WHERE Welcome to Northwest Oklahoma, home to Vance Air Force Base - training the best military aviators in the world. The City of Enid - home to Vance AFB - has agricultural roots and a beginning that dates back to the largest land run in history. Today, Enid is a town that respectfully nods to the morals and values of yesteryear and flirtatiously winks at big city conveniences and modern expectations. There’s nothing plain about her. Although popular restaurants and retailers like Chili’s, I-Hop and Old Navy give many newcomers a sense of familiarity, it’s the unique and privately owned businesses, sense of community and commitment to quality of life that give Enid depth and charm beyond your average cookie-cutter town. Let’s face it - as good as sizzling fajitas coupled with a cold margarita or a stack of buttery pancakes paired with a bottomless pot of coffee may be, most of us need something a bit more to get acclimated to a new town and to feel more at home. Yes, moving always jolts a shockwave through us—there is nothing admittedly fun about unpacking boxes, straining muscles, finding valuables broken and realizing you have way more stuff than you know what to do with. Even before the boxes arrive, there’s so much to consider: Where are we going to live? What school is right for my kids? Which church should I attend? Who sells organic milk? What channel airs NBC? And, where’s the local pub? Maybe you’re an airman, a student

To Begin pilot, an instructor pilot, the new flight doc or a dependent. Perhaps this is your first military move, or it’s your fifteenth. Have you always hung your hat in a small town and ordered a plain ol’ cup of Joe? Or, is the big city your home and a venti-low-fat-no-whip-decaf-mocha your daily grind? Whoever you are and wherever you come from, this guide is for you. Here’s a thumbnail sketch of where to begin in Enid. Read on—and make yourself at home. Main Street Enid is all about creating quality of life. “The whole reason we exist,” explains Main Street Enid Program Director Kelly Tompkins, “is to revitalize the downtown area and make it beautiful.” Main Street is a non-profit national program that boasts a fourpoint approach (design, economic restructuring, membership & promotion) and focuses on the life of a community. And by the life of a community, every aspect is included from aesthetic appeal and historical integrity to economic vitality and special events. Celebrating 19 years of revitalization (1994-2013), Main Street Enid started by attracting local and regional people to the downtown area through promoting special events. Oktoberfest, held on the first Saturday in October, is an authentic German experience for the young and old. Main Street recreates an old German beer hall and entertains downtown Enid with polka bands, cloggers, German fare such as bratwurst and kolaches, 5

and children’s activities. Enid Lights Up the Plains follows during the Thanksgiving weekend and creates a magical time filled with live entertainment at the Courthouse Gazebo, carriage rides, Santa, merchant sales, food vendors, and, of course, a spectacular fireworks display choreographed to holiday music. Main Street Enid’s special events and downtown revitalization have reached many benchmarks in their 19 years’ existence; however, the program will always be a work in progress. ENID AT A GLANCE.

The town of Enid was born at noon on September 16, 1893, when more than one hundred thousand land seekers charged into the Cherokee Outlet seeking free land and a new start in life. Despite the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, and oil booms and busts, Enid has continued to enjoy a steady growth and a diversified economy over the years. GETTING Whether you choose to arrive by air or land, getting to Enid is rather simple. Traveling from Enid to other destinations is also a snap. Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a brief rundown of Enidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s roadways, air, and railway transportation systems.

d Enid is served by US Highways 60, 412, 64, and 81 (all are four-lane highways). d Interstate 35 is 28 miles east and Interstate 40 is 60 miles south of Enid. d I-35 extends north to Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Minnesota and south to the Texas/Mexico border. I-40 runs continuously from the East Coast to the West Coast. d The Cimarron Turnpike (US 412 and US 60) extends from Tulsa and the Arkansas River Navigation System to the Northwest Passage (Oklahoma City to Colorado corridor). The Chisholm Trail (US 81) stretches from Kansas to Texas, paralleling and providing relief for I-35. t Two major freight rail carriers, Burlington Northern/Santa Fe and Union Pacific, provide effective freight service to and from Enid, linking the area to the West Coast and Pacific Rim as well as to the NAFTA corridor to Mexico. t Amtrak passenger service is available coast to coast from Newton, Kansas. j Enid Woodring Regional Airport is located just seven miles east of downtown. The airport is an all-weather, tower-controlled, instrument landing facility capable of handling up to Boeing 737 aircraft and is used primarily by pilots and charter clients. j Airport services include a restaurant, numerous hangar facilities, avionics maintenance facilities, FAA Repair Stations, flight school, air taxi and aircraft rental. j The nearest commercial airport is Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City. 10

