de Blasio

ONGOING Mo Willems’ beloved children’s book characters are distinctly New York, from Trixie’s very first Brooklyn “Aggle Flaggle Klabble!” to the Mike Nichols and Elaine May inspirations of Elephant and Piggie to the public transportation-obsessed Pigeon. The new exhibition THE ART AND WHIMSY OF MO WILLEMS at the NEWYORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY brings together original art, sketches, animation cels, and sculptures, all framed by Willems’ life in New York and how it influenced his iconic characters. The show is in an immersive, child-friendly space, featuring an imaginative New York cityscape on the gallery walls, two reading areas, and family audio guides narrated by Willems himself. (Grown-ups will enjoy the museum’s four centuries of history and art: an offbeat, and often surprising, bite of the city’s culture.) 170 Central Park W. The historic SALMAGUNDI CLUB in the West Village does the hosting, free and open to the public 1-5pm daily. 47 Fifth Ave. (12th St.), 212-206-8986, americanwatercolorsociety.org

ongoing New York’s latest resident is a 122-foot-long dinosaur so new it has yet to be formally named. Going by “Titanosaur” for now, it has taken up residence at the AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY, in a cast of 84 fossil bones that represent one of the biggest dinosaurs ever found. The Titanosaur is so large, in fact, it doesn’t fit in the gallery: a 39-foot neck extends out towards the elevator banks. But there’s a key difference that sets the musical apart: Charlie and Simon (Lola’s out-of-drag persona) bond over the reality that neither one has lived up to his father’s expectations. This pivotal moment comes during the number, “I’m Not My Father’s Son,” the song that sets the stage for the show’s resonant message of how acceptance can lead to great things. It’s no accident the show’s mantra is, “When you change your mind about someone, you can change your whole world.” Not a bad foundation for a mega musical that has the perfect blend of humanity (a Fierstein signature), talent (the whole cast shines), and glitz-driven “transformations.” And for the record, Lauper’s ingenious score makes you wonder why she’s never written for Broadway before.

Hopefully, this isn’t her last professional stroll along the Great White Way. One final note: the title can be misleading. Some theatregoers might equate “kinky” with edginess, even fetishism, but as someone who has seen the musical more than once and watched the reactions of the kids—mostly ten and up—“kinky” is better defined here as as “fantastical.” With its message of acceptance, Kinky Boots is an especially nice fit for adolescents at odds with themselves and the world around them. As the company sings in the show’s final number: Just be who you wanna be Never let ‘em tell you who you ought to be. Just be With dignity Celebrate your life triumphantly.

Kinky Boots is playing at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, 302 W. 45th St. For tickets call 212-239-6200 or visit kinkybootsthemusical.com.

Cultural Arts

Art, Architecture, and Heritage Here are some of the top current shows among the city’s extraordinary array of cultural institutions.

David Paler

MUSEUM OF JEWISH HERITAGE— A LIVING MEMORIAL TO THE HOLOCAUST

Be moved by the Museum of Jewish Heritage.

Lower Manhattan’s Museum of Jewish Heritage celebrates the lives and traditions of both those who survived and those who perished in the Shoah. The museum’s three-story Core Exhibition doesn’t shy from chronicling the atrocities that took place, but it also serves as a testament to the strength and perseverance of Jewish culture. Rich with artifacts and film clips, MJH is an important institution worth visiting. Don’t miss artist Andy Goldsworthy’s beautiful living memorial, Garden of Stones. Current exhibitions include Seeking Justice: The Leo Frank Case Revisited, the story of Leo Frank, lynched and decades later pardoned for the murder of a 13-year-old factory worker in Atlanta in 1915. 36 Battery Pl. (1st Pl..), 646-437-4200, mjhnyc.org

GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM Housed in an iconic Frank Lloyd Wright spiraling building, The Guggenheim Museum contains one of the world’s finest collections of modern and contemporary art, including works by Picasso, Matisse, and Modigliani. Through April 27th, the Guggenheim presents Peter Fischli David Weiss: How to Work Better, the most comprehensive survey to date of two Swiss artists who collaborated for over three decades on 300-plus works of photography, sculpture, video, and installation art. To inspire future architects, the museum recently launched a new multimedia architecture guide for kids (ages 7-12), which reveals the building’s design secrets. 1071 Fifth Ave. (89th St.), 212-423-3500, guggenheim.org MUSEUM OF MODERN ART (MOMA) Since its 1929 founding, the MoMA has been at the forefront of the world’s cutting edge art scene. Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Kahlo are just the beginning of an incredible permanent collection, which is supplemented by provoking temporary shows. Edgar Degas is best known for his stunning Impressionist paintings of dancers, but the new exhibition Edgar Degas: A Strange New Beauty (opened March 26) highlights the artist’s modern, daring, and rarely seen monotype prints. 11 W. 53rd St. (btw. Fifth & Sixth Aves.), 212-708-9400, moma.org

INSIDER TIPS Many of the city’s museums offer free admission for select hours on the first Friday of every month, usually in the early evening.

