Hello, As a graduate of the Boston Architectural College I have learned to be a designer in the broadest sense. With an educational background in architecture and historic preservation, recent professional experience in the field of space planning, and interests spanning interior design, furniture design, research, and writing, I have a diversity of skills to contribute to projects across multiple scales and disciplines. I am a strong visual and spatial thinker by nature and always motivated by craft and detail.

1 FRANKENDESK: Emerson College Library Renovation
With no budget for a full-scale renovation, the director of the Emerson College library has continually sought to update the space in a piecemeal fashion. As with all these projects the goal was simply to make the space function better for both staff and students. Following a downward trend in the circulation of print materials the director felt the amount of space given over to the service desks was unnecessarily large. The layout had long been confusing to students as well, with various functions split between two service desks flanking, but facing away from the main entrance. In order to rectify this we concluded that we should move and consolidate the two desks into one smaller footprint in a more visibly prominent location.

SERVICE DES RELOCATIO
Iterations of new desk footprint and corresponding entry elevations. Several layouts were proposed juggling various priorities in its reconfiguration: ease of movement for librarians and other staff, desired levels of visibility for different positions, encompassing entryways to areas not accessible to students, compressing enough to maximize new seating, while maintaining a comfortable amount of space for staff to work.

What seemed like it would be a relatively simple projected ended up becoming far more complicated than simply moving some millwork. Moving the service desks necessitated the relocation of all 22 computer workstations as well. Data and electrical wiring had to be moved to meet the new locations of all this millwork. The demolition and construction were carefully staged, with millwork disassembled and stored in another area of the library while new carpet was placed. The desks were then altered and reconstructed on site and after being placed, rewired with data and electrical, fitted with new counter tops, and refinished. New lighting was also required to reflect the new arrangement. The money saved by not commissioning new millwork left a large sum of money with which to purchase some new furniture and an opportunity to add some much-need color to the space as well as an additional 16 seats.

2 CAMPUS SHUFFLE:
Former Office Space Becomes Academic
e
user-centered planning
A typical exercise in campus space planning is the constant shuffle of departments from one floor or one building to another and determining best possible use to backfill the vacant space. as an educational institution, classroom space is always given a priority. One group of offices was determined to be occupying far more space than was necessary for their operations. A smaller footprint in another building was chosen and a new layout designed. This move freed up the vacant space for conversion to classrooms, a configuration already mirrored in floors above.

Typical classroom planning has left awkward and unusable spaces inside the classrooms. New designs make use of valuable square footage by carving out a place for students to sit and wait for their classes, charge electronic devices or do some last minute studying.

In relocating a group of offices from one building to another, the focus was on maximizing efficiency while implementing new standards for workplaces on campus. Offices are provided for heads of departments, while open offices using standard desk systems are provided for other staff members. Offices, reception desks, meeting and conference rooms are all planned with predetermined standard square footage.

3 RESIDENCE LIFE:
Emerson College Temporary Student Housing
In preparation for a major building rehabilitation, the facilities department must undertake the daunting task of finding new locations, both permanent and temporary for the building’s occupants. In this case, a large number of them are students housed in dormitories in the building’s upper ten floors. After a potential property is identified, I meet with directors of housing and residence life in order to look at how many students can feasibly be housed. The goal is obviously as many as possible while not exceeding the occupancy limit. Taking existing plans created in a variety of programs, new plans are created in CAD and then planned reusing the existing dormitory furnishings.

GRAPHIC PRESENTATION
Outside of the design of physical space on campus I frequently create graphics and presentations that are used to conceptualize or visualize other aspects of space use on campus. They are frequently used in presentations by heads of facilities and real estate to convince members of the college’s board of directors and trustees of potential changes; they are used to convince department heads that a proposed new location will be adequately suited to their needs; or, they are used by students to better understand where things are located on campus.

5 ZONA PEATONAL:
Genius Loci on the Camino de Santiago Completed during an immersive month-long study of the architectural culture of Galicia, based in the historic pilgrimage city of Santiago de Compostela, this project seeks to renew a sense of place for the pilgrimage route as it wends through the muddled suburban surroundings that have grown up around the historic city center. With a rich material culture and a tradition of building in granite, Santiago is a city strongly defined by its ground plane; it is impossible not be aware of what is happening underfoot, a landscape responsive to the different types of movement that take place on its surface.

Outside the city the artfulness is lost. So too is the Camino de Santiago, mostly overwhelmed by modern development. An analysis of the half-mile long section I chose to work with reveals dozens of changes in ground surface treatments, hardly defining any route, pilgrimage or otherwise. My proposal is meant to strengthen the connection to the historic center in this final approach by extending its ground plane outward. A blanket of paving would supplant the messy array of asphalts and, through subtle modulation, give priority to the pilgrims who have walked hundreds of miles to reach this point. The passage of cars and other types of movement here become secondary. The improvements to this short stretch of road, however, would be a boon to pilgrims and residents alike.

6 HOUSE FOR AN ARTIST:
Studies in Critical Regionalism A review of seminal texts on the subject of critical regionalism was followed by the study of a site in Lincoln, MA and the proposal of a small residence guided by the principles outlined in the writings. Focusing primarily on spatial qualities my design sought to distort and transform the hall-and-and parlor colonial house, giving its recognizable features like a massive central chimney and central vertical circulation new forms and functions. The front of the house appears as a trope of a house while the rear explodes outward towards the nearby pond while cascading in multiple levels down its sloped site.