STAYING Now that you’re here, first things first—get a good night’s sleep. Vance Cherokee Lodge, located in Bldg. 714, is open twenty-four hours and is staffed with helpful, knowledgeable people. They can be reached at 580-213-7358. Make sure you call ahead and have a copy of your orders so you can be sure space is available. By staying here, you will not only be guaranteed clean sheets and fresh towels, you will also get spooled up on the community rather quickly. In fact, many consider this the off-therecord newcomers’ hub. If Vance Cherokee Lodge doesn’t have any vacancies, don’t worry, Enid has plenty of hotels and motels that provide comfort. Be sure to ask about military discounts; many accommodations offer a military rate. Keep the following list handy for when friends and family come to visit. TAKING Before we move on to serious matters like where to shop, eat and play, let’s make sure you get properly checked in and are good to go. Although this guide provides a great overview of what to do and what to expect, you might need something more in-depth. That’s where the Airman and Family Readiness Center comes in—they are equipped to help. Even if you think more information is unnecessary, be sure to pay the Airman and Family Readiness Center a visit—they have a wealth of available resources and are extremely willing to help. Vance AFB also has one of the best newcomers’ orientation programs. So, make sure you attend an orientation as soon as you can—you’ll feel more connected to both the military and Enid communities. Don’t waste time being scared and confused. There are plenty of friendly people out there who are chock-full of information and willing to help— they won’t come knocking on your door, but all you have to do is get out and ask.

Duty Station Check-in

Once you’ve arrived and slept well, check in at your duty station – remember first impressions are lasting – be sharp. Incoming military personnel should in-process the first day after arrival. To speed up the process, make sure you have all your records. Generally speaking, in-processing

Care of Business

at Vance AFB begins in the orderly room of the squadron to which the active duty military member is assigned. From there you should be directed to Military Personnel Flight (MPF). MPF in-processing can be completed Monday-Friday at 9:30 a.m. in Suite 124 of Building 500. Customer Service Hours are from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday-Wednesday and Friday, and Thursday from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. For more information, call the customer service section of MPF at DSN 448-7500 or commercially at 580-231-7500.

Get a P.O. Box

Many of you are probably Internet bill-pay savvy and not concerned about whether or not you receive your bills and mail. But, are you sure you want to miss your latest subscription to Sports Illustrated or In Style? Then, there’s the rest of us who haven’t caught the web-bill-pay wave and still torture ourselves with monthly check writing—we absolutely count on the United States Postal Service. Regardless of where you may camp out in this field, make sure you contact the Postal Service Center in Bldg. 430 or call 580-231-7204 to get your mail in order (not to be confused with mail order).

If you need to register your car in Oklahoma, Enid tag agencies make the process a snap. Not to mention, as an active-duty military service member, vehicle registration in Oklahoma is deeply discounted. And, by the way, when traveling on base, be sure to show the gate guards some courtesy. They battle the heat in the summer, cold rain in the fall, as well as snow in the winter, just to ensure every vehicle driving on base is legitimate and safe. See map on page 28.

Active duty military members and their families have one of the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most hassle-free, comprehensive medical and dental insurance plans available. However, you must make sure you are properly enrolled. For medical benefits, contact TRICARE at 800-444-5445. Walk-in TRICARE services at the clinic are discontinued as of April 12, 2014. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a dependent, dental insurance is given through MetLife and requires at least one month to officially activate. Call 855-638-8371 to enroll.

HEALTHCARE Choosing the right healthcare facility for you and your family is a concern for many newcomers. Here’s a very general scope of what’s available to you. If you have a condition that surpasses Vance’s Primary Care Clinic’s capabilities, discuss referrals with your physician.