On Broadway

Check out more theater news at cityguideny.com/theater

Springtime for Broadway: Bring on the New Musicals By GRIFFIN MILLER true events, the show comes wrapped in a score by Steve Martin—yes, the same “wild and crazy guy” whose King Tut costume is on display at “Saturday Night Live–The Exhibition” (see p. 41)—and singer/songwriter Edie Brickell who, incidentally, met husband Paul Simon in 1988 while performing on SNL. Another new musical with factual roots is Shuffle Along, about a show that became a Roaring ‘20s blockbuster against all odds. Considering the Broadway royalty heading the cast (Tony winners Audra McDonald, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and Billy Porter) and the score by early 20thcentury music legends Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake, Shuffle Along may soon be dubbed the Musical Sensation of 2016. The production reunites Tony winners George C. Wolfe (director) and Savion Glover (choreographer), who collaborated on Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk in 1996. Jeremy Daniel

Manuel Harlan, London Production

Passionate theatregoers know that new seasons steamroll into New York as twoparters: late summer through winter veer to the drama/comedy side, while spring is when the musicals come out to play. There are exceptions on both ends, of course, but this year’s spring collection is playing to form with six new musicals and one revival boasting the crème de la crème of Broadway stars.

Eighties Wall Street hits Broadway in the new musical American Psycho.

Spring 2016’s groundswell includes composer Duncan Sheik’s big buzz Wall Street musical American Psycho starring Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson alum Benjamin Walker and Tony winner Alice Ripley (Next to Normal). Having sold out in London, where critics dubbed it “pure, decadent pleasure,” the show arrives on these shores with direction by Olivier-winner Rupert Goold (King Charles III), choreography by Tony nominee Lynne Page (La Cage Aux Folles), and a script by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Glee). On the flip side of the musical spectrum is Bright Star, a romance set in the Southern U.S. during WWII. Based on 48 www.cityguideny.com

nominee Claudia Shear with Tim Federle (book), Nathan Tysen (lyricist), and Chris Miller (music). As for the spring’s sole revival entry, it’s She Loves Me, an old-fashioned romantic comedy set in a parfumarie. Featuring a score by Tony winners Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock—the same team that created the music for Fiddler on the Roof, currently playing to standing ovations at the Broadway Theatre—She Loves Me’s cast includes three Tony winners: Laura Benanti, Jane Krakowski, and Michael McGrath. IN OTHER BROADWAY NEWS... Three-time Tony nominee Rebecca Luker (who just happens to be married to Danny Burstein, aka Tevye in the above-cited Fiddler on the Roof, is taking over the role of Helen Bechdel in last year’s Tonywinning musical, Fun Home, from April 5th to May 22nd. She will be covering for Tony nominee Judy Kuhn, who is having hip surgery. “I’m so thrilled that Rebecca is stepping in for me— she’s a dear friend, and I admire her work so much...and I can’t wait to return to the show painfree and with a new hip,” said Kuhn, who is set to return to the show May 24th. Finally Finding Neverland is not only flying forward with its new J. M. Barrie—Tony nominee Tony Yazbeck (On the Town)—it looks like Kelsey Grammer can’t get enough of the heartwarming show (even though one of his roles is the villainous Captain Hook!). The Frasier star has extended his run through April 3rd, which is only a small window, so seize it if you can. (For the record, the show itself celebrates its oneyear Broadway anniversary on April 15th.) Greg Mooney, Alliance Theatre in Atlanta Production

she’s waitress/pie-maker Jenna in a show inspired by Adrienne Shelly’s popular film of the same name. The acclaimed cast (the productions sold out in Boston) is directed by Tony winner Diane Paulus and features a book by Jessie Nelson (I Am Sam) and score by five-time Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles. The campiest entry of the year without question is Disaster!, a musical comedy on steroids that plunges head-on into Hollywood’s overstuffed cache of catastrophe flicks and emerges soaked, singed, and singing. The dandy cast includes Tony winners Faith Prince and Roger Bart, Drama Desk Award winner Rachel York and Emmy and Grammy nominee Seth Rudestsky, who co-wrote the show with Jack Plotnick (who also directed).

