World Jamboree Connections
70th Anniversary of the 1951 World Jamboree (Part 2) By Neil W. Larsen ISCA #0086L
This article is Part 2 of the “70th Anniversary of the 1951 World Jamboree” article in the September issue of the ISCA Journal World Jamboree Connection segment. I hope this report sheds new light on the 1951 World Jamboree. I will try to cover items available at the Jamboree, visitor items and various nwlarsen@comcast.net souvenirs. I am using some of the information provided by Hanns Strouhal, one of the key archivists at the Pfadfindermuseum in Vienna, as well as other references. Once again, as I indicated in Part I, ALL items issued and sold were produced in Austria, this was a good thing because it helped the Austrian economy. Items at the Jamboree Camp books and Newspaper The Jamboree Diary (camp book) and newspaper “Die Maultrommel” (only three issues printed during the Jamboree) were available for all participants and visitors. The Jamboree books were printed in three languages, English, French and German by a publishing company in Linz, Upper Austria.
Bierzipf One item has always made me wonder about its purpose – whether or not it could have been a special award. It is a special pendant made of coloured ribbon with a metal triangle on each end and a metal logo in the center of the ribbon. On the upper metal triangle, there is a chain with a snap hook attached to the tip of the triangle. In the German speaking areas of Europe, it is called a Bierzipf (Zipf for short). The 1951 Bierzipf has a yellow/green ribbon with a World Jamboree metal logo in the center of the ribbon. It is a gift of friendship exchange between members of a special group, usually university students. It was attached to the scout uniforn pocket, see photo from 1951. Sub-camp items There were nine sub-camps in total, each named after the Austrian states. Seven sub-camps were for youth participants, one sub-camp was for scouters/scouts that were guests short or long term, and the last sub-camp was for adult delegates.

Three of the youth sub-camps had their own badge or item: In sub-camp 1 “Vienna” a printed triangular cloth badge with a bear and watermill (each edge length 67 mm) was created. In sub-camp 4 “Niederösterreich“ Lower Austria a wooden disc in various sizes (the wooden discs have various dimensions about 60x45 mm to 115 x 70mm) with a blue and yellow string. In sub-camp 6 “Steiermark” a small bell (size 40 x 47mm) hung on green-white ribbon (size 75 x 17mm) was distributed.
For the guest camp “Burgenland” a separate stamp (size of the stamp imprint 28 x 52 mm) was available. The sub-camp had a motto “old bones – young hearts” and it held about 700 during the Jamboree. The stamp logo was stamped on the back of the official leather badge to indicate they were a member the “Old Bones Camp”. Visitor items Visitor ID cards sold for 3 schilling per adult and 1 schilling per child. The adult ID’s were printed on different coloured cardboard with Jamboree logo on one side and advertising on the other side (size 50 x 50 mm) with green and white string. The child ID was a paper ribbon attached with safety pin (size 30 x 112 mm). The advertising on the adult visitor ID in German said, “Don’t forget to order the photo book at the Austrian Scout Shop in the Market Place.”
Souvenirs

ISCA JOURNAL - DECEMBER 2021
Souvenirs were available at the Marktplatz or market place (below). The Marktplatz was built in an Alpine style to harmonize with the terrain, with the market stalls made from clapboard and roofed (right). Various Austrian vendors had stalls along with the Austrian Scout shop. A large number of local vendors from Bad Ischl and vicinity had items from post cards and cloth neckties to stag horn woggles. Restaurants and food concessions were located just outside the Jamboree site near the visitor transportation areas. Many vendors and suppliers advertised in the camp book.
An example of a local Bad Ischl vendor selling various photos and post cards (right). The best photos were used in the photo book that could be ordered at the Austrian Scout Shop and sent after the Jamboree. A set of unique items that were available and advertised in the Jamboree camp book was hand carved stag horns (right). It was from a factory in Bad Ischl. Besides carving the Jamboree
logo, they carved edelweiss flower, Scout emblem and other designs. The woggle was the most numerous, but they also made broaches above center). A local company from Bad Ischl sold a very popular lithograph at the Marktplatz (right). In addition, there was a metal woggle with either the World Jamboree logo or the Austrian scout emblem attached of the front (left).

There was a pin and cane emblem. The pin was a shield with the Bad Ischl logo and Jamboree logo. It had a pin back and was stamped/painted. The cane emblem was round stamped aluminum with the Jamboree logo and flower design.
Two other items authorized were either a bronze or silver coin and a fob that I covered in the June 2010 issue of the ISCA Journal. The Austrian Scout Shop sold it at their Marktplatz stall.
A supplier advertised in the camp book, the Gärtner & Co Mittersill of Salzburg, Austria’s largest flag manufacturer, produced the pennant. Interestingly the pennant went through several designs with the colors and logo before settling on the green background with red and red/white edge. Several items of cloth were produced. One was a men’s tie in green cloth with either a printed or embroidered gold jamboree logo. A printed handkerchief on green cloth was available along with a multi-colored women’s scarf in either blue or red background color.
There were several Austrian companies with their own market place stalls. Manufacturers from Molln, Austria showcased and sold their Maultrommel (Jew’s harp) instruments. This allowed hands on with the experts showing how to play.. One other Austrian company that sold their product was PEZ candy. PEZ candy had a stall, but also women selling the unique candy from a tray. PEZ candy was started before WW II, but continued after the war and the candy dispensers of that time are highly collectable. Continued on Page 22