Vance AFB primary clinic

The base clinic is located in Bldg. 810 and can be reached by calling 580-213-7416. Active-duty members, dependents, retirees and their dependents enrolled in TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Plus are treated on an appointment basis. Primary care includes pediatrics, women’s clinic and a wellness clinic. If after hours care is needed, please call the Primary Care Manager at 580-2494471. Clinic hours are Monday thru Friday 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. except for the second and fourth Thursdays of every month when they close at 2 p.m. for training. The clinic pharmacy number is 580-213-7783. Pharmacy hours are 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. The Pharmacy is closed from 12:30 p.m.1:30 p.m. daily.

Area Hospitals & Medical Facilities

Enid has two major hospital facilities, a full-time professional ambulance service, and two minor emergency centers available to the military.

INTEGRIS Bass Baptist Health Center campus includes 207 licensed beds throughout three facilities and is located on the corner of Monroe and Garriott. St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, located at 305 South Fifth, has grown to its current licensed bed capacity of 277 beds and 20 bassinets. See map on page 28. Urgent Care Plus 1805 W. Veterinary Services

It’s worth taking the right steps for the health and safety of your frisky cat or loyal dog. If you live on base, your pets must be registered within one month of moving on base. To register your pet, take its current inoculation certificate to the veterinary clinic in Bldg. 247. Off-base residents must register their pets with the Enid Registration Bureau. Oklahoma requires yearly rabies vaccination, which is administered at the base veterinary clinic or at various veterinary clinics in Enid. The veterinarian from Tinker AFB visits Vance two times each month from 9 a.m.-noon. Call (405)7345780. They conduct vaccinations, heartworm testing, microchipping and other limited outpatient care. Off base, there are many options available. Enid has a high incidence of rabies and parvo. If you have pets – or you get pets while you’re in Enid – be sure to talk to your veterinarian about the appropriate vaccination schedule for your animal(s). All reptiles carry salmonella – so keep your pet away from little grass snakes and other reptiles. Because there is a large stray animal population, it is a good idea to have dogs and cats neutered or spayed, unless you plan to breed them. There are a lot of great places to buy pet supplies in Enid, and many places to board your pets if you have an opportunity to take a vacation away from Enid.

FINDING For many, finding a home is the most stressful component of moving. There’s no question about it, a place to live is essential. If you want to live on base, contact Hunt Companies at (580)234-0498 or Vance Family Housing 4405 Lehr St. (580)2137259 or (580)213-7428. This visit will get you on a housing list as well as provide some idea of how long it will take for a house to become available. Be aware, many moving veterans who want to live on base have already faxed their orders to this office and have been able to get on the housing list in a timely manner. They are usually offered a home rather promptly—it’s just a skill that comes along with experience (or age, depending upon how you look at it.) But, luck may very well be on your side and a house on base may be ready and waiting for you to move right on in.

Rental Properties & Apartments

If you wish to or must rent housing off-base, there are plenty of homes and apartments available. Again, the Housing Referral office will be able to assist you in finding a rental. The folks here have plenty of resources listing rental properties, and for your safety and well-being, every rental recommended by this office must adhere to certain strict guidelines in order to be approved

Purchasing a home

Purchasing a home is an extremely personal choice and should be made after adequate deliberation. Many who have purchased a home in Enid enjoyed their lifestyle. Enid has many realtors who can assist a first-time buyer as well as a seasoned one. Properties in Enid range from beautiful historic homes to brandspanking new. Be sure to do your homework. Visit the Loan Locker

(Linen Exchange) Although you might be squared away and have a place to live, your inbound household goods could still be in transit. Now what are you going to do—sleep on the floor and order pizza for the next week? That’s always an option, but you can also visit the Loan Locker on base. EVENINGS

On the Town

Enid offers movie theaters, bowling, go-carts, night clubs, restaurants and lots of other entertaining activities perfect for a night on the town. Great options for casual dining and a cold drink around the downtown square are PaneVino and Callahan’s, to name a few. For more upscale dining experiences, Costello’s in the Sunset Plaza Shopping Center, offers delicious dishes and an array of fine wines, and PaneVino, located in downtown Enid, is an exquisite tapas bar with unique wines to complement each item on the menu. An evening at home with a movie sounds great, but wouldn’t it be even better with a homemade margarita or a bottle of wine? Stop in at Sundance Liquor in Heritage Hills, Buck’s Wine & Spirits on South Van Buren or Crosstown Liquor on Independence for Enid’s best selection of wine, liquor and beer. Or stroll Oakwood Mall which features Dillard’s, JC Penney, Sears and over 50 specialty stores. After a night out on a lazy Saturday morning, you might want to let someone else serve your breakfast. Take a drive out to Wee Too on North 4th Street near the fairgrounds. This unique breakfast and lunch local landmark is certainly a must-visit diner-style experience for all ages.