Ponder immortality with the musical fantasy Tuck Everlasting.

The final newbie of the season is Tuck Everlasting, a musical fantasy that poses the question, “If you could live forever would you?” Broadway vets Carolee Carmello and Terrence Mann (both three-time Tony nominees) join Newsie’s Andrew Keenan-Bolger, Emmy winner Michael Park, 11-year old Sarah Charles Lewis, and others in this groundbreaking production by Tony

Taste of the Town

Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steak House: Perfect Steaks, Great Atmosphere BY Richard Jay Scholem Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steak House is a place of glamour, excitement, red meat, and much more. It pulsates with the rhythm and energy of midtown. Its soaring, twostory-high windows offer a spectacular view of Radio City Music Hall, Rockefeller Center, and the parade of pedestrians along Sixth Avenue. Broadway’s theaters are just a block or two away.

Inside, it’s an imposing palace of high ceilings, winding staircases, balconies, woody columns, a back-lighted bar, wall decorations, massive art pieces, and wine cellars that offer diners over 2,000 selections from a stock of nearly 30,000 bottles. All this combines to make Del Frisco’s the ultimate choice for impressing a client or celebrating a special occasion. The menu tells much of the restaurant’s story. USDA aged prime beef is fresh not frozen and shipped from the Midwest daily. Warm loaves of bread are baked daily, and all salad dressings and desserts are made in-house. Del Frisco’s isn’t about red meat alone. Lobster, fish, lamb, and veal chops receive equal billing, but the focus is always on the best in basic, understandable food: shrimp

cocktail, crab cakes, Caesar salad, and meat and potatoes (prepared four ways). Steaks are boldly seasoned with salt and pepper and sport an agreeably charred surface. Guests are asked to cut into the center of their steaks before eating them to ensure they are done as ordered. My 24-ounce porterhouse was the mediumrare, mineral-flavored beauty I anticipated, as were my wife’s two towering, juicy, eight-ounce lamb chops. A pristine Chilean sea bass, kissed by a sundried tomato and leek sauce, was an appropriate pick for delicate eaters, while a 22-ounce portion of rich, broiled Australian lobster tails certainly wasn’t too much of a good thing. The Spinach Supreme, the mother of all creamed spinach, and an order of king-sized onion rings were all the side dishes needed by four hungry diners. Consider the heft of the entrées when ordering appetizers and target the lighter choices: no-filler crab cakes napped in lobster sauce; super-fresh, briny oysters on the half shell; and shrimp any which way. Full or not, order dessert, even if two or more share one. Select the luxuriant swirl of strawberries, vanilla ice cream, and Grand Marnier in the Strawberry Romanoff; the decadent banana bread pudding; and especially the huge wedge of exemplary six-layer lemon cake. It, like Del Frisco’s itself, is a wow!

The ultimate choice for celebrating a special occasion...

At the entrance, a staircase leads up to the glass-enclosed Treehouse Bar, where guests can enjoy private dinners with handcrafted cocktails and sweet and savory snacks like chicken dumplings or Maine lobster toast. Downstairs, the 130-seat, loft-like main space is divided into a bar and dining room with denim banquettes and a barn roof. The open kitchen and glass-enclosed wine cave allow guests a peek behind the scenes, while Chef Whitaker’s theatrical style is reflected in the carving station, where a variety of meats are carved and whole-roasted fish, lobster, and casseroles are plated in the center of the dining room. 23 Grand St. (Ave. of the Americas), 212-201-9119, davidburkekitchen.com

Craft beers in a landmark location: Heartland Brewery and Rotisserie.

New York City’s most famous landmark, the Empire State Building, now houses New York’s number one brewery, a two-story 450-seat Heartland Brewery equipped with two large bars and four giant flat-screen TV’s. Heartland is known for New York’s freshest craft beers, including six classic brews and a wide range of seasonal ones, served at their peak within one to two weeks of brewing. New York’s newest breakfast sensation is here, too: every weekday between 8am and 10am, $15.95 covers a full buffet of farmfresh eggs, homemade French toast, home fries, bacon, fruit salad, yogurt, and cereal. 350 Fifth Ave. (34th St.), 212-563-3433, heartlandbrewery.com