SCHOOLS For those of you with children, enrolling your kids in school is most likely on the top of your priority list. Finding the right school for your child is of great concern, and lucky for you, Enid has some great public and private schools. Here’s a breakdown of elementary, middle and high schools, both public and private.

Public Schools in Enid

Enid public schools consist of one high school, three middle schools and ten elementary schools, which are commonly referred to as “neighborhood” schools. The district also has a nationally recognized alternative school, as well as an adult education center. In February 2010, more than $99 million in school bonds were approved to provide 2 new elementary schools, new buses, maintenance and new technology for Enid public schools. Expansion Management Magazine, in its Education Quotient ratings, has awarded a Blue Ribbon for academic excellence to the Enid Public School District. Chisholm public schools have a small school setting with a large school atmosphere. Chisholm High School, 4018 W. Carrier Road, offers all levels of core subjects and a wide variety of electives and advanced placement courses. Chisholm Middle 24

For your Children

School, built in 1996, is the newest building in the Chisholm School District. Located at 4202 W. Carrier Road, CMS is home to grades six, seven and eight. Accelerated programs are offered in math and English. Chisholm Elementary, located at 300 Colorado Avenue, provides instruction for pre-kindergarten through the fifth grade plus transitional first grade. Pioneer-Pleasant Vale schools are comprised of Pleasant Vale Elementary, Pioneer Junior High School and Pioneer High School. The elementary campus is located at 6020 E. Willow, while the junior high and high schools are located six miles east of Waukomis on a county road commonly called the Pioneer Road. The combined enrollment of all schools is approximately 600. Private Schools in Enid

With a few exceptions, Enid private schools mostly specialize in faith-based education. Here’s a list and a brief description of local pri-

vate schools. Saint Joseph Catholic School is located on the south side of Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 110 N. Madison, offering pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. This school provides small classrooms, excellent leadership, and quality education in a Christian environment. Oklahoma Bible Academy is Enid’s Christian Junior High and High School and offers a full extracurricular activity program that includes athletic and music programs for grades seven through twelve. They provide an environment that is conducive to quality academic progress as well as Christian character development in an interdenominational setting. OBA is fully accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International and the Oklahoma State Department of Education. Northwestern Oklahoma State University Enid

With an enrollment of more than 400 students, this university provides day and evening courses in several programs leading to a bachelor’s degree and also offers graduate programs leading to a master’s degree. Northwestern-Enid offers upper-division and graduate courses, but works in conjunction with Northern Oklahoma College in Enid to provide a seamless transition from its two-year courses to Northwestern’s bachelor’s degree programs. Northwestern offers bachelor’s degree programs in elementary education, criminal justice, social work, nursing, accounting, business

administration, e-commerce and psychology. Northern Oklahoma College-Enid

This multi-campus community college offers associate degrees in arts, science, and applied science. Through two-plus-two articulation agreements, associate of art and science degrees are transferable to baccalaureate programs. This organization is one of 29 career and technology education centers statewide and provides state-ofthe-art career and technical training to high school and adult students. Autry Tech consistently ranks among the top three CareerTechs in individual enrollment. Autry Tech serves approximately 800 full-time high school and adult students annually. Affectionately known as “Red Carpet Country,” Northwest Oklahoma has one-of-a-kind plans for your weekend or next vacation—from dune buggy tours in Little Sahara State Park and crystal digging at Salt Plains State Park to rattlesnake hunts and a mile-long alabaster cavern underground tour, Northwest Oklahoma is sure to impress even the most skeptical of visitors. If you’re the less outdoorsy type, events like the Watonga Cheese Festival and the Ponca City Fine Arts Festival are sure to keep your weekends actionpacked. In the meantime, get out and enjoy the great outdoors. Here’s a list of fishing lakes and state parks within a day’s drive. Spend a day (or camp for the weekend!) at Roman Nose State Park – near Watonga and Canton. There you will find great hiking and biking trails. Follow the signs toward the pool and natural springs – the cold springs are frigid and refreshing after a hike in the hot sun. The water will gush over your toes and you can follow it into a small cave-like area with a waterfall. Canton Lake is only an hour from Enid and offers a great swimming and boating lake. Bring your fishing pole, your sunscreen and your beach towels. There are also many different camping sites complete with fire pits, grills and picnic tables. A slightly longer drive, but a definite adventure is the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. You’ll hike along beautiful trails with free-roaming buffalo, longhorn steer and hundreds of 44

prairie dogs! The landscape is beautiful and you will certainly enjoy an afternoon of hiking – or a weekend of camping. There are also some great lodging options nearby if you look at www.medicinepark.com. If you’re headed to Oklahoma City (Oak City, “The City,” OKC), take U.S. Highway 81 South into Okarche. Stop at Eischen’s Bar for the state’s best fried chicken and okra. Don’t be ordering any fancy drinks or ask for a side salad…this finger-lickin’-good chicken comes with pickles and onions, a few slices of bread, paper plates and plastic silverware. Order a cold one and you’re set to go. Mmmmm. Take a Left at the stoplight in Okarche and it’s on your right side attached to the IGA. Oklahoma City and Tulsa offer a lot of shopping and dining options, if that’s what you like to do. Bricktown in OKC has some fun and tasty restaurants – it’s near the Chesapeake Arena, home to the NBA’s Oklahoma City and the ballpark. There are several shopping malls (Quail Springs, Penn Square, and more) to shop to your heart’s content. If you head toward Tulsa, check out Utica Square for distinctive shops like Restoration Hardware, White House/Black Market and a natural foods store. The Arts

The Enid Symphony Orchestra Music director Douglas Newell leads this semi-professional orchestra comprised of musicians from within a 120-mile radius. The ESO performs an annual subscription concert series, Christmas at Pops, and a patriotic Fourth of July concert. Historic Treasures

Enid’s turn of the century prominence and its heady days during the oil boom of the 1910s & 1930s gave way to stunning architecture. Wealthy citizens embellished the area’s homes and buildings with beautiful architectural elements. Wide front porches, stained-glass windows, original hardwood floors and clawfoot tubs are still found in the homes of the city’s two historic districts— Kenwood and Waverley.

Kenwood and Waverley Historic Districts The Kenwood Historic Preservation District is a ten-block area located just northwest of downtown Enid. It includes approximately 50 homes and a few businesses that were built between 1895 and 1932. The Waverly Historic Preservation District has 287 historic homes, two churches and one apartment building. Most homes in this district were built between 1906 and the 1920s. Waverly embraces a twenty-fourblock area, eleven blocks west of downtown Enid. These historic districts each have a walking-tour brochure available through the Greater Enid Chamber of Commerce. Local Attractions

Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center Located at 507 S. 4th, the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center and Humphrey Heritage Village stand side by side on the west side of Enid’s historic Government Springs Park. Historical artifacts in the museum tell the story of the Cherokee Strip Land Run and Oklahoma events dating from 1540 to the present. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children. The Humphrey Heritage Village This attraction includes the Glidewell Home, an elaborate Victorian style house that has been refurbished. The original land office, where pioneers lined up to file their claims after the great land run of 1893, is on

The Midgley Museum Located at 1001 Sequoyah Drive, this museum displays an eclectic assortment of objects and artifacts collected over a lifetime by rock collectors, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Midgley. Veterans Museum The Enid Woodring Wall of Honor & Veterans Park was dedicated in the year 2000 and is located at the Enid Woodring Regional Airport. The Railroad Museum of Oklahoma If you find trains fascinating, you will enjoy this museum located at 702 N. Washington. Within the museum compound, there are eight cabooses from railroads that have served Enid, a baggage car, motor cars, a three-dome tank car, a 50-ton engine, a Champlin tank car, a Frisco 1915 Steam Engine and a Frisco boxcar and hopper car. New additions to the collection include an Amtrak lounge car, two flat cars and three other boxcars. The model railroad room includes HO-gauge, N-gauge and Lionel layouts. More than 900 pieces of railroad dining car china, plus an array of railroad memorabilia, is also on display.
